“The Crown” could well bow out in style on home soil, with the final outing of the show leading the list of nominees for the 2024 BAFTA TV and TV Craft awards, announced Wednesday.
Netflix’s hit royal drama — which came to an end last year after six seasons — landed eight nominations in total, including for Dominic West, Elizabeth Debecki, Lesley Manville and Salim Daw in the performance categories. However, it missed out for drama series (an award it has been nominated for three times previously).
Just behind “The Crown” and also a Netflix production, the apocalyptic “Black Mirror” episode “Demon 79” earned seven nominations, including limited drama and leading actress for Anjana Vasan.
Further down in a tight group of frontrunners, BBC dramas “Happy Valley” and “The Sixth Commandment and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” each have six nominations. Sarah Lancashire’s leading actress nomination for “Happy Valley” could see...

Salim Daw and Lesley Manville are the other two nominated actors and actresses, while The Crown also received nominations in the likes of costume design, make up and sound.
Netflix achieved a record haul and was second only to the BBC with nominations, comfortably eclipsing stalwarts ITV and Channel 4 as Top Boy and Black Mirror were also rewarded.
Although not its most critically-rated season, Peter Morgan’s royal saga ended late last year with a bang and plenty controversy, and the noms come amid the ongoing Kate Middleton saga.

Exclusive: Pat Sharp, the British presenter known for his work on Top of the Pops and Fun House, has said he is “truly sorry” after making a lewd remark to a woman while hosting an events industry awards show.
The 61-year-old broadcaster, who shot to fame in the 1980s, was compèring the Conference News Agency Awards last Friday when he made a joke that shocked a room of around 400 people, according to several sources.
The incident has coincided with Greatest Hits Radio announcing today that Sharp is leaving the Bauer Media Group station to “explore other opportunities.” It is understood that Bauer made a decision some time ago not to renew Sharp’s contract, which expires at the end of March. However, having been made aware of the incident, Bauer said Sharp will “not return to the station with immediate effect.”

Holly Willoughby fell prey to an unexpected on-air prank by This Morning co-presenter Phillip Schofield.
Schofield’s stunt caused Willoughby to walk off set in humourous admonishment, while viewers claim to have heard the host use explicit language in her immediate reaction.
The incident took place during Thursday’s (26 January) episode of the popular ITV morning show, when the presenters discussed M Night Shyamalan’s new horror film, Knock at the Cabin.
Introducing the next segment, which featured interviews with castmembers Rupert Grint and Ben Aldridge, Schofield suddenly yelled out mid-sentence, causing Willoughby to react in shock.
While Willoughby cannot be heard clearly swearing, she makes a sound that closely resembles the start of an “F-bomb”, and then immediately covers her mouth with her hand.
“I haven’t done that for a while,” Schofield said, as his co-star looked around in shock. “It’s perfect.”

There’s something a bit magical about television on Christmas. Maybe it’s the cold weather driving everyone indoors. The gluttonous, slowly digesting roast dinners pinning everyone to the sofa. The intra-family arguments that need drowning out with noise. For whatever reason, Christmas always seems to be the time when most everyone agrees to convene around the TV screen and watch whatever’s on – an ingrained, sacred ritual somewhat befitting a religious holiday. I’m not sure Christmas TV has ever been less nourishing, however, than this year.
With a few notable exceptions, the UK’s 2022 Christmas TV line-up may have been the worst on record – it’s certainly the worst I can remember. There were a few highlights dotted around the festive period, of course, such as I Hate Suzie Too and a festive Motherland special. Children were well serviced with BBC One’s charming animation The Boy, the Mole,...

With a showing on multiple channels, King Charles III’s first Christmas speech, following the death of the Queen earlier this year, topped the list with 10.72m viewers.
Following behind was BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing, Michael McIntyre’s Christmas Wheel and Call the Midwife, with 5.44m, 4.81m and 4.49m viewers, respectively.
The BBC was also in the fifth olace with the premiere of Guy Ritchie’s live-action version of Aladdin, which was watched by 4.39m.
Elsewhere, Danny Dyer’s departure from EastEnders saw the BBC soap beat ITV1’s Coronation Street and Emmerdale in the ratings.
Other shows to feature in the top 15 included the final ever episode of Doc Martin and the BBC’s comedy shows Ghosts and Mrs Brown’s Boys, the latter of which The Independent called “worse than cranberry sauce” in a two-star review.

Hit U.K. game show The Wheel is rolling onto NBC for a star-filled two-week takeover! The energetic series premieres Monday, December 19 at 10/9c. Here’s how it works: With creator and host Michael McIntyre at the, er, wheel, the action unspools on a 42-foot-wide revolving platform. The contestant is seated in the center, surrounded by six celebrities, each an “expert” in a given category. Like a high-tech round of spin the bottle, the stage rotates to a randomly selected star, who advises the player on a trivia question worth 5K or more. The goal: Clear the Wheel with a correct answer in each category. And be glad there’s no motion sickness. “It’s very much ‘Whee! I’m having fun,’ rather than ‘Whoa, slow down!’” quips McIntyre. The series features suspenseful high-stakes trivia, laugh-out-loud moments, and more than 50 all-star guests seated on a spectacular 42-foot-wide spinning wheel. Among...

Strike: Troubled Blood really is an extraordinarily fine crime drama, where a range of exceptional talents come together to create something that is actually greater than the sum of its very formidable parts. That is something rare and to be cherished. And indeed watched, and I can unreservedly commend this four-parter as a highlight of your festive viewing. It starts brilliantly, but gets better, and there are some surprising and compelling star performances to come.
It’s the latest adaptation, by Tom Edge, of the Strike detective works of Jk Rowling, and probably the best. Tom Burke is once again in the title role of Cormoran Strike, the gruff but clever private investigator. Strike is an ex-soldier with a touch of Ptsd, a bit of a drink problem, and a troubled childhood. And his affection and respect for his resourceful business partner, Robin Ellacott (Holliday Grainger) always threatens, or promises,...

Mike Darnell spilled secrets from his decades-long journey through the world of unscripted TV – including his work on the “Friends” reunion special, “American Idol” and “Hell’s Kitchen – during a career retrospective in London, U.K. on Tuesday.
He revealed he had been trying to put together a “Friends” reunion since joining Warner Bros. Discovery back in 2013. “I’m a huge fan of that show, almost everybody is,” he said. “And I came to Warner Brothers, it was the twentieth anniversary of that show, and I was like, “We’ve got to get this done. Why aren’t we doing this?'”
But Darnell, who is now president of unscripted television at the company, said that with neither the cast nor the creators – Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane – interested, the project never got off the ground.

Returning showrunner Russell T Davies has spoken in the past about how the previous Doctor Who spin-offs came too soon. Given the current expanded universe boom across various franchises led by Marvel’s dominance of cinema and subsequent ventures into TV, the launch of The Sarah-Jane Adventures, Torchwood, etc…. was ahead of its time.
Now, Davies argues, is the moment for Doctor Who‘s version of the MCU. And according to a recent article on mirror.co.uk, that’s exactly what’s about to happen. Rumour has it that fans can expect spin-off series featuring some of the Doctor’s most famous enemies.
The Mirror’s anonymous source suggested: “Fans can expect to see Sontarans, Weeping Angels and Sea Devils in separate series showing what they get up to when the Doctor isn’t there to stop them, along with Daleks and Cybermen.”

Contenders ready!
Gladiators, the U.K version of American Gladiators and a show that became a staple of British Saturday night TV in the 1990s, is getting a reboot.
Confirming rumors that emerged last month, the BBC has revealed it is the new home for the spandex-friendly, muscle-flexing entertainment show, which originally ran on ITV from October 1992 to January 2000 (Sky had a short-lived revival that lasted just a year between 2008 and 2009).
The eleven-episode series — made by Hungry Bear Media (behind BBC game show Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel) and MGM Television U.K. (part of the Amazon-owned MGM, which owns American Gladiators) — is set to land on screens in 2023 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with brand new games alongside some of the original classic challenges, culminating in the classic head-to-head race, The Eliminator.
