The new hit take on the beloved Tina Fey high school comedy shows a lasting appeal, but can the original ever be topped?
Because time is a construct, it’s the year 2024, and the biggest film at the box office is … Mean Girls. That would be the new movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical based on the beloved 2004 film, which feels like a distinctly modern case of IP ouroboros. Despite harsh-to-middling reviews and several trailers noticeably avoiding any of the film’s musical numbers, the new Mean Girls topped the MLK holiday weekend box office with $33m, out-earning the original in absolute terms. And, true to the spirit of the original, the Mean Girls musical movie has generated its own stream of memes – for not knowing it was a musical, for example, or for star Reneé Rapp Regina George-ing a tour bus company owner during a press junket.

The Costume Designers Guild has announced nominations for the 26th Costume Designers Guild Awards, with “Maestro,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things” and “Oppenheimer” among those landing nominations.
The costume designers behind “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon” will vie for the top prize in excellence in period film, while the artisans behind “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield” and “Saltburn” will compete for excellence in contemporary costume.
Notably missing from the lineup were the costume designers behind “The Color Purple,” “Wonka” and “Ferrari.”
Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has been an Oscars frontrunner for costume with Jacqueline Durran’s designs translating from the big screen into mainstream when the film became a cultural phenomenon last summer. Thousands emulated Beach Barbie and Ken looks as they showed up at movie theaters in various shades of pink. For the film, Durran created hundreds of looks for the various Barbies and Kens.

The Oscar chances for Best Costume Design frontrunners “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer” were bolstered by their nominations for the 26th Costume Designer Guild Awards on January 4. The Cdga will be held February 21, 2024, at Neuehouse Hollywood.
While “Barbie” was nominated in the sci-fi/fantasy category — and should prevail over “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” — the other four compete in the period category against “Napoleon,” with “Poor Things” as the clear favorite here.
Meanwhile, the contemporary contenders include “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield,” and “Saltburn.” None is expected to make the final Oscar cut, but “Saltburn” is the flashy favorite here.
In terms of the Oscar race, it looks like a feminist battle between Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Barbie” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.

“Dune”, “Coming 2 America” and “Cruella” were the film winners at the 2022 Costume Designers Guild Awards on Wednesday night.
Back in person after the pandemic, the awards recognized excellence in film, TV and short-form costume design and were hosted by Andrew Rannells and Casey Wilson.
Costume Designers Guild president Salvador Perez discussed the role the awards and the guild played in the pandemic, saying, “As a community, we have survived a life-changing pandemic industry and been on the brink of work stoppage.”
Perez also called for “pay equity now.” This has been an ongoing plea from Perez and the costume designers who fight for pay equity. He said, costume designers, are “historically underpaid for too long. The white pantsuit Maya Rudolph wore as Kamala Harris on this week’s episode of “Saturday Night Live” was originally bought last year to be worn by Cecily Strong in a Melania Trump sketch.
Though that particular Melania impression never came to fruition, the ironic detail was revealed in a recent Popsugar interview with “SNL” costume designer Tom Broecker and wardrobe supervisor Dale Richards. According to the outlet, the costume department was able to repurpose the unused pantsuit to recreate the ensemble that Harris wore during her and Joe Biden’s first speech after they were projected as the winners of the 2020 Presidential Election on Saturday.
Broecker and Richards only had 85 minutes to re-create Harris’ beautiful cream-white pantsuit, which she wore on stage in Wilmington, Delaware to address the nation alongside Biden at about 8:30 p.m. Et on Saturday. Since “SNL” goes live at 11:30 p.m. Et, they...

But even with their massive collection, the show's wardrobe team still scrambled to recreate Vice President Elect Kamala Harris' ensemble from her Saturday night acceptance speech in Delaware. As SNL producer and costume designer Tom Broecker and wardrobe supervisor Dale Richards told PopSugar, their work began around 8:30 p.m., when Kamala took the stage ahead of President Elect Joe Biden in her cream-colored suit by Carolina Herrera. Tom recalled, "My assistant started capturing screen grabs of everything...

Nominees for the 22nd annual Costume Designer Guild Awards included frontrunning period pieces “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “Rocketman.” They were joined by “Downton Abbey” and “Jojo Rabbit.” This definitely bodes well for Ruth Carter (“Dolemite”) in her bid for a second consecutive Oscar following “Black Panther.”
However, surprise no shows were “Joker,” “The Irishman,” “Little Women,” and “Judy.” And, Deborah Cook, who became the first costume designer from animation to get nominated by the Cdga for her breakthrough work on “Kubo and the Two Strings,” was denied this time around for her great Victorian-era work on Laika’s stop-motion Oscar contender, “Missing Link.”
Contemporary nominees, meanwhile, included “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” “Hustlers,” “Knives Out,” “The Laundromat,” and “Queen & Slim.” But “Bombshell” didn’t make the cut.

The death of fashion and costume designer Karl Lagerfeld cast somewhat of a shadow over the usually jubilant Costume Designers Guild Awards — the only award show where clothes literally steal the spotlight away from actors — which was held at the Beverly Hilton on Tuesday night. Here it was obvious that Lagerfeld’s impact on Hollywood went far beyond an uncredited cameo in “Zoolander.”
Glenn Close, who was being honored with the spotlight award, recalled her one and only encounter with Lagerfeld. “I’m not deep into the world of fashion, but I did meet him personally on the set of ‘101 Dalmatians’ and we had this incredible photo shoot,” Close said. “He was wonderful — I got along really well with him. The Cga has announced its 2019 nominees in three film categories, seven television categories, and one short form design category, and the group brings expected Oscar contenders up against some fun, lighter fare like “Mamma Mia!” and “A Wrinkle in Time.”
A majority of IndieWire awards editor Anne Thompson’s current predictions to land Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design are represented by the Cdga. Erin Benach (“A Star Is Born”) and Ruth Carter (“Black Panther”) are competing in the Excellence in Contemporary Film and Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film categories, respectively, while Julian Day (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and Sandy Powell (“The Favourite”) are nominated in the Excellence in Period Film. Powell is a double nominee, with her work on “Mary Poppins Returns” also nominated for Excellence in Period Film.

“Saturday Night Live” won Best Variety Sketch Series at Monday’s Primetime Emmy Awards, marking the first time the long-running show has defended a series award and extending its record haul to 72, the most of any program.
Though “SNL” has been on the air for 43 years, it has only won three series awards. It took home Best Variety Series in 1976 for its first season and again in 1993 for its 18th season. After the category was split into Best Variety Sketch Series and Best Variety Talk Series in 2015, “SNL” won the former last year for its buzzy, politically charged 42nd installment. It had leading 2/13 odds to repeat this year.

“SNL”‘s 43rd season earned 21 nominations this year, including nine acting bids. It received seven statuettes at last weekend’s Creative Arts Awards, including Best Comedy Guest Actress for Tiffany Haddish.
“Portlandia” was in second with 16/1 odds.

Over the weekend, NBC’s legendary variety program “Saturday Night Live” won seven more trophies at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday night. It prevailed for comedy guest actress (Tiffany Haddish), variety directing (Don Roy King), music and lyrics, production design, lighting design, make-up and technical direction.
The show now has a mind-blowing 71 Emmy wins in its 43-year run, way ahead in the all-time record books for any series. The next closest series for the all-time marks held by “Game of Thrones” with 45 and “Frasier” with 37. “SNL” has got three more shots at the primetime ceremony on Monday, September 17, so how many more victories will it achieve to bump up its total haul even more? Those categories are Variety Sketch Series (where it is a virtual lock to win), Comedy Supporting Actress and Comedy Supporting Actor (with Alec Baldwin and Kenan Thompson).

In TV’s new world of HD cameras, tighter-than-tight deadlines and all-angles shooting, costume designers must strive to withstand the kinds of physical and technological strains that could pull their creations apart.
Whether making a wardrobe for performance shows including ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” NBC’s “The Voice” or VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race”; for sketch comedies such as NBC’s “Saturday Night Live”; or scripted dramas like Netflix’s “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” costume designers must contend with HD and what it means for their color and fabric choices.
“Purple is a perfect example of how HD can affect what you’re doing because it’s a mixture of red and blue so you don’t really know how it’s going to look on camera, and we don’t do camera tests because there’s no time, and sometimes we get a request for...

Comedian James Adomian accuses “Saturday Night Live” of being homophobic to gay men and stealing jokes in a new interview with The Daily Beast. Adomian, an out gay comedian best known for his celebrity impressions and for appearances on “Comedy Bang! Bang!” and “Chicago Trap House,” auditioned for the NBC sketch comedy series 13 years ago and did not get cast. According to The Daily Beast, the show has only had one openly gay male cast member, Terry Sweeney, who was on the series during the 1985-1986 season.
“It would be nice if they put a gay man on camera on that show,” Adomian said, “I’ve been out of the closet the whole time since I auditioned 13 years ago. You would think that they would have tried to put someone else on that was a gay man. It’s about time.”

“I just couldn’t wait to get my hands all over it,” says costume designer Tom Broecker during our recent webcam chat (watch the exclusive video above) about working on Amazon’s “Z: The Beginning of Everything.” “I’ve got to do this, there’s just no question, I’ve just got to do this project,” the designer recalls, noting that “the […]...

While the costumes in Amazon original series Z: The Beginning of Everything may seem simple on the surface, if you look inside their elaborate internal components, clearly they are far from it. This was one of the major surprises for Emmy-winning costume designer Tom Broecker in designing pieces for the series. His job was depicting a period a few years before the Roaring Twenties Flapper fashion that fills history books and the collective imagination, the time when Zelda…...
