HBO is planning a TV show based on one of the year’s most critically-acclaimed web series. Brown Girls, directed by Sam Bailey and written by Fatimah Asghar, is coming to premium cable thanks to a deal with HBO and producers 3Arts and Mxn Entertainment.
The Brown Girls web series stars Nabila Hossain and Sonia Denis as two friends who must grapple with themes like race, gender, love, and sexuality in modern-day Chicago. The series, which was elegantly shot and carefully crafted, earned plenty of praise upon its February 2017 arrival (including some from us), and the HBO deal will allow it to reach a larger audience.
Though Brown Girls is stepping up to a longer format, its creators plan for it to continue to address the same topics it touched upon during its initial run. Asghar explained her goals for the HBO show in an interview with Elle:

Boot Camp lasted five weeks - yes, that's right, five weeks - but tonight, we finally have some progression, and the final 24 are off to Judges' Houses to be whittled down to the final 12. Cheryl takes the Groups to Rome, Simon takes the Overs to the South of France, Rita takes the Girls to La... and Nick takes the Boys to the Cotswolds. Awkward.
Join us from 8pm and we'll bring you all the action live as it happens. We can't wait to comment on all of the judges' interior design prowess (and also, we suppose, whether the acts are any good). In the meantime, here's 8 of the past best ever Judges' Houses moments - we wonder what kind of tears, celebrity cameos and pool-jumping antics we've got in store this evening?

Yet again, here comes another web series, but instead of the usual “hip-millennials–trying-to-get-through-life” types of series, the upcoming "You’re So Talented" got my attention, because it’s trying to do something different. Different, in that, it’s clearly trying to capture some of that Issa Rae “Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl” vibe, centering on 25 year old Bea, played by Sam Bailey, who’s an unemployed actress and artist, and definitely not the hippest, or the slickest, or the coolest person around. The Chicago-made series was directed by Chris Tabor, and written by Bailey, who is a Chicago stage actress, and member of Chicago’s legendary comedy...

Keith Lemon is a very busy man at the moment - but somehow he still managed to find the time to write not one, but two books! To celebrate, we caught up with Keith ("I look worse than Kelly Brook in the morning," he complained) to chat about his books (and how Hugh Jackman inspired them), his new sketch show, why he regrets choosing a beaver for his book, Celebrity Juice and much, much, much more...

We're just going to say it: this year's X Factor wasn't a golden year. By that, we mean there was no Leona, no Olly, no Alexandra, Little Mix or even a Wagner or Jedward. With the exception of Tamera Foster - who has all the components of a brilliant popstar but hasn't quite worked out how they fit together yet - there wasn't a whole lot to get excited about with this year's lineup.
But it would be cruel to label the winner Sam Bailey as the best of a bad bunch. She does, without question, have a fantastic voice that was able to cope with the tired and limiting themes it was hit with each week; including disco, songs from films and, worst of all, 'Best of X Factor'. ''He never seemed to like me and whenever I gave a good performance he would pick up on the smallest things in the world. ''I was disappointed with Louis saying,...

Speaking to the Leicester Mercury newspaper, he joked: ''We always share the chores but I have been doing the lot while she was away winning the X Factor. ''I have...

Sam Bailey says pub singers could ''p**s over half'' of the 'X Factor' contestants. The hopeful - who will compete with Nicholas McDonald in the live final tonight (15.12.13) - has lashed out against her rivals and the show as a whole after she was snubbed at her first audition six years ago. She told the Sunday People newspaper: ''I didn't have a lot of belief in the show then because the people I thought were relatively good never made it. ''I know so many people singing in pubs and clubs that will literally p**s over half the people who have been in...

Gary Barlow and Dermot O'Leary have expressed concern about X Factor favourite Sam Bailey's chances of success in this weekend's final, as well as in the music industry.
Speaking to Digital Spy and others, the pair speculated that viewer complacency could result in Bailey finishing behind apparent outsiders Nicholas McDonald and Luke Friend.
"The worst thing for Sam is people think she's already won, so they won't pick up the phone for her," O'Leary said. "That could easily happen... I think you'll see a couple of shocks this weekend."
On whether the 36-year-old will be able to sell records, Barlow continued: "The next stage for Sam is critical. She's got to make the right record now.
"If they settle for second best and do a covers album, I think it could be the worst thing for her."
"They need to get a young team of songwriters in and... come...

Sam Bailey is to perform a raunchy routine on this week's 'X Factor'. The former prison officer will reportedly slide down a pole into a set made to look like a jail cell while singing Lady Gaga's 'Edge of Glory' in a bid to sex up the performances in Saturday night's final (14.12.13) after critics predicted it would be boring. A source told the Sun newspaper: ''Sam's routine for 'Edge of glory' is her raunchiest yet. There will be a pole on stage and it's a prison set. Producers are aware of the criticism of this year's finalists and want to make...

Louis Walsh doesn't think 'The X Factor' has found an ''international star'' this year. The 61-year-old judge has two acts in this year's final, Luke Friend and Nicholas McDonald, but doesn't think they or third finalist Sam Bailey are capable of matching the success of some previous acts. He said: ''I don't think there's any international star there. There's no One Direction, no Olly Murs, there's no Leona Lewis. ''There are people who are going to be very good winners and who are going to sell records, but who is going to be around in a couple of years' time? Probably Luke, probably...

Sam Bailey has been getting advice from Ozzy Osbourne. The 'X Factor' favourite says the most surreal moment of the ITV competition has been chatting to her mentor Sharon Osbourne's rocker husband in a three-way phone conversation, in which he told her the Osbourne family are her biggest fans. Sharon Osbourne is fuming over Simon Cowell's failure to support her 'X Factor' contestant Sam Bailey. The 61-year-old judge is reportedly angry that the show's boss doesn't seem to want her protege to win, instead preferring Tamera Foster. Speaking to the Sunday People newspaper, a source said: ''She's so frustrated and cross with Simon. ''She knows he doesn't want Sam to win. Sharon reckons he thinks she's to old to be marketable. It's so annoying for Sharon.'' The 54-year-old media mogul apparently doesn't see a lucrative future for the 36-year-old prison officer and he is said to be set on offering Tamera a record...

Over on BBC One on Saturday night, the broadcaster was marking the 50th anniversary of a much-loved show. A cameo from Tom Baker, great actors, a glimpse into the future, plenty of touching nods to the past; It was a wonderful celebration of a fantastic British institution.
On ITV, Chico was jumping all over Caroline Flack in a warehouse.
Yes, this was the 10th Anniversary X Factor special. A randomly picked date, which happened to coincide with the events happening on BBC One. ITV did their best to trump the Doctor Who party and when it came to frightening performances that had you jumping behind the sofa in horror, X Factor was without question the clear victor.
Who needs Zygons and Daleks when you've got Louis Walsh?

This week, we've decided against our usual tradition of a Spotify playlist of the original versions of the songs to be performed on this Saturday's Live Show.
Why? Well, four of the "X Factor artist" songs chosen for this 10th anniversary Live Show are themselves covers of older songs - Louis Walsh's rulebook is presumably covered in Tipp-Ex.
So we've instead decided to give you a video playlist of what we believe to be the definitive X Factor renditions of each of the tracks that Hannah Barrett, Luke Friend, Nicholas McDonald, Rough Copy, Sam Bailey and Tamera Foster will sing tomorrow.
Alexandra Burke: 'Hallelujah' - 2008 final performance (originally by Leonard Cohen)
One Direction: 'What Makes You Beautiful' - 2011 final with Jls
Joe McElderry: 'The Climb' - 2009 winner's performance (originally by Miley Cyrus)

Sam Bailey: A+
Despite being tagged as this year's "Tesco Mary", given the tag "ScrewBo" by Louis Walsh and an alarming amount of interest from Michael Bolton, Sam has managed to overcome these hurdles and genuinely be considered a contender for the title. No easy feat for an act in the dreaded Overs category.
Sam's managed to not only hit all the big notes, she's also managed to make herself look like an artist who could sell a few records. The judges can't find a flaw, her blubbing husband gets us all emotional every time and she's proving to be consistently popular in the Digital Spy polls. We'd probably hate her if she wasn't so darn nice.
Rough Copy: A
