When the 77th Tony Awards nominations are announced this morning, those honored with recognition will have been selected by a small group of theatre professionals who commit to seeing each and every eligible production that opened during the 2023-2024 season. They are thus able to make informed decisions on what shows, performers and creatives should earn the spotlight of New York theatre’s top honor.
This past season, 60 theatre professionals saw all 36 eligible musicals, play, and revivals and will select the nominees in 26 competitive categories.
Below, see a complete list of the 2023-2024 Tony Awards nominating committee members, including their professions plus past Tony nominations and wins. Some of these nominators may have to recuse themselves prior to voting if they have a conflict, such as if a production that they worked is eligible for a nomination this year.

The Tony Awards has added new members to its nominating committee, including Ain’t No Mo star and playwright Jordan E. Cooper and Kpop composer Helen Park, who have both been outspoken about the need for change within the industry.
Other new members joining for the 2023-2024 Broadway season include The Greatest Showman and Dear Evan Hansen songwriter Benj Pasek, actor Bob Balaban, actor and playwright Adam Chanler-Berat, interdisciplinary artist Ty Defoe and director Miranda Haymon.
The Tony Awards nominating committee is typically younger and more diverse than the larger Tony Awards voting body. However, the addition of Cooper and Park is particularly notable, as both had shows this past season that posted early closing notices and have spoken out about the need for Broadway to improve how it markets to and welcomes diverse audiences (Kpop is about competing Korean pop bands, while Ain’t No Mo’ follows a series...

Did you know that Oprah Winfrey won so many Emmy Awards in the 1990s that she eventually withdrew herself from consideration so other people could prevail? It’s true. If you’re someone who’s been waiting to see the TV queen accept another award, you might be interested to know that she’s a producer on the new Hulu docu-series “The 1619 Project” and thus could be adding another Primetime Emmy to her mantel.
All told, Winfrey took home nine Daytime Emmys in Best Talk Show and seven in Best Talk Show Host for “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” plus two more for the children’s special “ABC Afterschool Specials” and the special class series “Super Soul Sunday.” In addition, she is a Primetime Emmy champion for the TV movie “Tuesdays with Morrie” and has been honored throughout her career with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, the Daytime Lifetime Achievement Award,...

In her scorching book of essays “The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story,” Nikole Hannah-Jones wrote that “White Americans desire to be free of a past they do not want to remember, while Black Americans remain bound to a past they can never forget.”
That’s the underlying thesis of Hannah-Jones’ essay collection, of the companion New York Times podcast, and of the six-part docuseries now airing on Hulu (all named after the year that the first enslaved Africans were brought to American soil). The show chronicles the impact of slavery on modern America right up to the present day, in tandem with Black Americans’ incontrovertible stamp on arts and culture. And though it feels like a historical documentary, make no mistake: This is true crime, and it should galvanize viewers as strongly. It is a miscarriage of justice starting centuries ago, at the top, and can’t be rectified without mass movement.

“Beth is okay,” Susan Kelechi Watson assures us of her character, Beth Pearson, following the Season 5 finale of “This is Us.” Fans were rattled to see Beth’s sister-in-law Kate (Chrissy Metz) marrying her boss Phillip (Chris Geere) in the season’s last episode. “We are five years ahead, which is fun to play because we age up and things have changed.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“This is Us” will be ending its successful run on NBC with Season 6. “There is something to knowing when you’ve told the story,” Watson says. “That has always been Dan [Fogelman]’s main goal. We’ve spanned generations and the goal of the show was to tell this family’s story authentically. To see where they came from and to find out where they’re going. The story started with Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and it ends with Rebecca.

It’s no secret that television and film production faced wildly unprecedented challenges over the past year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with shows and movies delayed or halted in the middle of shooting, some never to resume again. But what is interesting to see when the creative teams behind these projects get together is how this communal, challenging experience was tackled by them in very different ways — and yet they all can empathize with each other’s plights.
“We were kind of fractured in the way of shooting it out of order like that, and then further fractured by the fact that the pandemic happened and then all of a sudden, everyone had like months away from the project where they weren’t kind of engaged in it,” HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” director Craig Zobel said during TheWrap’s Emmy Contenders Showcase panel with directors of fellow HBO and HBO Max titles.

MGM has signed a two-year second-look film production deal with Plan B Entertainment. As part of the new pact, Plan B’s Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner have set several projects with the studio, including an original sweeping love story from writer and director Lee Isaac Chung and Cory Finley’s film adaptation of National Book Award winner M.T. Anderson’s novel Landscape With Invisible Hand. Finley will write and direct the latter adaptation and Annapurna Pictures will produce with Plan B.
Both films will be released theatrically in the U.S. via MGM’s distribution and marketing joint venture United Artists Releasing.

Thanksgiving is certainly a time for giving thanks and reflection — especially during this time. HBO’s special event Between the World and Me from Ta-Nehisi Coates as it tells an urgent story of hope and resilience. It initially debuted on November 21 but starting on November 25 and through November 30, Between the World and Me will be available for free on HBOMax.com, HBO.com, On Demand and will re-air on good ol’ fashioned linear television via HBO’s Thanksgiving free preview weekend.
The special event is an adaptation of Coates’ best-selling book and Apollo stage performance of the same name. The book is recognized as a classic of the Black Lives Matter era and during a global pandemic against the backdrop of the killing of Breonna Taylor and global protests for Black lives. Between The World And Me is an urgent story of hope and resilience, exploring Coates’ vision of a race built beneath white supremacy,...

When Between the World and Me landed on bookshelves five summers ago, it had just one blurb, from Toni Morrison. The late standard-bearer called Ta-Nehisi Coates’ breakout second book, the follow-up to his 2008 memoir The Beautiful Struggle, “required reading.”
For people all around the world, that’s what it became. Between the World and Me topped the New York Times bestseller list, won a National Book Award, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. This seminal work about racism in America, framed as a letter to Coates’ son, then...

Prince Carmen Jones Jr., an African American man who was racially profiled and killed by police officer in Virginia in 2000, features heavily in Ta-Nehisi Coates’ 2015 book “Between the World and Me,” about being Black in America. The two were friends in college, and Jones’ story is one on which the media doesn’t often focus: an affluent Black man succumbing to tragedy at the hands of systemic racism.
When “Between the World and Me” was being adapted, first as a series of monologues for the stage in 2018 and then again for an HBO special event film in 2020, Jones’ story was still a predominant element of the narrative. But, in the two decades since his death, his name was joined by countless others on an ever-expanding list of victims of such tragedies. In order to speak to the “now” of the moment for the HBO project, director Kamilah Forbes expanded beyond...

After adapting Ta-Nehisi Coates's 2015 bestseller Between the World and Me for the Apollo, Kamilah Forbes is making her television directorial debut by turning the play into a special for HBO Max, set to air on Nov. 21. Between the World and Me is written as a letter from Coates to his 15-year-old son, in which he details his experiences growing up in Baltimore and his growing fear of daily violence against the Black community. By combining powerful performances, elements of the Apollo's production, documentary footage from the star-studded cast's home lives, archival footage, and animation, the book was reimagined during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic - and against the backdrop of the killings of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other Black Americans across the nation.

By the time Ta-Nehisi Coates speaks in HBO’s adaptation of “Between the World and Me,” his words have already been voiced by a starry cadre of Black talent. Coates’ recollections, heartbreaks and historical conclusions become monologues performed to the camera by actors like Angela Bassett, Mahershala Ali and Oprah Winfrey herself taking on his prose like a solemn mantle. Directed by Kamilah Forbes of New York City’s Apollo Theater, with archival montages and gorgeous cinematography by Bradford Young, this visual version of “Between the World and Me” is as dense and vast as the book that inspired it.
When Coates first decided to write “Between the World and Me” as a letter to his 15 year-old son, the news was reporting yet another endless cycle of all too familiar stories. “This was the year you saw Eric Garner choked to death,” he writes in the opening pages. “You have...

“Between the World and Me,” Ta-Nehisi Coates’ 2015 New York Times bestselling book — and the 2018 Apollo stage performance of the same name — has been reimagined for the small screen. Directed by award-winning Apollo Theater Executive Producer Kamilah Forbes, this story of aspiration and durability combines elements of the original stage production, including readings from Coates’ book by a bevy of celebrities, and takes on a new urgency against the backdrop of a global pandemic that’s disproportionately affecting Black people, as well as the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and the global protests that followed.
It’s a dynamic visual ode to Coates’ poetic letter to his 15-year-old son, Samori Coates, on coming of age as a Black boy in America; for a Black son who does not yet realize that he will very likely have to walk the same long, hard road in a country that doesn’t love him back,...
