“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” could be in for a marvelous last season at this year’s Emmys. That is a tired pun by now, admittedly. However this Amazon Prime Video series has so superbly executed its five seasons that, over the course of its run, it has remained as fresh and funny as ever. This consistency means that the series could end up bookending its entire run with Emmy wins for Best Comedy Series.
The show followed Rachel Brosnahan as the titular Miriam “Midge” Maisel — a Jewish-American housewife who, in the 1950s, embarks on a career in stand-up comedy after her husband (Michael Zegen) leaves her. The five seasons then chart Midge’s ups and downs as she meets various characters who help or hinder her, including Alex Borstein‘s Susie Myerson, who acts as Midge’s manager.

The fifth and final season of Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel” is upon us. The hit comedy series follows Rachel Brosnahan as Miriam “Midge” Maisel in 1950s/60s New York who, after her husband leaves her, embarks on a career in stand-up comedy. Along the way, she meets an array of supporting players including Alex Borstein‘s Susie Myerson, who runs The Gaslight Café, where Midge first starts her stand-up career. She also contends with her ex-husband (Michael Zegen), who has dreams of his own, and her parents, played by Marin Hinkle and Tony Shalhoub.
Brosnahan has earned rave reviews for her bravura performance in the final episodes of the series. Such critical acclaim, combined with affection for the show, could boost her chances with the TV academy. Among those critics singing her praises:
Peter Travers (“Good Morning America”): “In the closing episode, entitled ‘Four Minutes’ in reference to the brief,...

“The Marvelous Mrs Maisel” is, sadly, coming to an end. The fifth and final season of the Amazon Prime Video show is now available to air on the streaming service and fans and critics alike will soon mourn the end of one of TV’s most charming shows. The hour-long comedy series chronicles the life of the newly single Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) who pursues a career in stand-up comedy. She meets a cast of colorful characters along the way including Alex Borstein‘s Susie Mayerson, who runs The Gaslight Café where Midge begins her career in stand-up.
The final episode of “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel” merit a jaw-dropping score 0f 97% at Rotten Tomatoes and an equally impressive Metacritic grade of 80. Below, just a sampling of the rave reviews:
Chris Barsanti of Slant Magazine observed that “the show’s mixture of comedy and fantastical nostalgia is as intoxicating as ever.

Best Director at the Oscars was almost entirely male for most of its history, with only five women even being nominated in the Academy Awards’ first 90 years. But the 2020s have quickly improved that record, and Sarah Polley could continue it by becoming the third woman in a row not only to be nominated, but to win. She directed “Women Talking,” about a Mennonite community where the women have been systematically preyed upon by the men.

“The Fabelmans” was the first Steven Spielberg film ever to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the gambit seems to have paid off in terms of the film’s Oscar hopes. The 2022 Emmy race for Best Drama Series isn’t over just yet. While a majority of our Experts predict HBO’s “Succession” will win, the other two choose Netflix’s “Squid Game.” Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are journalists from major media outlets who cover television and/or the awards season. See their individual predictions right here.
“Succession” is up for its third season after winning Best Drama Series the last time it was eligible, for its second season in 2020. Also that year it took home trophies for lead actor (Jeremy Strong), guest actress (Cherry Jones), directing (Andrij Parekh), writing (Jesse Armstrong), casting and picture editing. For it debut season in 2019, the HBO family drama only won two Emmys: writing (Armstrong) and main title theme music (Nicholas Britell).

While last year’s Emmy race for Best Comedy Series was an easy get for “Ted Lasso,” this year is looking to be much more competitive. In fact, our 17 Experts are split four ways, with Apple TV Plus’ “Ted Lasso,” HBO Max’s “Hacks,” HBO’s “Barry” and FX’s “Atlanta” all being predicted by one or more of them. Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are journalists from major media outlets who cover television and/or the awards season. See their individual predictions right here.
Far out front is “Ted Lasso,” with these 11 Experts predicting it will win for the second year in a row: Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Eric Deggans (NPR), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine), Peter Travers (ABC), Susan King (Gold Derby), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV). Much of the conversation surrounding this year’s Best Limited Series Emmy race is focused on Netflix, partly because it produced the most recent winner in the category (“The Queen’s Gambit”), but also thanks to its robust slate of one-off shows that aired during the 2021-2022 season. Among these is “Anatomy of a Scandal,” a legal thriller centered on an effort to hold a British politician accountable for his abhorrent actions. Showrunner/executive producer/writer Melissa James Gibson and cast members Michelle Dockery, Rupert Friend, Sienna Miller, Naomi Scott and Josette Simon recently sat down with Edith Bowman for a 2022 Emmys FYC panel during which they expounded on the importance of the show. Watch the video Q&a above.

For this year’s Best Comedy Series battle, Gold Derby predicts reigning champ “Ted Lasso” will win again after walking away with last year’s statue. But the current Emmy race between “Ted Lasso” and “Hacks,” our predicted runner-up, is closer than you think. For starters, only eight comedies in Emmy history claimed the top prize for Season 1 and Season 2 (with the last being “Modern Family” 11 years ago), so history suggests we might see another show step up to the podium at the 2022 Emmys. Might an upset be in store?
At last year’s kudos, the Apple TV Plus feel-good sports laffer won seven total Emmys for series, actor (Jason Sudeikis), supporting actress (Hannah Waddingham), supporting actor (Brett Goldstein), casting, picture editing and sound mixing. Not to be outdone, the HBO Max show about a legendary stand-up comedian claimed three Emmys for actress (Jean Smart), directing (Lucia Aniello) and writing.

The Seattle International Film Festival closed its 48th edition on Sunday by announcing its top honors, presenting awards at a ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Seattle.
“Klondike,” a film following a family that lives on the tumultuous border of Russia and Ukraine in 2014, was awarded the grand jury prize within the festival’s official competition.
“For a work both tragically prophetic and universal in its impact, a ferocious and formalist vision of war that fuses humanism, black comedy and horror into a searing and original vision, we award the Grand Jury Prize to Maryna Er Gorbach’s ‘Klondike,'” said the jury, composed of Angel An, senior director of acquisitions at Roadside Attraction; David Ansen, lead programmer at the Palm Spring International Film Festival; and Matthew Campbell, artistic director of the Denver Film Society and the Denver Film Festival.
