Charlie Benante is one of metal’s finest drummers, as he’s proven during his long run in his primary band Anthrax and his current stint in Pantera. But could he handle a dance track like the Barbie soundtrack cut “Choose Your Fighter”? That’s what Drumeo set to find out in the latest edition of its “For the First Time” series.
As we’ve seen in past editions of this series featuring Chad Smith (Thirty Seconds to Mars’ “The Kill”), Nandi Bushell (Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It”), and others, drummers are challenged to come up with their own drum parts as they hear a song for the first time. The drum tracks have been taken out of the originals, allowing the drummers to use their skills and imagination to play along to the songs.

John Wick has infiltrated the world of video games and television, and now it’s time to conquer the pinball world. Lionsgate has teamed with Stern Pinball (the same folks behind the Jaws pinball machine) to release a new series of pinball machines inspired by the series of films.
Available now at retailers in Pro, Premium, and Limited Edition models, players will step into the role of the world’s greatest assassin as he fights to escape his past. As the titular character, players can engage in high-speed car chases and fast-action drifting across the playfield, which incorporates models and artwork inspired by iconic locations from the franchise, including the New York Continental Hotel and the Red Circle Club.
Players can also open John Wick’s weapons crate to reveal a hidden shot target path to retrieve an array of weapons. You must use the sculpted Blood Oath Marker carefully – or risk the consequences.

The one-off supergroup Gbi — Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Anthrax members Charlie Benante and Scott Ian — have unveiled their cover of the Bad Brains song “The Regulator.”
The trio had previously announced the single as a Record Store Day (April 20th) vinyl release, and on Sunday (April 21st), they unleashed a music video for the track (watch below).
Upon the initial announcement of the single, Scott Ian revealed the story behind the collaboration: “Anthrax were recording our new album at [Grohl’s] 606 [studio] and the Foo’s were there rehearsing at the same time. Dave had popped into the studio to hang and listen to what we were doing and we’d gone over to hear the Foo’s rehearse. I texted Dave the next morning and said: ‘Hey! Good to see ya the other day. Are you rehearsing today? I’ll be there doing guitars. Wanna record a Minor Threat song?...

Drummer Charlie Benante breaks down the Pantera classic “Walk” in a new video for Drumeo (watch below).
Benante, the longtime and still current drummer for Anthrax, joined Pantera in 2022 as part of the legendary metal act’s revamped reunion lineup. He’s had the difficult task of filling the shoes of the band’s late drummer, Vinnie Paul.

The veteran metal drummer begins his analysis of Vinnie Paul’s drum parts in “Walk” with the intro fill, which comes in after the first rounds of guitar riffs. The subtle complexities of the rhythm section become immediately apparent when Benante plays — for example — the opening fill slightly fast, showing that it doesn’t work.
“It sets up the groove a lot better, for me, if I don’t rush into it,” he said before playing it at the correct speed.

Dave Grohl paid tribute to his one-time Nirvana bandmate Paul McCartney (technically, it’s true!) with a rendition of “Live and Let Die” at the Love Rocks NYC benefit concert Thursday night, March 7.
The Foo Fighters frontman gave a characteristically full-throated performance of McCartney’s hit 1973 James Bond theme song. Though he strained a bit to hit some of the high notes during the ballad-y sections and left the “You know you did” refrain to the backing vocalists, he attacked the hard rock portions the way only Dave Grohl can.

The revamped Pantera have made it their mission to honor late brothers Dimebag Darrell (guitar) and Vinnie Paul (drums) on their ongoing tour. On Saturday night (February 24th) in Baltimore, a young fan’s resemblance to Dime caught the attention of singer Philip Anselmo.
Seeing the fan with a curly mop of hair on his head brought back memories for Anselmo, who recalled his first meetings with Dimebag. “Some people might believe in reincarnation and stuff like that,” the Pantera frontman said from the stage. “There could be a younger Dimebag right up front … Dude, just shake your head like that and everybody in the whole place will see it. Hey, turn up the lights here. Show ’em. Look at that guy.”

Anthrax members Scott Ian and Charlie Benante have teamed up with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl for a cover of Bad Brains’ “The Regulator” that will be released as a vinyl single on Record Store Day (April 20th).
The rock legends got together when Anthrax were recording their new album at Grohl’s Studio 606, forming the one-off outfit G.B.I.. While Benante is best known as the drummer in Anthrax (as well as the current incarnation of Pantera), he played bass on the Bad Brains cover, letting Grohl handle drums and lead vocals, while Ian laid down the guitar track.
As Ian mentioned in an Instagram post, proceeds from the single will benefit Bad Brains singer H.R., who is suffering from Sunct Syndrome, which causes cycles of intense headaches that make it impossible for him to perform.

Pantera kicked off their 2024 North American tour with Lamb of God on Saturday (February 3rd) in Sunrise, Florida, and the set featured a welcome surprise for diehard fans.
The reunited metal legends — featuring classic members Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown alongside Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante — performed a 14-song career-spanning set. The unexpected highlight came when Pantera revisited the dark, seven-minute masterpiece “Floods,” the first performance of the standout track from The Great Southern Trendkill since 2001. A fan favorite, “Floods” is one of the group’s more artful and doomier moments, warranting comparisons to one of Philip Anselmo’s other projects, Down.

Down — the metal supergroup featuring singer Philip Anselmo (Pantera) and guitarists Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity) and Kirk Windstein (Crowbar) — have begun working on their first new songs in nearly 10 years.

Anthrax also shared pics of Grohl hanging out with the band in the studio, including one with him posing with Anthrax members Benante, Frank Bello, and Scott Ian, along with producer Jay Ruston and Ian’s son Revel. The band captioned the pics, “New album is going to be awesome ☄️...

Type O Negative’s seminal album Bloody Kisses turned 30 this year, and Z2 Comics is celebrating the occasion with a graphic novel and picture-disc vinyl reissue.
The graphic novel will feature 12 stories based on songs from what is widely considered the ultimate gothic metal album. The book includes art and stories from contributors Andy Biersack (Black Veil Brides), Carla Harvey (Butcher Babies), Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil), and Burton C. Bell (Fear Factory), and more. A release is set for spring 2024.
“Type O Negative is one of those rare bands that created a musical genre by their very existence, and Bloody Kisses is one of those unexpected glorious releases that flipped the table of what was expected from hard rock and metal bands when it came out,” commented editor-in-chief Rantz Hoseley via a press release. “Thirty years later, there’s no band that can go head to head with what they accomplished with that album,...

Rush legend Geddy Lee headlines an upcoming Paramount+ docuseries titled Geddy Lee Asks: Are Bass Players Human Too? The four-part series, premiering December 5th, will feature Lee engaging in random activities with fellow bassists Krist Novoselic (Nirvana), Robert Trujillo (Metallica), Les Claypool (Primus), and Melissa Auf der Maur.
In the just-released trailer (watch below), we see Lee visiting each of the aforementioned bassists’ homes, whereby he cans tomatoes and fruit with Novoselic; surfs with Trujillo; goes fishing and flies in an airplane with Claypool; and jams on the bass with Auf der Maur.
“I’m trying to show the world that a bass player can do many things,” Lee is heard saying in the trailer. “Join me as I travel to the homes of four bass legends and dive deep into their lives, and their inspirations, plus some fun making music … as I try to answer one really important question: Are bass players human,...

Pantera were set to be one of the big draws for Aftershock festival this year, but fans will have to wait another year to see the legendary metal act perform at the four-day rock extravaganza in Sacramento, California. The band has dropped off the 2023 lineup, but has promised to play the 2024 edition of the fest.
In a statement on social media, Pantera cited “circumstances beyond our control” without offering any more details on the reason for the decision. However, they did give some good news in that they’ll still perform at promoter Danny Wimmer Presents’ Louder Than Life festival in Louisville, Kentucky, this weekend.
Pantera wrote, “Due to circumstances beyond our control, we will be unable to perform at this year’s edition of Aftershock next month. This event is monumental and it pains us to have to miss it. We will however be back for Aftershock 2024! A sincere...

John Travolta hobnobbed with the guys in Pantera at the metal band’s gig supporting Metallica on Friday (August 25th) at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The movie star was among a bevy of celebs who made their way backstage, including fellow actor Jason Momoa (who also joined the mosh pit) and Mötley Crüe members Tommy Lee and John 5.
Pantera posted a gallery of backstage pics on Instagram (see below), showing Travolta engaged in conversation with singer Philip Anselmo and others. Other pics show the band greeting Momoa and the Mötley Crüe members.
Current Pantera drummer Charlie Benante also posted his own pics in which he’s chatting up Travolta, and hanging out with Momoa and other celebs.
Travolta is no stranger to the hard rock and metal scene, having starred in the film The Fanatic, directed by Fred Durst. In fact, he once impressed Consequence with his knowledge of Limp Bizkit’s music.

Actor Jason Momoa, alongside John Travolta was spotted entering the Metallica moshpit and headbanging with the rest of the fans. The ‘Aquaman’ actor, 44, was seen at a Metallica concert. Attending the gig at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Jason was seen at the venue with Travolta attending the gig.
Heavy metal icons Pantera were among one of the two acts that opened up the show for Metallica, with one of the band members sharing some behind-the-scenes snaps, mirror.co.uk reported.
However, John Travolta too was seen having a blast with the ‘Face Off’ actor also entering the moshpit and rocking out with Metallica while even meeting up with the Pantera drummer.

Pantera have been inviting special guests to sing their classic song “Walk” with them during their current North American tour, and at this past Thursday’s show they were joined onstage by Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe and late guitarist Dimebag Darrell’s longtime girlfriend Rita Haney.
Video footage from the concert at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, Texas, shows the revamped Pantera lineup first being joined by Blythe, with Haney quickly following. The two share the mic for the song’s iconic chorus, with frontman Philip Anselmo putting his arm around them.
Lamb of God are supporting Pantera on the North American tour, and Blythe is a longtime friend of the band, so it wasn’t a big surprise seeing him onstage.
The relationship between Haney and Anselmo, however, is much more complex, as Dimebag’s camp long feuded with Anselmo for menacing comments he made...

Metallica kicked off the North American leg of their 2023-2024 “M72 World Tour” on Friday (August 4th) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band was joined on the bill by fellow metal legends Pantera and rising rockers Mammoth Wvh (led by Wolfgang Van Halen).
The tour (get tickets here) features Metallica performing two completely unique sets (no repeat songs) over two nights in each city, with different support acts each evening. They’ll be right back at MetLife on Sunday (August 6th), with Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills opening.
The setup has the bands performing in the round, on a circular stage in the middle of the stadium, with some fans in the “Snakepit” (the center of the circle).
While there was a forecast for thunderstorms on Friday night, that never came to be, making for a comfortable summer evening in New Jersey.

What a night! I just got back from the Pantera and Lamb of God concert at the Freedom Mortage Pavilion in Camden, NJ, and I’m still buzzing from the adrenaline. It was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot. The crowd was insane, the sound was loud, and the bands were on fire.
Legacy would be a fitting name for this tour, because let no one be mistaken, this is not a Pantera reunion tour by any means, but much more of a statement and tribute to the band’s unrelenting and dynamic legacy. It will never be called a reunion because there is no way that could ever be true, as we are sadly missing two of the band’s founding members, brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul Abbott…and they left some very big shoes to fill.

The revamped Pantera embarked on the band’s first North American headlining tour in 22 years on Friday, July 28th, in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania.
Notably, the encore consisted of the Far Beyond Driven cuts “Slaughtered” and “Revolution Is My Name,” the first time either song had been played live by Pantera since 2001.
The rest of the setlist included many of the Pantera staples and album cuts the group has been playing during its previous one-off festival performances and overseas dates.
“A New Level” from Vulgar Display of Power opened the set, and from there Philip Anselmo and company played classics such as “Mouth for War,” “I’m Broken, “5 Minutes Alone,” and their cover of Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan,” among others. Anselmo and the audience then broke into a chorus of “Happy Birthday” for bassist Rex Brown, who turned 59 the day before.

Pantera’s classic albums will be released on picture-disc vinyl for the first time as part of a 5-lp box set arriving July 21st via Rhino Records.
The collection, dubbed The Complete Studio Albums 1990-2000, includes Cowboys From Hell (1990), Vulgar Display of Power (1992), Far Beyond Driven (1994), The Great Southern Trendkill (1996), and Reinventing the Steel (2000). It’s limited to 3,500 copies sold through Rhino.com, Pantera.com, and indie retailers.
The five albums represent the band’s core discography, following a lesser-known run of four LPs in the ’80s that had more of a glam-metal vibe. The band reinvented itself with Cowboys From Hell, establishing the groove metal sound that made them one of the most revered metal acts in the world.
The reissues come at a time when Pantera are fully active again. Following the tragic passings of brothers Dimebag Darrell in 2004 and Vinnie Paul in 2018, a revamped lineup of the...

The 2023 edition of Welcome to Rockville took place over four days from Thursday (May 18th) to Sunday (May 21st) in Daytona Beach, Florida. The massive rock fest was led by headliners Tool, Pantera, Slipknot, and Avenged Sevenfold, while also featuring dozens more notable acts.
The festival closed out on Sunday with Tool’s first show of the year. The performance was particularly notable in that singer Maynard James Keenan dressed in drag just days after Governor Ron DeSantis signed a new anti-drag bill into law. As for the music, the band played a brief 10-song set that included classics like “Forty Six & 2” and “Stinkfist” alongside newer tracks like “Fear Inoculum” and “Invincible.”
Elsewhere on Sunday, Incubus paused their set for a moment to help a distressed fan. The band performed with new touring bassist Nicole Row, filling in for Ben Kenney after he underwent surgery for a brain tumor. Other highlights included sets from Deftones,...

Thrash legends Anthrax have hit the studio to work on their new album, the long-awaited follow-up to 2016’s For All Kings.

Ian and company are currently laying down tracks before vocalist Joey Belladonna and lead guitarist Jonathan Donais add their respective parts.

Legendary metal drummer Mike Portnoy is saying goodbye to Twitter, citing the social media platform’s new policy that allows anyone to buy a blue check verification for $8 a month.
Twitter recently started stripping verified accounts of their blue check marks for not paying the $8 monthly fee, which was instituted by the company’s new owner Elon Musk. While the money is no issue for Portnoy, the drummer feels the new verification process is compromised.
The ex-Dream Theater stickman, who is currently involved in several music projects — including The Winery Dogs, Metal Allegiance, Flying Colors, and Sons of Apollo, among others — had been one of the more active metal musicians on Twitter up until his stance, so he’s giving up a major communication tool by exiting the platform. For the metal veteran, it’s a matter of principle.

Those who metal together, stay together! In that spirit, Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian was joined by his wife Pearl Aday and 11-year-old son Revel onstage to perform Black Sabbath’s “Symptom of the Universe” and Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” at a recent gig.
The performance, which also featured guitarist Zach Throne and bass player Joey Vera, happened Tuesday night (March 28th) at “Ultimate Jam Night” at the Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood, California. This week’s “Ultimate Jam Night” raised funds for Animal Tracks, a California sanctuary for endangered animals.
Aday, daughter of the late Meat Loaf, is an accomplished singer herself, and belted out powerful renditions of the iconic rock songs. Revel, meanwhile, has wowed us in the past with his drumming, and he manned the kit like a champ.

Metallica have dropped the new song “72 Seasons” — the title track of their forthcoming album, arriving April 14th.
The band teased a significant portion of the song’s music video on social media before releasing the full track and music video today (March 30th). The performance clip sees the band illuminated by red lasers, giving off the effect of Metallica barreling through space.
It’s fitting visuals for what is the fastest and grooviest of the four singles we’ve heard from 72 Seasons, following “Lux Æterna,” “Screaming Suicide,” and “If Darkness Had a Son.” James Hetfield may have recently said that he and his fellow bandmates were “average” players, but this new track proves otherwise.
Lars Ulrich is locked into the pocket of the quick tempo, and the riff structures and palm-muted chugs hit with undeniable power. Hetfield’s more pronounced drawl also works nicely around the arrangement and vocal melody,...

Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” is ubiquitous at sporting events around the world. For the Virginia Tech Hokies, it has become a universal rallying cry for their various athletic programs.
When the Hokies locked up the No. 1 seed in the women’s NCAA basketball tournament, they also garnered home-court advantage, hosting the first two rounds at their own Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg. However, the NCAA treats tournament games as if they’re at a neutral site in an effort to keep the on-campus contests as fair as possible. That means no “Enter Sandman,” or the university would face a fine.
Well, the Virginia Tech student body, aka the Cassell Guard, had other ideas. At the tipoff of the Hokies’ matchup against 16-seed Chattanooga on Friday, the crowd belted out “Enter Sandman” a cappella, impressively singing the song in chorus. They were still singing when Virginia Tech’s Georgia Amoore sunk the first 3-pointer of the game.

Metallica will be embarking on their 2023-2024 world tour next month, and one of the bands supporting their North American legs is the recently reunited Pantera. While Pantera’s return has been met with some backlash, Metallica stickman Lars Ulrich thinks they have the right guy behind the drum kit.
Pantera are touring with classic members Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown along with guitarist Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante. The latter two are filling in for late brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, respectively. While the band has insisted that the reunion is a celebration of the legacies of Dime and Vinnie, some fans consider calling the band “Pantera” without the two brothers sacrilegious.
Metallica’s “M72 World Tour” hits North America this summer and fall, and again in the summer of 2024. Pantera will be providing support on the first of two shows in each city, with tickets available here.

The hip-hop artist’s appearance was part of Anthrax’s 40th-anniversary livestream, which was broadcast from a Los Angeles soundstage last July. The whole celebration is available now as Anthrax Xl on Blu-ray, CD, and digitally.

HBO Max released the official trailer for the upcoming reality dating series “Fboy Island,” which will premiere on July 29.
Hosted by Nikki Glaser, the series follows three women, Nakia Renee, Cj Franco and Sarah Emig, who move to a tropical island where they’re joined by 24 men. Half of the men are “nice guys” also looking for a real relationship, while the others are self-proclaimed “f-boys” competing for a cash prize. By the finale, all will be revealed — who is a nice guy, who is an “f-boy” and who will the women ultimately choose. The series is a social experiment that asks the age-old question: can “f-boys” truly reform or do nice guys always finish last?
Glaser will executive produce alongside creator Elan Gale, Jason Goldberg, Ben Bitonti and showrunner Sam Dean.

Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante has teamed up with Dmc of Run-dmc for his latest quarantine performance, sharing a medley with one-half of the rap-rock duo. It was later released on Bandcamp for charity with all proceeds going to MusicUnites.org.
Along with Dmc, the medley features Suicidal Tendencies bassist Ra Diaz and guitarist Rob Caggiano (Anthrax, Volbeat).
“I always wanted to do a medley of Run-dmc songs, so back in March I decided to put an arrangement together and asked these amazing people to be a part of it,” Benante says.
