Last year the The Globe & Mail released an article entitled "What is Wrong with the Canadian Film Industry?" that outlined the problems facing our country’s cinema: low box-office numbers, a crisis of English-Canadian identity, an inability to compete with Hollywood entertainments etc., etc. Focused entirely on the industry, the piece fails to mention the resurgence that had been taking root for quite some time. 2015 was an important year for Canadian cinema, but while Room, Hyena Road and Wet Bum ate up the article’s word count, three of the year’s great Canadian films by emerging directors went unnoticed: Isiah Medina’s 88:88, Kurt Walker’s Hit 2 Pass, and Kazik Radwanski’s How Heavy This Hammer. Equating cinema with ‘content,’ a product to be bought and sold, the article is as much a reflection of the problems with Canadian cinema as an exposition of it. But this insidious...

According to Fox Business Network, Donald Trump has been eyeing campaign finance chairman and Hollywood producer Steven Mnuchin to be his treasury secretary if he wins the presidential race on Tuesday. An unnamed source “with direct knowledge of the matter,” told Fbn that Mnuchin is Trump’s top choice for the job. Jack Kirby is a legend. Jack Kirby is responsible for the visual representations of pretty much any hero you can think of from Marvel. The Fantastic Four. The Hulk. Thor. Iron Man. Without Jack Kirby’s illustrations we wouldn’t have such amazing images to place along with Stan Lee’s words. Jack Kirby would have been 99 today so in honor of his amazing work, we’re going to discuss one of his most famous works.
The comic in question is The Fantastic Four, issue #48. I really enjoyed the build up to the Galactus reveal. Building up to it, you understood the team were about to face a foe that had unrivaled power. Sometimes, especially in that era of comics, the antagonists were not the most scary individuals. While Almost Human marked a memorable feature debut for up-and-comer Joe Begos, The Mind’s Eye represents an unfortunate step backwards. The film feels more like a first-time effort built on unsteady ground, stumbling over a minefield of miscues that rarely pull together the tight, fluid terrors of Almost Human. This psychokinetic Scanners homage falls into a repetition of cut-rate effects and low-budget confidence, constantly failing to marry either aspect with Begos’ passionate respect for a genre he clearly adores and respects. It all sounds great on paper, like an aggressive cut of The Men Who Stare At Goats, but actors scrunching their faces while “emitting brainwave attacks” can only entertain for so long…

As if there was every any doubt about the remarkable size and scope of Bethesda Game Studios’ hotly-anticipated sequel, Lead Producer Jeff Gardiner has claimed to have played Fallout 4 for over 400 hours without finding everything the post-apocalyptic world has to offer.
Gardiner dropped the rather terrifying tibdit during the game’s recent panel at E3 2015, stating that he’s still unearthing never-before-seen trinkets from the decimated Boston wasteland.
“I’ve played the game probably 400 hours, and I’m still finding stuff that I haven’t seen yet,” said Gardiner.

Screen reports from the opening night of Film4 FrightFest which saw the UK premiere of Adam Wingard’s The Guest.
Film4 FrightFest veteran Andy Nyman was keen to highlight that - despite its new home at the Vue Leicester Square - FrightFest was going to be exactly the same in its 15th edition.
“All the things you know and love are exactly the same. You are still going to have to queue endlessly for a piss, probably miss the beginning of the film you want to see,” joked Nyman.
Nyman was given the tricky task of following Bobcat Goldthwait, who introduced last year’s festival, and passed with flying colour thanks to a series of gently mocking insults, including the new style of splitting the Main Screen programme across three screens.
“You may or may not know that they have divided the screens into groups: the Horror Channel screen is for goths; Discovery Screens 1 and 2 are for virgins...

Lucy is making more money than Hercules.
It's a battle of the brain versus physical strength. Both Lucy and Hercules were anticipated to be summer blockbusters. The opening Friday night ticket sales result is in, and Scarlett Johansson as Lucy is outperforming Dwayne Johnson as Hercules.
According to Variety, "Lucy opened to a higher-than-anticipated $17 million and is headed toward a strong $45 million debut weekend. Meanwhile, Hercules grossed $11 million on Friday on track for a $30 million launch."
In the film Lucy, Johansson plays a superhuman who is drugged to access more brain power, and she becomes less human as the drug takes over her body. Morgan Freeman costars with Johansson and plays a Professor that is only able to hypothesize about such brain power.

Thankfully, Hercules is not an origin film. Though it is about the titular hero from Greek myth, The Legend of Hercules (2014) from earlier this year already took that approach so it is just as well. Here, the fabled strong-man (Dwayne Johnson) has already performed all but one of his legendary labors when the story opens.
The newHercules was directed by Bret Ratner of Rush Hour (1998) fame and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) infamy. The screenplay was written by Ryan Condal and Evan Spillotopoulus. This is the former’s first feature film. The latter has primarily worked on Disney animated films like Cinderella III: A Twist in Time (2007). The storyline the screenplay is based on is a comic by Steve Moore. You might be thinking that this combination of folks behind the camera is a bit like the “potpourri” category on Jeopardy, and you would not be wrong – sounds weird, could be awful.

Hercules has no right to be as entertaining as it is. It’s dumb, choppy, cheap-looking, and it even somehow manages to waste the Rock … but this big-budget jettisoning of the Greek myth, based on Steve Moore’s Radical comic, is also a million miles from the self-important grandiosity of the 300 films, or the over-cgi'd garishness of Clash of the Titans. It has a playful heart and spirited cast, and little else. But — and maybe this is just what George W. Bush called “the soft bigotry of low expectations” speaking — that turns out to be (mostly) enough.Instead of being another extremely loose retelling of the traditional tale of the demigod (the putative child of Zeus and a mere mortal queen) forced to complete 12 superhuman labors, Brett Ratner's film dispenses with the mythology in its opening scenes. It begins with highly stylized, storybooklike images of Hercules (Dwayne “The Rock...

Hercules stars Dwayne Johnson as the titular mythic hero – a being more man than immortal that catapults himself to a position of renown and respect via tales that tell of his godlike prowess on the battlefield.
Directed by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, X-Men: The Last Stand), this iteration of the Hercules story closely follows Steve Moore’s five-issue Radical Comics series Hercules: The Thracian Wars – replacing the idea of gods with the idea of a shrewd spin doctor and biographer Iolaus (Reece Ritchie). For every feat of Hercules the god, a new reality is depicted: the multi-headed hydra becomes a small army of men donning masks bearing the resemblance of a serpent.

There aren’t many things less likely to inspire passion than the words “directed by Brett Ratner.” Say what you want about crowd pleasing blockbuster factories like Michael Bay, Zack Snyder or Justin Lin, but at least their work has a clearly defined style and inspires debate. Not Brett Ratner. Renowned as a workmanlike director, his main claim to fame is his ability to bring a project in on time and under budget. So the prospect of a new addition to the Ratner filmography wasn’t exactly setting my world on fire. Adding an additional note of sourness to proceedings is the widely publicized artist-led boycott of the film on the basis that the studio has bilked the late Steve Moore, (author of the comic books that this version of Hercules is based on), out of every penny he was due through sneaky contractual finagling.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson transforms himself into the legendary Hercules, in a passion project that’s a dream come true for the actor.
This isn’t the typical Hercules that’s the stuff of legend or what we’re used to seeing on-screen when we think of the mythical half-mortal son of Zeus. Johnson’s Hercules is a man beaten down after the Twelve Labours that made him famous, working as a sword-for-hire with a really cool lion hat as he struggles with the sins of his past.
Directed by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), this Hercules draws more from the graphic novel by Steve Moore than it does directly out of legend, or say, the animated Disney film. In his latest big screen incarnation, Hercules (Johnson) has his life tested when the King of Thrace and his daughter call upon the legendary swordsman to defeat a tyrannical warlord.

Outspoken comics creator Alan Moore has made headlines over an upcoming movie, which would typically mean he's denouncing said movie. Yup. This time it's Hercules, a film that he personally has nothing to do with. Bleeding Cool reports that Alan Moore isn't decrying an adaptation of his own comic works. This time he's defending the work of long-time friend Steve Moore (no relation) whose Hercules: The Thracian War comics inspired the Bret Ratner-directed movie Hercules, which is due to hit theaters this Friday. Steve Moore passed away earlier this year, and so his dear friend Alan Moore has decided to speak up about how the comic writer was mistreated in the book's adaptation. His request to fans boils down to boycott. Alan Moore explains: "I would also ask that anybody out there who gives a damn about Steve Moore or his legacy not go to see this wretched film. It...

The Dwayne Johnson-led take on "Hercules" hits cinemas on Friday, and two people aren't that happy about it.
The first is TV's Hercules himself, Kevin Sorbo. The actor who starred as the demigod in the very popular 1990s syndicated hit "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" says he asked for a cameo in the film, but it was denied. He tells Dish Nation:
"Dwayne Johnson and I used to work out at the same gym, nice guy. We were sort of taken back they wouldn't let me in that movie, not even do a cameo. I think it's kind of stupid really. To not put me in a cameo to me is taking the business out of show business. We approached the director. I don’t know what his reasons are. I don't know if it was political or ego or what it is? To not put me in for a stupid little cameo?...

Legendary comic book writer and "Watchmen" creator Alan Moore hates Hollywood and despises each time a movie studio tries to turn his work into a film. Now he's complaining about Dwayne Johnson's "Hercules," which is based on the comic book "Hercules: The Thracian Wars," written by his friend Steve Moore (no relation), who passed away in March. Alan explained that Steve had a contract with Radical Comics, which sold the film rights to the "Hercules" comic to MGM. Steve was never contacted about this and never received a payment. Steve reached out to Radical, remembering from his contract that he is owed $15,000 if his work is ever sold to a film studio. "When I went down to see him a couple of week later, I said, 'So, did you get any response from Radical about your e-mail?' He said, 'No, I didn't. But I went away and dug out the contract,...

Graphic novelist and professional grump Alan Moore does not like most things, up to and including film adaptations of his or anyone else’s work. So when he called for a boycott of the upcoming Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson as the titular hero, I was perfectly prepared to pass the item by without giving it much attention. However, Moore’s reasons for the boycott are not in the grumpy and paranoid realm, for once. He’s doing it for his now-deceased friend Steve Moore (no relation), the man who wrote the original comic books on which the film is based.
The crux of the matter is this: Steve Moore received no payment when his comic Hercules: The Thracian Wars was picked up for film treatment. He therefore asked that his name not be used to promote it. Seems like a more or less fair deal, right? Well, Steve Moore passed away earlier this year,...

Brett Ratner's upcoming Hercules (an adaption of Steve Moore's Hercules: The Thracian Wars), lead by GI Joe star Dwayne Johnson, is less than a week from it's Us release but Watchmen writer Alan Moore is far from impressed. The English writer has called for a boycott of the film, describing it as "wretched." Moore claims that the reason for his disgust is the film's lack of faithfulness to Steve Moore's (no relation) contract concerning the source material. Acording to Alan Moore, Steve was promised $15,000 if the adaption ever came to fruition however the book's publishers, Radical Comics, are refusing to pay, saying that this was never part of their contract. The film will release in the Us next week on July 29th. Will this affect your decision to see the Fast And Furious star take on the mythical god? Sign off your thoughts below! Both man and myth,...

"My time has not come yet. Not sure about yours." We're anxious to see if anything that Brett Ratner has done with the Greek epic Hercules can get us interested in the film, and if the latest extended TV spot for the film starring Dwayne Johnson is any indicator, we're going to be very disappointed. The film just looks like a dud, with dialogue that feels contrived, forced and phony. Johnson's charisma just isn't working this time, and it actually seems to be working against him here. Not even John Hurt or Ian McShane seem to be able to offer anything of value to the proceedings. It's like The Scorpion King all over again. Watch now! Here's the extended TV spot for Brett Ratner's Hercules from YouTube: Hercules is directed by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, X-Men: The Last Stand), written by Ryan Condal and Evan Spiliotopoulos, and based on...

The theatrical trailer for MGM and Paramount's epic Hercules didn't really do much to turn our crank. Part of the problem seems to be Dwayne Johnson looking the part, but not really fitting the role of the Greek mythological hero. Johnson just doesn't have the right presence as an actor to make it work, despite his hulking presence as an action star. Alas, the film is still coming this summer, and it'll be the first one from director Brett Ratner we've gotten in quite some time. Now a new TV spot shows off a bit more from the film, including Johnson heading off to do something foolish, like starring in a Hercules movie. Watch! Here's the first TV spot for Brett Ratner's Hercules from the film's YouTube page: Hercules is directed by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, X-Men: The Last Stand), written by Ryan Condal and Evan Spiliotopoulos, and based...

The latest trailer for Brett Ratner's Hercules is by far the best one. And no, we're not talking about the serious domestic one that debuted early Tuesday. The latest is an international trailer, which besides having a sense of humor, also gives us a taste of other characters who will appear in the movie, you know. Check it out below.
Based on Radical Comics’ Hercules by Steve Moore, this ensemble-action film is a revisionist take on the classic myth, Hercules. Dwayne Johnson stars as the Greek hero. Here's an official synopsis of the movie:

Brett Ratner's take on the Greek Mythological hero is set to hit theaters later on this Summer, and so far, we've only seen one trailer for "The Rock" led film. This morning, however, brings an all new trailer, and better look at the upcoming adventure. Come inside to check it out!
I like this trailer much more than I did the first one. I'm still not entirely sold on the film just yet, but I'm getting there. At the very least, it looks like it could be an entertaining, albiet mindless, film for the Summer. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I'd love to see a smarter Greek Mythology film come out, one that can pull at your emotions on top of dazzling your eyes. Oh well, what did you guys think of this new trailer?

We gotta be honest, we nearly forgot that "Hercules" was still coming this summer. Maybe you did too. There's a veritable onslaught of blockbusters set to descend on multiplexes, and this season won't be complete without Dwayne Johnson flexing his impressive muscles. And he'll do that and much more in this latest take on the Greek myth, with a new full length trailer dropping today. Brett Ratner gets behind the camera for this effort, which is actually based on the graphic novel by Steve Moore and launches from there. "The idea was to take the spirit of the graphic novel, which we liked, and then create a script and a story based on that that still gave a very unique twist on the story of Hercules," The Rock told Collider this spring. "But we also pay attention, respect and homage to the mythology of Hercules as it relates to the...

July 25 is edging nearer and nearer, meaning we’re getting closer to the release of Paramount and MGM’s film, “Hercules.” The film, based on Radical Comics’ “Hercules” by Steve Moore, stars Dwayne Johnson as the mythical hero himself alongside Golden Globe Winner Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Joseph Fiennes, Peter Mullan and Academy Award®-nominee John Hurt. The film will show Hercules going through the tremendous task of The 12 Labors, but with a revisionist slant. Also, since Hercules is played by none other than Johnson, whose previous incarnation was as wrestling hero The Rock, you can expect tons of action, including sword fighting, fists, and anything else that needs bulging muscles. The massive Nemean Lion? The razor-tusked Erymanthian Boar? The legendary three-headed dog Cerberus? The hissing Lernaean Hydra? None of these great beasts can compete to the unholy might of Hercules! Give this brawny warrior a club and he is unstoppable! At least it seems that way in Hercules' latest TV spot. The 30-second commercial premiered last night at the MTV Video Music Awards, succinctly giving the event's audience a juicy taste of Dwayne Johnson's latest action adventure. Now you might worry that Hercules is showing off its best bits way too soon, but each of these battles is a part of this demigod's mythic 12 Labors. And all of these play as the precursor to Hercules' main plotline. Evan Spiliotopoulos and Ryan Condal drew inspiration not only from the Roman mythology, but also from Steve Moore's graphic novel Hercules. This adventure has the titular hero working as a mercenary.

Paramount Pictures has released a new TV spot for "Hercules" starring Dwayne Johnson. The epic adventure opens in theaters from July 25th, 2014, and is based on Radical Comics’ "Hercules" by Steve Moore. Also in the cast are Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Joseph Fiennes, Peter Mullan and John Hurt. Fourteen hundred years ago, a tormented soul walked the earth that was neither man nor god. Hercules was the powerful son of the god king Zeus, for this he received nothing but suffering his entire life. After twelve arduous labors and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back on the gods finding his only solace in bloody battle. Over the years he warmed to the company of six similar souls, their only bond being their love of fighting and presence of death. These men and woman never question where they go to fight or why or whom,...

(Cbr) MTV has posted a new clip from the Brett Ratner-directed "Hercules" in anticipation of the MTV Movie Awards on April 13. The footage features Dwayne Johnson as Hercules, John Hurt as Cotys and more as Hercules’ army walks straight into a trap. It’s not the first footage revealed from the upcoming film — a teaser trailer released in late March — but it certainly gives a much better idea of what to expect from the movie. Based on the Radical Publishing series "Hercules: The Thracian Wars" by Steve Moore and Admira Wijaya, the film is a slightly different take on the mythological demigod, following his journey as a sword-for-hire who is contracted by the King of Thrace to train his men into the greatest army in history. Opening July 25, "Hercules" also stars Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Joseph Fiennes, Peter Mullan, Rebecca Ferguson, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Aksel Hennie and Reece Ritchie.
