Keshet, best known for turning Israeli drama Hatufim (Prisoners of War) into the long-running Showtime hit Homeland, has had to tackle the Covid-19 crisis on a number of fronts. It operates a broadcast network in Israel, runs a slew of non-scripted production companies across Europe and has a burgeoning scripted division run out of Los Angeles by Peter Traugott.
The latter is responsible for shows including The Baker and the Beauty, the romantic musical-comedy that launched on ABC earlier this month, and was in the middle of putting together drama pilot La Brea, from The Enemy Within’s David Applebaum, when the production shutdown happened. This was on top of the fact that its English-language remake of Israeli drama False Flag, starring Uma Thurman for Apple, was also mid-shoot.

Take Israeli director Avi Nesher out of Israel, and he creates celluloid crap of the third order. Consider She (1982) with Sandahl Bergman. Or Doppelganger (1993) with Drew Barrymore? Or even Ritual (2002) with Jennifer Grey? If you haven’t been face-to-face with any of these features, you’re probably being rewarded for accomplishing something quite wonderful in a former life.
But drop-ship Nesher back to his native country, and he can surprise you. Turn Left at the End of the World (2004) is semi-engaging look at the plight of Indian immigrants living in the backwoods of Israel during the sixties. As for The Secrets (2007), here’s an exceptionally fine tale of an Orthodox Jewish young woman who wants to break all the rules by studying the Talmud and living her life as a lesbian. Really a must-see.
Now Nesher’s latest effort, The Matchmaker, is currently trodding down the theater aisles. No confetti is needed.

"Traffic Light" is a new Fox sitcom from David Hemingson, a producer on "How I Met Your Mother"and "The Deep End," and Adir Miller, creator of "Ramzor," an Israeli series upon which "Traffic Light" is based. It centers around three male friends in Chicago and their various significant others, each relationship fitting nicely into the traffic light metaphor.
The three high school/college buddies are Mike (David Denman), Adam (Nelson Franklin) and Ethan (Kris Marshall), who are accompanied by Mike's wife Lisa (Lisa Lapira), Adam's girlfriend Callie (Aya Cash) and Ethan's girlfriend of the week, plus his bulldog Carl.
As far as the current landscape of intersecting-couples-sitcoms goes, "Traffic Light" is, at first glance, preferable to ABC's "Better With You" and NBC's "Perfect Couples." But that isn't exactly a ringing endorsement. The problem with all those shows is that they seem to be trying to cash in on the success of "Modern Family,...

This wasn't just a surprising ceremony. It was total humiliation. Intimate Grammar, Nir Bergman's moving story of a boy who mysteriously stops growing, was the favorite to win. Nominated for 12 awards, it was so highly favored to win that the printers were just waiting to complete the one sheet tagline, "Winner of Xx Ophir Awards." With a release date set exactly one day after the ceremony, this beautiful film didn't win a single award. Not even one. There's something fishy about why this went home empty-handed, since Bergman is very much appreciated in the industry, being involved in high profile projects in cinema (Broken Wings), and in television (In Treatment). However, the winner of this year's Ophir ceremony is the lovely crowd-pleaser The Mission of the Human Resources Manager, by director Eran Riklis. The story of a human resources manager in a bakery in Jerusalem, who sets out on...

The nominations for the Israeli Film Academy awards (The Ophirs) were announced this week and as expected, Nir Bergman's "Intimate Grammar" is at the top of the leader board with 12 nominations, but there are a few more surprises worth noting: Dover Kosashvili's "Infiltration" continues to divide audiences - his film was excluded from the final list of Best Picture nominees, but Kosashvili himself received a Best Director nomination, plus 5 other mentions for a surprising tally of six. Snapping up the Best Picture nom away from Kosashvili is "Mabul" (Flood) a surprise entry by first time director Guy Nativ. This film was warmly received by Academy members, but since this was a directing debut by Nativ, the 6 nominations (including best picture) are much more than what could have been expected. Moshe Ivgi's "And on the Third Day" is another film that divided academy members. None of them were indifferent to it,...

After dishing out on some of the possible contenders, here's my second entry on the race for this year's Ophir Awards. Here's an overview of some more films up for awards: Dani Menkin's Je t'aime I Love you Terminal Working with a Before Sunrise/Sunset-like template, this is a tale of two young strangers “forced” to spend a short time with one another. Danny Niv (Aka "Mooki") is a well known Israeli rapper, who moonlights as an actor (he had a small part in the 2002's Broken Wings) and despite his good turn here, he is juxtaposed to a female character that is closer to Sally Hawkins's character in Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky than Julie Delpy in Linklater's classic, thus makes this fall into a mouldy sitcom territory. Menkin is best known for his doc film 39 Pounds of Love, but this attempt into the fiction film realm (see trailer) won't gain any traction among voters.

Fox's new comedy series, Mixed Signals, will be premiering midseason and will air on Tuesday nights at 9:30 p.m (see Fox's full fall and midseason schedules). We have a promo and three sneak peeks for you below.
Mixed Signals is a new comedy series about three longtime friends and their attempts to reconcile the irreconcilable: to balance their relationships with their need for freedom. The series reveals how friendships and romances enhance – and further complicate – the lives of men and the women who love them.
Ethan (Kris Marshall, Human Target, "My Family") is the perpetual bachelor. He loves women, and when he's in, he's all in – at least for three weeks. Charming, genuine and hopelessly independent, Ethan is finding out that as he gets older, the pool of women who are willing to take things day by day is rapidly evaporating.

Veteran comedy writer David Hemingson has been named executive producer/co-showrunner on Fox’s newly picked up comedy series Traffic Light alongside the project’s writer/executive producer Bob Fisher. Hemingson had already been involved in the pilot and key meetings leading to Traffic Light’s series pickup yesterday. Based on an Israeli format, Traffic Light revolves around three male friends. In fact, I hear it was the strong resemblance between that relationship and Fisher’s real-life close friendship with Hemingson and fellow comedy writer Tad Quill that prompted him to take on Traffic Light. Also executive producing Traffic Light are Adir Miller, Avi Nir, Ran [...]...
