The Halo expanded universe goes far beyond Master Chief. In fact, Halo Infinite‘s new setting, a Halo ring never before explored in the games, connects to a story set hundreds of thousands of years before humanity’s war with the Covenant.
Installation 07, or “Zeta Halo” as it’s referred to by the Unsc, was built by the ancient Forerunners (the advanced alien species that preceded modern humanity and the Covenant) as the ultimate weapon meant to assert their control over the galaxy that later used to wipe out the parasitic Flood. But it also once housed humans. How did humanity get to this Halo ring and what purpose did they serve in ancient galactic history? We learn much more about humanity’s secret history with the Forerunners and Installation 07 in the Forerunner Trilogy novels by Greg Bear.
While it’s set three years after the events of Halo 5:...

San Diego Comic-Con, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, went from hotel basement to a must-see pop culture pilgrimage.
Whether you know it best as San Diego Comic-Con, Comic-Con, or Sdcc, for more than 130,000 people annually, Comic-Con International: San Diego is the show for fandom.
There were cons held before Sdcc, and there are larger ones, but the San Diego-based nonprofit event, celebrating its 50th, is The Con.
Each year, San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter is overtaken by fans celebrating pop culture, an entertainment industry seeking to generate buzz, and media outlets from all over the world covering it. The city also benefits financially: the event produced a $147 million regional impact during fiscal year 2018, according to the San Diego Convention Center Corporation research.

Aliens invade once again in Independence Day: Resurgence. Ryan reviews another explosive close encounter...
When eager movie-goers queued up around the block for Independence Day in 1996, quite a number of critics were baffled. Here was a film widely criticised for its hackneyed plot and wooden dialogue, which didn’t even pretend to take itself seriously, and yet still the alien invasion-disaster hybrid was breaking attendance records.
"Judging from the summer's record-breaking box-office grosses," one writer moaned, "audiences no longer care - or, more depressing, are incapable of detecting - that the plots of movies don't track."
In many ways, Independence Day set the template for 21st century summer movies. Its event status was trumpeted by a marketing campaign almost as huge as the megalithic alien ships that descended on Earth’s quaking cities. Its multi-strand plot, ensemble cast and panavision destruction made it the unwitting grandfather of such explosive movies as Transformers,...

Nb: This article contains major spoilers for Interstellar.
Whatever your opinion of Interstellar, it’s difficult to fault the scale of Christopher Nolan’s odyssey. Propelled by great blasts from composer Hans Zimmer’s church organs, Interstellar explores both the fragility of human relationships and the enormity of the universe, our need for interconnection and also our desire to strike out and explore the unknown.
From its genesis, Interstellar was a movie with big ideas. Beginning life in 2006 as a project for Steven Spielberg to direct, screenwriter Jonathan Nolan (brother of Christopher) was hired to pen the script, based on an original concept by producer Lynda Obst and theoretical physicist Kip Thorne. Jonathan worked on the project for several years before Spielberg departed, and when Christopher Nolan took...

O’Connor began by explaining the daunting challenges of building that new studio. The first challenge was to build the studio itself, while the second was to take over a beloved franchise that a lot of people had developed a deep love and appreciation for. By now, you've had a chance to check out the two minute-plus trailer for Halo 4 from producer David Fincher and director Tim Miller. Beyond showing off a group of the new Promethean enemy type, the trailer is actually pretty slim on details about the story of Halo 4, serving instead as a refresher on the Master Chief's backstory.
With that in mind, let's take a look at some of the key bits in the trailer and where they fit in the Halo canon. This won't be super-exhaustive, and might bump up against some of the conflicting pieces of fiction that have come out since 2000, but of course, I'm sure you'll let me know if I got anything wrong via Facebook or Twitter.
So let's dive in.

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.

On April 16th 2011, science fiction author Stephen Hunt sent out a press release to genre websites, including Fgt, announcing a letter of protest signed by 85 authors of sci-fi and fantasy literature sent to the BBC.
This letter, penned by Hunt, complained that the BBC 2 had not covered science fiction, fantasy, and horror fiction sufficiently in their World Book Night programming on March 5th, 2011. The programs that particularly bothered Hunt were called “The Books We Really Read”, an episode of The Culture Show, hosted by comedian Sue Perkins and “New Novelists: 12 of the Best.”
Hunt quoted himself in his press release as outlining his contempt for the BBC shows:

April Derleth was only 56 when she past away on Monday, March 21, 2011, in her home in Sauk City, Wisconsin USA from unexpected, but natural, causes. She was also the publisher of Arkham House Publishing, which was founded by her father to publish the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
Her father was author August Derleth, who co-founded Arkham House Publishers in 1939 with author Donald Wandrei, and who co-authored and posthumously published many of Lovecraft's later works. August died in 1971, when both April and her brother Walden became owners of Arkham House. In 1994, April became majority stockholder, president and CEO of Arkham House and remained in that capacity until her passing on the 21st.
Some of the other authors who were first published by Arkham House include great sci-fi and horror writers like Henry S. Whitehead, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert Bloch, Evangeline Walton, Ramsey Campbell, Michael Bishop, Greg Bear, Ray Bradbury and James Tiptree,...

We're in a visual age, with multiple teasers, trailers and clips for almost every movie, and now even static media are being turned into videos as indicated by the growth of motion comics and August's promo trailer for Mark Millar's new CLiNT magazine.
The latest such example is the machinima-inspired trailer for Greg Bear's latest novel Hull Zero Three.
Creating brand-new video game visuals is an innovative way of advertising a text-based book and I thought it worth a mention here so I've included it below.
The textures, design and walkthrough for the trailer were built with help from the Quake 2 World project - a free, standalone first person shooter video game available at www.quake2world.net
The official description is as follows:
Set in the darkest, coldest reaches of space, Hull Zero Three is the story of one man who wakes up cold, alone, and confused...

First, the raw numbers: this is director and writer Gareth Edwards’ first feature, the movie cost a purported $15,000, internationally speaking the film has grossed over 1.5 million dollars, this is the one film you need to see this fall.
One of the spectacular aspects of a movie that is labeled sci-fi even though we only really glimpse the science of the fiction at the very beginning and then near the end which, really, is the crowning achievement of this little film that could, is that this movie exists at all. Actor Scoot McNairy, last seen in the very sweet and gentile film In Search of a Midnight Kiss, and his co-star Whitney Able are essentially starring in a film where...

Ghengis Khan shook up the world in the 12th Century, and now in the 21st Century Neal Stephenson's novel about him may shake up the publishing world: It's partly interactive, partly social media, and wholly digital.
The Mongoliad promises to be unlike any other book ever written. For starters it's written, in part, by Neal Stephenson, whose ideas in earlier novels like Snow Crash and The Diamond Age have contributed to many modern marvels like Google Earth and augmented reality. When you learn sci-fi writer Greg Bear is contributing to the team effort too, it makes the whole thing even more promising.
The innovation in The Mongoliad isn't in its team writing effort, however: It's in the entire concept of a serialized, dynamic, digital "book" that includes video, imagery, music, and background articles among the text of the storyline and comes with a social media companion, with which fans/readers can comment and interact.

Science fiction writers of every generation had their own visions of the future, but what if their predictions became a reality? Rob dons his silver suit and delves into the archives to find out...
To me, living in 2010 seems like the future (well a bit anyway), and some of the things people dreamt of in years gone by have indeed come to pass. We have iPods which contain all our music, videos and data like the PADDs in Star Trek, have unlocked parts of the human genome, cloned livestock and created primitive artificial life. And while we don't have jet-packs, teleporters or the ability to travel to Mars, current technology hasn't don't too badly on the whole.
We love our technology, all sleek, thin and mobile, full of wafer-thin elements that can pass data at massive rates, wrapped up in shiny and lovingly-designed bits of kit. The ‘aesthetic of the...

This may, possibly, be one future of the novel: as an app. And who better to push the limits of writing than Neal Stephenson, an author whose novels have already explored weird and unusual corners of sci-fi, including intelligent books.
Late yesterday in San Francisco, at the Sf App Showcase, a sneaky little startup company called Subutai demonstrated some of the tech that'll be going into the Mongoliad app. This oddly-named creature is actually what we're interested in--a reinvention of the novel as a serialized publication through a dedicated app. Stephenson isn't the only one taking part, as both Greg Bear and Nicole Galland will be writing too, but Stephenson is really the core of the project.
This is exciting, as anyone who's familiar with his Diamond Age novel will attest: This book imagines a future where a super-smart, partially artificial intelligent book is created, and acts as a young girl's life guide.
