In season three of Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, anchor Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) travels to Italy for a complicated, emotional confrontation with her disgraced former co-host and lover, Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell); the scene takes place during the early days of the pandemic as the coronavirus begins its rampage across the globe. Veteran Emmy-winning editor Sidney Wolinsky — who this year received a career achievement award from the American Cinema Editors — cut the episode.
Wolinsky says he used wider shots when Alex first shows up at Mitch’s villa, which allowed the viewer to understand the geography. “...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched “La Amara Vita,” the seventh episode of Season 2 of “The Morning Show,” streaming now on Apple TV Plus.
After the sexual harassment and abuse allegations against Uba anchor Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) came to light in the first episode of Apple TV Plus drama “The Morning Show,” he lost his job and eventually his family. In the second season, he lost his life.
The decision to kill off Mitch was because his story had effectively run out, showrunner Kerry Ehrin tells Variety. She did not see him attempting to claw his way back to a media job after all that had happened, for example. But, she says, originally his ending was “a lot more ambiguous on the page.” It was Carell, she notes, who “pitched the idea that it was a more active choice, which I thought was really interesting...

Updated with full list of winners: Netflix’s Aaron Sorkin drama The Trial of the Chicago 7 won the marquee Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) honor Saturday to cap the American Cinema Editors’ 71st annual Ace Eddie Awards.
Alan Baumgarten, Ace, edited the pic, about the unrest around the 1968 Democratic National Convention. It puts him and the film in frontrunner status in the Best Film Editing Oscar race, where it is competing against fellow Ace nominees Nomadland and Sound of Metal along with Promising Young Woman and The Father.
Baumgarten in his virtual acceptance speech thanked Sorkin for his “enthusiasm for editing — it was a pleasure to collaborate with you.” He also thanks his wife, with a nod to the pandemic: “I think myself, and as everybody understands, I brought the work home literally — thank you for your patience and understanding.”

“Soul” won the award for animated film, while “My Octopus Teacher” took the prize in the documentary category.
In the television categories, winners included “Schitt’s Creek,” “Ted Lasso,” “Better Call Saul,” “Ozark” and “The Queen’s Gambit.

The high-seas World War II drama “Greyhound” clocks in with a svelte running time of 91 minutes, including end credits. But an extremely tightly wound and unrelenting 91 minutes it is. Starring and written by Tom Hanks, the plot is densely concentrated on about five days in February 1942, as Hanks’ Commander Krause is leading a convoy of destroyers through the so-called Black Pit.
That’s a stretch of the North Atlantic Ocean too far from land for the Air Force to provide assistance, leaving the 37 ships vulnerable to lethal German U-boats swarming below the surface.
In the film (streaming now on AppleTV+), every moment, day and night, in the Black Pit in fraught with peril. And instrumental to that gripping tension was the work of film editors Sidney Wolinsky and Mark Czyzewski who combined to spend nearly a year and a half piecing the movie together.

Miracle of miracles — last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner went to a genuine monster movie! Guillermo del Toro’s overachieving Gill Man spectacle features a gratifyingly anti-authoritarian attitude. The emotional love story is as pure as a silent movie — and has the sentimental commitment to pull an audience into its dreamy Fairy Tale horror fantasy.

Of the nine Best Picture nominees at the Oscars, “Dunkirk” did the best at the guild awards. It ended up winning with five (casting directors, film editors, sound editors and visual effects wizards) of the 11 at which it contended. It lost with the actors, art directors, cinematographers, costume designers, directors and producers. This WWII epic had not been in the running with the makeup artists & hairstylists or writers.
“The Shape of Water” was nominated at a whopping 12 ceremonies (having been snubbed only by the Visual Effects Society). It prevailed with four, including a shocker at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 20, when it won Best Period Costumes over Oscar frontrunner “Phantom Thread.” This fantasy film also won with the directors, producers and art directors.

“The Shape of Water” pulled off a shocker at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 20, winning Best Period Costumes over Oscar frontrunner “Phantom Thread.” That unexpected outcome marked its fourth win from the 11 guilds weighing in to date. This fantasy film previously prevailed with the directors, producers and art directors. It is in contention with the two remaining groups on deck: the makeup artists & hair stylists and sound editors. The only group with which it did not contend this awards season was the Visual Effects Society.
Of the other Best Picture nominees, “Dunkirk” has gone four for nine at these precursor prizes (casting directors, film editors, sound editors and visual effects wizards). It is in the running with the sound editors.
“Blade Runner 2049” won with both groups that held awards last weekend: the cinematographers and sound editors. It had previously prevailed with the art directors.

Of the nine Oscar nominees for Best Picture, “Dunkirk” is faring best with the guild awards. It has won with four of the 10 to date (casting directors, film editors, sound editors and visual effects wizards). It is in contention at two of the remaining three groups (costume designers, sound mixers) but missed out on any recognition from the makeup artists & hair stylists. Those three guilds will hand out awards during final voting for the Oscars, which kicks off on Feb. 20 for eight days.
While “Dunkirk” racked up nominations from 11 of the 13 guilds (it was also snubbed by the writers), “The Shape of Water” did it one better, with only the Visual Effects Society overlooking this fantasy film in its nominations. It won with three groups to date: the directors, producers and art directors. And it is in contention at all three of the upcoming awards.

The Oscar frontrunner for Best Picture, “The Shape of Water,” is in contention for prizes from 12 of the 13 guilds. The one group that didn’t nominate it, the Visual Effects Society, held its awards on Feb. 13. One of the other eight Best Picture nominees, “Dunkirk,” won best supporting visual effects here. That brought its overall recognition from the guilds up to three, having previously prevailed with the casting directors and film editors.
This latest win ties this WWII epic with “The Shape of Water,” which has also been cited by three of the eight groups to be heard from to date: the directors, producers and art directors. It lost its races at the awards held by the actors, casting directors, film editors and writers.

The Oscar frontrunner for Best Picture, “The Shape of Water,” has reaped bids from 12 of the 13 guild awards, having been snubbed only by the visual effects artists. This fantasy film has won with three of the seven groups to be heard from to date: the directors, producers and art directors. It lost its races at the awards held by the actors, casting directors, film editors and writers.
It was bested at the Writers Guild of America Awards on Feb. 11 by “Get Out,” one of the other eight Best Picture nominees. That satire contends at eight guilds in total and has also won a prize from the DGA for first-time helmer Jordan Peele. The other winner with the WGA was Best Picture contender “Call Me By Your Name.”

“The Shape of Water,” which reaped a leading 13 Oscar nominations, is in the running for 12 of the 13 guild awards missing out only with the visual effects artists. On the weekend after Oscar nominations were announced on Jan. 23, the art directors and film editors revealed their picks for the best of the year. Prior to the unveiling of the Academy Awards roster, we’d already heard from the casting directors, producers and actors. Five more groups — cinematographers, directors, sound editors, visual effects wizards and writers — will weigh in before final voting for the Oscars commences on Feb. 20. The remaining three (costume designers, makeup artists & hair stylists, sound mixers) will have their say during the eight days of voting for the Academy Awards that ends on Feb. 27.

“Dunkirk,” Christopher Nolan’s trippy, clock-ticking experiment in pure cinema, “I, Tonya,” the black comedy about notorious figure skater Tonya Harding (Oscar nominee Margo Robbie), and “Coco,” Pixar’s ode to Día de los Muertos, took top editing honors in drama, comedy, and animation respectively at the 68th Ace Eddie Awards Friday at the Beverly Hilton.
Ace is a great Oscar predictor for editing (23 out of the last 27 years ), which now makes “Dunkirk” the favorite for editor Lee Smith. It beat Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” the Best Picture Oscar frontrunner, edited by Sidney Wolinsky. And, surprisingly, for comedy, “I Tonya” (Tatiana Riegel) triumphed over “Baby Driver” (Jonathan Amos & Paul Machliss) and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (Jon Gregory). These are the five Oscar nominees for Best Film Editing. However, as a Best Picture predictor, Ace hasn’t fared as well, picking the winner 16 out of the last 27 years.

The American Cinema Editors handed out the Eddie Awards on Friday (Jan. 26). Oscar watchers were in attendance for the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton as they are keenly aware that Ace is aces as one of the best indicators of which film takes home the Best Picture Oscar
Since 1990, the film that came up with an Ace went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 17 times. And in seven of the 10 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, the Eddie champ was at least a contender for Best Picture, including last year when both the drama winner (“Arrival”) and the comedy/musical champ (“La La Land”) were among the eight Best Picture nominees that lost the top Oscar to “Moonlight.”

The nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards are in and Guillermo del Toro's fantastic film, The Shape of Water, did pretty damn good as it leads the pack with thirteen of the nominations! Those include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay and more. This was one of my favorite movies of the year, so it was great to see it get a lot of love.
Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk ended up with eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. Jordan Peele's Get Out also landed a few nominations including Best Director, which was cool!
As expected, James Franco and his film The Disaster Artist got snubbed amid sexual misconduct allegations surrounding the actor.

With its three bids from the Mpse, “The Shape of Water” is represented at 12 of the 13 guild awards; the Visual Effects Society had ended a streak that had seen it reap bids from the first 11 precursor prizes to reveal their rosters.
“Dunkirk” is at 11, having missed out with the writers and makeup artists/hairstylists. The Best Picture frontrunner, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” is in contention at nine guilds.”Get Out” and “Lady Bird” are each missing from the line-ups of five guilds.

With PGA and Critics Choice wins, “The Shape of Water” is peaking just before Tuesday’s Oscar nominations. And, thanks to its surreal, period trappings, Guillermo del Toro’s inclusive love story will dominate the craft nominations, with as many as eight to be had, which would tie “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
Following close behind will be Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” and Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049.” But the biggest crafts story will be if Asc nominee Rachel Morrison also becomes the first female cinematography nominee for Dee Rees’ “Mudbound,” And it will be noteworthy if the production and costume designing team of Sarah Greenwood and Jacqueline Durran score double nominations for their work on “Beauty and the Beast” and “Darkest Hour.”

This morning the BAFTAs announced their nominees for 2018.
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is the biggest awards group outside of America. Traditionally, the films nominated here are also reflected at the Oscars.
There were a few surprises with this mornings nominees, namely another omission of any female director in the directing category. Greta Gerwig has been expected to land this nomination within most awards groups, but as of yet keeps being overlooked for her directorial debut Lady Bird. Lady Bird also didn't make the cut in the Best Film category, but the BAFTAs only nominate five, where at the Oscars there can be up to ten nominees.

It’s not a perfect correlation, but when looking for hints as to what voters might do, anything helps. Here, they’ve nominated almost all of the likely Best Picture nominees, so that’s a help. Last year, the big winners were Arrival and La La Land, though Hacksaw Ridge...

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists has announced the nominees for their eleventh annual Awfj Eda Awards. This year, Awfj presents Eda Awards in 25 categories, divided into three sections: the standard “Best Of” section, the Female Focus awards, and the irreverent Eda Special Mention awards — including Actress Most in Need of a New Agent and the Awfj Hall of Shame Award. Standout nominees this year include “Lady Bird,” “I, Tonya,” “Get Out,” “Girls Trip,” “Mudbound,” and “Call Me by Your Name.”
This year’s nomination is a vibrant mix of lauded films and performances, and some of the Awfj’s more off-beat notations, like that Hall of Shame Award (this year, bestowed on “Darren Aronofsky and all associated with ‘mother!,'” “Louis Ck and all associated with ‘I Love You, Daddy,'” and “Showbiz Sexual Tormentors: Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Brett Ratner, et al.” Other signature Eda Awards include Most...

Moreover, don’t sleep on “Detroit’s” William Goldenberg as an upset nominee. He’s a two-time winner and five-time nominee and very well respected within the branch. [Posted Jan 2]
