Steven Moffat has written the 2024 Doctor Who Christmas Special entitled Joy To The World.
Almost as soon as Russell T Davies announced he was returning as showrunner on Doctor Who, fans began speculating about who else might be returning. Top of the list for many was Steven Moffat, who’s clocked up more Doctor Who scripts than any other writer.
Rumour turned into fact earlier this year, when it was confirmed that Moffat had indeed returned to the fold to pen the third episode in Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson’s debut series, entitled Boom. Set to be darker in nature than the opening two episodes, the official synopsis reads as follows:
Caught in the middle of a devastating war on Kastarion 3, the Doctor is trapped when he steps on a landmine. Can he save himself and Ruby, plus the entire planet… without moving?

John Cleese is rebooting his classic BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers, it was announced this week.
The British actor and writer, who starred in the original series as hotel owner Basil Fawlty, is collaborating on the new show with Spinal Tap filmmaker Rob Reiner.
He will write and star in the revival, which is currently in development, along with his daughter, Camilla Cleese.
The Fawlty Towers reboot will reportedly explore “how Cleese’s over-the-top, cynical and misanthropic Basil Fawlty navigates the modern world”.
Cleese claimed that an initial meeting about the series had yielded “one of the best creative sessions I can remember”.
So what happened to the main four castmembers of Fawlty Towers?
John Cleese
After Fawlty Towers finished, Cleese, who played bedraggled hotelier Basil Fawlty, went on to enjoy a successful film career.
Highlights include 1981’s Time Bandits, directed by fellow Monty Python star Terry Gilliam, and the screwball...

Denzel Washington has a reputation as one of the best American actors of all time, and it's easy to understand why. First, there's the nine Oscar nominations for acting including two wins, but even if he hadn't been lauded so, his career speaks for itself. It began in earnest in the mid-1980s, when he started to make the transition from television drama "St. Elsewhere" to movies. Theater has also always been a presence for Washington, a Tony Award winner, especially the work of August Wilson.
Washington has certain directors who he has collaborated with many times, most famously Spike Lee. There's also Tony Scott, Antoine Fuqua, Edward Zwick, Jonathan Demme, and Carl Franklin. Since 2000, he has mainly made thrillers and played heroic characters, but ironically he won the Best Actor Oscar for one of his rare villainous roles. Washington always brings a magnetic charisma to whatever part he is playing,...

“Gentleman Jack” has been canceled at HBO after two seasons, Variety has confirmed.
Set in 19th century Yorkshire, the historical drama is based on the life of Anne Lister (Suranne Jones), a landowner and industrialist who is often referred to as the “first modern lesbian” due to her diaries, written in secret code, that documented her relationships with women. “Gentleman Jack” is a co-production with BBC One and also stars Sophie Rundle, Joe Armstrong, Amelia Bullmore, Rosie Cavaliero, Gemma Whelan, Gemma Jones, Timothy West and Tom Lewis.
“HBO will not be moving forward with a third season of ‘Gentleman Jack,'” the network said in a statement to Variety. “When we began this journey more than five years ago, we knew the series’ creator Sally Wainwright had a uniquely compelling vision, and it’s been tremendously gratifying to see how Anne Lister’s journey has resonated with viewers. Sally Wainwright’s Rts-winning and BAFTA nominated hit “Gentleman Jack” will return for a second season on Apr. 10 on BBC One and iPlayer. The BBC has released a trailer and images featuring Suranne Jones, Sophie Rundle and Lydia Leonard in character as Anne Lister, Ann Walker and Mariana Lawton.
The eight-part series is a Lookout Point production for the BBC, co-produced with HBO.
The new season is set in Yorkshire, 1834. Sally Wainwright’s “Gentleman Jack” is almost back for Season 2 on HBO.
The Suranne Jones-starring show about real-life historical figure Anne Lister — who lived in Yorkshire in the 1800s, and who was known not only for defying societal stereotypes about women and business, style of dress, and all manner of things, and who kept a coded diary of her romances with women — returns next month, HBO confirmed Thursday. The network also dropped a brand new teaser.
In the video clip, someone calls Anne “gentleman Jack” to her back, a nickname she got for her style of dress, prompting a shocked face from Jones.
It also hints at the drama ahead across its eight episode second season as Anne and her wife, the wealthy Ann Walker (they said vows together at home), as they try to carry out their relationship in private, but with society trying to invade their business.

‘Gentleman Jack’: HBO & BBC Renew Sally Wainwright’s Suranne Jones-Fronted Period Drama For Season 2
HBO and BBC period drama Gentleman Jack has been handed a second season. Sally Wainwright’s Suranne Jones-fronted series will return for another eight-part run.
It comes as the Lookout Point-produce drama is still on the air. The series debuted on HBO on April 22 in its new Monday night slot and on the BBC on May 19. It became the BBC’s biggest new drama launch of the year with an average overnight audience of 5.1 million viewers.
Written by Happy Valley creator Wainwright, it tells the story of Anne Lister, played by Jones, who had a passion for life and a mind for business, and bucked society’s expectations at every turn.
Gentleman Jack focuses on Regency landowner Lister in the period drama, which is set in 1832 Halifax, West Yorkshire. She is determined to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall, by reopening the coal mines and marrying well.

Both HBO and BBC are no strangers to historical dramas, but it certainly seems like “Gentleman Jack” features a unique protagonist for either network. Based on her extensive personal writings, 19th century landowner and noted social rebel Anne Lister gets a series of her own, set to debut stateside next month. Suranne Jones plays the black-clad businesswoman, who not only sought to develop industrial projects on her family’s land, but made her intentions known to marry a wife in the process. The series combines a central romance between Lister and her intended, Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle), and Lister’s attempts to reinvigorate the coal-mining efforts on her family property at Shibden Hall.
The series comes from TV powerhouse Sally Wainwright, who also wrote and created the British police drama “Happy Valley,” which eventually came under the Netflix Originals banner after first premiering on BBC One. Wainwright also helped to...

Fred Zinnemann’s counter-assassination thriller remains topflight filmmaking, torn from reality and shot through with an unsentimental dose of political realism. Edward Fox’s implacable killer outwits the combined resources of an entire nation as he stalks his prey, and when bad luck forces him to improvise, he racks up more victims on his kill list. Step aside Bond, Bourne and Marvel — the original Jackal is the man to beat.

The year is 1962. Aggrieved when Algeria is granted independence by President Charles de Gaulle, the militant underground alliance known as the Organisation Armée Secrète botches an attempt to assassinate him. Within months many of the conspirators, including their top man, have been captured and executed. The remaining Oas leaders, bereft of funds, take refuge in Austria and warily decide to contract an outside professional to do the job for them. They settle on a British assassin (Edward Fox), who chooses to be identified as Jackal. The Oas orchestrate several bank robberies to cover his exorbitant fee of half a million dollars whilst the mechanics of the plotting are left entirely to Jackal's discretion. After capturing and interrogating another alliance member, the French authorities learn of Jackal's existence and, suspecting another attempt on de Gaulle's life may be imminent, they set their best man – Deputy Commissioner Claude Lebel (Michel Lonsdale) – on his tail.

One of the best international thrillers ever has almost become an obscurity, for reasons unknown – this Blu-ray comes from Australia. Edward Fox’s wily assassin for hire goes up against the combined police and security establishments of three nations as he sets up the killing of a head of state – France’s president Charles de Gaulle. The terrific cast features Michel Lonsdale, Delphine Seyrig and Cyril Cusack; director Fred Zinnemann’s excellent direction reaches a high pitch of tension – even though the outcome is known from the start.

We're celebrating 50 brilliant UK independent bookshops. If your favourite is missing, please add it to the list below...
In Neil Gaiman’s preface to Shelf Life: Fantastic Stories Celebrating Bookstores, he describes four bookshops from his childhood. One was a travelling school shop, one a local store staffed by a helpful hippy where he’d pick up 25p Tom Disch novels, another was a bus ride away and owned by a Grinch who’d glower at schoolchildren customers, and the last was a now-defunct Soho sci-fi and fantasy treasure trove. Four individual shops run by booksellers with distinct personalities and idiosyncratic tastes. All of which made Gaiman what he is.
That’s the joy of independent bookshops. Their personalities shape those of the people who visit them. They’re not homogenous. Their stock tends to reflect their passions rather than the year's best-performing unit-shifters. And their...

Glenda Jackson: Actress and former Labour MP. Two-time Oscar winner and former Labour MP Glenda Jackson returns to acting Two-time Best Actress Academy Award winner Glenda Jackson set aside her acting career after becoming a Labour Party MP in 1992. Four years ago, Jackson, who represented the Greater London constituency of Hampstead and Highgate, announced that she would stand down the 2015 general election – which, somewhat controversially, was won by right-wing prime minister David Cameron's Conservative party.[1] The silver lining: following a two-decade-plus break, Glenda Jackson is returning to acting. Now, Jackson isn't – for the time being – returning to acting in front of the camera. The 79-year-old is to be featured in the Radio 4 series Emile Zola: Blood, Sex and Money, described on their website as a “mash-up” adaptation of 20 Emile Zola novels collectively known as "Les Rougon-Macquart."[2] Part 1 of the three-part Radio 4 series will be broadcast daily during an...

'Nicholas and Alexandra': Movie starred Michael Jayston and Janet Suzman 'Nicholas and Alexandra' movie review: Opulent 1971 spectacle lacks emotional core Nicholas and Alexandra is surely one of the most sumptuous film productions ever made. The elaborate sets and costumes, Richard Rodney Bennett's lush musical score, and frequent David Lean collaborator Freddie Young's richly textured cinematography provide the perfect period atmosphere for this historical epic. Missing, however, is a screenplay that offers dialogue instead of speeches, and a directorial hand that brings out emotional truth instead of soapy melodrama. Nicholas and Alexandra begins when, after several unsuccessful attempts, Tsar Nicholas II (Michael Jayston) finally becomes the father of a boy. Shortly thereafter, he and his wife, the German-born Empress Alexandra (Janet Suzman), have their happiness crushed when they discover that their infant son is a hemophiliac. In addition to his familial turmoil, the Tsar must also deal with popular...

The 37-year-old TV producer added that grumpy Stan Carter (Timothy West) is based on his grandfather while Mick and Linda's sons Lee (Danny-Boy Hatchard) and Johnny (Sam Strike) are him and his brother. John Sergeant is to host a new ITV travel series.
Barging About Britain will be an eight-part series with Sergeant journeying through the UK's most iconic waterways in a canal boat.
The former political broadcaster will travel through Somerset and the Hebrides, while discovering the history of eight different routes.
ITV commissioning editor Andrew O'Connell said: "There's nothing half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats and what better way to do it than on an English narrowboat."
Ian Lamarra from production company Alaska TV added: "John has huge warmth, massive broad appeal and is enthusiastic about the subject. He's even sleeping on the barge. Shooting in the summer months is a real treat, the end result will look amazing and showcase the best of the British Isles."
Timothy West and Prunella Scales recently featured in Channel 4's Great Canal Journeys, travelling through narrowboat routes in England and France.

Timothy West's real-life injury has been written into 'EastEnders'. The 79-year-old actor's broken ankle inspired soap bosses to concoct a storyline for his cantankerous alter-ego Stan Carter, which will see tensions grow when his injury forces him to move into the Queen Vic with his landlord son Mick, played by Danny Dyer. He told The Sun newspaper: ''It was because of my own real injury, a broken ankle. When I did that, 'EastEnders' wrote in an accident for Stan. ''Having your ankle pinned means you spend quite a lot of time in plaster.'' The stage star is enjoying his new role on the BBC...

In Den Of Geek's first ever Eastenders review, Danny Dyer delves into a mysterious encounter...
This review contains spoilers.
As the last, elegiac whistle of title music faded away, the theme of this episode, reflection, was quickly established. Director John Howlett’s camera panned up an ablutions-performing Danny Dyer through a glass shower panel, his features - like his troubled soul - warped and rippling, while in the distance a police siren wailed its solitary song. Dyer confronted his bruised reflection in the bathroom mirror with questioning, narrowed eyes. “I’m in untold torment”, they seemed to say, “and no mistake”.
After an ebullient family breakfast in which Shirley asserted her position as Carter family matriarch by symbolically insulting her sister’s eggs, Dyer carried his burden first to the dart board, then to the the car lot.

Apparently, even the White House wasn’t enough. Hot off his acclaimed turn as dastardly politician Frank Underwood on the second season of Netflix’s hit drama House of Cards, Kevin Spacey has signed on to play former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in a biopic titled Captain of the Gate.
The biopic, which hails from Sierra/Affinity (Oculus, the upcoming Kill the Messenger), will focus on Churchill’s rise to power as he heroically took a stand against Parliament in order to protect England from Adolf Hitler’s powerful Third Reich. The script was penned by Ben Kaplan, who recently worked on the History Channel’s documentary Reagan. Kaplan also wrote episodes of historical documentary series Vietnam in HD and WWII in HD, both also for the History Channel, but Captain of the Gate will mark his feature debut.
Churchill has understandably been the subject of countless biopics, including...
