Belgian director Joachim Lafosse is done being silent.

Created by Thierry Faber and directed by Christophe Wagner, the hit Luxembourg series has just been acquired by Netflix, marking a first for the Grand Duchy. Claude Waringo of Samsa Film has a lot to be excited about: the development of stories in the Luxembourg language and within a local context - a vocation that’s dear to the producer and his associates Jani Thiltges and Bernard Michaux - is arousing increasing levels of interest. Let’s not forget that in 1989, just as the company was launching activities, it was entrusted with the production of a fiction film which went on to acquire cult status: Schacko Klak by Paul Kieffer and Fränk Hoffmann, the first full-length film to be made in Luxembourg. The success enjoyed by this historical drama led to an unprecedented mobilisation of the industry and the professionalisation of its structures. Thirty or so years later, Samsa Film is.

Workshop to probe statistics behind the debate on women in film.
The European Audiovisual Observatory is to run an event looking at the place of women in today’s film industry, entitled “Girls Just Wanna Have Film”, during the Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25).
“We know this is a hot topic but it’s clear that any discussion on this subject needs to be backed up by reliable facts and figures. It’s the Observatory’s role to provide these and that’s what we come to Cannes to do,” Eao’s executive director Susanne Nikoltchev told ScreenDaily.
“We made a study on female directors at the request of our Advisory Committee and we’d like to make this data available to add to the discussion.”
News of the conference comes amid the now traditional Cannes debate on the number of women in Official Selection as well as the parallel sections.

The St Petersburg-based P.O.V. Development Fund has been launched with a budget of $130,000 (€100,000) to encourage international co-productions with Russian producers attached as lead or delegate producers.

Bochum, Germany -- "The White Ribbon," Michael Haneke's powerful depiction of a German village on the eve of World War I, conquered the 2009 European Film Awards, beating out Oscar champ "Slumdog Millionaire" to win the top trophies in the best film and director categories.
"I'm stunned. I'm overwhelmed," Haneke said as he hoisted his best film trophy, adding that the film was "truly an European production" as it featured funding and production teams from four countries -- Germany, Austria, France and Italy.
Haneke also won the European wcreenwriter nod for his disturbing script to "The White Ribbon," which traces the roots of fascism in the oppressive religious and civil society of Germany in 1913.
"Slumdog Millionaire" didn't go away empty-handed, picking up the Efa's people choice award as well as the European cinematographer prize for cameraman Anthony Dod Mantle, who was also honored for his lensing of Lars von Trier's shocker "Antichrist.

Through her Entre Chein et Loup production house in Belgium Elbaum has co-produced European art house fare ranging from Marina de Van's psychodrama "Don't Look Back" starring Sophie Marceau and Monica Bellucci to the Pierre Paul Renders' comedy "Mr. Average" (2006) to the period drama "Saint-Cyr" (2000) featuring Isabelle Huppert. From his base in Luxembourg, Thiltges and his Samsa Film operation have delivered some 40 features, among them Ben Sombogaart's Oscar-nominee "Twin Sisters" (2002) and action comedy "Jcvd" starring Mr. Muscles from Brussels himself, Jean-Claude Van Damme.
