Shortly after denying Nelson Peltz a seat on the Disney board, the House of Mouse is sharing first looks at two of their upcoming films, Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King. The Hollywood Handle was the first to share the Mufasa image, which Disney debuted as part of the studio’s 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders. The picture for Mufasa: The Lion King depicts a young Mufasa standing at the edge of a cliff while staring out at a desaturated Pride Land. The Barry Jenkins-directed sequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 live-action hybrid focuses on Simba, having become king of the Pride Lands, and is determined for his cub to follow in his paw prints while the origins of his late father Mufasa are explored.

Director Jon Favreau has assembled quite an incredible cast of actors for Disney's realistic CGI animated remake of The Lion King. Most of the actors on the list we've already known about, but the one big confirmation is that Beyonce will officially be providing the voice of Nala. Here's the synopsis that was released:
From Disney Live Action, director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure...

Walt Disney was a canny marketer, cycling his films in and out of release, on and off television, through the years, recognizing it would appear fresh to younger viewers and fondly recalled by those at later stages in their lives. That practice has continued into the world of home video with the films on rotation and we’re now getting The Lion King: The Circle of Life Edition after having received Masterpiece Collection, Platinum Edition and Diamond Edition. The new edition is already available as Digital HD and hits disc today.
An interesting thing to consider about the story itself is that Simba is being trained by his father to one day succeed him as King. This connection with a parent and this effort towards being prepared to rule is entirely absent from any of the Disney Princess films.

Image Source: Getty / C Flanigan Garth Brooks had a lot to celebrate during his concert at the La Forum on Saturday night; first, he welcomed his newly 21-year-old daughter Allie to the stage as his new backup singer and the two performed a few of his iconic hits together before the country singer led the crowd in a rendition of "Happy Birthday" for her. If that wasn't exciting enough, Allie's boyfriend, Jonathan Roberts, was waiting in the wings to ask her a very important question as she exited the stage. In a video posted to Facebook, you can see Jonathan getting down on one knee and asking Allie to marry him - meanwhile, Garth was still on stage singing "She's Every Woman." Allie is the youngest daughter of Garth and his first wife, songwriter Sandy Mahl.

Though reaction to the announcement of a live-action remake of Disney’s The Lion King has been somewhat mixed, the studio is forging ahead with the project. Having set Jon Favreau to direct the film, screenwriter Jeff Nathanson (Tower Heist, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) has now been hired to tackle the adaptation.
Disney are clearly seeking to capitalise on the rapturous reception The Jungle Book received earlier this year. Filmmaker Jon Favreau took the classic Disney film and reinvigorated it by returning to certain elements of the source material – being Rudyard Kipling’s book. He then delivered a CGI-live action hybrid movie that succeeded on every level. With The Lion King, however, there is no specific source material to incorporate, beyond the original film, unless writer Jeff Nathanson brings additional elements of Shakespeare’s Hamlet into the story – of which the 1994 film featured narrative aspects.

Game of Thrones has certainly become a cottage industry, spewing forth all manner of collectible and universe expansion, all attempting to profit while filling the void as everyone awaits the sixth volume from writer George R.R. Martin. The next such offerings come from HBO Home Entertainment as they release the steelbook editions of seasons three and four on June 7.
Like the first two seasons, already available, these offer up a few bonuses for collectors or audiophiles. First, the Blu-ray sets are entirely the same as the already available sets with the one difference being that they have all been remastered to offer up Dolby Atmos, the immersive sound system. While PR surrounding the release says you need specific Atmos-enabled Av receivers, other models do access the new soundtracks to full effect (or so the experts tells me).

Animation has come a long way since The Lion King seemed so state-of-the-art. The Lion King was the second-highest grossing film of 1994, and at the time the record-holder for most successful animated feature ever released (before Pixar). Everything about Disney’s 32nd animated feature seemed embellished with epic, visual weight. I’ll take it for granted that most people know the story of Simba and his journey to become ruler of The Pride Lands. Eschewing fairy tales, Disney’s usual bread and butter for cartoon musicals, The Lion King was based on an original script by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and Linda Woolverton. The plot, derived from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, classical mythology, and African folk tales, was heavier , darker, and more adult than most Disney stories. Then there were those eye-popping cinematic pans across the African plains and the computer-enhanced sequence featuring the stampeding wildebeest which was nothing short of breathtaking.

Chicago – While we may quibble over a bit of grain or some undefined line detail, the dirty secret of most Blu-ray reviewers is that a wide majority of audiences cannot discern the difference between most HD releases. The fact is that almost all of them look pretty damn good. Sadly, there are exceptions to the rule and Disney’s release for “James and the Giant Peach” is one such exception.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0
What’s the opposite of remastering? “Demastering”? What ever it is, that’s what’s happened to “James and the Giant Peach,” which looks far-from-hd in its recent Blu-ray release. Rarely do I feel the need to seriously tinker with the video settings on my player and television but I did just that trying to get the picture just right for Henry Selick’s underrated adaptation of the Roald Dahl hit. No matter what I did, the grain...
