Exclusive: Dark Horse Comics today unveiled Black Solstice, a new graphic novel written by Oscar winners Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe, which it will publish next December.
The comic illustrated by Aremo Massa picks up following a winter solstice which saw the world transform when every Black person in America gained superpowers—powers that gave an unthinkable amount of hope, but then disappeared the following morning. Now, with only three days before the next winter solstice, the entire nation is holding its breath, waiting to see if the powers will return.
But not everyone’s been just waiting. Kesa, Quentin, and Deja—the Wallace siblings—have been planning the biggest heist in history, something that would change everything for Black people. And they are ready. All they need are those powers to kick in for 24 more hours.

Last year, Dark Horse Comics adapted William Gibson's unproduced Alien 3 screenplay as a five-issue comic book series, and now they're teaming up with 20th Century Fox to give the same treatment to Dan O’Bannon's original Alien screenplay, which, as diehard Alien fans know, is different from the version that came to life on the big screen in 1979.
Written by Cristiano Seixas and based on O’Bannon's original screenplay for Alien (which also included story ideas that O’Bannon worked on with Ronald Shusett), Alien: The Original Screenplay will be a five-issue series featuring artist Guilherme Balbi and colorist Candice Han.
Originally known under titles such as Memory and Star Beast, the screenplay for Alien would go on to have many different drafts before filming began, changing and reconfiguring certain storylines from O’Bannon's initial version. Last year, Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes released a fan trailer for a screen adaption of ElfQuest, the long-running fantasy comic book by Wendy and Richard Pini. The trailer was extremely well received, receiving loads of press and a panel at Comic-Con. Now, the creative pair appears ready to turn their trailer into a feature-length reality. Thorpe and Rhodes have acquired the production rights to ElfQuest, which will allow the duo to create an official adaptation of ElfQuest for film or TV distribution. The rights to the franchise were previously held by Warner Brothers, but the major studio balked at the chance to turn the cult hit into a feature film. When their hold on the rights expired, Thorpe and Rhodes were quick to snatch them up, with the Pinis right behind them in full support. “Paula Rhodes and Stephanie Thorpe more than proved themselves to us with their award-winning ElfQuest : A Fan Imagining,...

Elfquest has had a long and tortuous road to the big screen, but things may finally be looking up. Warner Bros. rights lapsed earlier this year, but now Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes have acquired the rights to the 35 year old comic book series. Thorpe and Rhodes made the announcement at Afm, and have crashed onto the scene with their short live action production ElfQuest: A Fan Imagining, which can be found on Youtube or below.
The series, by Wendy and Richard Pini, follows a tribe of elves on the World of Two Moons, who are driven from their forests by humans and stumble upon…more elves.
Wendy Pini had the following to say about Thorpe and Rhodes’: “With their deep love and understanding of the property, they represent a new direction for ‘ElfQuest,’…New creative energy and new connections in the larger media.”

Warner Bros. has been trying to develop an adaptation of the 70s comic book series ElfQuest, but earlier this year, the project fell apart. Created by Richard and Wendy Pini in 1978, the series followed a tribe of elves on the distant World of Two Moons who find themselves driven from their forest by humans and then discover something they didn't know existed: other elves. Sounds like this plot could easily be applied to an Avatar storyline. Anyway, Variety reports Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes, a duo who crafted a live-action short production as "a fan imagining" of a potential film, have purchased the rights to the series. Here's the ElfQuest short Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes created that helped them land the rights: The plan is to turn ElfQuest into an indie feature film, but since this news was announced at the American Film Market, this could easily just stay...

After Warner Bros. decided to put the kibosh on the “ElfQuest” movie they’ve been developing for years, it seemed like “ElfQuest” fans would never get to see their elves, well, questing on the big screen. After all, it’s hard to make a movie like “ElfQuest” without the full backing of a major Hollywood studio. Or at least, it would be hard to make a decent looking movie, anyway. But someone’s going to give it a shot anyways, it appears. Those two “someones” are Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes, who recently announced at the American Film Market that they have successfully acquired movie rights to the comic book property from its creators, Wendy and Richard Pini. According to Wendy Pini, it was a no-brainer: With their deep love and understanding of the property, they represent a new direction for ‘ElfQuest.’ New creative energy and new connections in the larger media.

The duo made the announcement today at the American Film Market. For years now, a feature film adaptation of the hot fantasy property ElfQuest has been floating around in limbo. Now, Variety reports that producers Stephanie Thorpe (Shelf Life) and Paula Rhodes (A Good Knight’s Quest) have secured the film rights to the cult fantasy comic book.
Created in 1978 by Wendy and Richard Pini, ElfQuest tells the story of Cutter, his tribe the Wolfriders, and their quest to find and unite the elves of the land against the threat of humans, trolls, and other creatures. The series has had a long comic book publication history, once upon a time with Marvel Comics, and more recently with DC Comics.
ElfQuest co-creator Wendy Pini commented on the acquisition:
With their deep love and understanding of the property, they represent a new direction for ElfQuest…new creative energy and new connections in the larger media.

The producers of the the fan film Elfquest: A Fan Imagining, Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes, have acquired the rights to the comic series ElfQuest from Wendy and Richard Pini. The plan is to bring the story to life on the big screen.
Warner Bros. most recently held the rights to ElfQuest, but did nothing with it, and they let the rights lapse earlier this year. So it was snatched up by someone who cares. Wendy Pini had this to say in a statement about Thorpe and Rhodes developing the series,
With their deep love and understanding of the property, they represent a new direction for ElfQuest...new creative energy and new connections in the larger media.
The comic was launched in 1978 and the story follows a tribe of elves on the distant World of Two Moons who find themselves driven from their forest by humans and then discover other elves,...

You have probably seen Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes' Elfquest: A Fan Imagining short already, and now it seems the duo's love and dedication to the franchise has paid off, as Variety report that they've acquired the movie rights to the 35-year old comic book series by Wendy and Richard Pini. "With their deep love and understanding of the property, they represent a new direction for ElfQuest...new creative energy and new connections in the larger media." said Wendy Pini of the acquisition. Of course this is only the first step in what will likely be a long road to seeing Cutter, Skywise and co. up on the big screen. Warner Bros. had previously attempted to get an Elfquest movie into production until the rights lapsed earlier in the year. Update: Here are quotes from Thorpe and Rhodes from the official press release.. "We are thrilled to bring ElfQuest,...

The ElfQuest comic series has hit a series of rough patches in its journey to the big screen, but it seems that this time it might be getting there. Variety is reporting that producers Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes have acquired the film rights to the Wendy and Richard Pini comic series. Just a few years ago the film was in development at Warner Bros. Co-creator Wendy Pini said, "With their deep love and understanding of the property, they represent a new direction for ElfQuest...new creative energy and new connections in the larger media." The producing pair made a short film adaptation of the property to pitch their take on the film which you can see below. The original series was created in 1978 and is described as being about "Cutter,...

In an interview promoting Thanks For Sharing, his sex addiction movie, Mark Ruffalo provides an update on Ryan Murphy's The Normal Heart, which was supposed to have shot over the summer. "I'm expecting that to go in the spring; we couldn't do it in the summer. Larry Kramer and Ryan have been working on this new draft, which is really good, and they're able to do a lot more than even the play was able to do as far as sexuality and the real trials and tribulations of living with people in that time with AIDS and caring for them. I think it could be really powerful."

Most news coverage of San Diego Comic-Con is saturated with celebrity sightings and Hollywood movies. Magazines report on ridiculous cosplay, digital spectacle, and the publicity tidal wave of Hall H. But on the floor, the experience is different. There are stories on every corner that have nothing to do with film promotion; there are passions that bypass traditional t-shirt bargains and get straight to the meat of what comics are about; there are people who wait all year before finally getting the chance to have a serious discussion about Swamp Thing. This blog is about them. Posted in reverse chronological order (most recent post is at the top of the page).

There has been a lot of buzz lately about creators walking away from cushy contracts at Marvel and DC to strike out on their own, the most recent being Paolo Rivera whose eloquent blog post on the subject offers wonderful insight to his personal motivation. The reaction from fans and comic related news media would make you think that these creators are venturing to the dark side of the moon on the first experimental space vessel not built and commandeered by Nasa. This reaction mystifies me because it shows a disregard of the history of comics and the vibrant atmosphere of the current comics marketplace. People that are surprised that top rated talent are leaving the Big Two should rather be asking, “why has it taken so long?” The pros and cons of working for corporate comic companies have been established for decades. Sure, you get to work on characters you know and love,...

As several projects are being picked up in wake of Sundance viewings, others are not experiencing the same kind of luck. /Film has some upsetting news for comic book and film fans alike: David Fincher-produced, Jeff Fowler and Tim Miller-directed The Goon, as well as Rawson Thurber‘s Elfquest, are ceasing to exist. As we’ve seen with the recent Akira adaptation, chances are they could see the light of day in upcoming months — but it doesn’t look good right now.
The last time we heard about The Goon was almost a year ago, when Fincher shed light on the project’s money troubles. Progress for the adaptation started back in 2008, when Fincher optioned the rights for the comic from creator Eric Powell, with the hope of making a CG animated picture with Blur Studio. Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown signed on to voice various characters in...

The long-gestating adaptation of the cult comic "Elfquest", which has been in development at Warners for four years, looks to have been dumped.
Rawson Marshall Thurber was previously attached to direct the story of a tribe of elves trying to find others of their kind while avoiding humans and trolls. Comic co-creator Wendy Pini gave the following statement on the title's Facebook page:
"After close to four years of suspense - and longer than four years of your much-appreciated interest and support - the word has come down from Warner Bros. And the word is "no." Their simple explanation is that they don't want to compete with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. This was a possibility, among several, that we were prepared for. It is a relief, at last, to know."
Meanwhile another project that began life back in 2008, a CG animated adaptation of Eric Powell's "The Goon" comic which David Fincher optioned,...

[1] It's a sad day for comic book fans, as we get updates that suggest two long-gestating adaptations, David Fincher's The Goon and Rawson Thurber's Elfquest, are no longer happening. Sure, they could get revived somewhere down the line -- crazier things have happened -- but if I were you, I wouldn't hold my breath. Hit the jump for updates. Back in 2008, Fincher optioned [2] the movie rights to Eric Powell's comic book The Goon (not to be confused with Jay Baruchel's hockey movie Goon) with the intention of creating a CG animated film with Blur Studio. Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown came on board [3] to voice the leads in 2009, we got some intriguing early looks at images [4] and [5] footage [6] from the movie [7], and then... nothing. Fincher offered a small update [8] last month, telling SuperHeroHype that people have been working on The Goon but that the budget was still being worked out.

I barely remember writing about a possible “ElfQuest” movie gestating within the hills of Hollywoodland. Turns out, there’s a reason for that. It was way back in 2008 (you know, the dark, dark days of the Interwebs) that Warner Bros. originally announced they were working on an “ElfQuest” movie. Apparently the film has been in development since … but not anymore. The “ElfQuest” movie is dead. D-e-d. Dead. And you can thank Peter Jackson and his hobbits for it. Or, to be more precise, his upcoming two “Hobbit” movies, the first of which is due out this Christmas. The word of the movie’s cancellation comes courtesy of Wendy Pini, one of the creators of the comic book series (along with her husband Richard Pini) on Facebook (via Bleeding Cool): After close to four years of suspense – and longer than four years of your much-appreciated interest and support – the word...

Warner Bros. has decided to pull the plug on the adaptation of the comic book series "Elfquest" Wendy Pini, co-creator of the comics along with Richard Pini, says that the upcoming box office juggernaut of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" is the reason why. Pini's official "Elfquest" Facebook page says that the studio has bowed out of the potentially pricey adaptation in order to avoid competition with Peter Jackson's two-part "Lord of the Rings" followup. "After close to four years of suspense, and no longer than four years of your much-appreciated interest and support, the word has come down from Warner...

Warner Bros. first announced plans for an Elfquest movie in 2008, and nothing has happened since then. The film was to be based on Wendy and Richard Pini's comics, which have been published since the '70s. We finally have some word on that thanks to Blastr, who say that Peter Jackson's The Hobbit is to blame.
The studio reportedly feels that "three films with elves is one too many, and so they pulled the plug on Elfquest." That is what Wendy Pini had to say on the official Elfquest Facebook Page: After close to four years of suspense—and longer than four years of your much-appreciated interest and support—the word has come down from Warner Bros. And the word is 'no.' Their simple explanation is that they don't want to compete with The Hobbit. This was a possibility, among several, that we were prepared for. It is a relief,...

In October 2006-2010, five annual Wonder Woman Day events raised over $110,000 for Domestic Violence programs in Portland, Oregon and Flemington, NJ. The five-year combination of auctions of over 1,100 original art pieces, plus collectibles, autograph signings, and photo opportunities garnered spectacular turnouts and four Portland Mayoral Proclamations.
This year, the event will take on a new name and an expanded mission! On October 30, 2011, the new Women of Wonder Day — again as a part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month — will take place, returning to Excalibur Books in Portland, Oregon, and Comic Fusion in Flemington, New Jersey, as well as at Heroes and Fantasies in San Antonio, Texas.
This year’s contributions for auction include not only artwork featuring heroines from the world of comics — Wonder Woman, She-Hulk, Storm, Michonne from The Walking Dead, Leetah from ElfQuest — but also from the world of media as well, including Lisbeth Salander, Buffy the Vampire Slayer,...

Here's another opportunity for a big time movie studio to do the right thing and let an animated creation remain in its original form. The Hollywood Reporter says Warner Bros. will adapt the comic series Elfquest, and that Rawson Thurber will write, direct, and produce it.
Elfquest began 30 years ago as a self-published comic by Richard and Wendy Pini. It's one of the few titles to have been released by both Marvel and DC at various points in its journey. The central characters were members of the Wolfriders, an elf tribe that fought with humans and trolls on some distant but similar planet. Also, they fought accident attorneys, who are the enemies of everyone.
That's not true. Well, accident attorneys are the enemy; Wolfriders didn't fight them, though.
Now, fans of the series will want to know who this Rawson Thurber character is. I had that same thought, the same Elfquestion,...
