When we started this project 5 years ago, I worked hard with this incredible cast and crew to craft a journey that we all hoped would be satisfying.”

Following the ambitious adventure saga “The Three Musketeers,” Pathé and Chapter 2 are back at work on another epic franchise, this time in English with a plot shedding light on the origins of the Grimaldi dynasty and their conquest of Monaco in the late 13th century. While they’re lesser known than the U.K.’s Windsors, the Grimaldi family has ruled Monaco for eight centuries and as such remains Europe’s longest-ruling royal family.
Martha Hillier is attached to write the first installment of “Monaco,” which is titled “Part I — The Rock.” Astrea Films is producing the film with Chapter 2, a Mediawan Company, and Pathé. Astrea is headed by Andrea, Pierre and Beatrice Casiraghi, who have ties to the Grimaldi family, while Dimitri Rassam is also part of the Monegasque princely family through his marriage with Charlotte Casiraghi. Morgan O’Sullivan and Osp’s Liz Gill are attached to executive produce.

“Vikings: Valhalla” returns with its second season Jan. 12, but Variety has the exclusive first look at the “Vikings” prequel’s Season 2 trailer to tide fans over for another month.
Based on the History Channel series “Vikings” created by Michael Hirst, “Vikings: Valhalla” is set over a thousand years ago in the early 11th century and chronicles the heroic adventures of some of the most famous Vikings who ever lived — the legendary explorer Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett), his fiery and headstrong sister Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gustavsson) and the ambitious Nordic prince Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter).
The second season, which consists of eight episodes running 49 minutes each, finds our heroes shortly after the tragic fall of Kattegat; an event that has shattered their dreams and altered their destinies, per Netflix’s official description. Finding themselves suddenly fugitives in Scandinavia they are forced to test their ambitions and courage in worlds beyond the fjords of Kattegat.

“Vikings: Valhalla” showrunner and creator Jeb Stuart has fathered four kids, and he’s about to pop out his fifth — in the form of the Netflix sequel series.
“I’m ready to have this baby,” Stuart says. “There’s so much anticipation, especially when you’ve come to really love a project, and love the group of people you work with and they all care about it and have put so much into it. I’m so excited.”
Stuart, whose filmography as a screenwriter includes “Die Hard” and “The Fugitive,” wound up developing the highly anticipated streaming sequel to Michael Hirst’s celebrated historical drama “Vikings” — which takes place a century after its predecessor, and packs in more action and adventure without sparing accuracy — because of another show he made for Netflix.

On paper, a Vikings spin-off certainly seems like a no-brainer. The original series ran for six seasons and garnered legions of fans thanks to its adventurous storytelling, morally gray characters, cinematic action sequences, and willingness to take risks. The simplest choice would have been to create essentially a carbon copy of the original, leaning into its themes of legacy and explicitly tying the new series to its parent program.
Instead, Netflix has gone in a different direction, setting Vikings: Valhalla 125 years after the original, in a world where names like Ragnar and Lagertha are remembered as mythic figures more than real people who loved and struggled and triumphed.

Netflix has released a teaser for “Vikings: Valhalla,” a spinoff series of the original “Vikings” saga set to premiere Feb. 25 on the streaming platform.
“Vikings: Valhalla” takes place over a thousand years ago in the early 11th century, chronicling the adventures of famous Vikings in history — notably explorer Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett), his sister Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gustavsson) and Nordic prince Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter). In the series, tensions between Vikings and English royals violently climax and an epic journey across oceans (and bloody battlefields) begins.
“Vikings: Valhalla” takes place more than 100 years after the end of the “Vikings” series, which started close to the year 793 and explored several decades after. “Vikings” was loosely based on Norse and Icelandic sagas — focusing on Viking Ragnar Lothbrok and later the lives of Ragnar’s family. The original show ran for six seasons between 2013 and 2020 on the History Channel.

The final 10 episodes of Michael Hirst’s historical drama Vikings is moving from History to Amazon for its first window. The streamer has struck a deal to have the exclusive first run of the second half of the MGM drama’s final season. It will launch all 10 episodes on December 30 in the U.S., UK, Germany, Austria and Ireland.
The unusual arrangement means that History, which originally commissioned the show, will only have second-window rights to one of its key scripted shows. It comes as the A+E Networks channel is moving out of returnable scripted series and focusing on limited miniseries.
The move also comes as Netflix is in production with its Vikings spinoff Vikings: Valhalla, which is currently in production in Ireland.

Vikings: Valhalla, the Netflix sequel to the History drama, has restarted production in Ireland after shooting was suspended due to a number of positive Covid-19 tests.
Deadline understands that shooting at Ashford Studios resumed yesterday after it was suspended earlier this week. At the time a number of cast and crew were reported to have tested positive, however, it emerged that the production had received a number of false positive tests.
The series, which is produced by MGM, has had a rigorous testing process and tests cast and crew several times a week. Anyone who has a confirmed positive test must remain quarantined before returning to work and protocols and contact tracing has kept the show in production when they do.
The news first emerged in a report from The Irish Times.

The High Court in Ireland heard this week that a German film company may seek an injunction over plans to make Vikings: Valhalla, Netflix’s recently revealed sequel to hit series Vikings.
Lawyers for Berlin-based W2 Filmproduktion said on Thursday that W2 may seek an injunction as part of its ongoing action against Vikings producers Morgan O’Sullivan and James Flynn of Octagon Films, which is also a producer on the spin-off series.
W2 has alleged the producers have diverted around €40M out of Octagon, of which they are shareholders. The case, which began in 2016, returned to court this week. O’Sullivan and Flynn strongly deny W2’s allegations.

W2 has alleged the producers have diverted around €40M out of Octagon, of which they are shareholders. The case, which began in 2016, returned to court this week. O’Sullivan and Flynn strongly deny W2’s allegations.

The saga of Vikings made popular on the History Channel will continue in Valhalla, a Netflix offshoot from the original creator.
It should be no surprise given the popularity of History's flagship scripted series Vikings, here on this site and elsewhere, that series creator Michael Hirst has decided to continue the epic tale of the conquerors of the West in an offshoot entitled Vikings: Valhalla, according to news from TVLine. However, this sequel of sorts will be taking place on Netflix rather than the History Channel where Vikings is set to air the first half of its sixth and final season on December 4th.
Valhalla will follow the exploits of one of the most well-known names in Viking lore: Leif Erikson. Taking place a century after the storyline of its predecessor, the spinoff also features historical figures such as Freydis, Harald Harada, and William the Conqueror.

The Vikings saga will continue on Netflix. The streamer has picked up Vikings: Valhalla, a sequel to the hit series that is heading into its sixth and final season on History. I hear Netflix has ordered 24 episodes of the new series from Vikings creator Michael Hirst and studio MGM Television, which continues the storytelling of the original.
Written and executive produced by feature writer Jeb Stuart, Vikings: Valhalla begins 100 years after the original series concludes and dramatizes the adventures of the most famous Vikings who ever lived: Leif Erikson, Freydis, Harald Harada and the Norman King William the Conqueror (also a Viking descendant). These men and women will blaze new paths as they fight for survival in an ever-changing and evolving Europe. This is the explosive next chapter of the Vikings legend.
Stuart executive produces with Vikings executive producers Hirst and Morgan O’Sullivan for MGM Television.
