Gold statuettes may be the Oscars’ ultimate status symbol, but what of the envelopes that reveal the big winners? Three sets of cards, designed by Marc Friedland since 2011, are produced for each category — two of which are taken to the venue. Winners are allowed to keep their cards and envelopes. Those that are left behind, as well as extras, are recycled. But Friedland’s envelopes are meant to be keepsakes.
Catherine Zeta-Jones shared that she keeps her winning envelope for Chicago on the mantel in her home office, framed next to her statuette. Francis Ford Coppola says his winning envelopes and statues are on display at his Sonoma County winery. And Steven Spielberg keeps his three winning envelopes framed in his Amblin Entertainment office. Christopher Lord and Phil Miller gifted their envelope for 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to their publicist, Rachael Reiss.

In the wake of the dreadful “Madame Web” flop, the central question everyone seems to be asking themselves when it comes to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (Ssmu) is, what the hell is going on over there at that studio? While Sony’s superhero movies have flourished when they are Marvel co-productions, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” grossing almost $2 billion during the 2021 pandemic, and the “Spider-Verse” are big critical and commercial hits under Christopher Lord and Phil Miller, everything else appears to be a wash of late.

Cocaine Bear’s appeal starts – and, for many, ends – with its title. The movie promises one thing – a bear high on cocaine – and the only question is which approach director Elizabeth Banks will take: the one that treats it seriously and says “this is the scariest thing ever,” or the one that says “we’re making a movie called Cocaine Bear. Isn’t that crazy?”
Banks – supported by producers Christopher Lord and Phil Miller, who never met a crazy premise they could ignore – wisely takes the second route, leaning into the humor and carnage that collide under its absurd premise. And whether you like it or loathe it, you will probably walk away going: “yep; that’s exactly what I thought a movie called Cocaine Bear would be.”
Very loosely based on a true story from the 1980s, the film rockets to a start with an unhinged opening, as a...

With his first theatrically-released feature, director Chris McKay got to enter the studio sandbox and play with one of his all-time favorite characters: Batman. Having worked with Phil Lord and Christopher Lord on The Lego Movie—a mega-hit for Warner Bros. grossing nearly $470 million worldwide—McKay was a natural fit to helm The Lego Batman Movie (the first of two follow-up features, the other being The Lego Ninjago Movie), given his passion for the character, which…...

To help convey the “visceral realism” of “Dunkirk,” Christopher Nolan oversaw an intense soundscape covering land, sea, and air timelines for the legendary evacuation of more than 300,000 British and Allied troops under German bombardment. And for “Blade Runner 2049,” Denis Villeneuve spearheaded a musical blurring of sound and score that carried both emotional and atmospheric weight in driving the “more human than human” narrative.
Thus, in each case, sound works both overtly and subliminally to immerse us in war and dystopia, sharing equal importance with the stunning visuals provided by Hoyte van Hoytema and Roger Deakins, respectively. In the end, it makes no difference if we can’t distinguish sound from music, as they merge into a singular experience.

Feel that? There’s been a disturbance in the force… Earlier this week Director Colin Trevorrow parted ways with 2019’s Star Wars: Episode XI just months before the debut of Rian Johnson’s eagerly anticipated The Force Awakens follow up, The Last Jedi. According to Disney’s official statement, ‘differing visions’ were to blame for the apparent ‘mutual’ parting, however exactly what the nitty-gritty details were that caused the Director and studio to butt-heads remain a mystery… for now at least.
One thing we do know? Trevorrow’s departure marks the third time Disney and Lucasfilm have ditched a director whilst they’ve been deep in production. Fantastic Four’s Josh Trank was the first to go. The studio giant announced his departure from a (still) mysteriously unnamed Star Wars spin-off shortly after he dropped out of a Star Wars Celebration panel at the eleventh hour, despite clocking up a year of prep work.

A clip released from the recent I Am Heath Ledger documentary shows the late, great actor channeling his portrayal of the Joker for Christopher Nolan’s comic book opus, The Dark Knight.
Unveiled via JoBlo, the 9-minute promo features archived footage of Heath Ledger slipping into the iconic role, while there’s also an interview with Steve Alexander, Ledger’s former agent, about the time when he accepted that by-now famous gig as DC’s Clown Prince of Crime.
It’s a heartfelt and poignant tribute to the actor, who passed away almost a decade ago. Here, Alexander remembers the phone call he made to Heath Ledger about the vacant Joker role, and how he accepted it without a second’s hesitation.

Jon Watts is hardly the first up-and-coming filmmaker to be plucked from the indie film fold to helm a big-budget, high-stakes blockbuster. Nevertheless, the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” director was still surprised when Marvel came calling after his second film, “Cop Car,” screened at Sundance in 2015. Over the past few years, hiring first- and second-time directors to direct massive tentpole features has become standard procedure, from Colin Trevorrow to Josh Trank, Marc Webb to Gareth Edwards. When Watts got the call, he geeked out.
“I was so excited to just go to Marvel,” Watts said. “I actually still the visitor’s pass that they gave me to just get on the lot and everything. I wasn’t expecting any of this. It’s like when Bart Simpson goes to New York and he goes to the Mad Magazine headquarters.”

With a property like The Mummy, you could take it in a couple of different directions. You have the horror route: Universal and Hammer Studios both went this route in the 1930s and 50s, proving that the schlocky idea of a looming curse can be presented in a sophisticated and chilling manner. You have the adventure route: The 1999 Mummy remake gave us a fun, Indiana Jones character in a pulpy page-turning excursion. As Universal begins its journey to create their own cinematic universe like Marvel – currently titled Dark Universe – an attempt is made to go in both directions at that same time, without successfully capturing either experience very well.

The family of Chris Cornell are speaking out about the shocking death of the Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman, who was found dead at MGM Grand Detroit on Wednesday night. The medical examiner ruled that Cornell died of suicide by hanging, but the family believes he was not suicidal and instead hint that the side effects of his prescription drugs may have led to his death.
The Cornell family’s attorney Kirk Pasich said in a statement that the family is “disturbed” at inferences that Cornell knowingly and intentionally took his life and that Cornell told his wife that he had...

The family of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell issued a statement Friday questioning whether his death by hanging was intentional and if “substances contributed to his demise.” “Without the results of toxicology tests, we do not know what was going on with Chris,” Kirk Pasich, an attorney for the Cornell family said. “Chris, a recovering addict, had a prescription for Ativan and may have taken more Ativan than recommended dosages. The family believes that if Chris took his life, he did not know what he was doing, and that drugs or other substances may have affected his actions.” Pasich noted that some.

Does Warner Bros. finally have a hit on their hands as far as DC Extended Universe movies go? It certainly seems that way. While full reviews for Wonder Woman are still under embargo, and will be for a few more weeks, the social media reactions are starting to pour in and it’s almost unanimous: the critics absolutely love it. Though it’s far from a perfect film, it sounds like Patty Jenkins’ blockbuster is a huge hit and also the burgeoning cinematic universe’s best effort to date.
As you’ll see down below, most are in agreement that the Gal Gadot-led flick is a winner, with much praise being showered upon the film’s optimistic and hopeful tone, the chemistry between Gadot and co-star Chris Pine, the humor and more. All in all, it looks like it’s a definite winner and at the very least, it...

Given the right role, it’s distinctly possible that there’s nobody better in the business than Christian Bale. He can just own the screen and dominate a film. There’s a reason why he’s an Academy Award winner and slowly becoming someone that voters seem to look for a reason to cite. Oscar aside, he’s simply a throwback method style actor and that’s compelling for audience members. This week, he co-stars in The Promise, while also being rumored as the choice of filmmaker Adam McKay to play Dick Cheney in a biopic set for 2018. Even as a big time A-lister, the sky remains the limit for Bale. The film is a period piece, centered on a love triangle during the final days of the Ottoman Empire. Michael (Oscar Isaac), a rather brilliant medical student, is wooing the beautiful and highly sophisticated Ana (Charlotte Le Bon), but...

The supernatural crime thriller Cold Moon tells the story of Nathan Redfield (Josh Stewart), an arrogant man of great wealth who has either lost his mind or is being tormented by terrible forces beyond even the most paranoid of imaginings. In a sleepy Southern town, the Larkins have suffered a terrible tragedy, but the family is now about to face an even more grievous trial. "I don't know where they're coming from anymore", says Cillian Murphy of superhero movies, as he looks back at The Dark Knight Trilogy...
More than any genre, the superhero movie has dominated Hollywood blockbusters in the 21st century. 16 years since X-Men, we’re still getting X-sequels, as well as third-tier villains like most of the Suicide Squad dominating the summer box office. But like a good many people, Cillian Murphy appears to have some reservations about all that. Having appeared in all three installments of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy, Murphy is experienced with the caped and cowled set. But even after squaring off with Batman himself, he thinks the environment is changing around Hollywood.
“Have they exhausted every single comic book ever?” Murphy asked Vulture during an interview for his new movie Anthropoid. “I don’t know where they’re coming from anymore.”

It’s been a strange summer for movies, with a number of high profile flops and several highly anticipated releases failing to meet expectations. As a result, the arguments surrounding Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice feel like a thing of the past, especially as the Ultimate Edition helped to wash away the bad taste the theatrical version left in the mouths of many fans.
We’ve seen a lot of behind the scenes content from the set of the movie in recent weeks, but arguably one of the best sources has been photographer Clay Enos. A longtime collaborator of Zack Snyder’s, his work has set the tone for the DC Films Universe (he was responsible for our first look at Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman).
