If you didn’t Meet The Blacks in 2016, they’re back this weekend in Deon Taylor’s second horror-comedy installment.
The first film was a send-up of The Purge. This one – The House Next Door: Meet The Blacks 2 — goes gothic. Star Mike Epps returns as Carl Black, about to face off with a neighbor from hell, Dr. Mamuwalde (Katt Williams). He’s a pimp who may or may not be a vampire and Carl’s got to figure out what he’s up to in the middle of the night before it’s too late for him and his family.
“In 2016, I made this little movie that cost $900,000. We put it out there ourselves, independently, cut our own trailers, did our own marketing,” Taylor told Deadline. It made $9.1 million. His credits since include Fatale and Black and Blue, “but everywhere I would go, people would say, “Are you going...

Producer Oge Egbuonu’s directorial debut “(In)Visible Portraits” arrives having perhaps committed the first-feature error of wanting to say everything. Even so, the documentary’s emotional generosity and mindful elegance impress. A rumination on Black women in America, the film’s release was moved up from fall 2020 to June 19. The timing couldn’t be more resonant. The spirit of the documentary sways and marches to chants like “Say Their Names” and “Justice for Breonna Taylor.”

For this week's Best Shot Episode: Marlene Dietrich. I asked participants to choose either Morocco (1930) or Blonde Venus (1932).
Her most fascinating scene in Blonde Venus: the confession.
Is Marlene Dietrich a good actress? This question haunted me while watching Blonde Venus, the fascinating Pre-Code movie in which Dietrich plays dozens of archetypes within a brisk 93 minutes: loving mother, drunk floozy, hot temptress, frigid lover, forest nymph, martyred saint, gold digger, confident androgyne, isolated immigrant, jaded bitch, dazzling entertainer. It's enough to give you whiplash if you're trying to get a bead on Helen Jones, her cabaret singer / struggling mother in Blonde Venus (1932).
On the one hand she does everything "wrong." She rarely modulates her voice. Her characterizations aren't especially cohesive -- an impression she gives you in one moment she might take back with force in the very next...
Her most fascinating scene in Blonde Venus: the confession.
Is Marlene Dietrich a good actress? "Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me"
What's It About? The Memphis band Big Star has legions of diehard fans and critical acclaim aplenty, and its influence can be felt across the history of rock 'n' roll. But why did mainstream success elude them? Why did Big Star flame out after only three albums? This doc tries to put the pieces together.
Why We're In: Even fans don't know the whole story about this cult band and its members, so this doc will help them fill in some of the blanks. Chris Bell died in 1978 as an unknown, and the late Alex Chilton was also not a huge fan of talking to the media. "Nothing Can Hurt Me" puts the band into context of the Memphis scene, and it has tons of interviews with everyone left who was involved with the band, rock critics, and...

"3 Idiots" was declared the best film, while Rajkumar Hirani claimed the best director award for the movie. It also claimed the awards for the Best Screenplay, Best Dialogue, Best Story and Best Supporting Actor. Dev D won the Filmfare awards in the Best Supporting Actress, Critics' Award for Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design and Art Direction, Best Background Score and Rd Burman Award for new musical talent categories.
Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan and Vidya Balan were cited as best actor and best actress respectively at the star-studded 55th Filmfare awards ceremony.

Blonde Venus (1932)—Josef von Sternberg’s preposterously mesmerizing tale of mother love—runs the gamut from the glamorous heights of fame and success to the dilapidated depths of despair and ruin. Yet another melodramatic narrative of what Juliet Clark calls “the woman’s way” of upholding honor through dishonor, Magdalenian inferences still apply. This would be a great double bill with Emilio Fernández’s Víctimas del pecado (1951). What a mother won’t do for her child, including another john. Again, I have to wonder how influenced “El Indio” was by Sternberg’s melodramatics?
As Judy Bloch nails it in her capsule for Pfa’s ongoing Sternberg retrospective: “It’s not surprising that the French Surrealists gave themselves over to Sternberg’s films with Marlene Dietrich, who for them embodied the disruptive force. Marlene singing ‘Hot Voodoo’ in a gorilla suit brings the exotic home in Sternberg’s only Dietrich film set in America.
