John Hurt on Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer in New York: "He is quite different but technically, he is as clever as Hitchcock." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
At the Tribeca Grand Hotel in New York, John Hurt and I met up to discuss his pivotal role in Bong Joon-ho's not so merry-go-round science fiction thriller Snowpiercer. Hurt stars with Chris Evans, Kang-ho Song, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer and Ah-sung Ko as the last inhabitants on an iced-over Earth. We also spoke about his work with John Huston, Fred Zinnemann and Richard Fleischer, Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive, the triad with Lars von Trier - Dogville - Manderlay - Melancholia, and David Lynch's The Elephant Man. The genius of Brecht combined with Michael Colgan's Gate Theatre may turn into a new adventure for the consummate actor.

Dublin actor David Kelly passed away on Sunday following a short illness. He was 82-years-old. For over 50 years, working right up until last year, Kelly worked in theater, television, and film. His most famous role was in the 1980s Rte series “Strumpet City”. A piece of work he also singled out as one of his favorite. His role as O’Reilly the builder in 1975 made him recognizable all over the world. According to the Irish Times he often remarked on how those nine minutes in John Cleese’s comedy made him recognizable. Born in Dublin, 11th July 1929, he started acting at the age of eight in the Gaiety Theatre. His friend, Director of the Gate Theater, Michael Colgan, speaking to Rte, also remarked on what an excellent artist Kelly was. He was a trained calligrapher and a talented watercolour artist. Versatile Irish stage actor who became a familiar face across British drama
Before he became a familiar face on television and cinema screens, the outstanding Irish actor Tp McKenna, who has died after a long illness aged 81, bridged the gap between the old and the new Abbey theatres in Dublin. He appeared with the company for eight years during the interim period at the Queen's theatre; the old Abbey burned down in 1951, the new one opened by the Liffey in 1966.
During that time he made his reputation as a leading actor of great charm, vocal resource – with a fine singing voice – and versatility. He was equally adept at comedy and tragedy, a great exponent of the best Irish playwriting from Jm Synge and Séan O'Casey to Hugh Leonard and Brian Friel. The elder son in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night was a favourite, much acclaimed role.

Ireland’s most famous stage director Michael Colgan of the Gate Theater has snubbed Julia Roberts. Kevin Costner and Robert Redford saying he has no interest in casting them in plays because they lack the stage talent and background. Colgan, who regularly flies in top acting names to star in his productions, says some big Hollywood names have no interest for him. “No disrespect for her, but we wouldn’t want Julia Roberts in a play and we wouldn’t want Kevin Costner, can you imagine? Colgan says he is targeting real actors such as Philip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep and Ralph Fiennes for his productions. “ The people I want to work with are Philip Seymour Hoffman,” he told the Irish Sunday Times. He is a theater animal—he has come out of the theater…I didn’t want to work with Robert Redford.” Colgan says he is close to...

Christopher Eccleston plays John Lennon in a single film charting his transition from Beatle John to enduring and enigmatic icon.
Spanning a period of wildly fluctuating fortunes for Lennon between 1967 and 1971, writer Robert Jones articulates the burden of genius, as well as issues of fatherhood and fame.
The unexpected death of Beatles' manager Brian Epstein in 1967 marked a turning point in Lennon's life. This film focuses on the turbulent and intense period of change that followed, and how John was haunted by his troubled childhood.
Made in high definition, Lennon Naked also reveals the impact of re-establishing contact with his long lost father, and the events that led John to shed everything both personally and creatively, including calling time on The Beatles.
Meeting Yoko Ono was the catalyst for this new era and the film explores the development of their extraordinary relationship, their growing disillusionment with Britain and what caused...
