Hollywood has a long history of casting and awarding able-bodied actors to portray characters with disabilities. In the Oscars’ best actor category alone, there is Daniel Day-Lewis for My Left Foot, Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything, Colin Firth for The King’s Speech and Jamie Foxx for Ray. In the history of the Academy Awards, only three disabled actors have been awarded a best performance trophy for portraying a character who has their disability.
Director Aaron Schimberg notes that onscreen portrayals of people with disfigurements, as seen in his latest film A Different Man, are still largely played by able-bodied people in prosthetics. “On the other hand,” he continues, “When I’ve cast actors with disfigurements, people have called that exploitative, which seems to run counter to this whole discussion about representation that we’re having.” For his newest film, he wanted to interrogate the complexities of that sometimes counterproductive conversation.

The films up for the 2023 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Batman,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Elvis,” and “The Whale.” Our current odds show that “Elvis” (69/20) is favored to win, followed in order by “The Whale” (18/5), “The Batman” (9/2), “All Quiet on the Western Front” (9/2), and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (9/2).
Each of this category’s last five consecutive lineups has included a 70% first-time nominee majority, but this year’s rookie group is 16% smaller. The present subset is comprised of both “All Quiet on the Western Front” artists (Linda Eisenhamerova and Heike Merker) as well as two craftspeople from “The Whale” (Annemarie Bradley-Sherron and Judy Chin) and one each from “The Batman” (Michael Fontaine), “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Camille Friend), and “Elvis” (Jason Baird).
Baird shares his nomination with Mark Coulier and Aldo Signoretti, who have now amassed four bids apiece in this category. Signoretti...

“Holy God! Whattya showing me here?”
When Colin Farrell‘s Oz Cobblepot asked that question of Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader and Jeffery Combs’s Lieutenant Gordon in The Batman, he was reacting to a set of grisly pictures. The first set photos from The Batman spin-off The Penguin may not be nearly as disgusting, but they’re sure to provoke a strong reaction.
The HBO series, which takes place after Matt Reeves’ film, follows Cobblepot’s continuing evolution from the not-entirely respected underboss and Iceberg Lounge proprietor seen in The Batman to something closer to the criminal mastermind we know from the comics. Along the way, the series will further develop the Gotham underworld hinted at in The Batman, adding Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni and Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone.
The first images of Farrell shooting the series show him once again unrecognizable in makeup from Academy Award-nominated artist Mike Marino.

Fourteen years after “The Dark Knight” became the second film to win the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Stunt Ensemble, another Batman movie – simply titled “The Batman” – is up for the same prize. Writer-director Matt Reeves’ take on the caped crusader, which stars Robert Pattinson as the seventh live action feature film iteration of the character, would be the sixth superhero flick to achieve this honor. As of now, the list also includes DC’s “Wonder Woman” and “Wonder Woman 1984” and Marvel’s “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Endgame.”
“The Batman” offers the grittiest screen reimagining of the classic comic book character yet, with Pattinson conveying the hero’s inward depression more plainly than ever. Two years into his tenure as a masked vigilante, he is faced with stopping the Riddler (Paul Dano) from continuing his serial killing spree while remaining committed to his original goal of holding organized...

All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major haul of wins at the film awards ceremony on Sunday night.
At London’s Royal Festival Hall, Netflix’s German anti-war epic took the BAFTAs for best film, alongside best adapted screenplay and best director, and hoovered up most of the craft honors for a total of seven gongs (a BAFTA record for a film not in the English language).
Away from the Western Front, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin won four awards, including half the performance honors, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan landing supporting wins. Elsewhere, Austin Butler won leading actor for Elvis, and Cate Blanchett leading actress for Tar.
As had largely been expected, Richard E. Grant was a delightfully upbeat and uncontroversial host, with no political jokes or any jibes aimed at the guests (although he did reference Will Smith,...

“Elvis” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 11 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and hairstyling but lost the special effects race to one of its Oscar rivals, “The Whale.” Another Oscar contender, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” won contemporary makeup.
These wins boost the odds of one of these three films prevailing at the Academy Awards. Last year marked the only time in the nine-year history of these guild honors that one of its winners had not gone on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. While “Coming 2 America” won three awards here, it was “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” that won over academy voters. That biopic had lost both period/character guild awards (hairstyling to “Being the Ricardos” and makeup to Oscar rival “Cruella”) plus the special effects category to “Coming 2 America.

Elvis topped the feature competition at the 10th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards (IATSE Local 706), winning a pair of awards for period make-up and period hair styling.
Accepting with the team, Shane Thomas said of the team’s challenge to creating Elvis Presley, “We wanted to represent and respect, but not impersonate.” He also saluted director Baz Luhrmann’s “unwavering commitment” to filmmaking.
Also on Saturday at The Beverly Hilton, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever collected the award for contemporary hair styling. Department head Camille Friend dedicated the award to the late Chadwick Boseman.
Angela Bassett – who is Oscar-nominated for her role as Queen Ramonda in Wakanda Forever – received the Guild’s Distinguished Artisan Award during the ceremony. Bassett called the Guild members the “unsung heroes of filmmaking” as she accepted the award. “For any show, there is a team who works long and hard to help us bring to life the character.

Two of the five Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling — “The Batman” and “Elvis” — contend in three categories apiece at the guild awards on Feb. 11. Another contender, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has a pair of bids while “The Whale” has a single nomination. The fifth Oscar contender, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” was snubbed by the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards.

“We were working together very carefully to create a lot of characters,” reveals Naomi Donne about “The Batman” in our recent webchat. The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is particularly tough to predict early on because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in two stages. First, upwards of 15 members of the branch who attend special screenings cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters moving on to the second stage (it was a lucky seven till 2021). Those members from the first stage and any other members who either attend screenings of excerpts from these semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated; that is up from three in years past. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Makeup and Hairstyling predictions.).

It's been almost a year since director Matt Reeves gave us "The Batman," and I think it's safe to say we're all eager to explore more of its grimy gothic environs. Well "take it easy, sweetheart" -- sorry, I had to -- because Reeves is working on "The Penguin" spin-off for HBO Max, which thus far doesn't appear to have tasted Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslov's merciless sword and is, according to star Colin Farrell, set to start shooting in February. While multiple projects centered on Batman villains such as Clayface and Scarecrow are said to be in the early stages of development, according to The Hollywood Reporter, "The Penguin" is currently the furthest along. It's set to arrive before we get the Robert Pattinson-led sequel to "The Batman."

Colin Farrell might have appeared in Matt Reeves' "The Batman" for just a few scenes -- he had less than 10 minutes of screentime -- but the actor underwent a complete transformation to play Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot, aka The Penguin. Each day prior to filming, Farrell spent four hours in the makeup chair; that's how elaborate the prosthetics were.
When we last saw the DC Comics mobster at the end of "The Batman," he was looking over the flooded, chaos-ridden city of Gotham from a window, which seemed to suggest the supervillain would be in the running to take over the throne of the city's dangerous underworld. After all, someone has to fill the void now that his old boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) is gone.

Ryan Coogler‘s “Black Panther” made history four years ago when it won the first Oscar for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film — in fact, it won three: Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Score. Now, the highly anticipated sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has been nominated for five Academy Awards and could very likely win the same number of trophies. Just like last time around, the sequel is the favorite to win Best Costume Design for Ruth E. Carter. Its other potential victories are for a pair of A-list superstars: Angela Bassett in Best Supporting Actress and Rihanna in Best Song. (“Wakanda” is also nominated for Best Makeup & Hairstyling and Best Visual Effects.)

The Academy has released the list of nominations for the 2023 Oscars. Everything Everywhere All at Once led the pack this year with 11 nominations, followed closely by the war drama All Quiet On The Western Front and dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin.
A few actors who made big comebacks this year received nominations for their roles, including Brendan Fraser for The Whale and former child actor Ke Huy Quan for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Also in the running for best actor are Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, Billy Nighy and Paul Mescal, all first-time nominees. In a surprising nod to indie film To Leslie, Andrea Riseborough scored a nomination for best actress. The race also includes Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Michelle Williams and Michelle Yeoh.
Jimmy Kimmel will return to host the Oscars, making his third appearance as emcee after his previous hosting stints in 2017 and 2018.

Colin Farrell can’t wait to transform back into Gotham City menace, The Penguin.
“The Batman” scene-stealing star told Entertainment Tonight that it was “so much fun” playing the nightclub owner-slash-mob boss baddie Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot in Matt Reeves’ brooding epic superhero film.
“I’ve been around the block man. That was an easy sport, I mean, it was a joy,” Farrell gushed when asked if he would return for the confirmed sequel, offering an emphatic yes. “Oh my god, you kidding me? It’s so much fun, are you joking [with] me?”
Yet in the meantime, Farrell’s gangster Penguin will fly onto Warner Bros. Discovery streamer HBO Max with a spinoff series anticipated to film in early 2023. Also revealed in the Et interview? Farrell said that while “The Batman” writer/filmmaker Matt Reeves isn’t directing the spinoff series, the vision will remain hugely his.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Xochitl Gomex wants her MCU character America Chaves to team up with The Avengers.
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness brought many big things from the comics into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it was a pretty big deal to have Sam Raimi back in the Marvel world after his hit Spider-Man trilogy, we also got a big punching entrance for America Chavez! Played by Xochitl Gomez, we got to see her come into her own as a hero from another universe, alongside Earth-616’s Doctor Strange.”

“The Batman” director Matt Reeves released a deleted scene from his superhero epic on Thursday featuring Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader facing off against his classic nemesis, the Joker, played by Barry Keoghan. The scene is available after visiting a website that mimics the word puzzles posed by the Riddler (Paul Dano) in the movie.
As Reeves explained to Variety in an interview in February, the scene follows Batman’s discovery that the Riddler has killed the Gotham City police commissioner, leaving behind another of his cryptic notes addressed to the Batman. Unnerved by the Riddler’s interest in him, Batman decides to seek out insight into what makes the Riddler tick.
“I thought he would be really insecure about this and he’d probably want to find some way to get into the [Riddler’s] mindset, like in ‘Manhunter’ or ‘Mindhunter’ — this idea of profiling somebody, so you can predict his next move,...

Matt Reeves’s “The Batman” is finally out in theaters, and reviews have been pretty great. A lot of credit for that must go to the creative artisans who helped Reeves attain his vision for the Dark Knight. To say that the crafts of Reeves’s collaborators are fully on display in this movie would be an understatement, especially when you consider that multiple craftspeople involved with the movie are currently up for Oscars later this month.
“The Batman” was one of the many productions that famously got shut down due to Covid after it began filming in January 2020. It had to turn off cameras for six months until pandemic protocols were in place, but you’re not likely to be able to tell from watching it.

Matt Reeves never meant for Colin Farrell to look unrecognizable in “The Batman.”
In the finished film, Farrell’s appearance is utterly obliterated in the role of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, the scarred and dumpy mid-level Gotham City gangster with the (unwelcome) nickname of “the Penguin.” But when the 55-year-old director — who co-wrote “The Batman” with Peter Craig — first approached Farrell for the role, he was focused on Farrell’s ability to bring grit and sensitivity in the same performance.
“He could have that mix of being incredibly, incredibly scary and volatile, and then all of a sudden, you’d see this vulnerable side that really made you feel for that guy,” Reeves tells Variety. “So I really wanted him to play the character.”
When they met, however, Reeves noticed that Farrell had recently gained weight for a different movie, which fit into his conception of the longstanding Batman villain as...

Michael Marino worked on Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall’s many characters for Coming 2 America, taking over the work the legendary Stan Baker created in the original. Murphy reprised at least eight of the original characters from the 1988 movie while Hall donned prosthetics for three of the characters. Marino also reveals what Murphy does in the makeup chair for hours as the prosthetics are applied.

You think you obsessively check for signs of aging? Michael Marino does it for a living, and not just on his own face. "I'm always looking at how a person's face moves and wrinkles," says the prosthetic makeup designer.
For Marino, hunting for neck creases and droopy eyelids on Hollywood stars is a critical part of his job. "I can't just make up wrinkles," he says, explaining that the best results in prosthetic makeup are achieved when the pieces follow the path of an actor's own creases. "Their face is driving ...

Heidi Klum's 2016 Halloween costume was an intense ensemble effort, and while a lot of work went into creating the supermodel's five clones, it didn't cost anywhere near $10 million. "I mean obviously $10 million—that is absolutely impossible," Klum told E! News exclusively at the Heidi Klum Swim x Bloomingdales launch Wednesday. "I mean, I would never let that happen...I don't even have the money to pay for that—that's so crazy!" That astronomical price tag started floating around after Mike Marino of Prosthetic Renaissance jokingly told TooFab.com it cost $10 million to transform Klum's Halloween crew. The Project Runway host told E! News Marino was...

Heidi Klum has morphed her supermodel body into many impressive Halloween costumes over the years with prosthetics and body paint. But this year, it appears the America’s Got Talent judge took a break from all the special effects.
Klum, 43, finally revealed her costume Monday night, and it was definitely not what fans were expecting. The mother of four had her partygoers eagerly waiting for the big reveal as a huge box – labeled with “Made in Germany” – arrived on the red carpet. Age may be nothing but a number, but for Heidi Klum, it translates onto one helluva Halloween getup. The celebrated costume aficionado, known for her outlandish outfits in years past, was back to her old tricks - her very old tricks - when she dressed up as a wrinkled elderly lady for her famed Halloween bash Thursday in New York City. The supermodel, 40, was virtually unrecognizable as she pulled out all the stops for the eye-popping look. Arriving at Marquee nightclub, Klum appeared in full-on special-effects makeup, complete with wrinkled neck, stringy gray hair, liver spots and a cane. (Oscar-winning makeup wiz Bill Corso,...
