Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Not at all what I expected, much much better.
I was concerned that this was Romeo and Romeo. The classic tale of star crossed lovers who couldn't be together, but they were both guys. Big Deal. I was shocked. Yes It is a love story, and yes the two leads are the same sex. But this isn't a gay cowboy movie. It's a love story, it is a life story too. Just a really well told story about the relationships of two people. I hope this film doesn't get attention because it's gay. (I am gay by the way.) Heath Ledger really is fantastic. But not because he plays a gay character. If he had fallen in love with with a woman this would have been as equally wonderful of a performance. Jake is fantastic too. He could have very easily been the school quarterback falling in love the head female cheerleader, and his performance would have been just as wonderful. This movie isn't special because it's about gay characters. I love that it is, and that it's so well done, but don't go see this to see a gay cowboy movie. Go see this because we have all had loves in our lives that had struggles. We've all had moments of uncertainty in relationships, and yeah, we've all done things other people may not agree with, but we did them because it was true to ourselves. I hope everyone sees this movie. Because It is NOT a sensational movie about two men, but because it IS a realistic movie about human emotion. ENJOY!
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
Seriously lacking in the wake of Prizoner of Azkaban.
I am an adult male (some would argue...). I fell in love with the Harry Potter books. I was very afraid when they were turned into movies. I hated the first one. The second was better. I thought POA was downright fantastic. It paid it's dues to the book, but was told in it's own form and style. .......Possible Spoilers for POA...... The whomping willow was fantastic. Bucbeak scenes let me feel as if I was flying. There was an overall comprehensive theme and feel to the movie. I think number 4 just fell flat. It was a good movie, but didn't have any of the feeling of the third. The YULE BALL was better executed on the Warner Bros. web site than in the film. It just lacks any real connection. The relation with Serus was nice. This film had so many opportunities to connect, but fell terribly short. The students from the other schools were merely walk-ons. I was just really disappointed. I was so excited by the third movie, this one really let me down. I enjoyed the fourth book far more than the third, yet the third movie was so much better. Oh well, let's hope for the next one.
Munich (2005)
way way way too long
Parts of this Movie were great, part terribly boring. I was put off by all the killing, but because I had no real connection to any of the characters. It was lost on me. It was like watching the news. There are deaths every day, but without a personal connection, empathy was all I could muster. I think Eric Bana did a good job with what he was giving, but was actually sad I went to the theatre to see it. I would have enjoyed it better at home on DVD, so I could pause at some point to PEE. If this were a docu-drama by some first timer, it would have been o.k. But fell way short of my expectations. I wasn't old enough to witness the actual events, or hear about them on T.V. The first 15 minutes or so, I had absolutely no idea what was going on. The heart of this movie could have been completed in a 30 second p.s.a. Definitely check it out on video, it is a movie worth watching. Hopefully the DVD will include some documentaries on what happened. I wasn't alive for WWll either, but would watch Schindler's list over and over again. This movie left me a little cold.
Alexander (2004)
Don't let the critics keep you from seeing it!
It definitely deserves to be seen on the big screen. While there have been a lot of harsh reviews of this movie, it is more than worth the price of admission. This is far from a perfect film. But what a fantastic story. The movie is like 2hours and 50 minutes long, and yeah probably 15 of thost minutes sucked.
The opening and the closing are boring. Anthony Hopkins narrating a history story special. I didn't know that much about Alexander the Great. Just what I remembered from school millions of years ago. I also didn't care. I think the movie tells a great story all on it's own. I understood enough about what was going on. This is NOT a history channel biography of Alexander the Great, but rather an artistic telling of a historic story. I just hate to see it get so ripped apart. 60,000,000,000 people loved the incredibles. that's great, but this movie is so much more. Please go see this film, because flaws and all it was highly entertaining.
Solaris (2002)
hypnotic wad of ambient, lush, restrained emotion.
If you didn't see this in the theatre, buy it or rent it when it comes out on video. I went to see this as a fallback (the film we were going to see was sold out) and fell in love with it. George Clooney just freaks me out. I don't watch T.V. because it's stupid. So I never saw George on the hospital show, yet I heard about him everywhere, it was annoying. I have seen him in some movies, he was fine in thin red line, great in three kings, ok in perfect storm, and really fun in welcome to collinwood, but solaris blew me away. We saw it at 7 o'clock. I left the theatre kind of teary eyed, (which is very unusual for me) and was back at the theatre to catch the midnight show. This movie affected me in a great way. At least check it out. It's far better than most of the schlock out there.
Seabiscuit (2003)
Best actor, Seabiscuit
Great movie about a horse. The parts about the people were ok too. I suppose all the actors are in the supporting category, because the only star was Seabiscuit. The movie made me laugh, made me cry, and had me on the edge of my seat. Great movie, the Horse wins (I'm not talking about any race).
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
McDisney dreadful. 2 violent for kids, 2 dumb for adults.
How sad. I was so looking forward to this movie. I love Pirate Lore. From the director of that smash hit The Mexican, this movie sucked. It should have gotten more Disney treatment, or none at all. The story was so shallow, the characters were so shallow, that it would have maybe been a terribly entertaining film for the kids, but the movie was too dark and violent for the little ones. I thought Depp would work wonders with this, but the script was so inane. There wasn't enough meat for the adults. I didn't care at all about any of the characters. I kept wating to hear "Ding, please turn the page."
Some nice moments, but just a few. Over all, a let down. Rent the Musketeer for swordplay, or rent Mutiny for munity. As for pirates, even the Pirate Movie starring Kristie McNichol was more engaging than this. And it was a musical.
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Spectacular Spectacular
The writing left a bit to be desired. Not great as a whole, some of the scenes are even painful stretches. But other moment of this film compensate greatly. What a wonderful escape. Telouse was annoying, but I loved the rest of the Characters, I wonder if the actors were working together, of if Baz Luhrmann told each of them a different style to go for.
The most visually delicious movie I have seen in forever. It is like any old hollywood musical in that is completely presentational, but what fun. Better than anything else I've seen in years. The fact that the movie is so polarizing speaks highly of director. People love it, or hate it. That's because unlike most directors, Baz Lurhmann did not back down. He gave us the story the way he wanted to. Without comprimise. Not worried about trying to please everyone. The result is that the people who don't get it, never will, but for the people who do, it's a true treat.
Midnight Express (1978)
Over priviliged white american is the victim.
Whatever. This movie was dumb. Alan parker should never deal with anything more important than FAME. "what if I get kicked out of the dance department!" this is way over his head
The white kid breaks the law, and were supposed to feel sorry for him.
I'm a young white american male who would love the opportunity to go to turkey. I wouldn't break any laws. Because it is WRONG! If the Turks were as evil as the movie depicted them, they would have just shot him.
The movie is worth watching, just because davis has some great moments, and he has a cute butt.
Chicago (2002)
boring same old same old
This movie is perfectly suited to the masses. nothing to challenge, nothing to impress either. sadly. bob fosse was a kick butt choreographer. he was amazing.
the story ain't so great, and the song's aren't either. all that jazz is great, presented by catherine here. jones was so boring to watch, she was far too presentational, didn't seem like a real person at all. this movie should have been presented as a short. all that jazz, the tango, and rene's dance with the mirrors. richard gere sucked. sorry, he can't sing, or dance, so let's put him in a musical. whatever. he sucked. he was great this year in unfaithful. that was a fun flick. rene suprised me. there were moments when it got pretty close, but she amazed me. she transcended herself. becoming glorious iconic figure.
amazing. if you wan't to watch a musical, watch moulin rouge. that was a movie worth seeing. everything you've seen a million times before presented in a way that's never been done. original, inspiring, and entertaining.
The Recruit (2003)
crotch farrell is fun to watch.
the opening of this movie cracked me up. the stalker internet montage followed with the directors homage to cocktail, replacing cruise with farrell was hysterical. crotch (colin) farrell rocks. he's sexy in a way cruise could never be, he just seems dangerous enough to make him interesting. this whole movie is sexy. i love the scene when the fat ugly chick, just kidding, there isn't a fat ugly chick. there is bridget moynahan, far from fat. far from ugly. it was so fun watching the love scenes between crotch, and bridget. two people who have to pretend to have the hots for each other, but really they think the other is trying to kill them, blow up the world, whatever. it's fun to watch their faces, "i love you, but i have to kill you". too funny. al pacino. poor al. if he said nothing is as it appears one more time, i would have walked out, (lie, would have stuck around to see the our two hero's run aroung half naked some more.) fun movie, the real world trains for the cia. only cute folks in this one. the story was predictable, but whatever it was still fun to watch. if you are starting to appreciate crotch farrell, make sure to check out tigerland. great war movie for people who hate war.
