Rafiki (2018)
Same poo, different toilet.
Because of a school trip, I had the opportunity to watch the movie "Rafiki": a dramatic Kenyan movie directed by Wanari Kahiu. The plot takes place in Nairobi, where Kena, a brillant highschooler, fell in love with Ziki, a young woman with a flashy style. However, their love is forbidden, because they're both girls, and being homosexual in Nigeria is prohibited. Furthermore their parents are political opponents, that's make their relationship even more impossible. And that's what makes this movie so basic.
If I had one dollar for every time I saw this "forbidden love gimmick" I would be a freaking billionaire!!
For sure, the "Romeo and Juliette" cliché script is horrible. There are so many problems in the writing. The characters are poorly written, they're are too 2 dimensional, we can't explore a lot of their personalities or perspectives. And a movie with flat character isn't a good movie.
In term of cinematography, it's not that amazing. The mise-en-scène is very basic, the overlapped audio's cuts are not fully mastered and made the understanding of what was happening in the screen very hard.
At least the soundtrack was good and the topic of homosexuality was well aborded. But I still think this movie was garbage and a big waste of time.
I can understand how we can put more than 5 stars.
BoJack Horseman (2014)
don't stop
"BoJack Horseman"
If someone had told me one day that I'd be glorifying an animated series about an alcoholic horse addicted to numerous substances, I wouldn't have believed it. But "BoJack Horseman" is a much deeper series than it seems. The story is told through the main characters and their interactions. Indeed, as numerous as they are, they all play an important role in the story. What's more, the art direction, designs and unique colors accentuate the irony of the major subjects addressed throughout the series, and there's no denying the scriptwriting genius. The series also uses satire and dark humor very effectively to deal with dark themes. "BoJack Horseman" is a series whose quality increases from season to season, reaching its apogee in the final season. Certainly, this final season tackles important themes such as redemption, responsibility and the search for meaning in life. It also maintained the series' unique blend of intelligent humor and emotional moments. They couldn't have wrapped up the series any better. 10/10.
They Cloned Tyrone (2023)
A HOE, A GANGSTER AND A PIMP
So, what if you take Matrix, and you mix it with Get Out.
You basically Get They cloned Tyrone. A movie with such a great concept and moreover, it's really good.
A great cast, a great soundtrack, but it may be too long for this kind of movie.
Indeed, the pace wasn't really it, too much scene where nothing was told. It's like a huge waste. But it's OK, because the characters are in fact really good written and admirable. The satire and the irony behind the message given was smooth and top notch.
It's the kind of movie where you have a lot of fun but that you don't feel like you're going to rewatch them. So, what if you take Matrix, and you mix it with Get Out.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)
The exaggerated swag of 4 mutant teenagers.
An excellent film. I had chills all the way through, I was totally immersed.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is an animated action film centered on the license's 4 main recurring characters. This umpteenth adaptation focuses on human and mutant relationships, with an existential philosophy on acceptance of others and heroism, wrapped up in fantasies about adolescence.
It's dynamic, fluid and powerful, the graffiti aspect is magnificent and very well used, the 2D-3D mix is as effective as ever, and you can really feel the influence of a certain animated film. The action scenes and staging left me breathless, beyond description.
As for the script, despite the middle of the film, which had a pretty bad rhythm, we're on to something very effective. The portrayal of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is genius, and the characters are well written, especially Leonardo and Splinter. The French version is excellent, especially in terms of adaptation, and of course there's an incredible "modern" soundtrack to match the film.
And it's very funny.
KAWABOONGA
9/10.
Shrek (2001)
The perfect Anti-Disney
When I was young, I always wondered: "Why the princess needs a prince to save her?"
And Shrek's answer was amazing: THEY DON'T!
This movie is groundbreaking, amazingly good, and so emotional. With this masterpiece, Dreamwork just poops on Disney for sure. It's a freaking masterpiece.
Even if the message of the movie is just "Be yourself and does not care about the others", it was brought so well, because, the main character is an ogre, an ugly, disgusting, dirty and rude ogre. Disney could never. That's one this is one of the greatest movies of the 21st century.
And of course, the audience is very large. If you are a kid, a teenager or an old man, you will be touched by this tragic, funny, entertaining and well-written story.
8.3/10.
Tenet (2020)
Wasted potential
Tenet explores a complex world with a hard-to-understand narrative, and the actors are very good. However, the concept within the film: reversal could have been better exploited. Indeed, with the use of time for the scenario, it's impossible not to have inconsistencies or plot holes. Tenet is no exception, with several scenes in the film contradicting the film itself.
But let's look at the positives: there's no use of CGI, the film is authentic, and the cinematography is exceptional. Of course, given that Nolan is the director.
Unfortunately, Tenet is not a film I'm likely to see again. 7.1/10.
The Green Mile (1999)
I'm literally crying while writing this.
The Green Mile" is a captivating cinematic masterpiece that skilfully blends drama and the supernatural. Adapted from Stephen King's novel, the film explores the lives of prisoners and guards in a death cell in the 1930s. It is a Christ-like tale set against the backdrop of racial segregation.
Moving performances, particularly by Tom Hanks, add emotional depth to the story. Despite its long running time, the film maintains constant tension thanks to its impeccable direction with so much iconic scenes. And it's surely the best film over 3 hours long. "The Green Mile" leaves an indelible mark thanks to its reflection on human nature, justice and compassion, making it a must-see of the genre.
Oppenheimer (2023)
"It Sloppenheimy time" --Cillian or something like that
Does the end justify the means?
Christopher Nolan's latest film tells a story divided into 3 parts: a geopolitical conflict, the making of the atomic bomb and Oppenheimer vs Lewis Strauss.
It's a biographical film, so obviously it's not going to appeal to everyone.
Oppenheimer is an intense film, but only for the first two hours; the last act is not as good from an editing point of view, which can be seen as clumsy or destabilizing, but it's an interesting film nonetheless.
The film's direction and cinematography are also magnificent. The same can be said of the soundtrack: Hans Zimmer has composed a masterpiece.
However, the pace is unbearable: apart from the bomb test scene, where the tension is perfectly set up, the film is rather slow, stretching itself out unnecessarily, not to mention the moral of : "What? My bomb kills people?!!" we hear over and over again in the final act.
Still, it's good entertainment for movie fans, but it's aimed at a very specific audience that doesn't deserve as much attention.
Redline (2009)
Very underrated
In a world where galaxies are reunited, technology is highly advanced and Science-fiction and action meet, the number one entertainment is car racing. And I think it's wonderful.
It's the film with the best art direction I've ever seen.
A CGI-free, 100% hand-animated film doesn't hurt. The animation is breathtaking, intense, dynamic, striking, fluid, with well-written and engaging characters, what more can I say.
A mix of romance, comedy and action is a fairly common combination in the world of cinema, but here, the editing and direction make the whole thing completely digestible, you don't even know the time is passing. And of course, the soundtrack is captivating.
It's watchable even more than 10 years after its release, so let's hope the next generation discovers this classic.
Dunkirk (2017)
A good documentary, nothing more.
Dunkirk is a film about the strategic retreat of the British in 1940, during the Second World War.
The turbulent events unfold from 3 points of view: sky, sea and land. The portrayal of psychological pain is very well done.
It's clear that the cinematography, the shots, the staging and the direction are magnificent - this is a Nolan film. But that doesn't change the fact that the film is bored, and not at all exciting. None of the characters are endearing, and I wouldn't care if any of them lost their lives; they're just an empty representation of the psychological victims of war. This film is nothing more than a documentary, sublimely directed.
6.7/10.
The Karate Kid (2010)
Entertaining
A truly underrated masterpiece right here. I really don't understand the hate toward this movie, because for me it's better than the original.
Jaden Smith plays a young American who arrives in China, following the hero's journey as a basis for development. He goes through classic events: homesickness, lack of confidence, but with the help of his master, he eventually overcomes his trials.
In this entertaining story, we find emotion, action, romance, humor and an attachment to the characters.
It's just an exciting story.
And, of course, the action is top-notch. The choreography, the rhythm, the camera movements, the staging, it's all magnificent. As a big fan of combat sports and hand-to-hand combat, I have to admit that there's nothing wrong with the fight scenes.
And the final act was just peak.
Very good movie.
Man on Fire (2004)
Good, nothing more
It's in an incredible thriller with action and suspens that Denzel Washinton delivers an incredible acting performance. Man on Fire is a really good movie with a very revelant plot.
The relation created between the characters are overwhelming (Pita and Creasy's friendship is so cute).
There is so much to talk about in this cinematography's achievement and if I have to say something bad, I would probably talk about that goofy editing.
It didn't age that good, the direction could have been so much better, but they decided to put all this horrible effects that made the movie less appreciable, it's so unfortunate.
Anyway, I really like how the revenge concept is used in this movie, it's so unique and I feel all the intensity and violence that they tried to put in the actions scenes.
8.5/10.
Gisaengchung (2019)
Poor people are the ghosts of high society.
This movie is simply a rare gem.
An ambitious discourse separating social classes, wrapped in action, drama, depth and softened by comedy. The way the characters contrast with each other, despite their similarities, is admirable.
There's nothing to fault in this film.
Just surprising.
I'd like to congratulate the director on his ingenious editing and staging of the film, as the portrayal of the bourgeois and the poorer can literally tell the story. It's easy to understand the plot and the weight of what's at stake.
It's all fluidly brought to life, so you can enjoy it to the full.
It's clear that many subliminal messages are conveyed through simple objects or metaphorically placed boundaries.
A masterpiece.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
WOW
Pulp Fiction is, without any doubt, a pillar of the modern cinema, that has so much inspiration and references nice to notice and Tarantino, use these elements to polish his art.
Everything was perfect, down to the last-minute details. Samuel L. Jackson had a one in a life actor performance. It was just phenomenal, the way his emotions translate to the screen, his charisma, his voice, it was so good and it's the same thing for John Travolta and Uma Thurman. There is also an iconic soundtrack.
On top of that, I think that this movie describes a realistic side of gangsters; it shows us that they are not all bad, that they are human, that they are not invincible, that they enjoy simple things.
And of course, that movie got everything, drama, action, adventure, it can also be seen as a race against time with an excellent plot and a mastered pacing.
To make it short this movie is unique, iconic and so inspirational.
La haine (1995)
I LOVE IT
"Heard about the guy who fell off a skyscraper? On his way down past each floor, he kept saying to reassure himself: So far so good... so far so good... so far so good. How you fall doesn't matter. It's how you land!"
I don't really know what to say. There are no such things that can be compared to this movie, except reality. This movie explains in a satiric way the circle of hate and how it just keep growing, and when the main characters decide to stop it, an accident happens. And I think that it is a beautiful way to say that life doesn't always reward us when we do good things.
The moral of this movie is ground-breaking. It had made me brainstorming for an hour. I've never seen a movie like this. And the staging is so amazing. The white and black filter makes the film so much intense. The actors are, indubitably perfect, a perfect analyse of France's urban side.
That's why I think that this is one of the greatest movies of all time.
Shingeki no Kyojin (2013)
PEAK FICTION SPOTTED
How do we feel when we write one of the greatest plots of all time? You don't know? Ask Hajime Isayama. Because, for sure, Attack on Titan is one the greatest Animated show of all time.
There is a high probability that people will still be talking about it in 10 years, the reason is that it's timeless. There is to much thing to talk about: the foreshadowings, the fact that EVERYTHING matters is really impressive and incredible. Most of the characters are unforgeable, and amazingly written have a development with no flaw. The soundtrack is already iconic, I love these songs so much. And of course, MAPPA and Wit did a really good job at the animation, it's gorgeous, dynamic, fluid, it looks so good. I'm not sure if one day I'll experiment something like that.
The First Slam Dunk (2022)
"SAKURAGI, WITH THE DUNK!!!"
At first, I was curious about this movie.
Then, I was astonished about how amazing it was.
For sure, it may be one of the greatest animated movie of all time.
It was just ground breaking: the animation, the staging, the flow, the voice actors and the music (oh my god, the music it was so good).
The way that the movie went was just so original.
I'm glad it isn't some copy paste manga's adaptation.
This was special.
People may be mad because of the CGI, despite the fact that it was beautiful and so intense. The movements were perfect.
And, as a big basketball fan and player, I can say that the game was so loyal to basketball.
To make it short, yeah, Slam Dunk is the best sport anime.
Barbie (2023)
Drop the kids at Oppenheimer the adults can see a real, philosophical masterpiece
I'm not someone who often watches comedies, so they don't make me laugh much, but if they all became as funny as Barbie, I might give it another go.
Because I really laughed out loud during the film.
It did away perfectly with the comedy and the moralizing, a bit deeper, philosophical stuff.
Of course, the soundtrack is top-notch, the sets are breathtaking and there's Ryan Gosling: the main reason I came.
In addition to all that, this film is a good critic of patriarchal rule, without overdoing it. It questions gender roles in a fluid way, and brings existential questions to the fore.
By the way, I don't understand the opinions of those who didn't like the film because it promoted feminism. Whereas Barbie is literally an invention designed to make women feel as important as men in society, to break down stereotypes and glorify gender equality.
Ok whatever, go and see it, it's worth it.
The Dark Knight (2008)
THAT'S WHY HE'S THE GOAT! THE GOAT!!!!!
For real, this is the greatest movie of all time that i've never seen something like that before.
I'm so happy to be alive right now, because if I wasn't, I would not be able to testify this masterpiece.
There is everything we can hope to see in a movie.
Christopher Nolan is flexing with his genius one more time.
At first the characters are great and so well written. Bruce Wayne's development is so interesting and amazing, Christian Bale is the perfect case for Batman.
Speaking of cast, I had to speak about the groundbreaking Joker's performance by Heath Ledger, it was a one time in a life masterpiece.
To make it short, it is a perfect movie.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
HORRIBLE!
It is horrible that this movie wasn't released earlier.
It's just phenomenal how perfect it is. The artistic direction, the animation, the backgrounds, the soundtrack (oh my god metro boomin i love you) , the characters, the plot, the foreshadowing: EVERYTHING IS SO GORGEOUS AND PERFECT! It is the GREATEST animated movie of all time, the GREATEST spider-man movie of all time and one of the best super heroe movie you can see.
I absolutely love Gwen's development and the role she played in this movie. Like almost every other character, who are so well-written. And of course, my favorite is Spider-Punk.
The animation is just fabulous. I was so amazed at how they used so many animation styles and made the transition between them so fluid and natural. The 3D/2D mix is groundbreaking and requires so much skill and mastery. I had high expectations, and the movie was so much better than what I was waiting for. I was not ready.
If you guys haven't seen it, you totaly should because "Across the Spider-Verse" isn't just a movie, it's an experience.
