Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Enjoy!
Man, I don't believe how many people bashes movies of this kind. You don't like it, worse for you. The rest of the world had a great time watching this movie. Never thought that maybe you are missing something? That the whole rest of the world loved it? Maybe we are all crazy or we are all stupid or dummies. But I don't think so. This movie is Entertainment in all its glory. Who gives a damn about the cheesy script? Hell, if I want to watch a "serious" movie, I won't go for George Lucas! On the other hand, the "purists" that say that the first trilogy was better and this one sucks: get a life. Don't take it too serious. Maybe you loved the first one more because you were younger! I was 9 when the original Star Wars hit the cinemas. Now I'm 34 and I still enjoy this movies like if I was 9. The trick is to KNOW what to expect from them.
I, Robot (2004)
A really good movie
I don't understand a couple of things. Have you people lost your ability to be entertained? This movie is a fascinating action movie. But, for once, an action movie that has a plot. Even the computer fiction is believable.
I agree is not the same as the book (which I read years ago), but I have a lot of fun watching it. Why? Because I forgot about the book in the moment I entered the theatre. Will Smith is an OK actor, you can't expect him to act like Al Pacino. There is no point in bitching about his act. Wake up, people, in the end this IS a Will Smith movie. What the hell did you expect?. An Oscar performance? Come on!!!
Sure there are a lot of "better" sci-fi movies out there, but... who cares? I saw them all and the only thing I can say is that I loved "2001" but I knew it was a Kubrick film. I also loved "Starship troopers" because I KNEW what to expect from it: a Paul Verhoeven movie. This is the exactly same case, the director of "The Crow" and "Dark City" with Will Smith on it: DAMN, THIS ONE WAS A HELL OF A RIDE.
Relax, people, let entertainers entertain you, don't think about it too much and HAVE FUN!!!
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
A letdown
It's difficult for me to judge this movie. Did I like it? Yes. Is it a "good" movie? No. I really liked "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs". Not very sure about "Jackie Brown". And "From Dusk Till Down" may be one of my all time favorites (directed by Robert Rodriguez, tough). But where does this movie fails? The problem is that it looks like a random mix of fight scenes taken from really bad Hong-Kong movies. The blood and guts look so fake and so funny that it can only be taken as a tribute to Monty Phyton's "Holy Grail". The plot, if any, is so narrow that we don't even know who those people are or why they are fighting about. I got tired of the action with no plot and my girlfriend got sick of watching that blinded violence. In the end, the film does not leave you anything.
But why did I like it? Because it entertained me a lot. Because is a non-stop action movie. But, then again, a lot of b-class movies did the same. So, I will watch the second part; but for Tarantino this is his worst movie to date.
Men in Black II (2002)
Just another MIB, but... man it's fun!!
This movie is a good example of great fun. Isn't that what movies should be for? Total entertainment. Not so good acting, good direction, good jokes, good special effects, nothing to think about. I specially liked the sci-fi geek scene. It reminded me of a lot of people that write in this forums! Obviously, if you want to think or be inspired by the message of a movie this movie is not for you. 7/10
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Stop whining and have some fun
All people whining about this movie certainly have lost their ability to have fun. I don't know if this movie is a perfect 10 or a 8. But is as close as it can be. This movie isn't about a deep plot. It's about good vs. evil. It's about romance. It's about action. Holes in the plot? So what? What was so special about Ep. IV-VI? Those plots were written based on the same formulae. Nothing we haven't seen or read before. Those movies were just a mix between Dune, Lord Of The Rings and other fantasy and sci-fi stories. But WHAT A GREAT MIX!. And, of course, we were kids. And for that, the first trilogy changed our lives. Now we can't be surprised the same way but unconsciously we want to have that same feel of excitement we once had. So, some of you get disappointed because you expect too much from just a movie (and from a director that is not specially brilliant). But think with me for a minute. This movies can't be written only for Star Wars fans. They are expensive and they must get to the masses. They must be worth seeing for us, original Star Wars fans, and for the new adolescents, kids and grown ups that didn't specially liked the first trilogy. And we must not compare them with the original trilogy. I can only advice you all to go see this movie, relax and just enjoy it. It's plain perfect in entertainment. If you want plot or an intelligent movie, go see the any of the good old Fellini.
Crossroads (2002)
Thanks god my business is not acting!!
(Britney says...)... But wait a minute! My business is singing... Oh, no! What am i gonna do? Can't I do anything right? Undoubtly, this girl will go downhill as she grows up. Being beautiful may be enough to sell a couple of million records to mindless pre-teens, but it takes something else to last.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Good movie, not THAT good!
This is a good movie and a great adaptation of JRR Tolkien's book. But come on! is not even close to Star Wars or Raiders of the Lost Ark (just to mention fantasy films). I truly think that most 10's voters are truly influenced by their own fanaticism to the book. Great CGI (mainly for the outdoor scenes), good story line, not so well developed characters. The bottom line, good movie that keeps you entertained for 3 hours (not an easy goal to accomplish).
Dune (2000)
good movie
I saw this movie at once, since the DVD was edited on South America a couple of month ago. Almost 5 hours. That's long. But as a fan of Frank Herbert I must say I was rather pleased with the results. Ok, there were a few licenses taken and Alec Newman looked too old to play Paul. But... so what? Wake up people, this is a movie. And like any other novel adaptations it can't fit everybody's imagination. There will always be someone bitching about something they imagine it should look different. David Lynch's Dune was nothing like the novel (good movie, tough), this one is closer to it. But let's be faithful to ourselves: There's not one single movie based or adapted from a great novel that satisfy a single reader. You can always hear: "The movie is OK, but the book is great". 8 of 10. PS: The DVD is great. Full 5.1 surround. 1.78 aspect ratio.
Star Wars (1977)
What more can I say?
One of the best movies of all time. A classic for all time. The first movie I want my children to watch. The only complaint I have is that I STILL DON'T HAVE THE DVD!!! PLEASE GEORGE!!
The Others (2001)
This movie is scary
This is one of the best movies I have seen this year (if not the best). It's refreshing to see that good old suspense is not dead, but alive and well. No special effects, nor blood or gore. The director did a great job creating a chilling atmosphere and a growing pace that explodes at the end with an imaginative ending. I hope more South American directors were able to make this kind of intelligent movies.
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Great entertainment
This movie is plain fun. I liked the original movie, but the fact that the monkeys behaved like humans annoyed me. Chimps are really aggressive. Just as in this movie. Man, I love this new apes. They act like intelligent monkeys, not humans. The plot maybe somewhat empty, but it's not written to make you think but to entertain you. The ending is good, it's enough open to leave room for a sequel. Go see it and try not to think about the original movie. Have fun! 9/10
Charlie's Angels (2000)
This movie is really really boring
Oh, come on, people. This movie, even if it's not to take it seriously, it fails even to be stupid! It's not funny, it has no plot, the action scenes leave you with the feeling that you've already seen them somewhere else and the acting is below average. Thanks god that I rented the DVD, so I lost only $3.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
One of the best
This movie will be a classic. It's one of the best of all time. One piece of advice. If you haven't seen it, DON'T WATCH IT ON VIDEO. To experience this movie you'll need a full surround and a sub-woofer. So, try to watch it on a DTS or DD theater or try the DVD/DTS or DVD/5.1 (DTS is better).
Hanging Up (2000)
It's just about real life
I don't usually like this kind of movies. It's a strange mix between a girlie movie and a Woody Allen movie. But why did I like this one? Well.... maybe it's closer to Woody Allen. The thing is that reality is as simple as this movie. People relations are usually this way. I've seen the three sisters behavior in real life so many times that it surprised me. Does it matter if the father's disease is Alzheimer or if he had a stroke? No (we just need to know who he is and the fact that he is dying), even though the movie lets you know subtly (it is not Alzheimer). Because the movie is about real people and real relations and the rest is not important. Doesn't people fight and argue for stupid things? Brothers and sisters don't need a dark past to be apart. You don't need extreme characters to show how society works. Maybe it gets too close to reality and I believe that's why most people feel uncomfortable with it. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that Diane Keaton doubles Lisa Kudrow's age. One line about Walter Matthau. He REALLY reminded me of a close relative who died with Alzheimer, it was as real as it can get. Remarkable. Be warned that this movie is a drama with a few moments of comedy. I would give it 7 stars out of 10.
The Green Mile (1999)
Is it really so long?
This is a great movie. It's clearly the only one that's fighting with American Beauty for the Oscar. Sure is long. But come on, the best movies of all time were 3 hours long or so. The Godfather, The Deer Hunter, Apocalypsis Now, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, 2001, A Clockwork Orange, ..... When a movie has such character development as this one, it's easy to take 3 hours to complete. Who complains about this, surely will not like any other 3 hour movie and will probably prefer hi-tech, pre-chewed movies. 10 out of 10.
Last Man Standing (1996)
A fine violent movie
Sure, this isn't Kurosawa, but is an action movie and it works really well. I really feel that if you don't like (or know) one genre you shouldn't be making public comments on movies of such genre. The people who didn't like this movie probably didn't like 48 hours or any other Walter Hill movie. If one person loved 'Emma'or 'Pretty Woman' will probably hate 'Last man...' (I liked both, though. But I wouldn't comment on them). If I want character development or plot I'll surely look for Fellini , Bergman or Kurosawa. When you want action, Walter Hill is one of the best and if it is with Bruce Willis, better. So, if you want action, this picture is great! Abstain if you don't like violence in movies.
Event Horizon (1997)
Gore, blood and death ... in space
Yeah, this is a perfect gory movie. I believe is going to be a classic one day. Same kind as 'the evil death' or 'texas chainsaw massacre'. Lots of blood, crazy people, suspense and a couple of really surprising scenes. And the incredible claustrophobic feeling of 'Alien'. Horror detractors abstain, please.
