This long holiday weekend saw the releases of three major Oscar contenders. Call Me By Your Name had a sensational per screen average (101,000 per screen). Darkest Hour also showed its prosthetic Churchill face for a good opening ($44,000 per screen). And then there was Pixar's Coco, which easily trounced Justice League to take the #1 spot. Critics are raving and, more importantly, Latino critics are raving, too, as you can see at Remezcla and here at The Film Experience.
So let's do the box office report differently this weekend and look at this year's Animated Features...

Happy Mother's Day y'all. Are you taking your mom to the movies? Does your mom even go to movies? (My mom does not unless I'm visiting her so it happens about once a year).
In its second week Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 dipped below 50% but that's par for the course for blockbusters which are super frontloaded now. It still handily took the weekend making more than the two new wide releases combined (Snatched and King Arthur). In limited release the top new films were Lowriders (starring Demian Bichir and Eva Longoria) with a good per screen average and the sniper drama The Wall which risked a nearly wide opening to uncertain results. We'll see how word of mouth goes.

Give credit where it’s due: “The Fate of the Furious” had the best overseas opening for any film, ever — just above “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and far above “Jurassic World.” Since its overseas opening last Wednesday, it’s earned around $430 million. That’s great for Universal, and any weekend with a $100 million opening is a good thing. But beneath the headlines are some curious results that aren’t 100 percent positive.
The Top Ten
1. The Fate of the Furious (Universal) New – Cinemascore: A; Metacritic: 56; Est. budget: $250 million
$100,182,000 in 4,310 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $23,244; Cumulative: $100,182,000
2. The Boss Baby (20th Century Fox) Week 3 – Last weekend #1
$15,540,000 (-41%) in 3,743 theaters (-86); PTA: $4,152; Cumulative: $116,324,000
3. Beauty and the Beast (Disney) Week 5 – Last weekend #2
$13,634,000 (-42%) in 3,592 theaters (-377); PTA: $4,152; Cumulative: $454,650,000
4. Smurfs: The Lost Village (Sony) Week 2 – Last weekend #3
$6,500,000 (-51%) in 3,610 theaters (no change); PTA: $1,801; Cumulative: $24,728,000

Box OfficeThe real Lost Village for these iconic characters is Fanville.
My two-and-a-half-year-old daughter was watching TV yesterday when a Smurfs: The Lost Village commercial came on. “Trolls!” she shouted, mistaking the new movie about little blue creatures for the recent movie about little pink and orange and blue creatures. One bunch wears white hats, the other has crazy hair, but it’s easy to see how they could be confused, especially by a toddler. And she didn’t even see any footage of Gargamel, whose Smurf-consuming desires are akin to the Bergens and their taste for Trolls.
Did Trolls trump Smurfs, causing the latter to open much lower than initial expectations? The Lost Village had originally been projected for a $20m opening, if not slightly more. Then The Boss Baby became a hit last weekend, and predictions fell to $15m-$18m, the higher end of that range being what the live-action/CG hybrid The Smurfs 2 debuted...

Holdovers The Boss Baby and Beauty and the Beast are once again dominating at the weekend box office despite the entry of new family film Smurfs: The Lost Village, according to early Friday returns.
Projections show Smurfs 3 earning $3.5 million-$4.5 million on Friday for a muted opening in the $14 million-$15 million range, while Boss Baby and Beauty will battle for the top spot with $25 million or more. Box-office observers are divided as to whether Boss Baby will prevail, saying it is too early to call.

It’s hard to believe that The Smurfs first came out in the comics in 1958. Anyone who’s read those might recognize something in the new Smurfs: The Lost Village trailer that just dropped today. The director of the animated movie Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2) wanted to bring the original comic book look to the big screen. This will be The Smurfs third time in the live-action world and Asbury appears to be pulling out all the stops. The first two live-action films fared well abroad but didn’t do that well here in the U.S. The new Lost Village trailer seems
