Since the first sinister trailer for Antonio Campos’ adaptation of Donald Ray Pollock’s novel The Devil All the Time arrived, the film has caused quite a buzz. This is the latest Netflix original to land, a pitch black drama set in the Ohio town of Knockemstiff where the corrupt and the lost intertwine in a mix of horror and tragedy. One of the standouts from the trailer is the incredible A-list cast brought together for this ensemble piece. Robert Pattinson plays a predator preacher, Bill Skarsgard a damaged war veteran, Sebastian Stan a dirty cop and Jason Clarke and Riley Keough husband and wife serial killers.
“I wasn’t like Nick Fury showing up,” laughs Campos when he chats to us about building his cast. “It’s a very long drawn out process.” Though he has two actual Avengers in his line up, this is a portrait of villains...

One look at the image above and you’d be forgiven for expecting the accompanying film to be something along the lines of 8Mm 3: Shaving Leather, but looks can often be deceiving. A Beginners Guide to Snuff is actually a dark comedy, and this synopsis should clarify if it’s dark or comedic enough for your own personal tastes. Mitchell Altieri (The Hamiltons, The Violent Kind, Holy Ghost People) channels the filmmakers of the ’70s and ’80s in this homage to splatter exploitation films. Two brothers, desperate to break into the world of television and film, decide to enter a horror movie contest. And what could be more horrifying than the elusive snuff film? Of course, they won’t actually kill someone on camera—all they’re going to do is kidnap an actress, torture her, and make her think she’s going to die. What could possibly go wrong? Charming...

Director: Mitchell Altieri. Writers: Kevin Artigue, Joe Egender, Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores. Cast: Emma Greenwell, Joe Egender, Brendan McCarthy, Cameron Richardson and Don Harvey. Holy Ghost People is a dramatic thriller from the Butcher Brothers: Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores. Mostly known for their horror features, the Butcher Bros. have created a spiritual thriller in their latest title. Holy Ghost People is primarily told through the eyes of Charlotte (Emma Greenwell) and her search for her sister, Liz. Charlotte's obvious strength and vulnerability create a complex character as director Altieri captures all of the tension onscreen in a compelling manner. Holy Ghost People is one of the best small thrillers this film fan has seen so far this year. The story for the film involves Charlotte's search for her drug-addicted sister, Liz. Liz was last seen heading for the Church of the One Accord. So, Charlotte enlists the help of an ex-Marine,...

For Holy Ghost People, co-writer/producer/star Joe Egender successfully donned many hats during production on the southern gothic thriller with long-time collaborator and the film’s director, Mitchell Altieri. The film premiered last year during the 2013 SXSW Film Festival and recently arrived in limited theaters and is also currently available on VOD and iTunes courtesy of XLrator Media.
Daily Dead recently chatted with Egender about his experiences working on the film and with Altieri, his thoughts on Brother Billy as a villain and much more.
Thanks so much for taking time to chat today. I really enjoyed Holy Ghost People last year at SXSW and I’m glad to see it getting released now.
Joe Egender: Thanks so much. We’ve done a lot with the film since Austin and we’ve been very fortunate to have had a lot of great responses to the film so far.

With HBO.s True Detective currently winning over critics and audiences, along with Mitchell Altieri.s Holy Ghost People and Ti West.s The Sacrament's recent and upcoming releases, it.s clearly a popular time for religious cult thrillers. Jason Blum.s microbudget genre film mill Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures recently performed the ancient ritual to hop on that bandwagon with The Veil, and American Horror Story.s Lily Rabe is the latest to sign on, joining the previously cast Jessica Alba and Thomas Jane. This is excellent news, as Rabe was consistently one of the most enjoyable parts about these last two seasons of the FX anthology series. Directed by Gridiron Gang filmmaker Phil Joanou, The Veil has a foundation in the religious cult called Heaven.s Veil, whose members all simultaneously committed suicide decades ago. In the present day, a documentarian (Alba) wants to discover the...

Is there a prequel to the new indie “Holy Ghost People” that we should see beforehand? Maybe a television show? It’s the only reason we can possibly engender any sentiment for the overfamiliarity shown to certain characters at the start of the film. The very first scene of this southern gothic thriller finds a man disoriented on a couch in his trailer, nursing bruises and a hangover. When he is on his two feet, he stumbles into a dark-haired girl cavalierly getting out of the shower, his shower, with the door open. When she teases him, there’s playful erotic heat, and it feels like the opening to a classic noir. This thread of temptation between the two of them is roughly abandoned as we learn their stories. He’s Wayne (Brendan McCarthy), a former soldier, now a broke and alcoholic nowhere man who wakes on unfamiliar furniture. And...

For the first hour or so, Mitchell Altieri's Holy Ghost People is a tense backwoods thriller centered around a small charismatic Christian community somewhere in the Appalachian mountains. Once that hour is up, though, things turn a bit wacky and the film devolves into something significantly less tense and more simplistic. A film is only as good as its ending, and Holy Ghost People really had me going up until the ludicrous finale that conjures memories of some other great films, just rehashed and with less style. What went wrong? Just enough. However, there is more to the film than just the last fifteen minutes, which is perhaps why that last section is so frustrating. Holy Ghost People begins in a trailer, naturally, where the...

Faith can be viewed judgmentally from those not associated with religion, but for those practicing, it’s as normal as anything else they do throughout the day. Belief in a higher power, from whatever religious foundation one may claim, requires a large amount of blind faith. Though there are some religious groups that claim healing powers and the ability to perform miracles all meant to propose visual validation of faith.
Holy Ghost People, directed by one half of the Butcher Brothers, Mitchell Altieri, explores the more extreme approaches of faith with a film focused on a young girl looking for her sister she believes has been kidnapped by a snake handling religious group. Altieri, assisted by some convincing performances, crafts a thriller that is blemished by structural issues within the narrative though still surprisingly feels wholly authentic.

Just a few weeks ago, Mitchell Altieri's (one half of The Butcher Brothers) Holy Ghost People (review) celebrated its world premiere at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival.
Starring Emma Greenwell, Joe Egender, Brendan McCarthy, Cameron Richardson and Don Harvey, Holy Ghost People follows a young girl named Charlotte (Greenwell) who enlists the help of an ex-Marine (McCarthy) in locating her missing sister, who last contacted her while living on a religious compound tucked away in the Appalachian Mountains.
Holy Ghost People was co-written by Altieri, Phil Flores (the other half of The Butcher Brothers), Egender and Kevin Artigue. Dread Central recently chatted with both Altieri and Flores about their latest collaboration and their experiences working with their cast in the mountains of Tennessee. For the first hour or so Mitchell Altieri's Holy Ghost People is a tense backwoods thriller centered around a small charismatic Christian community somewhere in the Appalachian mountains. However, there is more to the film than just the last fifteen minutes, which is perhaps why that last section is so frustrating.Holy Ghost People begins in a trailer, naturally, where the beaten...

It was only a matter of time before the filmmaking team known as "The Butcher Brothers" would drop the slightly silly moniker and start crediting themselves as normal guys, and it only seems fitting that Mitch Altieri and Phil Flores would choose to do it with a film like Holy Ghost People. The duo has shown some skill and (better yet) improvement with each successive movie -- The Hamiltons, The Violent Kind, The Thompsons (and yes I left out April Fools Day to be kind) -- but their latest is easily their most complete, cohesive, and compelling thriller yet.
The simple gritty film works as both a dramatic piece and a thriller at the same time, and tonally it seems to borrow a little from the early indie films of David Gordon Green, which is meant as a compliment to all involved. At its best moments Holy Ghost People provides...

Usually known as one half of horror duo The Butcher Brothers (along with filmmaker Phil Flores), Mitchell Altieri comes to Austin with his new slow burning drama "Holy Ghost People," set among the snake handling churches of the Appalachian Mountains. What it's about: "Holy Ghost People" is about absolute faith -- the strength it can bring and the evil it can inspire. About the filmmaker: I started film-making at a young age. I was inspired by offbeat films like Over The Edge, The Wanderers and anything David Lynch. This is my first venture outside the horror genre in a handful of years. I didn't start in horror but always loved dark stories. After shooting my last film "The Thompsons" in the UK, I wanted to get back to my roots and tell a gritty, American tale. "Holy Ghost People"was that story I wanted to tell. It plays like an old Southern Gothic novel.

"I was wondering if I could join your church." What in the heck? A trailer has debuted for a film playing at SXSW this month called Holy Ghost People, directed by one of "The Butcher Brothers." It's kind of a wilder cult horror-thriller about a girl, played by Emma Greenwell, who goes looking for her sister and ends up at the "Church of One Accord" in the mountains, a snake handling creep town where shit gets crazy real quick. I can't even call this a crazier Martha Marcy May Marlene because it looks like it goes different places, but damn. Also stars Joe Egender, Brendan McCarthy, Cameron Richardson, Don Harvey. Watch the first SXSW promo trailer for Mitchell Altieri's Holy Ghost People, originally from Deadline: Synopsis from the SXSW line-up: On the trail of her missing sister, Charlotte (Emma Greenwell) enlists the help of Wayne (Brendan McCarthy), an ex-Marine and alcoholic,...

Mitchell Altieri (one half of The Butcher Brothers, The Hamiltons) sits solo in the director's chair for Holy Ghost People, a new thriller "wild world of Appalachian snake handling churches." The film is debuting at SXSW next month and Deadline landed the trailer which you'll find after the jump.
In this psychological thriller, nineteen-year old Charlotte enlists the help of alcoholic ex-Marine Wayne to find her estranged sister who has gone missing deep in the Appalachian Mountains. Their search leads them to the Church of One Accord and an enigmatic snake-handling preacher named Brother Billy, who’s devoted congregation of outcasts knowingly risk injury or death seeking salvation in the Holy Ghost. What Wayne and Charlotte uncover during their time on the mountain - about themselves and the nature of faith - will shake them to their core, as the mystery of Charlotte’s sister and her fate unravels…

In the last year and a half, there have been three fairly remarkable films centered around cults, both religious and not: Paul Thomas Anderson.s The Master, Zal Batmanglij.s Sound of My Voice, and Sean Durkin.s Martha Marcy May Marlene. While each of these films presented its subject matter from a unique perspective, each also remained clouded in ambiguity, leaving the final judgment up to the viewers who spent the entire movie calling bullshit anytime one of the cult leaders would speak. Where is the justice? Judging from the first trailer for Mitchell Altieri.s Holy Ghost People, courtesy of Deadline, justice might be settled up somewhere in the Appalachian mountain region. In the film, Emma Greenwell (True BloodShameless) hires a scruffy ex-Marine played by Brendan McCarthy (True Blood, Justified) to help her find her sister Liz (Buffy Charlet) who may have been kidnapped by a snake-handling church...

Writer-director-producer Mitchell Altieri is best known as one half of The Butcher Brothers - a name he shares with Phil Flores - but he leaves his regular nom de plume behind, along with the strict horror focus of the Butchers' work, with his upcoming SXSW selected feature Holy Ghost People. In some ways the shift in credited name is a bit surprising as Flores and regular Butcher collaborator Joe Egender are very much present in the film, but in other ways it makes perfect sense. Because while The Butcher Brothers have become something of a brand, brands can be restrictive when you want to do something a little bit different. And this very much is different, though existing fans will still find plenty of darkness...

South by Southwest (SXSW) is just one of many film festivals, we here at Sound On Sight cover yearly. The fest, which takes place every spring in Austin, Texas, began in 1987, and has continued to grow in size every year. The fest announced the first wave of films back in early January, and the lineup included some highly anticipated films such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Evil Dead, Downloaded and Spring Breakers. Now the full lineup has been announced, and it just might be one of the best lineups the festival has ever programmed.
SXSW takes place March 8-16 in Austin Texas. Here are just some of the films we are excited about.
Narrative Feature Competition – This year’s 8 films were selected from 1,191 submissions. Each film is a World Premiere.

Some of the best films of the 2012/2013 calender year from Richard Linklater, Harmony Korine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Bujalski, Jeff Nichols, David Gordon Green, Shane Carruth and Joshua Oppenheimer are among the headliner names for the 2013 edition of the South by Southwest Film Festival. With a little over 100 plus film line-up (a whopping 2000+ titles were submitted), almost 70 are world premieres: there is the highly anticipated sophomore film (that has been on our radar since it first went into production) with M. Blash’s (The Wait), Joe Swanberg who makes SXSW his second home will premiere Drinking Buddies, veteran indie filmmaker John Sayles saddles in with Go For Sisters, and rounding out the Narrative Spotlight section we’ve got The Bounceback from Bryan Poyser, Loves Her Gun from Geoff Marslett along with titles we thought might break into Park City, but found an Austin home instead with Jacob Vaughan’s Milo and...
