It first premiered at TIFF 2023 last year, with stops at the London, Philadelphia, AFI Fest, and Göteborg Film Festivals. Told by the pioneering women who participated, this is the extraordinary story of the 1971 Women's Soccer World Cup, a tournament witnessed by record crowds that has been written out of sporting history – until now. This is the entirely true story of the 1971 Women’s World Cup, which was held in Mexico City and witnessed by more than 100,000 fans. This landmark tournament was dismissed by FIFA, of course, which should be no surprise to anyone familiar with this sordid sports organization. The doc film features interviews with various players who participated in the World Cup in 1971 and many others. Executive produced by Venus & Serena Williams.

The champagne may be flowing at the kickoff for the 27th Annual Sonoma International Film Festival – for more reasons than one.
This year’s event in California’s wine country will open with the U.S. premiere of Widow Clicquot, directed by Thomas Napper, a narrative feature about the Grande Dame of Champagne. Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired U.S. rights to Copa 71, a documentary about the pioneering “Unofficial Women’s World Cup” that created a sensation in 1971 but has since been virtually erased from history. Rachel Ramsay and James Erskine (Billie) directed the film, which is executive produced by tennis greats Serena and Venus Williams and soccer star Alex Morgan.
Greenwich plans a summer theatrical release of the documentary, a co-production of New Black Films, Dogwoof, and Westbrook Studios.
“In August 1971, soccer teams from England, Argentina, Mexico, France, Denmark, and Italy gathered at Mexico City’s sun-drenched Azteca Stadium,” notes a synopsis of the film. “The scale of the tournament was monumental: lavish sponsorship, extensive TV coverage, merchandise on every street corner, and crowds of over 100,000 roaring fans turn this historic stadium into a cauldron of noise match after match.”

“Copa 71,” the Serena Williams-produced documentary that aims to shed light on the 1971 controversially unsanctioned Women’s World Cup, will have its New York premiere at the 14th annual Athena Film Festival, which will return on Feb. 29 and run through March 3.
The festival, hosted by Columbia University’s Barnard College, will feature a lineup of film screenings, conversations and other programming poised at “amplifying women’s leadership through storytelling around women’s sports, Indigenous perspectives, reproductive justice, disability representation and more,” according to the statement.

Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival has announced a new batch of mostly international titles set to launch in its Festival Favorites and Treasures strands, including the international premiere of U.S. actor-turned-director Jennifer Esposito’s New York City mob drama “Fresh Kills.”
Inspired by Esposito’s upbringing in Staten Island, “Fresh Kills” – in which Esposito co-stars with Annabella Sciorra – bowed stateside at the Tribeca Festival in June.
Other international talents peppered throughout the Red Sea sections likely to be making the trek to Saudi include Anna Kendrick with her period crime drama “Woman of the Hour”; David Oyelowo, producer of high-profile soccer doc “Allihopa: The Dalkurd Story”; Ewan McGregor and Ellen Burstyn for Swedish director Niclas Larsson’s “Mother, Couch”; Serena and Venus Williams as executive producers of “Copa 71,” the story of the groundbreaking 1971 Women’s World Cup; and French writer-director Laetitia Colombani with her drama “The Braid.

The ninth annual program runs November 2 through 5 in San Francisco, California, screening 10 features, and two shorts programs, while hosting a tribute to late filmmaker Julia Reichert, the beloved “American Factory” co-director who died last year. Sixty-six titles have been added to the program for the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) as the event unveils the Luminous and Frontlight sections, in addition to titles for live cinema section IDFA on Stage, experimental art section Paradocs and queer cinema section Contagious & Queer. It’s odd to think that there once existed a time when the mere idea of women participating in a World Cup match was, to say the least, seen by some as farfetched; indeed, as the 1960s faded into a new decade, women who wanted to play professional football weren’t just frowned upon, it was not allowed. One would think that a somewhat secretive World Cup featuring team rosters that were 100% female taking place at this time would make enough of a sound that history would look back upon such an event with the sort of reverence generally reserved for the most outstanding achievements in the world of sports.

In Thea Sharrock’s 1920s-set “Wicked Little Letters,” Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley play neighbors who get on each other’s nerves in a small English town where residents start receiving anonymous, expletive-laden letters. Sharrock sees parallels in the film’s theme with today’s social media trolling replacing poison-pen letters.

For nearly half a century, being right felt wrong to Carol Wilson. A member of the British soccer squad that participated in the Women’s World Cup in Mexico in 1971, Wilson uses the doc “Copa 71” to describe how she “remembered thinking I’m never going to see anything like this again.” In James Erskine and Rachel Ramsay’s brisk and rousing history of the tournament, few can say that they’ve even seen it when footage of the event was buried in archives for years, all but erased from collective memory. Why? The doc suggests the reasons were rooted in both misogyny and economics, seeing as how the Federation Int’l Football Association disapproved of the games as a rare major soccer event they had no control over — at least, not until starting their own women’s tournament in 1991.

“1991,” Chastain says with confidence. She was, after all, there.
Following recent documentary convention, Ramsay hands Chastain an iPad and presses play. Chastain sees grainy footage of a packed stadium.
“It’s a men’s football match?” Chastain asks. Players come out on the pitch. They’re women.
“What?” Chastain says with a smile. Incredulous, she asks Ramsay what year the footage was from. It’s 1971.
Chastain ponders, “Why didn’t I know about this? It makes me very happy and quite infuriated, to be honest with you.”
It’s a great moment. It’s also a contrived moment, one of the few in Ramsay and James Erskine’s terrifically satisfying documentary, which thrives not on “Gotcha!” surprises or affected reenactments, but on a wonderful simplicity.

A documentary about women who accused Louis C.K. of sexual harassment and the consequences those accusations had on their careers is one of 22 documentaries from 12 countries heading to the 2023 Toronto Intl. Film Festival.

The docu titled “Sorry/Not Sorry,” previously intended for Showtime, is one of several films in TIFF’s nonfiction program that focus on women who have been unjustly ignored for their achievements. TIFF Docs opening night film, “Copa 71,” tells the story of the lost legacy of a 1971 international women’s soccer tournament that had record setting crowds in Mexico City but was largely erased from sports history. The film’s producers include Venus and Serena Williams as well as soccer super star Alex Morgan. This year, non-fiction titles will be front and center at the Toronto International Film Festival, as many writers and actors will not be on hand due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Opening night at the 2023 festival brings a documentary world premiere, Rachel Ramsay and James Erskine’s “Copa 71” (seller: Dogwoof), about an historic international women’s soccer tournament lost to sports history.
