Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What are your winter holiday season viewing habits (that are not for work)? Do you have traditional go-to shows or movies? Are you looking forward to anything in particular?
Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR
As I have written in the past, I’m not the kind of critic who loves holiday specials. Too often, they’re too hokey, too commercial, too weird (yes, Bill Murray, I still don’t get “A Very Murray Christmas”) or, in the case of countless Hallmark Channel movies, way too white. But I do have a few holiday media traditions, starting with my Spotify Holiday Tunes playlist, which gets fired up as...

Netflix’s latest offering is a true nightmare before Christmas — and that’s a good thing. “El Camino Christmas,” available to stream on Friday, Dec. 8, tells the story of a drifter (played by “Fifty Shades of Grey”‘s Luke Grimes) whose arrival in a sleepy California town sets off a chain of chaotic events, culminating in a fatal hostage situation at a liquor store. As the madness unfolds, countless lives — including those of a single mother (played by Letterkenny’s Michelle Mylett) and her young, introverted son — are changed forever.
In case it wasn’t already clear, this isn’t your typical comedy — and it’s definitely not your typical Christmas movie. The unconventional story, which also stars Dax Shepard and Vincent D’Onofrio as a pair of bumbling cops with absolutely no business wielding pistols, takes pride in bucking conventions at every turn, of which there are many.

Look, I enjoyed Justice League. It was a fun and entertaining film. But, there's one major aspect of the film that bugged the living hell out of me! It was Superman's CGI upper lip!
When Henry Cavill was brought in for reshoots with Joss Whedon, he had to grow out a mustache for his role in the next Mission: Impossible film. Unfortunately, he was contractually obligated not to shave it, so Warner Bros. had to spend a shit-ton of money to remove it digitally.
It was even more unfortunate that it turned out to be some of the worst CGI in a major big-budget film that I've seen in a long time. As much as I enjoyed how the character of Superman was handled, that CGI upper lip was super freakin' distracting, creepy looking, and laughably bad. When previously talking about reshooting his Superman scenes with his mustache, Cavill told...

The three “Bad Moms” are back in “A Bad Moms Christmas,” just 16 months after the original film hit theaters — and critics are panning the “rush job” production, saying it misses more than it hits. “The Xmas edition of ‘Bad Moms’ is Ok if not laugh-out-loud, culminating in a grind-and-twerk foursome with a mall Santa,” TheWrap’s film critic Robert Abele wrote in his review. “Ho ho ho-hum. But then the slo-mo gets trotted out again for a dodgeball free-for-all featuring all the families at a Sky Zone trampoline center, and it sinks in just how threadbare the movie is with.

If you’ve read anything about “Die Hard” online in the last several years, it’s probably that the action classic starring Bruce Willis is actually a Christmas movie. The authors of a “A Die Hard Christmas: The Illustrated Holiday Classic” surely agree, as the children’s book written by comedian Doogie Horner and illustrated by Jj Harrison reframes the movie through the lens of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

Featuring such choice lines as “John McClane missed his wife; things just weren’t the same since Holly had moved west and changed her last name” and “A truck had pulled up, and who should disembark, but fourteen men whose intentions were dark,” the 32-page tome is an age-appropriate introduction to the film for kiddos who may be too young to hear its most famous line spoken aloud.

Though some people may be unaware, there’s an awards ceremony held every year to honor the true heroes behind our favorite films: the marketing team. That’s right, the Golden Trailer Awards hand out statues to those who work tirelessly putting together trailers, commercials and posters for hundreds of releases each and every year. And not just in film, but video games and TV, too. It’s an incredibly comprehensive ceremony as well, with awards for a whopping 116 categories. Yes, 116 – though not all of those are given out on stage.
The nominations for the 18th annual edition, set to go down on June 6th at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, are now in and it seems that Warner Bros. is leading the pack amongst the various studios, scoring an impressive 68 nods in total, 11 of which come from The Lego Batman Movie – the most of any title to be nominated.

Let us forego our consideration of the green unicorn problem and, obeying the dictates of the season, direct our attention to that jolly old elf, Santa Claus.
First, we’ll follow that which is not exactly required but is nonetheless highly recommended and seek to link the elf to comic books, this allegedly being a column devoted to the aforementioned magazines.
So: is Santa a comics character?
Yes and no. Research indicates that he and his cohort of elves and reindeer have never been awarded their own regular title. You could never find, tucked into your Christmas stocking, something like “The Adventures of Santa Claus” or if the comic was published by Disney, “Santa’s Funnies and Stories” or, if it appeared in the 60s and bore a Marvel colophon, maybe “The Stupendous Santa.” Santa has made – I’m taking a shot in the dark here – tens of thousands of...

Die Hard Screens This Friday Night, December 23rd, at Midnight at The Hi-Pointe Theater ( 1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63117). Admission is only $5.
Die Hard (1988) is one of the best and most iconic action films from Hollywood. Bruce Willis starred as NYPD Officer John McClane, who tries to save his wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) and several of her co-workers and friends after being taken hostage by German terrorist Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman )and his henchmen during a Christmas party at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles.
Willis’ witty and deadpan delivery personality, coupled with his never-say-die attitude and relentless attacks on the villains made him a force to be reckoned with, giving us a tough yet comedic performance. Most of Die Hard takes place inside the Nakatomi Plaza, where you will find all the heart-pounding action as Gruber terrorizes his hostages and...

I've got an entertaining Metal Gear Solid fan-made film for you to watch today called "Snake and Ghost Save Christmas." As the title suggests, the two characters re-team to use their deadly skills to save Christmas, and Santa is captured. There's a lot of action, humor, and cheesy dialogue that I'm sure fans will enjoy. I love that as Santa keeps his jolly "Ho Ho Ho" attitude through the intensity of being captured and extracted and that he gets surprisingly brutal! ...

Completing the trifecta of John Ostrander related items suitable for putting under the Christmas tree, today we have the Suicide Squad movie now out on DVD, Blu-Ray, and assorted other platforms that I don’t understand. The movie came out in August and now, just in time for Christmas, it’s out for your home theater.
This may be a trickier recommendation than my previous two because, although the movie did very well in the theaters, not everyone was a fan. In fact, some hated it. Me, I loved it – but I admit to a slight bias.
The version I got was the extended version with the bells and whistles – extended scenes and bonus features (which I’ll get to in a minute). I’m not always crazy about extended scenes or deleted scenes; more often than not I can see why they were cut. Although there was a scene...

Ho Ho Ho! Toss me that football, yo!
With a night mostly filled with specials, comedy, and hour-long dramas that the traditional viewing public has never tuned into, football was all anybody cared about.
And that, still, wasn't anything to crow about.
NBC managed to lose an entire ratings point from the previous week for NFL Thursday Night Football and still win the week with a hefty 3.7 for the evening and about 12 million viewers throughout.
ABC took a chance on repeats of Toy Story that Time Forgot, which remained forgotten with a 0.8 and Shrek the Halls, which did a tick better with 0.9.
View Slideshow: ABC Cheat Sheet: What Will Be Canceled?
At 9, the Great American Baking Show, featuring some really ugly flat, misshapen fruity bread drew 0.9.

This 8-inch tall statue of Boba Fett bringing Jabba the Hutt a gift-wrapped Han Solo in Carbonite is the perfect Star Wars holiday decoration. Fett's got his deadly candy cane gun, a bow on his head, and everything!
Boba Fett has arrived this holiday season, and he's packing an extra special gift for Jabba! It's classic Fett with a few holiday twists, such as a thermal detonator ornament at his feet, a candy cane blaster, and a big red bow around his captured bounty. That's sure to make Jabba say "Ho ho ho!" (But really, what doesn't get Jabba to say that?)
Measuring about 8 inches tall, this resin tablepiece is a tongue-in-cheek nod to the end of The Empire Strikes Back that you can sneak into your family's Christmas display. Nothing says "Happy Holidays!" like getting a Christmas bonus for turning in such a notorious bounty as Han Solo!

When I consider The Comedian, I’m hard-pressed to articulate just what the movie is. It feels as though over the course of the production, whatever point it was supposed to have got lost, perhaps in the transition from one director or screenplay draft to another. What’s left is an accretion of movie stars and name comedians orbiting a plotless New York travelogue starring Robert De Niro.
De Niro plays Jackie Burke, an aged comedian on hard times, best known for a hacky sitcom he headlined decades ago. After beating up a heckler at a show and spending 30 days in jail, he makes a stab at rebuilding his career, and at the same time romances Harmony (Leslie Mann), a fellow parolee. The various incidences which loosely constitute a story arise from one or both of these threads, as well as an abortive subplot about Jackie reconnecting with his brother...

Nothing gets my jollies jostled like a good holiday horror flick, but Red Christmas falls short of being the next killer yuletide classic. Twisted ideologies are present – along with an aggressive socio-political message (like most good B-Movies carry) – yet execution is more “ho-hum” than “Ho Ho Ho!” There’s surely a demented likability to this Australian family vacation gone awry, but this is a low, Low-budget affair – and it shows. In the cinematography, performances and special effects, it definitely, definitely shows.
Dee Wallace stars as a proud mother named Diane, whose only wish is for all of her closest family to gather and celebrate Christmas together (a wish that’s granted). There’s predictable sisterly banter (Sarah Bishop as Suzy, Janis McGavin as Ginny), drunken silliness, delectable food, plus Uncle Joe (Geoff Morrell) double-fisting his flask and a rolled joint. All in all, it’s a fairly expected holiday party – until a cloaked,...

Jason from Mnpp here, wishing you and yours a Ha Ha Happy Holidays with a Ho Ho Ho in your heart -- since it's Christmas Week I figured what better way to celebrate the festive mood than with the hilarious and heartfelt brand new Christmas classic, right up there with Batman Returns and Eyes Wide Shut, that is Sean Baker's Tangerine. Like Keiran argued recently my favorite character in the film is also Alexandra (played by a lovely Mya Taylor), but for "Beauty vs Beast" purposes its gotta be Sin-dee (the very funny Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) versus her pimp-snatching rival and "real fish girl" Dinah (Mickey O'Hagan's hilarious performance should be getting more attention too)...

Merry Christmas, Flash fans!
The holiday season was in full swing in Central City this week, complete with festive sweaters, family drama, and unwanted gifts. Of course, this being The Flash, the latter two involved an unknown son turning up, and Santa handing out bombs. Ho ho ho.
Christmas is a time when you often see people you haven’t for a while, and this episode reintroduced both Weather Wizard and The Trickster, while also giving us our first look at Wally West, some developments in two relationships, and the reveal of just what Zoom’s plan is.
This was the last speedster action we’ll get of 2015, and it capped what has been an absolutely stellar year with an episode that was fun, crazy, and left a lot to be explored and questions to be answered when Season 2 picks back up again early next year.

No. Last Christmas, we put on what we thought was a joyous screening of The Muppet Christmas Carol at the Electric Cinema in Birmingham. It was a singalong screening, with a very confusing song sheet. And we've been asked ever since when we'll be doing it again.
The answer? On Sunday 20th December, at 10.30am.

Whether you like it or not, Die Hard 6 is happening. What's worse, it's going to be a prequel and a sequel at the same time, which means we need a fresh-faced actor to play a young John McClane.
With the original Die Hard set in 1988 and Die Hard 6 set (in part) in 1979 - get ready for McClane as a rookie New York cop - we're looking for someone in their early 20s. Or are we?
Prepare yourself for some of the silliest casting suggestions ever made as we point out how Bruce Willis's John McClane really is a one-of-a-kind motherf**ker.
1. Joseph Gordon Levitt
Because of Looper, where with the help of a lot of silly putty - read: genuinely impressive prosthetics - he played a younger version of Bruce Willis. In short: he's done it before, so he can do it again.
2. Jai Courtney

Ho ho ho! David Letterman is officially retired. The former Late Show host was spotted out in New York City on Sunday, Sept. 27, sporting a thick white beard. The usually clean-shaven 68-year-old was enjoying a casual stroll with his 11-year-old son, Henry. The legendary talk show host, who was on the air for over 33 years, bid farewell to the gig on May 20, passing the torch to comedian Stephen Colbert, whose revamped Late Show premiered earlier this month. "Thanks for finally proving men can be funny," [...]...

A.k.a. Point Breakin' 2: Extreme Boogaloo. Well, actually the movie is a remake and not a sequel, but you get it: This movie is extreme as hell. It makes a commercial for Mountain Dew look like a commercial for seltzer. The film comes out on Christmas Day, because if you think about it, Santa was the first extreme athlete: Extreme Sled-Flying, brah! Ho ho ho, brah!

Ho ho ho, now I have...a reboot? Yes, Fox has announced plans for a Die Hard reboot, and Ryan Gosling has been tapped to play John "Yippee-ki-yay, Mother Russia" McClane. So much for Die Hard 6 (working title Die Hardest), I guess. Additionaly, sources tell Deadline that it will be a straight-up remake of the classic action movie, meaning McClane will once again find himself at the wrong place (Nakatomi Plaza) at the wrong time (Christmas Eve), and Hans Gruber will be the...

2014 has been one wonderful year in Bollywood and our Bollywood stars had shared many things with their fans on Twitter. Let’s take a look at the best tweets of the year!
Anushka Sharma’s open letter
Anushka Sharma decided to use the social network site Twitter to share her open letter about a rumour which was continually circling the web: has Anushka gone under the knife? The answer is clearly no.
This open letter got published just after the actor’s appearance on Koffee With Karan. Many people started tweeting jokes and memes about her lips. The actor explained that the only reason for this was the make-up she’d been using to shoot one of her upcoming movies Bombay Velvet.
We think that the idea of sharing this open letter is pretty courageous for Anushka who could have stayed silent all the way.

A generous mystery man has made the holiday season a little brighter for employees of two Massachusetts coffee shops. A man wearing a cowboy hat walked into Marylou's in Hyannis on Saturday and handed the worker behind the counter 15 envelopes, each containing a crisp $100 bill. Manager Victoria Grandy tells the Cape Cod Times "Merry Christmas" was printed in red on the front of each envelope. Workers didn't recognize the man as a regular, but one employee said he resembled Santa Claus. A man, believed to be the same person, but this time wearing a ball cap, on Monday handed over...

You want to celebrate the holidays, but want to do it a little differently? Cinelinx presents this list of our favorite non-traditional holiday films.
It’s a fact. TV networks love the holiday season. It’s their chance to program endless Christmas Story reruns and James Bond marathons. More importantly, it’s a time when the whole family is at home and sitting down in front of the TV. Let’s say you’re tired of the normal selection of holiday films that cycle throughout the day on TV. You’re tired of hearing “Every time a bell rings an angel gets its wings!”. You’ve had enough of Macaulay Culkin’s self-defense antics, and Ralphie just maybe deserves to get his tongue stuck to that pole. You are very familiar with how many sizes too small the Grinch’s heart is, and maybe Frosty the snowman is just another migraine waiting to happen.

Aaron Paul is an entrepreneur with a vision to change Christmas. (In that minimalist way people are entrepreneurs nowadays, at least.) Last week, he unveiled a semi-rip-off of the Yo app, called Yb, a.k.a. Yo, Bitch! It's essentially Paul's way of letting you call your friends "bitch," à la Breaking Bad's Jesse Pinkman. "I’m really just trying to give the public what they want," Paul told Mashable. The app also was updated today — yep, for Christmastime — so you can access a holiday pack (Hanukkah and Kwanzaa also included) that features such inspired greetings as "Feliz Navidad, Bitch!" and "Ho Ho Ho, Bitch!" in William Shatner's voice, and "I'm Santa, Bitch!" If you have an iPhone, you can download the app and ditch your stuffy Christmas cards now. Otherwise, Yb for Android should roll out in early 2015.

It's happening !! #XMascardselfie#missingonlyoneveryimportantfamilymember# Una foto publicada por Diane Kruger (@dianekrugerperso) el Nov 11, 2014 at 3:46 Pst Ho ho ho! Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson wasted no time getting into the Christmas spirit. The longtime couple shared a Christmas card selfie a day before Thanksgiving last week in which they wear matching Santa hats and tinsel. "It's happening!! #XMascardselfie#missingonlyoneveryimportantfamilymember," the Troy actress wrote — seemingly referring to their beloved but missing-in-action cat Hobbes. Last month Kruger, 38, shared a close-up snap of their kitty with the caption: "I wish [...]...

The Santa Clause is 20 years old today—and while the series spawned a trilogy of family-friendly holiday films, we can't forget the franchise's dark origins. Tim Allen's Scott Calvin becomes Santa Claus by accidentally causing the original St. Nick to fall to his doom. Sure, the film pushes a "seeing is believing" message and includes plenty of warm and fuzzy holiday cheer—but it still starts off with the death of Santa Claus. The Santa Clause isn't the only movie to put a dark spin on the holiday season; there's a long and storied cinematic history of strange, bleak,...

As an added surprise at the end of this evening's Doctor Who finale, Death In Heaven, the BBC premiered the first trailer for this year's Christmas special. It felt like the kind of tease Russell T Davies used to sew in at the end of his series runs.
In this case, there was no Titanic crashing through the Tardis. Instead, Santa came knocking, in the guise of Mr Nick Frost. And in case you missed the trailer, here's your first look at this year's festive episode....

“Now I have a machine gun. Ho ho ho.”
This is what action movies are all about. Die Hard (1988) starred Bruce Willis as New York officer John McClane, a cop who gets trapped in a high-rise in La when terrorists come to steal a substantial sum from the building’s safe so McClane single-handedly takes them on. Although the film’s action scenes are great (especially the classic one involving McClane jumping out of the building holding onto a fire hose), it is the interactions between McClane and Sergeant Al Powell (Reginald VelJohnson) and villain Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) that made the movie what it really is.
Even four sequels later, John McClane ‘s popularity is indelibly linked to his vulnerability: unlike Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger, who walked out of their movies with no scratches and a pack of dead bodies behind them, Willis leaves the scene bruised and battered (in one installment,...
