Three diverse films that Tribeca is bringing to audiences everywhere have been honored as critics' picks on Criticwire's mid-year report on the Best Indie Movies of 2012, published today on Indiewire. We think they are pretty great too! 'Like Die Hard meets 24 by way of Taken' (slashfilm), Sleepless Night is a frenetic French thriller that takes place over the course of one night in a labyrinthine nightclub. At its core is one father's desperate attempt to save his son from a mob of drug-dealing gangsters. It's as exciting as it sounds! In Booker's Place: A Mississippi Story, director Raymond De Felitta revisits a civil rights documentary made by his father Frank in the 1960s. Using two families as parallel storylines, the intimate portrait raises the question: Over the past fifty years, how much progress has the South really made? Side By Side takes a look at the current realities of digital filmmaking.

"Youths gathered around the screening hall, shouting insults and it was clear from their discussions with each other and behavior that they were intent on violence," said the organisers of the Side By Side film festival in a statement released today. The touring Lgbt-themed event was forced to bring its Novosibirsk screenings to an abrupt end yesterday.
The festival, which has faced problems in several locations due to an increasing surge in homophobia across Russia, had hoped for better in the Siberian city where it held successful events in 2010 and 2011. This year's screenings were being held in a multiplex on the fourth floor of a central shopping mall. About 30 young men, some bearing the insignia of far right organisations, gathered around the entrances to the building.

Last week, when Cannes announced its all-male list of competition directors, I was in a room in Florida filled with 25 talented women directors, producers, writers and distributors. This was the second annual Side By Side Symposium organized by Holly Herrick, director of Sarasota Film Festival Women (and former programmer at Sff). Along with the ongoing Through Women’s Eyes program of women's issues documentaries, this new program contributes to making Sarasota a primary film festival destination for women. Some female directors at the festival, a list that included Olivia Silver with her directorial debut "Arcadia" and Ry Russo-Young with her third film "Nobody Walks," commented on the ultra-rare experience of not being the only woman director in the room. "The numbers about the representation of women in the film business are disgusting. They’re incredibly low," said festival director Tom Hall. "I think it's...

New law means gay film festival must leave St Petersburg.
The Side By Side lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (lgbt) film festival has left its home city of St Petersburg after four years, relocating to Moscow. The move follows the passing of a local law in St Petersburg that bans anybody from presenting lgbt people as normal. Strictly speaking, it only applies to material that can be viewed by minors, but it is already being aggressively applied. Sergey Kondrashov, a straight, married man from the city, is currently facing jail for speaking out in defence of a lesbian...

The Renaissance Portrait from Donatello to Bellini Metropolitan Museum of Art Through March 18, 2012
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, in conjunction with the Bode-Museum, Berlin, has gathered over 150 fifteenth-century portraits: sculptures, drawings, paintings, and bronzes. Unlike most Renaissance portrait exhibitions, this one limits its purview to Italian artists and focuses specifically on the courts of Florence and Venice, as well as the princely courts of Ferrara, Milan, and Naples (the Met has supplemented the exhibition with some examples, from its permanent collection, of Northern European Renaissance works; not to be missed is Rogier van der Weyden's three-quarter portrait of Francesco d'Este (after 1475; below right), here displayed in a vitrine so as to permit a rare viewing of the d'Este coat of arms and dedication van der Weyden painted on the verso). This approach wisely narrows our view of this seminal moment in history, one that literally defined the...

Doing an impressive job of tracing the evolution of filmmaking technology (not just the cameras but the editing, post-production, distribution, exhibition, even the archiving aspects of it) from 1895 to the present day, “Side by Side” is an old school talking-head documentary on the subject of digital filmmaking vs. photochemical filmmaking. It sounds pretty dull as a logline, but stacked with gossipy, informal anecdotes and opinions from many of the most respected directors, cinematographers, editors, execs, VFX artists and digital wizards in the industry, it proves instead to be highly entertaining and informative, and by its close has presented a thoroughly diverting overview of the debate. Then again, we are massive geeks about this sort of thing. The film opens with a montage of clips of iconic films from the past century of cinema, with such beautiful, evocative imagery that if not by the “Mr. Smith Goes To Washington” moment, then certainly by the.

Hollywood couple Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan have matching tattoos commemorating their sickness-plagued honeymoon in Bali.
The pair jetted off to paradise for a brief "mini-moon" shortly after exchanging vows in 2009 and both came down with food poisoning.
Tatum recalls, "The first day in Bali I get food poisoning - the worst case that I have ever had... and on the third day she (Dewan) got it... so it's kind of a funny thing that we were side by side in the toilet.
"On the fourth day when we started to feel better we decided just to get tattoos of that."
As a result, both had the words 'Side by side' inked on their skin - Tatum at the top of his ribcage and Dewan on her foot.
The actor only hopes the ancient scribble really does translate as 'Side by side'.
He adds, "It probably says, 'Burger King's that way!'"...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Tatsumi Trailer "Yoshihiro Tatsumi is a mangaka known for his gekiga style of alternate Japanese manga." Wish I knew what that meant. Director Eric Khoo...

Everyone loves movie trailers; we can’t get enough of them here in The City of Films. It’s an art form that stands alone from the film itself and has a remarkable power to move us. If you’ve yet to see Susan Blackwell’s interview with Daniel Radcliffe for her Broadway.com video series Side by Side by Susan Blackwell, you’ll want to spend the next 16 minutes watching it here. Because Radcliffe is a bit of a slob — “I’m not clean or even vaguely pleasant to be around in a domestic situation,” he says after telling a story about how he once spilled Diet Coke, took off a sock to clean it up, then put the sock back on — friend Blackwell gives him a tutorial on how to clean her apartment. They start...

It’s not every day I find myself attending screenings for films that haven’t been made yet – let alone released – but I was delighted to attend my friend Daniel Johnson’s pre-production promo event for his upcoming debut feature Side By Side.
Held in the classy confines of Whitechapel’s Genesis Cinema, tonight was about raising awareness – and hopefully some cold hard cash – for the film. Daniel has previously helmed numerous short films, some of which were screened this evening in order to show off his considerable talent. We were treated to three shorts, Alone, Crazy Love and A Single Guy, all of which studied different aspects of relationships, often in comedic but always in interesting ways. Alone was a series of brief portraits of couples falling apart or failing to start; Crazy Love was a zany ‘meet-cute’ told from the point of view of a guy who seems...

Being a late-starter has become somewhat of a career for me. I was a late-starter when it came to puberty and spent the majority of my school days as the second shortest boy in my year (thankfully I wasn’t the shortest!). I was a late-starter when it came to girls, mostly because I spent a lot of my time living inside the pages of my comic collection. Most recently I was a late-starter hopping on board the digital comics train.
And it has got me to thinking: Will the geeks of the world let go of their paper collectables in favour of keeping modern?
Let me set the scene for you. Like most of my fellow comic-geeks I have been collecting since the moment I read my first comic book. I have managed to rack up quite a collection across the past 20 years, with long white cardboard boxes stored...
