Exclusive: The Martin cast reunion was a big highlight of the January 2024 Emmy Awards, underlining the lasting popularity of the 1990s sitcom. A year later, the show is getting a franchise extension with Varnell Hill, a spinoff series greenlighted by BET+. It is headlined by actor-comedian Tommy Davidson as the titular Varnell Hill, reprising the beloved character he played as a guest star on Martin.

Varnell Hill is co-created and executive produced by Martin co-creator, star and executive producer Martin Lawrence and Martin executive producer/showrunner Bentley Evans, with Jesse Collins also executive producing. There is no confirmation of Lawrence appearing on the show, but I hear he is poised to reprise his Martin Payne role in multiple episodes.

The announcement comes on the 35th anniversary of In Living Color, on which Davidson was an original cast member.

The series, set in the world of professional women’s basketball, which is having a moment with stars such as Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, comes from two-time WNBA All-Star Chiney Ogwumike and Glow creators Carly Mensch and Liz Flahive.

The half-hour project follows a hot-shot rookie WNBA player and her inexperienced agent navigating the wild ups and downs of the world of women’s professional basketball. It is loosely inspired by Ogwumike and her longtime business partner and agent, Allison Galer, who chose an unconventional path after Ogwumike, who was the first pick in the 2014, chose the 24-year old as her rep. It will look at the “glamour and grind” of women’s sports.

Jamie Foxx is paying tribute after friend and Django Unchained co-star Keith Jefferson passed away.

On Aug. 9, Jefferson announced on social media that he'd been diagnosed with cancer. Foxx shared on Thursday evening that Jefferson has since passed away at 53 years old by posting an image to Instagram along with the announcement. The Oscar winner also spoke about how painful this news is, speaking to his admiration for Jefferson as a person beyond just their friendship.

Clarence Avant, the beloved recording industry insider whose work as an executive, label owner, dealmaker and mentor earned him the nickname the “Godfather of Black Music,” has died. He was 92.

Avant died Sunday at his home in Los Angeles, his family announced in a statement. His death came 20 months after his wife of 54 years, philanthropist Jacqueline Avant, was shot and killed by an intruder in their Beverly Hills home in the early morning hours of Dec. 1, 2021.

Survivors include their daughter, Nicole Avant, a producer, former U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas and the wife of Netflix co-ceo and chief content officer Ted Sarandos, and their son, Alexander, a producer (Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!) and talent rep.

“Clarence leaves behind a loving family and a sea of friends and associates that have changed the world and will continue to change the world for generations to come,” the Avant/Sarandos family said.

Exclusive: Heather Hemmens is set to make her feature directorial debut with Ella Minnow Pea, a YA film based on the novel by Mark Dunn, for Gold Leaf Films.

Published in the U.S. in 2002 via MacAdam/Cage, the book centers on Ella, a young woman living happily on the island-nation of Nollop—many miles off the coast of South Carolina—until she’s forced to save her friends, family, and fellow citizens from the encroaching totalitarianism of the island’s Council.

Tom Morash penned the script, and Hemmens will produce alongside Megan Jordan (Black Monday) and M. Elizabeth Hughes (Short Term 12).

Hemmens is an actress, director and producer who recently helmed an episode of Roswell, New Mexico, The CW series in which she also stars. She was accepted to the DGA Episodic Director’s Program after helming the festival shorts Designated and Perils of an Active Mind.

Netflix has done it again! After just one season, it canceled the international drama Hit & Run, from the team behind Fauda and starring Lior Raz and Sanaa Lathan. This comes after a big summer of cancellations for the streamer, which saw freshman series like The Crew, Country Comfort, The Irregulars, Jupiter’s Legacy, Grand Army, and Dad Stop Embarrassing Me all axed. The Netflix turnover has some viewers streaming mad. “Man, Netflix makes these great shows and cancels them after one season,” one tweeted. “It’s absolutely annoying.” Another Twitter user wrote, “Netflix needs to stop making shows that it never promotes and then cancels after one season because it got no exposure… Getting me emotionally invested in canceled shows and for what.” The Powers That Be at Netflix are aware of the criticism. Per Deadline, the streamer has canceled Hit & Run after a single season.

In this action thriller," a happily married man’s life is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a mysterious hit and run accident in Tel Aviv," reads the logline.

"Grief-stricken and confused, he searches for his wife’s killers, who have fled to the U.S."

"With the help of an ex-lover, he uncovers disturbing truths about his beloved wife and the secrets she kept from him."

The cast included Lior Raz, Sanaa Lathan, Kaelen Ohm, Moran Rosenblatt, Gal Toren, Lior Ashkenazi, and Gregg Henry.

The series launched in early August with a nine-part season.

The streamer has not revealed viewership metrics to date, but it is thought the series failed to garner traction on par with the other new original series this season.

Starring and executive-produced by Fauda‘s Lior Raz, the nine-episode thriller centered on Segev Azulay, a former Israeli mercenary-turned-family man who was thrust back into the world of espionage after his wife’s violent death unearthed a world full of mysteries, secrets and lies. Sanaa Lathan (The Affair) co-starred as Naomi Hicks, an old fling from Segev’s past and a dogged investigative reporter.

Exclusive: Beat Shazam‘s Corinne Foxx is set for a key recurring role opposite Brenda Song on the second season of Kat Dennings’ Hulu comedy series Dollface. The half-hour show is currently in production in Los Angeles, with new episodes set to air on Hulu in 2022.

Created by Jordan Weiss, Dollface follows Jules (Dennings), a young woman who – after being dumped by her longtime boyfriend – must deal with her own imagination in order to literally and metaphorically re-enter the world of women and rekindle the female friendships she left behind.

Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to proceed with new seasons of four comedy series: the multi-camera The Crew, Country Comfort and Mr. Iglesias and single-camera Bonding.

The Crew, headlined by Kevin James, and Country Comfort, starring Katherine McPhee and Eddie Cibrian, are ending after their seasons; Mr. Iglesias, toplined by Gabriel Iglesias, produced two seasons, which were released in three parts; and Bonding, created and directed by Rightor Doyle, also did two seasons.

Netflix is staying in business with several key auspices from the canceled shows.

The streamer has closed a development deal with James to develop a single-camera comedy series for the actor-comedian to produce and star in.

Sasha Dixon will no longer have to worry about her embarrassing dad, now that Netflix has cancelled Jamie Foxx’s family comedy Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! after one season, our sister site Deadline reports.

Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to proceed with a second season of Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!, a father-daughter comedy starring and executive produced by Oscar winner Jamie Foxx. The series, inspired by Foxx’s relationship with his daughter, Corinne Foxx, who produced alongside Alex Avant, debuted its eight-episode first season on April 14.

Kyla-Drew played Foxx’s daughter, with David Alan Grier also starring on the multi-camera comedy, alongside Porscha Coleman and Jonathan Kite.

Foxx, who was reportedly involved in the decision to end the series, co-created Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! with sitcom veteran Jim Patterson who stepped down as showrunner ahead of start of production and was replaced by Bentley Kyle Evans. Ken Whittingham directed the first six episodes. Evans directed the last two.

Netflix and Foxx have a long-standing creative partnership, which includes two upcoming films, They Cloned Tyrone and Day Shift.

It takes a minute to adjust to the reality of “The Upshaws.” At first glance, the new Netflix comedy appears to look and sound like a multitude of other multi-cam sitcoms about families that crack corny jokes and give each other loving grief. There are plenty of the same strewn about Netflix, from “Fuller House” to Jamie Foxx’s latest slapstick entry, “Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!” But “The Upshaws,” created by Regina Hicks and Wanda Sykes, finds a way to even slightly twist the formula perfected by broadcast networks. Like the late “One Day at a Time” reboot before it, , albeit one that should resonate with plenty of people who may not have been able to say the same previously.

The first season of Dad Stop Embarrassing Me may have opened to mixed reviews, but naysayers of the show cannot deny that the family sitcom has a lot going for it. The premise itself, that of a single father re-learning the facets of parenthood and helping his teenage daughter cope with her mother’s death, is sensitive and engaging.

The performances are unquestionably excellent, and since it’s a character-driven show, the actors have a lot of room to showcase their range. Netflix’s Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! is a new Black sitcom that has Jamie Foxx revisiting his comedy roots.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings assures people that the streaming platform is not cracking down on password sharing.

“Netflix wants you to relax: It’s not preparing a widescale crackdown on password sharing. Fears of crackdown came up last month when at least a few users encountered a new security measure that can block access to a Netflix account if you don’t live in the same household as the actual account holder.”

Jamie Foxx’s family sitcom Dad Stop Embarrassing Me just dropped on Netflix and while the show does have a promising cast and a wholesome premise that appeals to many, it can definitely improve upon certain areas. But there’s no doubt that it’s a character-driven show as Jamie Foxx himself plays multiple roles in this one, from a groovy reverend to a petty uncle.

But Foxx’s primary role has him playing a single dad Brian Dixon whose teenage daughter Sasha comes to live with him in Atlanta, after her mom’s tragic death. Brian has to balance parenting and managing his own cosmetic company which he inherited from his mother, though he does get some help from his sister Chelsea and the loveable Pops. With so many likable characters, it's interesting to consider who ranks above them all in that department.
