Dennis Hopper: Sunday Brunch With The last Rebel, Bristol
It would take a month of Sundays to do justice to Hopper's long and varied career, but this quartet is at least playing at a time of day the late American great might appreciate. Eat off that hangover with a "South West Full English" and watch four of Hopper's key films, even if his chemically enhanced performances might cause hangovers rather than cure them. In fact, this could well be part of a government safety campaign on the effects of different narcotics: Easy Rider (marijuana), Apocalypse Now (cocaine), Blue Velvet (solvent abuse) and The American Friend (Mogadon) – a tribute to Hopper's "range", then.

It's not easy to "celebrate" Tibetan culture wholeheartedly when we might just as easily mourn its systematic destruction, but this festival tells us it's all right to do both.

Apparently this week things started heating up in areas of the country that are not located in a sub-tropical climate and I've seen some complaints on the internet. It got up to 80º F! The horror! It's like it's June already! Listen, I get that it's a pretty big difference from normal spring weather, but color me unimpressed. High 70s to mid 80s Is spring here in Miami. We're all still wearing long pants and jackets in the evenings. (Also, I went to weather.com to confirm the weather here and there's an amusing glitch that shows tomorrow's low temperature as 32º. I know it's a glitch because I panicked and checked two other sources to make sure that wasn't true, so it was more "scary" than "amusing" for about a minute there.) Anyway, y'all can get me back when the humidity hits about 1,000% in early May and I'm trying to grow gills.

A most intimate look at the recognition of a peasant child as a prophet. A masterpiece of understatement Tibetan Buddhist master Lama Konchog is said to have meditated 26 years in a mountain cave. For this and other acts of devotion he was acknowledged the world over as one of the greatest living Tibetan masters. In 1980 the Lama was joined by his most devoted disciple, Tenzin Zopa, who was at his side at the Lama.s death in 2001. Tenzin was heartbroken at his master.s death, by far the closest human in his life. Under the tenants of Buddhism, Lama Konchog would have the decision in death to be reincarnated in any form he desired. But for the incarnation...

Before we look back at the past week, let's peak at what's opening this weekend: Francis Ford Coppola's family drama Tetro; Duncan Jones' sci-fi trip Moon; Daryl Wein's AIDS activist doc Sex Positive; Tommy Wirkola's Nazi zombie flick Dead Snow; Robert Kenner's appetizing (maybe) doc Food, Inc.; and Chai Vasarhelyi's music / tolerance plea Youssou Ndour: I Bring What I Love (poster and more info after the jump).
Box Office. Opening in four theaters, Sam Mendes' Away We Go scored a smashing $32,603 per-screen average last weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. The road trip comedy / drama, starring John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph as anxious, expectant parents searching for a place to raise their family, far outpaced other debuting indies, which had, on their own terms, decent returns: Seraphine ($6,640 per-screen at four theaters), Unmistaken Child ($6,293, one screen), and 24 City ($6,082, one screen). The Buddhist concept of reincarnation, while both mysterious and enchanting, is hard for most Westerners to grasp. A new film -- from Israel -- is out to change that. The film features the Dalai Lama. Unmistaken Child follows the search for a reincarnated Tibetan master. It opened in New York June 3 at the Film Forum. Unmistaken Child follows the four-year search for the reincarnation of Lama Konchog, a world-renowned Tibetan master who passed away in 2001 at age 84. Unmistaken Child: searching for a reincarnated Tibetan master. The Dalai Lama charges the deceased monk's devoted disciple, Tenzin Zopa, to search for his master's reincarnation. Tenzin had been in service to the Dalai Lama for 21 years - since the age of seven. The difficulty was that the child might be found anywhere...

- Oscilloscope have been making huge strides at becoming the home for socially relevant and socially responsible documentary films: just in the last three months they've released The Garden, Burma VJ and Unmistaken Child. Now the New York based distributer have added one more Sundance Film Festival doc title to their slate with plans to open Laura Gabbert and Justin Schein's No Impact Man: The Documentary on September 4th. A feature film version may be in the works, Columbia House picked up the screen rights to a feature based on the book by Colin Beavan. The synopsis mentions that "Beavan cut out all forms of consumption that leave a footprint, including electricity and automated transportation", but the choice of becoming a vegetarian and not becoming a vegan ultimately No Impact Man becomes a person who makes a little imapct. The doc examines the effects on him and his family.

Appropriate to the Buddhist traditions it respectfully observes, Nati Baratz’s documentary Unmistaken Child is more meditation than exposé; it pokes into the rituals surrounding a reincarnated Tibetan master without ever calling them into question. Any skepticism must come from viewers, who might wonder how, say, the ashes on the master’s cremation pyre could reveal the location of his reincarnated self, or what it means to take a toddler away from his family so he might fulfill a higher spiritual purpose. But Baratz’s refusal to ask questions doesn’t mean he lacks curiosity, either, and on balance, the ...

Once Israeli director Nati Baratz (Tel Aviv-Kyrgyzstan, Noches) learned about the upcoming search for the reincarnation of a world-renowned, beloved Tibetan master, he committed four years of his life to documenting the search. The result is an unforgettable journey through remote Tibetan villages, as seen through the eyes of a devoted disciple. As the film opens at the Film Forum in New York City, Baratz shares his remarkable tale of patience, balance, and discovery. In 2002, I traveled to Tibet with my wife Liat. During our last month, we cycled 800 kilometers from Tibet's capital city Lhasa to Katmandu, Nepal, to attend a one-month course to deepen our understanding of Tibetan Buddhism at Kopan Monastery. At the end of the course, a monk named Tenzin Zopa came to talk about his life experience with his master, Geshe Lama Konchog, who had recently passed away. Tenzin spoke of his master with great love,...

I want to report a case of child abuse. A 4-year- old boy has been carried away by a man in red robes, has had all his hair shaved off and has been forced to live in a monastery in remote Nepal.
But the man in red robes, Tenzin Zopa by name, isn't going to get into trouble. Everything he's done is perfectly legal. In fact, the Dalai Lama is on his side.
Here's why: On the slimmest of evidence, the pudgy lad has been judged to be the reincarnation of a...

For a market that is supposed to be flat, there are a number of U.S. film acquisitions made in the month of March, not to mention February. If there's no money, are these companies acquiring them for no mgs? The films are also holding up surprisingly well in theaters which bodes well for future sales of independent films into the coming year. Rumblings from venture capital waiting in the wings to begin investing again are also heard. I predict 2010 will be the year of the turnaround when the buying cycle begins again. Meanwhile there are some bargains to be had. Also notable are the key festivals where these films have all shown.
Amreeka was acquired by National Geographic and will open New Directors/ New Films. It showed as a work in progress at the Dubai Film Festival and went from there to its world premiere at Sundance. William Morris Independent brokered the deal on behalf of E1 Entertainment which has acquired Charlotte Mickie's and Robert Lantos' Maximum as well as U.K. distribtution company Contender all of which are very notable moves in the industry.
Afghan Star which showed at IDFA went to ZeitgeistZeitgeist[/link] for U.S. It was the Sundance World Doc winner of both Best Director and Audience Awards. Earlier this month they acquired Three Monkeys from the bankrupt New Yorker whose auction earlier this month found no takers. So its catalog still resides with its creditor Technicolor.
Nowhere Boy went to The Weinstein Co. for U.S., Latin America and German speaking territories from Hanway.
The Greatest went to Senator for North America who saw it at Sundance. It was repped by Graham Taylor of Endeavor and CAA on behalf of the filmmakers.
Paranoids went to Oscilloscope from Visit Films for North America just before its SXSW premiere. The Toronto and Berlin film of Fortissimo, Unmistaken Child, went earlier to Oscilloscope for North America. Earlier in the month Oscilloscope acquired Burma VJ and The Garden.
B-Side acquired its first film for U.S., RiP: A Remix Manifesto before its SXSW screening. Disinformation will release it on DVD. In Canada Eye Steele and National Film Board of Canada will partner with B-Side on its release there.
One of several new U.S. distributors, Trela Media, acquired its first of 6 envisioned yearly acquisitions, Guest of Cindy Sherman which has played in several festivals already for North America.
Another new and innovative U.S. distribution configuration of Variance Films, Elementary Films and Argyle Productons will will release the Hot Docs, Hamptons and Margaret Mead festival film Nursery University in April 2009 in New York.
Lorber HT Digital acquired Intangible Asset #82 before it SXSW premiere and Nollywood Babylon which showed in Toronto and Sundance for North America.
Anvil! The Story of Anvil was acquired by VH1 for North America.
Strand acquied U.S. rights to The Headless Woman from Focus. It had been named one of the best as yet undistributed films of 2008 by IndieWIRE after its premier in Cannes last year.
First Run acquired Four Seasons Lodge by Albert Maysles and a handpicked team for U.S.
Wolfe acquired Pedro for DVD and VOD, and MTV acquired TV rights in North America. Produced by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland for U.S., it premiered in Toronto.
The Cove which premiered in Sundance and was acquired for world sales by The Works went to Lionsgate, Roadside Attractions and Participant for U.S. The deal was made with William Morris Indendent and Submarine.
Alive Mind, Richard Lorber's intellectual, spiritual and alternative distribution outfit acquired North American rights to Theater of War.
Film Movement acquired North American rights to Munyurangabo from Umedia after its festival screenings in Cannes' Un Certain Regard, Berlin, Toronto and New Directors/ New Films. It premiered at Slamdance.
Regent acquired worldwide rights excluding North America to Weather Girl from Submarine Entertainment.

Berlin -- Richard Loncraine's "My One and Only," a '50s-era comedy starring Renee Zellweger and Kevin Bacon, was squeezed into the competition lineup for this year's Berlin International Film Festival, barely a week before the event kicks off.
Zellweger plays a glamorous single mom on the hunt for a rich man to foot the bill for her and her sons' lifestyle. Produced by Merv Griffith Entertainment and Ray Gun Prods., "My One and Only" will have its world premiere in Berlin. Essential Entertainment is handling international sales.
Berlin also added Lone Scherfig's Sundance favorite "An Education" with Peter Sarsgaard, Alfred Molina and Emma Thompson and Davis Guggenheim's music documentary "It Might Get Loud" for its Berlinale Special Galas, ensuring the films will get the red carpet treatment without any of the pressure of competition.
All three films should give an added boost of star power to...
