At the height of the ’60s they famously sang “All You Need is Love,” yet a letter from John Lennon to Paul McCartney shows that love was literally the last thing on anyone’s mind after the demise of The Beatles.

I once wrote that Yoko Ono (born February 18, 1933) made more great albums than any solo Beatle, but also more bad albums. Of course, perspectives on Ono's music vary wildly, and the albums I think are great are the ones the mainstream rejected most vigorously. It's when she makes the most concessions to pop norms (whether rock or dance/electronic) and her lyrics get sappy that I don't like her work. But certainly anyone starting to explore her music could use some guidance.
There are plenty of places to read about her life, so I won't review that info, especially as I touched on some of it in my recent interview. But a few points are worth making, over and over, to counter clichés and misconceptions that have thrived for decades. Ms. Ono was a respected artist for years before she and John Lennon met near the end of 1966. And she didn't break up the Beatles,...

Yoko Ono, an icon of imagination in a variety of artistic fields, declares that "inspiration, energy and elevation"are the themes that have run through all her creative activities. Her new album, Yokokimthurston (which I reviewed for eMusic.com) is a collaboration with Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore that embodies those qualities as thoroughly and provocatively as any album she's released since her classic '70s LPs.
Asked whether she finds the new album comparable to any of her previous work, Ono answers, "Maybe the first, Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band. But this time, the sound that came out was much darker, reflecting what's going on in the world now." Maybe it's the company she's keeping, maybe it's the times, but a big part of what makes Yokokimthurston like Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band is how it unleashes the unabashed, undiluted avant-garde Yoko at her most spontaneous.

In perfectly exploitative fashion, “X-Factor” began with a recap of judge Nicole Scherzinger’s spectacularly disastrous decision last week to send the competition into deadlock, and inadvertently, to send 13-year-old Rachel Crow home. While the mounting pressure must be enormous on the judges to choose which acts truly deserve to go forward, Scherzinger made a fatal, irresponsible miscalculation in not voting, precisely because it’s supposed to be her expertise which helps shepherd performers with real promise past the ones with,...

We’ve reached that wonderful point in the X Factor season where each and every one of us can agree on what needs to happen next: Cheryl Cole should take the next cross-Atlantic flight from the UK and replace Nicole Shiftingblankets.
As for which three of the four remaining contestants – Melanie Amaro, Marcus Canty, Chris Rene, and Josh Krajcik — should make next week’s finals, well, let’s not make any hasty judgments. Instead, let’s all kick back with a nice glass* of veen and discuss how the performances play out. (*By “glass,” I mean “bottle,” obvs.)

Eighty-four years from now, Thia Megia will celebrate her 99th birthday, the last “Charlie Chapman” movie in existence will crumble into dust, and the University of Reality Television at Seaside Heights, NJ, will replace Harvard as the nation’s most prestigious house of higher education. When students at said institution open their History of American Idol: Season 10 textbooks to the chapter on Top 13 Performance Night, they may be surprised to find only murky recollections of the actual musical numbers.
Oh sure, they’ll read about Lauren Alaina pouting, Thia Megia crying, Haley Reinhart yodeling, and Jacob Lusk howling like...

The Top 13 round of "American Idol" separated the good from the mediocre. Among those who stood out on the pre-taped episode were Pia Toscano and most of the guys. Pia belted out Celine Dion's "All by Myself" with her signature high and diva-like notes and got praised by Randy Jackson for nailing one of the dreaded big-three female singers.
James Durbin also charmed his way to the judges' heart with his rendition of Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed". "Yo, this dude can do anything man," Randy said, adding "James Durbin is dangerous!" Jacob Lusk was also triumphant with the uplifting single from R. Kelly, "I Believe I Can Fly". Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez both said it's hard to judge someone who is so good. "Pure passion, pure music, I can't even judge ya, that's how good you are," Steven noted.

It was a case of the good, the sad, and the ugly when the American Idol season 10 finalists took the stage to sing tracks by their personal musical heroes tonight. Those adjectives could also be used to describe the mixed bag of critiques coming from judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler, who managed to finally conjure up unenthusiastic feedback for Thia Megia and Karen Rodriguez, but completely excused Jacob Lusk’s caterwauling evisceration of “I Believe I Can Fly.” Why The Face?
