Kim Kardashian West appeared to have the time of her life over Halloween weekend, with a trio of costumes (yes, a trio) to, as she said, pay homage to iconic music legends. But many social media users weren’t pleased when the reality TV star dressed as one of R&B’s most beloved singers: Aaliyah.
Kardashian West, 37, took on the late singer’s look from her 2001 hit “Try Again,” wearing a bejeweled choker, with a matching bra and black pants. Naturally, she showed off the costume on social media, writing, “Baby Girl Aaliyah.”

A video posted by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on Aug 25, 2016 at 9:52am Pdt Thursday marks 15 years since Aaliyah was tragically killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas, and the late singer's good friend, Beyoncé, honored her memory in a very sweet, very simple way. The "All Night Long" singer took to Instagram to post a short video of the pair having fun at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards in Culver City, CA. In the clip, a bubbly Beyoncé asks Aaliyah who she's looking forward to seeing during the show. "I wanna see D'Angelo perform," she said, to which Beyoncé hilariously replied, "Girl, I'm with ya, cause you know he fine!" The sweet moment came just a little over a year before Aaliyah was killed. After filming her music video for "Rock the Boat" on the Abaco Islands, the 22-year-old boarded a plane to return to Florida, but it crashed shortly after takeoff,...

Hey, guess what? Lifetime's Whitney Houston biopic actually doesn't look terrible! Admittedly, this is judging from a brief trailer released by the network Thursday (via Buzzfeed), which shows Yaya DaCosta in action as the music legend for the first time. Watch it: Can we all agree this will at least be better than that cut-rate Aaliyah movie everybody hate-tweeted? Here are five reasons why I suspect it may surprise us all. 1. Yaya DaCosta is actually talented. Credit where credit is due: DaCosta rose from the career ash heap known as "ex-'America's Next Top Model contestant" to forge a legitimate acting career. In fact, she was one HitFix's picks for "13 actors who should be bigger movie stars" back in June. Truly, I thought she was one of the best parts of "Lee Daniels' The Butler," and she even made an impression in "The Kids Are All Right" despite being onscreen for only a few minutes.

Timbaland is rocking the boat in his late friend Aaliyah's defense. The musician and producer, 42, took to Twitter and Instagram this weekend to speak out against the Lifetime biopic about the late "Rock the Boat" singer. Aaliyah, who died at the age of 22 in August 2001, was the subject of Lifetime's Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B movie, which chronicled the celebrated star's life. She was played by Nickelodeon actress Alexandra Shipp in the movie's Saturday, Nov. 15 debut. Timbaland, who was a friend and collaborator of [...]...

Lifetime aired its controversial biopic on late R&B icon Aaliyah tonight, and true to the network’s recent trend with celebrity and pop culture tell-alls — need we bring up the cringe-worthy Brittany Murphy and Saved By the Bell films? — it was pretty bad. While there are some positives to Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B (it paints the “Try Again” singer as passionate and determined, and lead actress Alexandra Shipp both looks and feels like Aaliyah), most of it is quite insulting.
There’s a reason why Aaliyah’s family didn’t condone this movie (allegedly, they’re saving their own biopic plans for the big screen). It skates over many aspects of her life that undoubtedly impacted her in a profound way, notably her relationship with R.Kelly, who produced Aaliyah’s first album Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number (1994) and began an inappropriate relationship with the...

Hollywood tragically lost R&B star Aaliyah 12 years ago.
The Brooklyn-born singer died in a plane crash on Aug. 25, 2001. She was flying home from the Bahamas, where she was on location filming her "Rock The Boat" music video. She was 22 years old.
Aaliyah shined bright from a young age. She appeared on an episode of "Star Search" at 10 years old, then signed with Jive Records two years later. R. Kelly even served as a mentor during her earlier music career stages.
She was a multi-talented triple threat. The Grammy-nominated R&B queen topped the charts with classics, including "Are You That Somebody" and "Try Again." She proved her acting chops with lead roles in "Romeo Must Die" and "Queen of the Damned." Her stunning beauty was recognized in a Tommy Jeans ad campaign.
Recently, Aaliyah has been in the news as rappers Drake and Chris Brown resurrected the star's sultry voice in their own releases.

Los Angeles gets better and better! The weekend began with a screening that the local arthouse-state-of-the-art-theater Downtown Independent held of Rock The Boat: The L.A. River Expedition, an enlightening look at what L.A. could be if it took back the river as a public place for kayaking, sunbathing, drinking coffee at its cafes and its possible contribution to water conservation efforts in California. Saturday began with a swim at the gym up the block and then a visit to the art galleries on Washington and So. La Cienega where former filmmaker Seth Carmichael announced his gallery's move to the just emerging art scene at La Brea and Washington and Andrea Bowers gave a great show at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects linking today's Occupy movement with that of the Wobblies (International Workers Party) in the 1890s and ended with Cuban salsa at Los Globos in Echo Park where we danced the night away with local Latinos. On Sunday 100,000 bicycle riders rode the streets of L.A. during the 5th CiLAvia, an event which originated in Chile. In the city's biggest block party, we had the chance to eat the best tacos in town at King Taco at Soto and Cesar Chavez Blvd. in Ela, a hard choice between it and Chinatown or the local Thai and Korean places along the way and food trucks of all ethnicities at the various hubs. A Great Event!
Next weekend Free Screenings of Latino films and workshops will be offered by the Muestra de Cine GuadaLajara (The Guadalajara International Film Festival and The University of Guadalajara Foundation, USA) at AMC Universal City Walk. RSVP Now to get a seat because tickets are going fast!. The Red Carpet Opening Ceremony at the Globe Theater, 100 Universal City Plaza kicks off the event this Friday October 12 and is honoring Alfonso Arau and Jorge Camara, one of Hollywood's most respected international journalists and VP of Hollywood Foreign Press Association with a special tribute to Lupe Ontiveros, award-winning actress, producer, activist and visionary.
With the absence this year of Laliff which is spreading its wings in the L.A. Unified School District, teaching filmmaking to kids and is spreading out screenings throughout the year, the appearance of Ficg here in L.A. is filling a gap. I am spotting a new trend with festivals organizing with universities. In Havana it is with Eictv. Ficg has always has the University component as has Miami Iff and San Diego Latino Film Festival. Guadalajara Ff (Ficg) and the University are also offering Latino TV as a link to the Hispanic community of Los Angeles on Channel 31.2 (Udg TV/ L.A. California and TV Abierta, Universidad de Guadalajara (Udgtv.com) Monday to Sunday it offers more than 19 hours of continuous programming of original programming for children, youth, family in news, sports and opinioun. and as Ivan Trujillo, the director of Ficg announced, there will also be a Festival of Books in Spanish called LeaLA May 17-19, 2013 at L.A. Convention Center.
The University of Guadalajara Foundation in the United States of America (Udg Foundation-usa) is made up of academic and social leaders and is privately supported by individuals, foundations and corporations to bloster high quality academic and cultural activities of the Udg, Los Angeles to help Mexican and other Latinos living in this region improve their quality of life and enhance their cultural identity.
Ficg itself will hold its 28th edition March 1 - 9, 2013 in Guadalajara. As Mexico's most important film festival, it hosts the Berlinale Talent Campus, a Doculab and Writing with Light workshops, Cannes Market's Producers Network and last year represented 45 countries in 504 screenings on 32 screens where it screened 281 films of which 97 were Mexican for the public of more than 142,000 and for 3,504 registered industry participants, 875 journalists, 1,106 companies registered at the industry offices. Competition of Iberamerican and Mexican features, docs and shorts, Lgbt competition for the Premio Maguey, Works in Progress: Guadalajara Construye 7 and so many other events, and yet is an intimate gathering where everyone can talk to everyone. See you there!!

Here's the thing with Glee: First it takes you up, up, up, and then it drives you down, down, down. Like last night's first of two episodes, "Props," which has to be one of its best episodes ever – well-written, tightly plotted, interesting, moving, and featuring some amazing performances – that was followed by an episode so uninspired I wish I could just sum it up by saying, "And then they won Nationals."
But.
Remember way, way long ago, in the pilot, there was this cute Asian goth chick who sang "Rock the Boat" and stuttered? Well, they got her back for tonight's episode! And they let her sing... more than once!
My glee (get it?) at Tina's emergence from the shadows is somewhat dimmed by the realization that Kurt and Blaine had gone trick or treating as Sooki and The Situation from Jersey Shore (thank you everyone on Twitter for...

Here's your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite. In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments. "Rock the Boat: Saving America's Wildest River" Tweetable Logline: An adventure story about Los Angeles and the little river that could. With cops in helicopters and civilians in kayaks. Elevator Pitch: Rock the Boat is a fun, fast-paced documentary about the Los Angeles River and the challenges society faces in providing clean water to urban populations (think Huckleberry Finn meets Chinatown). When satirical writer and avid kayaker George Wolfe organizes a boating trip to demand public access to the river, he and his motley crew become entangled in a national controversy surrounding the river’s “navigability” and consequent eligibility for Clean Water Act protection. With breathtaking images of the La.

Last week on Gossip Girl, a faux G.G. got investigative and ruthless, a trying-too-hard couple turned British, and a shocking revelation found Chuck Bass speechless, but not before telling his two-timing mom like it is.
Take all that, infuse a little designer and you have our fashion recap of "Salon of the Dead" ...
An angelic face, porcelain skin, and a soft dress isn’t going to convince everyone you’re so innocent, Lola. Looking very romantic and playing the doe-eyed part well worked ... when you shocked them all dropping a bomb that wasn’t yours to drop on poor, poor Chuck.
Actual Dress: Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti Metallic crochet-knit dress
Steal Dress: Nightcap Clothing Victorian Lace Dress
Getting more vicious as the weeks, er, episodes pass, Serena looked deadly in a black beaded, backless dress. Think about it, the real Gossip Girl would only dress to kill ... so it’s suitable,...

Drake has suggested that he could be working on a posthumous collaboration with Aaliyah. The rapper and actor has been busy promoting his sophomore album Take Care, released last November. "I have some great Aaliyah news coming soon," Drake told Tim Westwood in an interview. "Some special things." On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah boarded a plane along with members of her record label after she finished filming her 'Rock the Boat' music video. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff at The Bahamas. Last month, her former producer hinted that a posthumous album of unreleased material may be out in the future. Drake, however, refused to elaborate when Westwood asked him if his news had anything do with the rumored record. "Just some special things, you know," Drake teased. "Great things (more)...

A posthumous album from Aaliyah is reportedly in the works, according to the late singer’s former producer Jeffery "J. Dub" Walker.
Walker, who co-wrote “I Refuse” and “What If” off of Aaliyah’s 2001 self-titled third album, tweeted earlier this week (which was later deleted) that an unreleased song that he produced titled “Steady Ground” will be featured “on her upcoming album.” Following the tweet Walker revealed to YouKnowIGotSoul.com that the track was originally recorded for the “One In A Million” singer’s 2001 opus.
“It was really the first single after “Rock The Boat,” but my engineer was mixing the record and somehow lost the vocals,” he explained. “So the vocals that you hear are really just the demo vocals. The final vocals got erased, so yeah. So that’s why it didn’t make the album.”
Though there’s no official statement or release date set for the project,...

Fans of Aaliyah may be in for a treat, if one of the last producers to work with the late R&B superstar is to be believed.
Jeffery "J. Walker's tweet has since been taken down, but Soul Culture managed to take a screen grab before it was pulled.
"Just got great news today; the smash unreleased song called 'Steady Ground' I produced on #Aaliyah is gonna be on her upcoming album," Walker's tweet read.

It is difficult to describe what Aaliyah meant to us back in 2001, when her life was tragically taken so abruptly on August 22. She was the epitome of understated cool, of raw talent mixed with genuine humility and effortless, chameleon-like style. She was both hard and soft, edgy and adorable, the it girl who wasn’t interested in wearing the crown. She was stunning, always, as evidenced in the red carpet pics below. But most importantly she was a massive musical talent who owned the industry during her short life. On the verge of a movie career, Aaliyah was posed for mega-mega-stardom when her plane crashed after taking of from the Bahamas, following the video shoot for her hit single “Rock the Boat.” There is no doubt that she lives on in legacy of performers — Beyonce, Gaga, Rihanna, Ke$ha, Katy — who have followed in her footsteps, mixing style with serious singing skills.

December 1977: Number 4 in our series of the 50 key events in the history of dance music
Released on 16 December 1977, Saturday Night Fever was the film that broke disco in both senses: it popularised and developed the form at the same time as it froze a vibrant and creative subculture. Saturday Night Fever made disco ubiquitous in 1978. It became a fad – with the inevitable backlash.
The statistics tell the story. The film took more than $3m in the first weekend, eventually going on to gross in the region of $237m; it became the fourth highest grossing movie of 1977. The soundtrack album included six Us No 1s and it topped the charts for 24 weeks in the Us, 18 weeks in the UK.
In fact, disco had been building for several years. In his ground-breaking September 1973 Rolling Stone story, Vince Aletti traced its origins in the underground return of the discotheque, "where the hardcore dance crowd – blacks,...

Here’s the DVD cover for Tila Tequila Uncorked, the sex tape that Tila Tequila Doesn’T Want You To See! When I don’t want people to see something, what I do is, I film all of it, but I do not release that film then really hope someone else doesn’t release that film. If there’s an easier way to have people not see something that I do not want them to see, then please explain that way to me so I can film your suggestion and not release it. Nevertheless, I have a couple questions about the tape itself (posted along with obligatory Nsfw Tila still): 1) Aren’t you supposed to release the sex tape before becoming inexplicably famous? The proper progression is, Sex Tape > Interaction With One Of The Davises > Inexplicable Fame. It’s a time-tested system – Don’T Rock The Boat, Tila. 2) Judging by the cover,...

On this day in 2001, the music world lost one of its true visionaries when Aaliyah, who was only 22 years old at the time, died in a plane crash along with eight other passengers after filming a music video in the Bahamas. Her tragic passing came just as she was releasing her finest album Aaliyah, which had come out only a month prior to hear death. Though she was only 22, she had still managed to become an industry veteran, as she appeared on "Star Search" at the age of nine and signed her first record deal at 12. She recorded her first album Age Ain't Nothing But a Number when she was only 14, and she had two Gold singles and a platinum album before her 16th birthday.

Nearly a decade has passed since R&B icon Aaliyah's death, and her impact is still being felt. On Wednesday (August 25), the ninth anniversary of the star's tragic death at age 22, Missy Elliott and Drake sounded off about the later singer's effect on music, and several of her celebrity fans took to Twitter to reflect on her enduring style and influence.
Funky songstress Janelle Monáe credits Aaliyah's unique look and mesmerizing footwork with keeping her on the straight-and-narrow. "Aaliyah was an inspiration," the Midwestern-born artist tweeted. "Always kept me & my friends in [Kansas City] out of trouble. Too busy in the mirror doing her 'swoop' bang & dance moves.:)"
Many stars co-signed each other's thoughts about the late hitmaker, who died in a plane crash in the Bahamas after shooting her "Rock the Boat" video with Hype Williams.

"Unforgettable," produced by Noah "40" Shebib, also features Young Jeezy. The number begins with Aaliyah softly cooing, "Let me know," over and over, part of her refrain from "(At Your Best) You Are Love," which was on her 1994 debut, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number.

The movie's title makes it sound like something plucked off the Lifetime channel, but after watching the international trailer for The Boat That Rocked it just rocketed up to the top of my must see movies of the year. Unfortunately, as of now it has no release date here in America. For those of you in Europe and Australia this April, you'll be able to watch a movie starring Nick Frost, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Bill Nighy as rebel disc jockeys running a floating pirate radio station. It's kind of like Wkrp, but at sea. It takes place at the birthplace of rock n' roll, when Britain's government run radio stations refused to play rock. To get around the legal restrictions, a pirate radio station is set up off the coast on a boat that quite literally, rocks. Watch the first trailer for The Boat That Rocked below, and start...
