Sunday saw the 96th Annual Oscars ceremony broadcast live across the world, and for UK audiences it saw the show broadcast on ITV. There is lots to be said about this year’s Oscars, from winners and losers, to poor broadcasting panels – it is safe to say the award season gave us everything we’re used to.
For the UK the show has found a new home. Previously playing exclusively on Sky, this year it was broadcast by ITV. When the news of this broke it was a welcome change to many viewers across the UK, as for years the exclusivity of Sky has left the award show inaccessible for many film fans. Now, the new home for the awards show has some things it needs to get right, ultimately to provide insight and entertainment, throughout the breaks in between the Oscars broadcast. Unfortunately, many viewers were left unsatisfied and...

As the hulks of multi-million-dollar stadiums around the world attest in Haruna Honcoop’s investigative doc “Olympic Halftime,” the greatest global games have also built a reputation for massive waste and deception.

Following Disney’s delay of Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3 due to the actors strike, Paramount has made changes to next year’s schedule and beyond.
Similar to Deadpool 3, Mission Impossible 8 ne Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two needs to restart production, and that is looking unlikely with each day that passes in the SAG-AFTRA strike. The Tom Cruise sequel moves from June 28, 2024 next year to May 23, 2025 Memorial Day. The studio will have to access to Imax screens and Memorial Day is a special place as that’s where Cruise launched his biggest movie of all-time, Top Gun: Maverick to $1.49 billion WW.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One grossed $172.1M domestic, $567.5M WW this past summer. That’s a lot of money to remove from the 2024 box office, but such is the nature of the business right now. Mission: Impossible 8 will get a three-week run in Imax...

Protesters calling for U.S. support of a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, and an end to the “ongoing atrocities against Palestinians,” occupied a building in the U.S. Capitol complex on Wednesday, with thousands gathering outside of the Capitol.

As the deadline for Disney and Comcast’s agreement for a sale of Hulu inches closer, the two parties are working to determine the streaming service’s fair-market value. But what happens if they can’t agree? A new filing spells that out.
“In the event the parties do not come to agreement regarding equity fair value, each party appoints an investment banking firm to determine the value,” Disney wrote in an SEC filing Friday. “If the two determinations are not within 10% of each other, then the two investment banking firms select a third firm to make a third determination, in which case the equity fair value shall be the average of the two determinations that are closest in value to each other.”

Paramount Global hosted its second-quarter earnings call Tuesday amid the ongoing writers and actors strikes in Hollywood. Just like every other major media company that has reported its Q2 results already, the CBS parent company’s execs addressed the work stoppages with hopes for a timely resolution and comments on how it will affect their business operations.

Paramount Global reached 61 million Paramount+ streaming subscribers worldwide in the three months ended June 30, a slight gain from the 60 million announced last quarter, but importantly the company pared down its streaming losses.
On the streaming side, the company reported a quarterly adjusted operating loss before depreciation and amortization of $424 million compared to $511 million last quarter and $445 million a year ago. Something was amiss with Michelangelo’s waistline.
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the team behind the high school comedy “Superbad,” had sold Brian Robbins, the CEO of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon, on the idea of adding some adolescent anarchy into their animated reboot of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” But there was a problem with the initial designs for the film’s four reptile heroes: Instead of looking like muscular teens, these Turtles were scrawny and malnourished, barely strong enough to wield nunchucks or hurl a throwing star. “They looked like they were on Ozempic,” Robbins jokes.
In his peripatetic career, the 59-year-old Robbins has been on every end of these kind of creative discussions, working as an actor, writer, director, producer, digital entrepreneur and now, studio chief. And that separates him from other movie moguls, who arrive at the C-suite from Mba programs and years spent in the corporate trenches.

Everyone needs a home-cooked meal once and a while and sometimes you just need to assemble a group of Italian grandmothers to make sure it happens. At least, that’s the basic plot of Nonnas, an original comedy by Stephen Chbosky (Wonder) which will star Vince Vaughn (Freaky)
Per Deadline, Nonnas is based on the true story of “Brooklyn native Joe Scaravella, who, after losing his beloved mother, realizes he’s wasted time as a single man at a dead-end job and yearns for a second chance at life. Motivated by his Italian mother’s love of cooking, but with no culinary experience and dwindling funds, he opens a restaurant unlike any other by hiring the most unlikely team of chefs — one consisting of grandmothers.“

Dutch director Marc Schmidt is no stranger to films on mental health. If Only Night Wouldn’t Fall continues his interest in the subject, as well as suggesting how it might be explored from unusual angles. Ostensibly an ensemble documentary with a cast of characters who speak about their own particular diagnosis and more generally, their individual lives, it also has an interest in organisations that work with people facing mental health issues.
We visit a school in Norway for troubled children, learn of one Dutch man’s history of psychosis, and learn of a community in Florida that collects’ residents data as part of a set of preventative measures to help improve health and wellbeing. It’s been a long time since Cash Money Records took over for the ’99 and the 2000, but Juvenile was sharp as ever during his highly anticipated NPR Tiny Desk Concert. During his nearly 30-minute set, the rapper was joined by his longtime producer Mannie Fresh and fellow Louisiana native Jon Batiste.
Fresh encouraged the crowd to cheer on Juvenile as the latter soaked in the enthusiastic response before effortlessly cruising through early classics like “400 Degreez,” “Bling Bling,” and “Ha.” With the backing of a full band and brass section, he continued with later hits like “Set It Off” and “Slow Motion.”
To close out the set, Juvenile was joined by a string section for his signature hit, “Back That Azz Up,” delivering a lively performance that saw the audience shouting along to the chorus. Watch Juvenile’s full Tiny Desk Concert below.

Is Becky G's new song about Sebastian Lletget? On June 28, the 26-year-old singer dropped her highly anticipated collaboration with Gabito Ballesteros, "La Nena," and the empowering track and sexy music video center on a woman choosing to dance through life despite having a broken heart.
In the track, Ballesteros begins by singing in Spanish, "Quiere olvidarse del cabrón que no valora / Que está con ella y a la vez con otra," which translates to, "She wants to forget about the bastard who doesn't value / Who is with her and at the same with another."
Another standout lyric is when Becky shouts: "Mejor sola que mal acompañada" which means, "Better alone than in bad company."
But perhaps the most telling lyrics are in the chorus when Becky and Ballesteros both sing, "Baila sola y si supiera / Que bella es soltera /Lo siento, bebé / Le dedicó su ex, el que no...

John Krasinski is following up on his acclaimed horror directing with a partly animated family film that aims to emulate the child-like wonder of past Steven Spielberg movies. Krasinski is currently working on If, which stands for “Imaginary Friends.” If has already compiled a list of impressive actors lending their voices to the fantasy comedy. Notably, for fans of The Office, the animated movie will be reuniting Krasinski with his former Dunder-Mifflin boss, Steve Carell. The movie has already assembled Krasinski’s spouse, Emily Blunt, as well as Matt Damon, John Stewart, Maya Rudolph, Sam Rockwell, Sebastian Maniscalco, Christopher Meloni, Richard Jenkins, Awkwafina and Vince Vaughn.
Collider recently sat down with Krasinski as he promotes the fourth and final season of his hit action-spy series, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, which will be premiering on Prime Video on June 30. Krasinski discussed with Collider about his excitement to work with Ryan Reynolds,...

Before Margot Robbie took on the role of the world’s most iconic toy figure in the upcoming and hotly anticipated “Barbie”, there was another actress the filmmakers had in mind — Gal Gadot.
The stunning “Wonder Woman” star walked the carpet at Netflix’s Tudum: A Global Fan Event, held in São Paulo, Brazil, and she stopped to talk with Et’s Denny Directo about reports that producers — including Robbie herself — first thought of Gadot for the titular role.
Robbie told Vogue, in an interview published in May, that Gadot was considered, but wasn’t available, and yet served as a sort of template for the character, explaining, “Gal Gadot is Barbie energy.”
“Margot, I love you!” Gadot told Et in response to the actress’ remarks. “I’ll do anything with you, I’ll be [in] anything with you!”

It's not going anywhere.
Raquel Leviss, who has been at the center of the scandal since it shook the reality TV world, plans to tell her story when she gets the chance.
For the past two months, Leviss has been in a mental health facility, Page Six reports, adding that she is "aiming to become a better person."
Vanderpump Rules Season 11 is yet to begin filming for Bravo, and there's still no confirmation on whether Leviss will return.
A source close to the reality TV star said, "Raquel looks forward to sharing her story with the unfiltered truth when she comes out."
It's unclear whether that will be on the show or elsewhere, but it's hard to imagine what the series' next season will look like.

The most chaotic season of reality TV is over; now, it's time to pick up the pieces.
Wednesday's finale of Vanderpump Rules was filled with all the drama we expected after Ariana Madix discovered her boyfriend of nine years, Tom Sandoval, had been sleeping with one of her best friends.
In a New York Times profile timed to the bombshell-ridden conclusion, Madix reflected on her relationship imploding in front of the cameras.
The reality TV star admitted she feels that the public was so engrossed in the drama surrounding Scandoval because she was in the relationship for so long.
She believes that fans saw her and Sandoval as "end game," which means people thought they would be together for a long time.
"I also think the people involved were so duplicitous and deceitful," she said of Sandoval, Leviss and very likely, Tom Schwarz."

Jen Paski took aim at Sen. Ted Cruz, Gov. Greg Abbott and more Republican lawmakers on Sunday night after the Texas politicians once again offered thoughts and prayers, but no gun reform ideas, to victims of the latest mass shooting at an Allen, Texas, shopping mall.
During the latest episode of “Inside With Jen Psaki” on MSNBC, the former White House press secretary honed in on the idea of politicizing tragedy. But, she noted that those who criticize people for politicizing tragedy — which has included Cruz, Abbott and their Republican colleagues just about every time — are the ones who are actually doing so.
In light of the most recent mass shooting in Texas, Psaki first pulled up a clip of Abbott speaking to an NRA convention held in Texas last year, not long after the horrific shooting in Uvalde that killed 19 children and two adults.

Unlike Covid, which forced a sudden and immediate shutdown of feature film productions that ultimately cost the studios anywhere north of $30 million per pic, the Hollywood majors have been planning and bracing for the WGA strike that began today since last fall.
For several of the studios, their theatrical releases dated for 2024 are in post-production, though there are some exceptions.
The contracts for the DGA and SAG-AFTRA do not expire until June 30, and some movie productions are scheduled to start up before then. Studios have figured out workarounds: a handful of tentpole productions are shooting overseas where there isn’t a heavy Teamsters presence, and the possibility of a shoot closing is less likely. Furthermore, studios have either locked scripts for productions, or have gotten sign-off on not having a scribe on set. The priority in case of a shutdown: Getting big action scenes out of the way first. Come Memorial Day weekend,...

Exclusive: Fiona Shaw (Andor), Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice) and Chaske Spencer (The English) have entered production in NYC on Park Avenue, a new indie drama from Sundance alum Gaby Dellal (On a Clear Day), who directs from her script written with Tina Alexis Allen.
A production of Rimsky Productions and Washington Square Films, Park Avenue follows a mother and daughter who, over a fraught six weeks, reveal secrets, unravel lies and ultimately lay bare the ties that bind. Paralyzed by her life wrangling cattle in Alberta, Canada, Charlotte (Waterston) jumps into her Ford Bronco, flees her over-controlling husband, and lands back in her childhood Park Avenue apartment where she takes refuge with her mother Kit (Shaw). Rediscovering the boy she loved, now her grown doorman Anders (Spencer), and the life she left at 18, the mother and daughter explore shared history, unshared truths and find a way to face both love and loss.

Time to brush up on the 5 D’s of “Dodgeball” — “dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge” — because a sequel to the 2004 hit comedy is officially in the works.
Vince Vaughn is returning to star in the sequel, which is in early development at 20th Century Studios. Plot details are being kept under wraps but Jordan VanDina (“The Binge”) has signed on to pen the script, from an idea by Vaughn.
The original film “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story,” followed Peter La Fleur (Vaughn), owner of Average Joe’s Gym, a small and shabby, yet cherished, local haunt frequented by a group of misfits. Paramount is riding incredibly high after their 2022 box office grosses rose past $1 billion for the first time in over a decade and kept its momentum going at CinemaCon with plenty of exciting announcements and sneak peeks.
But before all of that, Chris Aronson showed up to give a little spoonful of tough love.
In his time as head of domestic distribution at 20th Century Fox and now at Paramount, Aronson has been known at CinemaCon both for his humorous entrances at studio presentations and his very candid takes on the movie theater business. This year saw more of both as Aronson emerged from a sewer manhole with some pizza to promote “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” prompting the film’s writer-producer Seth Rogen to joke that it was “quite appropriate” to see a Hollywood exec doing that.

What is "If"? That's a question that's been pretty difficult to answer, especially with a vague and non-descriptive title such as that. It's no fault of our own, however, as John Krasinski's newest directorial feature has been shrouded in secrecy from the moment it was announced. Considering how little we knew about his mega-hit "A Quiet Place" before it was released, this isn't a surprise.
What we do know, however, is that Krasinski has taken a sharp left turn from the auditory horror of "A Quiet Place" and into the realm of children's fantasy. If you held any doubt that this sort of genre pivot couldn't be pulled off, then the attendees at CinemaCon 2023 might beg to differ. Paramount Pictures showed off the first footage of "If" at the panel, which was attended by /Film's Ben Pearson. While the film is still over a year away from release, that...

John Krasinski unveiled the first-ever look at “A Quiet Place: Day One” at CinemaCon, the annual movie theater trade show in Las Vegas.
“One of my great joys has been creating and expanding the ‘Quiet Place’ universe, and I couldn’t be more excited for this next installment,” Krasinki told the audience at Caesars Palace during Paramount’s presentation.
Story details for “Day One,” led by Lupita Nyong’o, have been kept mostly under wraps, but it comes from an original idea from Krasinksi, who directed and co-starred in the first two “A Quiet Place” movies, starring Emily Blunt. The prequel diverges from the Abbott family and explains the origins of the post-apocalyptic world, where people must live in silence in order to hide from creatures that hunt for prey using sound.

Not content to show off its 2023 slate, Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation offered a few sneak peeks at next year’s releases. John Krasinski took to the stage to offer the first look at the next “Quiet Place” movie.
Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (who helmed Nicolas Cage’s “Pig”), the New York-set prequel will star Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou and Denis O’Hare. The producers include Krasinski, Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. Allyson Seeger and Vicki Dee Rock will executive produce.
The footage audiences saw a bustling New York City where Nyong’o is half-asleep on a bus while petting her cat. She steps to the back of the bus only to realize that the world has almost instantly plunged into hell, with ravaged buildings and catastrophic explosions. The rest is a quick montage of Nyong’o trying to survive as the aliens essentially destroy the world.
