Ryan Gosling is back at the box office, but he’s ditching his “Barbie” fur coat for a stuntman’s jumpsuit.
His latest movie, “The Fall Guy,” has arrived in theaters and made $3.15 million in Thursday previews at the box office.
The film is expected to open around $30 million this weekend, with some estimates as high as $35 million or $40 million. It will need to hit hard at the box office and carry good word-of-mouth, because it carries a budget of $130 million.
Gosling stars as seasoned stuntman Colt Seavers in Universal’s “The Fall Guy,” which is based on the ’80s TV show of the same name that starred Lee Majors as a stuntman turned bounty hunter. After a grisly accident, Colt retires from the stunt life and breaks up with his girlfriend and camera operator Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt). However, when Jody makes her directorial debut starring world-famous actor Tom Ryder...

It looks like another Godzilla x Kong movie will have to wait.
Adam Wingard, who directed the last two of the hit Legendary MonsterVerse movies, has lined up a new feature project that will go before any new creature feature.
A24, the one-time scrappy indie that is rapidly scaling up, came out on top of an auction to pick up Onslaught, an action thriller that reteams Wingard with his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett. The two made the cult hits You’re Next and The Guest.
Wingard and Barrett are writing the project with Wingard on board to direct. It is said to have a scope more in line with his early movies, which were all original creations. Details for Onslaught are being kept behind the barricades, but sources describe it as a gonzo action horror thriller that will shoot this fall.

Following the success of “The Curse,” Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder and A24 are teaming up again to take on the cutthroat world of chess.
The studio has won the rights to the hot feature package “Checkmate,” based on a book proposal by author Ben Mezrich, whose works were adapted into “The Social Network” and “Dumb Money.”
The story centers on what has been described as the “biggest scandal in the history of chess,” following the controversial 2022 head-to-head match between Grandmasters Magnus Carlsen, then world champion, and Hans Niemann, during which the latter was accused of cheating.
After a competitive situation in which multiple studios and streamers showed interest in the project, A24 nabbed the rights thanks to a reported seven-figure offer. The deals are still in the works, but Fielder is currently attached to direct, with Stone on board to produce with her husband and partner Dave McCary under their Fruit Tree banner.

Universal Pictures has found its director for the high-priority Leonardo da Vinci film. “All of Us Strangers” helmer Andrew Haigh has signed on to direct and adapt Walter Isaacson’s acclaimed biography of the Renaissance man.
Based on thousands of pages from Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, Isaacson’s book became one of the hottest literary properties when it hit the market in 2017. At the time, Universal was outbid by Paramount, which developed the project with Leonardo DiCaprio for years before putting it in turnaround. Universal quietly picked it up last year. The runaway bestseller connects da Vinci’s transcendent art, which includes the Mona Lisa painting hanging in the Louvre, to his trailblazing science — and shows how his genius was driven by an insatiable curiosity, careful observation and a whimsical imagination. The Italian icon lived from 1452-1519 during the height of the Renaissance,...

A line of dialogue in The Fall Guy is already causing discourse among some viewers, prior to it opening in theaters.
In the David Leitch-directed action-comedy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, Hannah Waddingham’s character, Gail Meyer, at one point makes a reference to Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s turbulent relationship.
In the scene, Waddingham, who plays an executive producer in the movie, reportedly walks into a trailer while looking disheveled and tells director Jody Moreno (Blunt), “It’s like Amber and Johnny were just in here.”
Some viewers have since taken to social media to criticize the line, with one user writing on X (formerly Twitter), “‘The Fall Guy’ made a distasteful “joke” about the domestic abuse amber suffered at the hands of johnny. it’s 2024, why are we writing these kinds of lines into movies? nasty work.”

Kevin Spacey has fired back at new allegations of sexual harassment and assault set to be heard as part of a Channel 4 documentary, Spacey Unmasked, set to premiere in the U.K. on May 6-7.
“I’ve got nothing left to hide,” Spacey told former U.K. broadcaster Dan Wootton during a 2 hour, 20 minutes interview entitled Kevin Spacey: Right of Reply, which streamed on X (formerly Twitter).
Having seen off earlier allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior in civil and criminal court cases in the U.S. and the UK, Spacey said he refused to stand by and stay silent as fresh allegations were made in the Channel 4 documentary. “I can’t go through this again, allowing myself to be basically attacked without defending myself as well,” he told Wootton.
While accepting that he may have flirted or hooked up with fellow actors in the past, Spacey denied that he had ever done anything illegal.

Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman of Gotham Group and Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill, who produced the original trilogy, are back to produce this one. Wes Ball, who directed the original trilogy, will also be involved as a producer.

A muse, a mother, a fashionista, an actor, a rock ‘n’ roll icon — it’s hard to describe exactly why Anita Pallenberg remains such a compelling figure more than a half-century after the captivating blonde sang backing vocals on the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil” and starred in movies like “Performance” and “Barbarella.”
The new documentary “Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg” delves into both the beautiful and tragic moments of her eventful life with the help of a treasure trove of home movies and interviews, as well as an unpublished memoir penned by Pallenberg and narrated by Scarlett Johansson. The footage is coupled with interviews of the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards, with whom she had a significant relationship, their children Marlon and Angela Richards, director Volker Schlondorff, who cast her in some of his films, and her former friends and associates.

In a preview from his conversation with Willie Geist for Sunday Today, Chris Pine looked back at how much his role as Anne Hathaway’s love interest in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement impacted his career.
Pine recalled the exact moment he got the life-changing call saying he had been cast as Nicholas Devereaux. He was on the freeway, driving his 1972 BMW that he owned since he was 16, at a time in his life when he had only booked small TV roles.
“I got a call from my agent saying I booked the job, and I pulled over to the side of the freeway, and they said, ‘You’re getting paid $65,000,'” said the actor. “It was like they had just told me I’d make $15 million.”
Pine shared that getting the call was “absolutely earth-shattering” as he was severely struggling financially. “I had an overdraft on my bank account.

After weeks of negotiations, Skydance’s proposed merger with Paramount Global appears to be on the ropes.
Paramount’s special board committee appears to have cooled on the offer, which would have seen the David Ellison-led studio, joined by financial partners RedBird Capital and Kkr, acquire controlling shareholder Shari Redstone’s stake in the company and then merge Skydance into Paramount, keeping it as a publicly-traded company, with new leadership at the helm.
Skydance had been in a 30-day exclusive negotiating window, and had proposed a revised offer last weekend that would have offered some sweeteners for Paramount common shareholders, some of whom had been vocally opposed to the deal. That window ends today, and is not likely to be extended.
Another source close to the deal says that talks between the sides continue.
Paramount has another offer on the table: A $26 billion all-cash deal from Apollo and Sony Pictures.

The child actors from “Mrs. Doubtfire” recently reunited nearly 31 years after the movie’s release for a joint interview on the “Brotherly Love” podcast, where Lisa Jakub revealed that Robin Williams wrote a letter to her school principal when she got expelled for taking time off to star in the blockbuster comedy film (via Entertainment Weekly). Jakub starred in the movie as Lydia Hillard, the eldest daughter of Williams and Sally Field’s characters.
“I got thrown out of high school on ‘Doubtfire,'” Jakub told her costars Matthew Lawrence (who played middle child Christopher) and Mara Wilson. “I’m Canadian. I was attending high school in Canada, then I left for four months to film the movie. We were going to set up this system, pre-internet, where I’d mail my school work back and forth to the school. In 2022, Nicholas Galitzine was on the main stage of “Coachella”, flanked by bandmates Jaiden Anthony, Raymond Cham Jr., Vik White, and Dakota Adan.
Surrounding them were 5,000 screaming fans, chanting at the top of their lungs, “August Moon! August Moon! August Moon!” For most of the guys, who are professional dancers, this was somewhat familiar, they’d performed for much bigger audiences, supporting stars like Beyoncé and Britney Spears, and dancing on national TV. But for Galitzine, this was all brand new.
Under the spotlight, the actor was playing the role of a world famous pop star — one fifth of a massively successful (fictional) boy band. So while the crowd was real, it helped that they weren’t actually in Indio, California for their set, but a couple thousand miles away on a chilly December morning in Atlanta, filming scenes for the Prime Video rom-com film, The Idea of You.

Facing criticism from California’s political leaders, school faculty and students, UCLA’s chancellor is placing blame for the upheaval that overtook the university’s campus this week on “instigators” and “outside agitators” whose “terrifying” violent acts ultimately ended the weeks of pro-Palestine protests with the removal of an encampment by police and hundreds of arrests on campus.
The arrests of pro-Palestine protesters on Thursday at UCLA, which is estimated at over 200, came after officers in riot gear descended on the campus to dismantle the encampment erected on April 25 by the Uc Divest Coalition and Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA. Before he returns to the role of Spider-Man’s best friend, “Guy in the Chair” and emergency sorcerer, Jacob Batalon is deepening his relationship with Sony Pictures. Today, Batalon is back on the big screen in the studio’s supernatural horror film, Tarot. Written and directed by Anna Halberg and Spenser Cohen, Tarot chronicles seven college friends whose individual tarot card readings come to life in deadly fashion. Batalon plays Paxton, the impulsive life of the party within his friend group.
Tarot partially utilizes Batalon as comic relief, a role that he’s perfected since breaking out in Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), but the film also allowed him to play afraid, something young actors often cite as being the most difficult emotion to play given the mechanics of a film set.

And Redstone is said to have reluctantly concluded that a deal with David Ellison’s Skydance, a longtime partner of Paramount Pictures, will not be possible.
As of Friday morning, the special committee established by Paramount Global’s board to evaluate M&a proposals had not notified Skydance one way or the other about its best and final offer, which would involve Skydance acquiring Redstone’s National Amusements Inc. and merging Skydance and Paramount Global, per a source familiar with the talks. The exclusive negotiating window between Skydance and the Paramount Global board...

The opening, multi-minute shot of “Evil Does Not Exist” stares upwards at the trees, floating backwards through the forest, while Eiko Ishibashi’s haunting score casts a spell on us. It’s contemplative but not peaceful; weirdly arresting, like a thriller with no tangible thrills. It’s almost a shock when the story kicks in, but writer/director Ryusuke Hamaguchi looks at his characters much the same way. He’s fascinated and concerned by who they are and what they might do, and he watches them float by.
Hamaguchi’s previous film, “Drive My Car,” was a nearly three-hour drama about a man directing a stage version of Anton Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya” where every character speaks a different language. Along the way, he formed a relationship with his production-mandated chauffeur who — fittingly enough — drives his car, as they listen to recordings of his recently-deceased wife reading the script. You...

Andy Serkis and Matt Reeves, who collaborated on 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, may not lead the new adaptation, but still played a role in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
At the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Thursday, Kingdom director Wes Ball recounted how at the very beginning of working on the project, “I had dinner with Matt because I had known him from our movie Mouse Guard together and I told him all these ideas we were doing. He was literally about to get on a plane to go do Batman, and after that dinner I felt like we were ready to go make this movie and have the support to just go for it. And the same thing with Andy, when we got him involved.”

“Night Court” will be back in session.
The Melissa Rauch-led series has been renewed for a third season at NBC, the network announced Friday. Rauch stars in the reboot series as judge Abby Stone, who presides over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment, with original cast member John Larroquette reprising his role as former night court district attorney Dan Fielding.
After debuting its freshman season in January 2023, “Night Court” returned for its second season in December 2023 following the Hollywood strikes. The workplace comedy currently ranks as NBC’s most-watched primetime comedy in both total viewers and the 18-49 demo, with Season 2 reaching 24 million viewers across linear and digital platforms to date.
Original cast member Marsha Warfield was reintroduced to fans of the sitcom at the end of Season 1 and reprised her role as Roz again for the Season 2 finale, which saw Roz tie the knot with her fiancé...

NBC has delivered a favorable verdict to Night Court.
The network has picked up a third season of its comedy series, a revival of/sequel to the 1984-92 show of the same name. Night Court is the first of NBC’s three current comedies to earn a spot on the 2024-25 schedule; decisions have yet to be made on Lopez vs. Lopez and Extended Family. NBC also has one new comedy, St. Denis Medical, on tap for next season, and a pilot called Happy’s Place starring Reba McEntire.
Night Court averaged 3.73 million viewers in Nielsen’s seven-day linear ratings for its second season — down a good amount from its return in 2023 but still ranking as NBC’s most watched comedy. As with most scripted shows, it picks up a substantial audience boost via streaming; NBC didn’t provide detailed figures (as is usually the case with streaming) but said...
