The Supreme Court decided on Monday not to intervene in a lawsuit seeking to hold the organizer of a Black Lives Matter protest liable for injuries sustained by a police officer who was attacked by a demonstrator. The decision leaves in place an appeals court ruling that effectively renders organizers liable for any illegal act committed by protest attendees in three states: Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
In June of last year, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which oversees the three states, ruled in Doe v. Mckesson that protest organizer...

Ziwe is back with the second half of the second season of her namesake talk show and she has declared a “diversity war.”
“Diversity training isn’t enough, I’m ready to go to diversity war,” Ziwe says in the trailer as she raises an electric chainsaw, which you can watch in the video posted above.
The late-night talk show host returns to make her guests uncomfortable talking about race, politics and social issues. To make it all happen, Ziwe has summed up a whole slate of celebrities. Appearing in the trailer for Season 2 of the show are Drew Barrymore, Bob the Drag Queen, Joel Kim Booster, Wayne Brady, Saturday Night Live’s Michael Che, Julia Fox, Blake Griffin, Deray Mckesson and Glee alum Amber Riley.
One of the questions Ziwe asks Barrymore is where she stands on the Emancipation Proclamation.
“I am for freedom, is that the right answer?...

Ziwe is booked and busy. Fans are already itching to see the guests in the hot seat, as Ziwe is known for asking the tough, and often uncomfortable, questions. Case in point: Chet Hanks' hilariously awkward appearance in the first half of season two. During the interview, Ziwe asked Chet, whose parents are Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, what he thinks about cultural appropriation. In response, the actor,...

The documentary “Kaepernick & America,” which examines the remarkable conflict stirred by former NFL star Colin Kaepernick’s sideline protest, will begin streaming on demand on Fri. Sept. 2.
Directed by Tommy Walker and Ross Hockrow, the documentary made its debut at Tribeca as one of the film festival’s online premieres.
In a statement, Walker explained he was personally captivated the Kaepernick saga and what insights they gleaned about America’s ongoing racial turmoil as they explored the intersection between his protest in the summer of 2016 and the widespread reactions they spurred.
“The film we have made seeks to discover the parallels between the life and activism of Colin Kapaernick and the tumultuous and divisive factors that have colored America’s racial divide,” Walker stated. “It is only partly about Kaepernick, as it actually reveals more about America, the land that reacted so profoundly to such a simple gesture.”

Every few years, a certain segment of America remembers racism. The news jerks them out of a fabricated post-racial stupor and inspires a bundle of emotions: guilt, anxiety, fury. What they do with these feelings often becomes more the subject of headlines and analysis than the precipitating event.
It’s a curious cycle, one that Tommy Walker (Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, God Grew Tired of Us) and Ross Hockrow try to make sense of in their elementary documentary Kaepernick & America. Their earnest efforts might turn off viewers already attuned to the cycles of America’s racial amnesia, but the doc works as a primer for the uninitiated.
At this point, most people are familiar with the vague outlines of Colin Kaepernick’s story, but when the NFL quarterback began protesting police brutality in the summer of 2016, few noticed. It wasn’t...

When poet Cleo Wade and Oscar- and Emmy-nominated writer-producer-director Simon Kinberg (The Martian, X-Men: First Class, The 355, Invasion) got engaged in 2019, the evening was enveloped in art.
A few days before Kinberg proposed — at a get-together at their home — their friend, civil rights activist DeRay Mckesson, sent a photo of the couple to artist Brandon Breaux. The artist in turn created a multicolored drawing based on the photo showing the couple in outline. On the night of the engagement, Mckesson also gave postcard-size prints of the work to guests. “They wrote little things on the back and drew on [them]. It was so sweet,” recalls Wade. “It was a cool way of having art be alive.”
The night was a snapshot of the way the pair approach art collecting, with a focus on works that express freedom and joyfulness. “We both really respond to something that looks really free,” says Wade,...

In 2020, police reformers had many believing that Minneapolis was headed in the right direction.
After Black Lives Matter protests demanded accountability following the murder of George Floyd, a Black man who was murdered by a white officer, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey proposed a series of reforms to address the unrest.
One of the major proposals was to also restrict the use of unannounced raids known as “no-knock warrants” — a controversial practice that allows police to enter a property without announcing their presence beforehand — at one point, there were more than...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Patty,” the penultimate episode of “The Good Place.”
The titular good place on Mike Schur’s philosophical comedy “The Good Place” isn’t a literal place at all but instead a state of mind.
Sure, after four seasons (50 episodes) the characters on the show did take a hot balloon ride to heaven — although the show doesn’t call it that — but when they got there, they quickly realized it was not all it had been cracked up to be. Instead, what would make the time there worth spending was that the souls there believed they could choose when that time came to an end.
Did “The Good Place” just promote death with dignity?

There’s an aspirational thread throughout all of Katy Perry’s best songs: the candy-coated nostalgia of “Teenage Dream,” the fizzy, life-affirming “Firework,” the empowering “Roar.” During the 2017 Witness album cycle, that playful, hopeful energy was shrouded by Perry’s fixation on personal maturity, as she traded her signature soaring vocals and anthemic choruses for an amalgamation of experimental R&b, house and “woke” reggae. Witness was largely viewed by critics as a creative misstep, but for Perry, personally, it seemed to be a necessary transformative period. Release week for...

Today marks Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, which goes beyond the confines of Hollywood. #BlackWomensEqualPayDay is set for Aug. 7 because black women had to work all of 2017 until this day in 2018 to catch up with what white men earned in 2017. Shonda Rhimes, Kerry Washington, Robin Thede and other Hollywood insiders took to Twitter to voice their support for this day that recognizes the gender pay gap.
Rhimes and Washington posted a video of real-life conversations with black women and how the pay gap impacts them. The video comes from Lean In, an organization that empowers women to achieve their ambitions. According to the video and the website, black women in the U.S. are paid 38% less than white men and 21% less than white women.
In addition to Rhimes, Washington and comedian Thede, celebrities tweeted support for #BlackWomensEqualPayDay. Orange is the New Black actress Danielle Brooks tweeted, “This isn’t...

From the outside, the success of the #BlackPantherChallenge — which is raising money for kids around the country to see “Black Panther” in theaters — has seemed like one of those grassroots efforts that caught fire on social media and became a viral national sensation. Before it became an official GoFundMe with over 400 local campaigns that raised over $400,000, New York marketing consultant Frederick Joseph launched the Challenge as a local effort for Harlem’s Boys and Girls Club. However, the campaign’s trajectory was anything but accidental.
“I always envisioned it going national, but strategically I needed a base for it just to be the spark,” said Joseph in an interview with IndieWire. “With Harlem being such a historically black community and this film being such a historic film in terms of black representation, and feminist representation as well, I just wanted to start it there because I knew people would be most receptive.

TV hosts get welcomed into people’s living rooms on a regular basis. With “I Love You, America,” Sarah Silverman is making that a two-way invitation. The set of Hulu’s new show features a plaid-draped couch, Abe Lincoln tchotchkes, and roadside diner signs, all capped off by a pull-down Murphy bed.
As always, Silverman is using her personal comedic approach to challenge what certain audiences find acceptable, but particularly in this new venture, she wants people to feel comfortable first.
“This is really everything I dreamed it could be. It doesn’t mean it’s gonna be even anyone else’s cup of tea, but it really is mine. I wanted it to be of this moment in time,” Silverman said in a recent interview with IndieWire.
In its opening episodes, Silverman’s format-fluid interview/commentary/documentary project has ventured out from some familiar coastal climes to different places across the country.

Older Millennials are typically hesitant to claim the much-maligned label, but slap some “Sister Act” on the TV and you’ll soon see who was born after 1982. One look at Whoopi Goldberg in that nun’s habit, and they won’t be able to stop from singing, “Oh Happy Day.” It’s been 25 years since the comedy first debuted, and Goldberg used her post on “The View” to reunite members of the original cast for a rousing version of “I Will Follow Him.”
Goldberg was joined by supporting players Kathy Najimy and Wendy Makkena, as well as Sheri Izzard, Darlene Koldenhoven, Beth Fowler (of “Orange is The New Black” renown), Andrea Robinson, and Prudence Holmes. The cast was backed up by a few extra choir members to round out the harmonies, which might not have been a bad idea judging from how some of their voices have aged. One thing...

President Donald Trump drew swift and harsh criticism after addressing the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday, with critics calling him out on a number of fronts. Many detractors took issue with Trump condemning the violence “on many sides,” without specifically calling out the white nationalists whose rally sparked the unrest. “Did Trump really say that he condemns the violence on ‘many sides’? The white folks with tiki torches brought the violence, own it,” activist DeRay Mckesson weighed in. “War for the Planet of the Apes” (20th Century Fox), the third entry in the third round of the science-fiction series that launched in 1968, achieved a respectable if not spectacular $56.5 million opening, notching the top slot against the second weekend of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (Sony), which dropped an unexpectedly large 61 per cent.

Remarkable and unprecedented for summertime play, three of the top five films this weekend “Apes,” “Baby Driver” (Sony) and “The Big Sick” (Lionsgate) are critically acclaimed wide releases with Metacritic scores over 80. That range of specialized titles and awards contenders is far from typical summer fare.
“Apes” received the top reviews of this well-regarded trio. The advance buzz was big enough to suggest an opening over $70 million. Instead, it is the lowest — in adjusted grosses, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” did the equivalent of $61 million,...

“War for the Planet of the Apes” just opened to strong box-office returns and highly positive reviews, but its arrival in theaters hasn’t been entirely controversy-free. A number of people who watched the trailer noticed that Bad Ape (voiced by Steve Zahn) wears a blue vest similar to that of civil-rights activist DeRay Mckesson, leading some to wonder about the film’s racial politics.

McKesson has become known for dressing in a blue vest. “Given the history of rendering black people as apes, I’m offended & appalled by the lack of consciousness in Hollywood,” the civil rights activist wrote in the tweets, which were displayed.

Comedy Central’s newest wave of programming has been built around individuals, doubling down on the past achievements of their comedian hosts. Moshe Kasher’s “Problematic” grew out of complex discussions in a public forum. “The Jim Jefferies Show” is an extension of his frequent call-outs of strange behavior both in America and abroad. One of the reasons the network’s newest series, “Hood Adjacent,” works so well is that it comes from host James Davis’ similarly distinct perspective, delivered with fast-paced, sly cultural commentary that’s heavy on laughs.
A blended mix of stand-up, monologue, “Daily Show”-style field pieces, genre parodies and interviews with notable figures, “Hood Adjacent” uses all of these comedic tools to look at different corners of the black experience, in the area of Los Angeles near where Davis was raised and beyond. Though the format approach changes by subject — ranging from food to police...

The National Rifle Association is standing by an ad from April that recently came under fire from those who say the clip incites violence. In the video, first uploaded in April, NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch targets the media and Hollywood’s “violence of lies,” saying that organization will fight back with a “clenched fist of truth.” After being shared again on the NRA’s Facebook page earlier this month, the ad has been criticized by those who say it aims to incite violence against liberals. “This NRA ad is an open call to violence to protect white supremacy,” activist Deray McKesson wrote on Twitter.
