The Swarm TV series was produced overseas and was the most expensive German TV production (produced in English) of all time. Unfortunately, expense doesn't always translate into big ratings. The CW is now focusing on airing acquired and low-cost programming and has pulled shows that have drawn low ratings. Even if a second season is made, there's no guarantee that the network will pick it up. Will The Swarm be cancelled or renewed? Stay tuned.

She wowed fans as Sansa Stark in "Game of Thrones" which saw her nominated for an Emmy, starred alongside Colin Firth and Toni Colette in the eight-part drama "The Staircase", and most recently took on a comedic role in Netflix's "Do Revenge". Now, we've got our first look at Sophie Turner in the gritty upcoming six-part drama,"Joan," based on a true story of the notorious jewel thief, Joan Hannington.
On May 18, ITV released the first photo of Turner as she takes on the lead role of Hannington with her eclectic sense of style and bleached blonde hair, channeling the '80s when the series is set. Alongside the star is actor Frank Dillane, who plays Boisie, a London antiques dealer. They are standing in front of an American-inspired diner and a Ford Capri.

The Swarm, the big-budget series based on the Frank Schätzing best-seller and executive produced by Game of Thrones producer Frank Doelger, has landed with The CW in the U.S..
The deal sees the Beta Film and Zdf Studios thriller headed to American audiences after debuting at the Berlin Film Festival and recently being acquired by Sky for the U.K. and Spain’s Movistar+ channel. The U.S. deal also comes amid the WGA writers strike, when the appeal of foreign TV product for American buyers is expected to grow.
The Swarm chronicles the struggle of humankind against an unknown enemy that lives in the depths of the sea. Just as the reckless treatment of the oceans threatens the natural habitat of this mysterious collective, it strikes back.
The series stars Cécile de France, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Jack Greenlees, Lydia Wilson, Krista Kosonen, Alexander Karim, Leonie Benesch and Barbara Sukowa.

Why complicate matters? “The Swarm” – which premiered its first three episodes at the Berlinale Series – is one of those expensive pan-global coproductions necessitating copious logistics, not least a carefully observed quota of performers from each territory pumping money into the production pot. Its opener generates a not inconsiderable carbon footprint, whisking us from Peru to Canada and thence the Scottish Highlands.
The series title, meanwhile, invites confusion with not just 1978’s infamous Michael Caine venture – a disaster movie in all senses – but Donald Glover and Janine Nabers’ Prime Video-bound “Swarm,” itself launching next month.
In and of itself, however, this eight-parter proves reassuringly straightforward and familiar. Its briny pulp – dredged from Frank Schätzing’s 2004 novel, a Central European bestseller originally earmarked for big-screen adaptation by the late Dino De Laurentiis – preys heavily on viewer fears of ecological collapse, and what might be lurking for us all beneath the planet’s watery depths.

“Game of Thrones” producer Frank Doelger, after executive producing “The Swarm” through his Berlin-based Intaglio Films, now has two new high-end shows for the international pipeline in the pipeline: “Concordia” and “Doing Good.”
During a panel at the Series Mania TV festival Doelger described “Concordia” as “a series about a 21st century community which uses cutting AI technology to see if it can create a fairer, safer, society.”
Twenty years after this community has been a huge success, “countries around the world are approaching the founders of this social engineering experiment to found similar communities in their countries,” he added.
And, “as they research the twenty-year history of this community, they discover that this instance of utopia has provided safe homes for immigrants and thousands of refugees seeking a better life. But they also discover the dark secret that led to its founding.”

Wounds, both physical and psychological, become scars with time. But whether those scars are to be hidden or worn as badges of honor — evidence less of past trauma than of subsequent strength and healing — becomes the surprisingly resonant dilemma at the heart of Charlotte Colbert’s witty, weird horror-drama debut, which scooped the First Feature award in Locarno. “She Will” may not be particularly terrifying, except perhaps to abusers, rapists and anyone who’s ever used the phrase “it was a different time” to excuse the sins of their past without reckoning with them, but as a superbly crafted, thematically rich fable, it administers a potent dose of #MeToo vengeance, all while wearing its nasty sense of humor like a red-lipstick grin applied to a perfectly masklike face.

Set in the 1990s in Scotland, the film is about a group of Catholic school girls get an opportunity to go into Edinburgh for a choir competition, but they're more interested in drinking, partying and hooking up than winning the competition. Described as a "must see riot of girl power" in one review quoted in this trailer. This Scottish coming-of-age stars Tallulah Greive, Abigail Lawrie, Marli Siu, Sally Messham, Rona Morison, Eve Austin, Stuart Martin, Jack Greenlees, and Kate Dickie. Sunset Song is renowned English director Terence Davies’ adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s Scottish novel, a drama set in rural Scotland in the years just before and during World War I. Centered on a bright Scottish young woman named Chris, the film is a powerfully moving drama that is at once visually beautiful, in its depiction of the Scottish rural landscape, and realistic in its unblinking portrait of the harshness of working-class farm life and the devastating impact of war.
Agyness Deyn brilliantly plays the lead character, Chris Guthrie, whom we follow from her days as the brightest student in her rural school to her years as a young woman confronting the devastating horror of war from the home front. Chris is a girl who dreams of poetry and of becoming a teacher, and her kind-hearted mother Jean (Daniela Nardini) dotes on her gifted daughter,...

Like his past work, Terence Davies’ Sunset Song sets aglow dusty memories of the past, telling a feminist story of domestic liberation that’s mythological in theme and scale despite taking place in a lonely homestead on the outskirts of rural Scotland in the early 20th century. No one does period drama quite like Davies, and his latest effort is just as transportive and lyrical as his previous work, though the story develops in a sort of inelegant, stilted way that doesn’t pay the strong-willed heroine at its center due justice.
The beating heart of the tale is a peasant farm girl, Chris Guthrie (Agyness Deyn), tender as can be and wise beyond her years. Her strength of spirit and nurturing nature stem from a horrific upbringing under her emotionally and physically abusive father (a heart-stoppingly terrifying Peter Mullan). We watch years pass at the Guthrie home, Blawearie, as...

Despite being one of the most beloved art film directors of the last 30+ years, it’s a shockingly rare occasion that we are blessed with a new picture from filmmaker Terence Davies. With only Of Time And The City, a micro-budget, rarely seen essay film, Davies saw 11 years fall between The House of Mirth and his 2011 film The Deep Blue Sea. Thankfully though, that rate appears to be shrinking as his newest film, Sunset Song, debuts in theaters this weekend, and yet another film entitled A Quiet Passion is running the festival circuit.
But let’s not get ahead of things. Sunset Song premieres in limited release this weekend, and it’s yet another stunning achievement from one of the true masters of this era. Based on Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s 1932 novel of the same name, Song introduces us to Chris Guthrie, a young woman living with her family on...

"I am not frightened of you!" The official UK trailer has debuted for Terence Davis' new period romantic drama Sunset Song, about a daughter of a Scottish farmer coming of age during the early 1900s. Agyness Deyn stars as Chris Guthrie, and it's told as a sort of a triptych, with one segment focusing on her abusive father, the next when she meets and falls in love and eventually marries Ewan, played by Kevin Guthrie; finally, he goes off to fight in World War I and comes back shellshocked and violent, resembling her father. The cast includes Peter Mullan, Jack Greenlees, Niall Greig Fulton and Ian Pirie. This looks very powerful. Here's the first official trailer for Terence Davies' Sunset Song, from The Guardian (via The Film Stage): The daughter of a Scottish farmer comes of age in the early 1900s.
