Representing Mexico once more at the Oscars with her second film, “Totem,” Lila Avilés has proven that the critical success of her debut feature, “The Chambermaid,” was not a fluke.
The former actress, who worked in virtually all areas of film production and directed theater before venturing into filmmaking, has been hailed as part of the new wave of female talent shaping Mexican cinema. “Since I was a little girl, I always loved writing, creating my plays. And obviously, I’ve always had a fixation with photography. I hope to hold an exhibition someday, too,” she says.
Aside from racking up a slew of accolades since its world premiere at the Berlinale, “Totem” has been selected by the Independent Spirit Awards as one of five major contenders for its international film category.

The Last Wagon is a Mexican movie directed by Ernesto Contreras and starring Adriana Barraza and Guillermo Villegas.
This movie is all about education and the importance of being a dedicated teacher. It’s the kind of film that has a strong message to teach us and inspire us to learn. If you’re someone who enjoys learning life lessons and exploring themes of compassion, fairness, and the goodness of people, then you’ll definitely want to check this movie out.
About the film
This film is technically well-made, but it doesn’t focus on displaying its technical virtues. Instead, it aims to teach us about life and evoke a range of emotions. It pays tribute to teachers and uses melodrama to achieve its goals.
Although this may not appeal to everyone, the film has a good screenplay and takes us on an interesting journey of discovery. The attention to...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Resort Season 1 Episode 4, “A History of Forgetting.”] If you thought you knew The Resort, Episode 4 just changed everything. It was the Baltasar and Alex show from start to finish. Viewers met the 2022 Baltasar in Episode 3 when he scuffled with Emma (Cristin Milioti) and Noah (William Jackson Harper). Luckily, Emma didn’t accidentally kill him, because the black sheep of the Frias family had almost all of the answers they were looking for. The episode is mostly told in flashback with narrations from Méndez. He takes Emma and Noah back to the glory days of the now shut down Oceana Vista, giving much needed context behind Alex’s sticky note-strewn penthouse and the seemingly meaningless mural. We see the beginnings of Baltasar, Alex, and Luna’s (Gabriela Cartol) friendship during the hotel’s five-year prime, ...

In Peacock’s The Resort, a cold case gives a disenchanted couple reason to hang on a while longer.
Cristin Milioti and William Jackson Harper star as Emma and Noah Reid, whose 10-year matrimony is in desperate need of a tuneup by the time their shuttle drops them off at Bahia del Paraiso. On their first night, Noah passes out on the couch and Emma heads to the pool, where she takes an online quiz to determine whether she should end the relationship. However, the last question — “When you think of your future, is your spouse in it?” — stops her dead in her tracks.

To say that “The Resort” has more to offer than it seems is saying something, considering just how much it already has at first glance. Created by “Palm Springs” writer Andy Siara, and with a stacked cast led by the always killer Caitlin Milioti and William Jackson Harper, the series unpacks a mystery that only gets wilder, deeper, and more disorienting with each passing episode. One of the year’s most intriguing TV surprises, “The Resort” will deserve a bigger audience than it’ll likely get on Peacock.
In the beginning, Siara and Allison Miller’s “The Resort” presents itself as a relatively straightforward story, albeit one unfolding in two parallel timelines. In 2007, Violet (Nina Bloomgarden) and Sam (Skyler Gisondo) meet at a resort in Mexico before disappearing into thin air the night before a catastrophic hurricane. In 2022, Emma (Milioti) and her husband Noah (Harper) stumble upon the first clue...

We’ve finally got some answers about Andy Siara’s upcoming Peacock series “The Resort.”
A trailer for the comedic thriller released Wednesday shows Cristin Milioti and William Jackson Harper trying to solve a case about two young people who went missing from a resort 15 years earlier, while they’re on a vacation to celebrate their 10th anniversary.
As the mystery starts to unfold, they realize things might be more sinister than they imagined. (You can watch the full trailer above.)
Earlier this month, Peacock released a few first look images that left us with a lot more questions than answers. The trailer helps piece together more about the circumstances of the mystery at hand, though how they become so embroiled in it remains to be seen.

Global streamer Starzplay and L.A.-based Spanish-language streaming platform Pantaya have re-teamed with U.K. production-distribution giant Fremantle and the Larraín brothers’ Fabula on sci-fi miniseries “The Shelter” (“El Refugio”).
Starring Alberto Guerra (“La Jauria”) and Ana Claudia Talancón (“Como Caído del Cielo”) and directed by Argentina’s Pablo Fendrik (“El Ardor”), “The Shelter” wraps principal photography this week after 10 weeks of filming in rural areas around Santiago de Chile.
In industry terms, “The Shelter” forms part of a burgeoning axis between like-minded and complementary players in the U.S., Latin America and the U.K. who have been involved in some of the most exciting, relevant and artistically ambitious of recent Spanish-language dramas hitting screens or in the pipeline, whether “La Jauría,” “Señorita 89” – where all four companies partner – or “Express.”
The series captures Fendrik on tremendous TV form after making “Amongst Men” and “The Bronze Garden,” both for HBO Latin America.

While we aim to discuss a wide breadth of films each year, few things give us more pleasure than the arrival of bold, new voices. It’s why we venture to festivals and pore over a variety of different features that might bring to light some emerging talent. This year was an especially notable time for new directors making their stamp, and we’re highlighting the handful of 2019 debuts that most impressed us.
Below, one can check out a list spanning a variety of different genres and many are available to stream here. In years to come, take note as these helmers (hopefully) ascend.
Aniara (Pella Kågerman & Hugo Lilja)
The title shares its name with a city-size spacecraft ferrying humans from Earth to Mars in barely three weeks. It’s a routine trip that’s never run into problems with many passengers already having family on the red planet to greet them upon arrival.

Eight years ago, self-taught Mexican filmmaker Lila Avilés came across a photography book by visual artist Sophie Calle titled “Hotel.” It featured images of the garbage and objects guests left behind at a hotel in Venice, Italy. From these traces of absence, Avilés realized she could construct a profile of the person who once stayed there.
As Avilés considered the people who enter these private spaces, collect the remnants of their lives, and fix them up for the next occupant, these ingredients became the basis for a stage play — and that, in turn, gave way to the screenplay for her first feature, “The Chambermaid,” which she co-wrote with Juan Carlos Marquéz.
The captivating film is now Mexico’s Oscar contender in the newly renamed Best International Feature Film category, after premiering at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival followed by an extensive, globe-trekking festival run. Picked up by Kino Lorber, “The Chambermaid” opened in U.

A Bread Factory (Patrick Wang)
With a small theatrical release and its runtime of four hours (split across two parts) it’s not particularly surprising that Patrick Wang’s A Bread Factory went overlooked last fall, but one should seek it out–and it’s now finally arriving on streaming. One of the best American indies of the year, it is a Rivettian look at an upstate theater company that takes both an authentic look at the mechanics of survival in the arts and a fanciful approach at showing the joy of performance. I don’t imagine the entire thing will work for everyone, but there...

Eve works as a maid at the upscale Hotel Presidente Intercontinental in Mexico City. Every room she enters is a chore — changing linens, scrubbing toilets and so on — but also a window into lives more luxurious than her own. Left alone with the affairs of the hotel’s rich guests, Eve indulges her curiosity. She doesn’t simply empty waste bins, but spreads out their contents and picks through what she finds there for clues as to how the other half lives. The irony, of course, is that director Lila Avilés has designed her debut feature, “The Chambermaid,” to give audiences the opposite opportunity, inviting us to step into the shoes of an invisible woman for two hours, and as such, her film is a rare and special thing.
In the real world, someone like Eve might be considered “common,” but as the protagonist of her own motion picture — imbued,...

Knocking on doors expecting no one to answer is a daily routine for housekeeping staff at hotels local and remote. Their intense physical labor is unseen and taken for granted, almost as if magically performed outside the vision of its beneficiaries, earns them no glory. Unnoticed, they proceed to the next empty scene in disarray. More than merely dignifying their toil, Lila Avilés’ marvelously honest first feature “The Chambermaid” subtly counteracts such dehumanization.
For her sympathetically achieved big-screen debut, Avilés — who honed her skills as a theater director prior to jumping into the film arena — forged an observational character study on 24-year-old chambermaid Eve, short for Evelia, employed at a lavish Mexico City hotel catering mostly to affluent international visitors.
Of few words but purposefully active in shaping her future, Eve channels internalized resilience to persevere under grueling conditions. Above-average dedication shines through her impeccable cleaning prowess room after room.

In the film festival year of 2018, there were a pair of films hailing from Mexico that broached a text that relates to elitism, classism, and a certain servitude. The Chambermaid wears its social politics of its uniform’s sleeves via a text about an almost unground day to day operations of the hospitality industry via the no-name army of folks who keep a several star hotel afloat. In the Lila Aviles’ directorial debut, the hopes and dreams for a better future are witnessed in the quotidian of Evelia played by Gabriela Cartol. "Eve, do you copy?" Kino Lorber has debuted an official trailer for the indie drama The Chambermaid, the feature directorial debut of Mexican filmmaker Lila Avilés who comes from the theater world. Not to be confused with Park Chan-wook's The Handmaiden or that Vietnamese ghost film The Housemaid, this film is set in Mexico City and is about a chambermaid working at one of the city's most luxurious hotels. "As with Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, set in the same city, The Chambermaid salutes the invisible women caretakers who are the hard-working backbone of society." Gabriela Cartol stars as Eve, and the small cast includes Teresa Sánchez. This premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, so this trailer features a few quotes from critics who praised it. Looks like an intimate, honest drama about the forgotten workers of the world. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Lila Avilés' The Chambermaid,...

One of the most striking directorial debuts of the year is Lila Avilés’s The Chambermaid which invites a keen look at the class divide in a luxury Mexico City hotel. Brimming with humanity, we follow Evelina (Gabriela Cartol), a chambermaid as she balances her workload, her dreams, and her fantasies dozens of stories above her home life which, in a clever decision, we never see. After a festival tour including Tiff, Nd/Nf, AFI Fest, San Francisco Film Festival (where it won the top prize), and Morelia Film Festival (where it won Best Mexican Film), Kino Lorber will release it next month and we’re pleased to premiere the U.S. trailer and poster.

The Chambermaid
Gabriela Cartol stars in The Chambermaid, which screened in competition at this year's Marrakech Film Festival. The film - Lila Avilés' directorial début - sees Cartol star as Eve, a maid in an upmarket Mexican hotel, where each of the hotel rooms opens into its own little world. It's an intense character study of Eve as she tries to work her way up, while gradually losing some of her shyness around the other hotel staff.
I caught up with Cartol in Marrakech to talk about the film, the craftsmanship of being a chambermaid and her hopes for her career.
How did you come to be involved in The Chambermaid?
I did a casting because Lila saw me another film called in La Tirisia, which is another sort of festival film. When she called me for the casting. I read some scenes and I knew where to 'get' the.

New York-based Kino Lorber has taken North American rights to “The Chambermaid,” the feature debut of Mexico’s Lila Aviles that took the Best Film and the Warrior of the Press awards at Morelia Intl. Film Festival last week.

Set entirely within the confines of a luxurious Mexico City hotel, mostly in rooms and service corridors, The Chambermaid is a fascinating observational drama and occasional allegory for the haves and have-nots. Gabriela Cartol stars as Evelina, a 24-year old single mother working on her Ged in a program provided (and later canceled) by the hotel’s union.
Like Blue Crush, another film that contained explicit scenes of hotel maids cleaning up after guests, The Chambermaid doesn’t shy away from the usual demands of the job, from a guest who insists on having his room stocked with five times the amenities he needs to a wealthy Argentina woman who calls Eveline to her room to essentially babysit. When her son takes to Eveline, she’s given a tentative offer to leave the hotel behind for a new life in Argentina.

The ChambermaidBulbul Can Sing (2018), Indian director Rima Das’s third feature, is the sort of film that cloaks its artistry in a ragged naturalism, and for much of its length I thought the raggedness was too high a price to pay. Set in Das’s home state of Assam, the film centers on three school friends whose problems and aspirations are not so urgent that they distract us from Das’s documentation of village life and Assam’s green landscapes. Das’s eye for terrain and atmosphere, aided by a raw soundtrack that sacrifices polish for immediacy, is often stunning; and the film benefits from putting itself at the mercy of natural and social phenomena, as in a remarkable sequence of a torrential rainstorm in Assam’s open fields, with the protagonists sharing long-shot compositions with villagers who may have wandered into the background unwittingly. On the minus side, the...

Madrid — In a strong year for Mexican cinema – think Sebastián Hofmann’s “Time Share,” Alfonso Ruizpalacios’ “Museo” – the world premiere at Venice of the latest films by two of Mexico’s biggest names – Alfonso Cuarón and Carlos Reygadas – shouldn’t distract from another narrative: the ever increasing number of movies by Mexican women directors hitting major festivals, scoring deals and winning post-production plaudits.
