A couple of years ago, a cinematic event happened so wondrous, so monumental that you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing about it. That event was The McConaissance, the return from rom-com and failed blockbuster obscurity of Texas’ finest Matthew McConaughey. Freed from the shackles of getting his shirt off and romancing some of Hollywood’s finest actresses, McConaughey excelled in Mud, Killer Joe, True Detective and his Oscar-winning turn in Dallas Buyers Club.
But since that celebratory evening, the actor has found his subsequent projects fall a little short (Free State of Jones and The Sea of Trees flopped), but it’s with great relish (and relief) then to say that Gold is his return to top form – and the realms of “method” – with a superb performance that is one of the best of the year.

Loosely inspired by the story of David Walsh and the Bre-x Minerals mining scandal in the 1990’s, Gold is director Stephen Gaghan’s first wide release directorial effort since Syriana over a decade ago. Unlike that film though, Gaghan didn’t handle writing duties here, and quality may have suffered because of it.
Scripted intricacies in Gold are not nearly as incisive and sophisticated as previous Gaghan efforts like Syriana or his Oscar-winning screenplay for Traffic. Instead, writers Patrick Massett and John Zinman constantly rely on fortune cookie-style dialogue to hammer home messages that never reach the profoundness they so desire. It’s still a fascinating story, with a topsy-turvy third act that’s fairly engaging finale if you weren’t already familiar with the real life scandal, but what really saves this film from mediocrity starts and ends with Matthew McConaughey.

Inspired by a true story, the disappointing Gold stars Mathew McConaughey as Kenny Wells, who in the late 1980’s inherited the Washoe Mining Company in Reno, Nevada from his father (Craig T. Nelson). He’s such a failure that he’s soon running it from the back of the restaurant where his devoted girlfriend Kaylene (Bryce Dallas Howard) waits tables. But Kenny’s fortunes appear to change when he teams up with experienced geologist, Michael Acosta (Édgar Ramírez). The pair head to the jungles of Indonesia where, under the watchful eye of the Suharto regime, and after Kenny almost dies from malaria, the pair announce a major gold strike, the “largest of the decade”. Washoe’s stock soars as everybody vies for a piece of the action.

Matthew McConaughey dives into his role as mad-dog prospector Kenny Wells like a starving man sitting down to a feast. As a movie, Gold is slim pickings. But McConaughey keeps you riveted. Based loosely on a 1990's gold-mining scandal involving John Felderhof, who partnered with a Filipino geologist Michael de Guzman to mine a mineral fortune in the Indonesian jungles, the movie changes names and dates and messes with the facts at will. Why? Director Steve Gaghan (Syriana) and screenwriters Patrick Massett and John Zinman (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) apparently...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Not a terrible excuse for entertainment, just very, very familiar, all paradigms that desperately require a shift, in Hollywood and in the real world. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Do you like money? Do you enjoy movies about men who make lots of money? Do you enjoy watching men get excited about making lots of money? Then have I got a movie for you! Come on down to Gold! If you kinda liked The Big Short and The Wolf of Wall Street but found them a bit too pretentious with their “satire” and their “relevance,” then Gold is just the thing. There’s nothing fancypants here… just underpants, like a potbellied Matthew McConaughey prancing around in tighty whities. Fun for the whole family!

Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez had been working quite steadily with small roles in films like Steven Soderbergh’s Che and Paul Greengrass’ The Bourne Ultimatum. Things really took off for Ramirez when he was cast in Olivier Assayas’ television mini-series Carlos, playing a ruthless kingpin. The five-hour film allowed Ramirez to show a wide range of what he could do as an character, earning him Golden Globe and Emmy nominations.
Since then, Ramirez has worked with David O. Russell (Joy), Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty) and starred as boxing great Roberto Duran in last year’s Hands of Stone.
Now, Ramirez appears opposite Matthew McConaughey in Gold, the Stephen Gaghan-directed film, in which he plays geologist Michael Acosta, who is pulled into the schemes of McConaughey’s Kenny Wells in trying to find gold in Indonesia. Out of all the top actors working today, Matthew McConaughey has undoubtedly had one of the most unique careers. He’s gone from a small yet memorable role in a Richard Linklater movie to being a rom-com mainstay to being a highly sought-after Oscar winner.
McConaughey is returning to Cineplex theatres looking bigger and balder than ever in his upcoming film, Gold. Even filmmaker Stephen Gaghan will admit it’s been far too long since he’s had a movie in theaters with the Oscar-nominated political thriller Syriana. It got him his second Oscar nomination after winning an Oscar for writing Stephen Soderbergh’s Oscar-winning Traffic a few years earlier.
He’s finally back with Gold, a movie loosely based on the real-life Bre-x gold scandal with Matthew McConaughey playing Kenny Wells, a man struggling to keep his father’s mining business alive after his passing. A vision of there being gold in Indonesia, puts him in contact with geologist Michael Acosta (Edgar Ramirez) who believes that he can help Wells find that gold. After a trying start where Kenny almost succumbs to malaria, Acosta finds evidence of gold, which gets many investing in their company, but as with the Bre-x scandal, things weren’t what they seemed.

You’re likely unfamiliar with the Bre-x mining scandal of the 1990s. Gold is counting on that. Like A Beautiful Mind, it’s built itself wholly around a big twist, despite being based on real events which anyone could look up. However, the twist in A Beautiful Mind works because it helps the audience understand how the protagonist can’t trust his own point of view. When John Nash realizes that he’s been hallucinating several other characters, we can understand his disorientation. But Gold’s twist carries no weight because it comes from the movie being told from precisely the wrong point of view.
It’s unavoidable to talk about this without spoiling the plot, and while that usually isn’t a big issue with based-on-a-true-story films, Gold loses a lot of the impact it’s trying to make without the surprise. So if you want to get the most that a weight-gained,...

In 1993, a Filipino prospector named Michael de Guzman emerged from the jungles of Busang, Indonesia claiming to have found one of the largest gold deposits on record — he partnered with a Canadian conglomerate called Bre-x Minerals Ltd., and eventually took the fall for the most famous gold mining scandal of the late 20th century.
In 2011, screenwriters Patrick Massett and John Zinman (“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”) decided to take the Bre-x story, arbitrarily transplant it to the late 1980s, and re-conceive it as a trite rise and fall parable about the seduction of the American Dream — the result, ultimately directed without distinction by Stephen Gaghan (“Syriana”), unfolds like a chintzy ripoff of David O. Russell ripping off Martin Scorsese ripping off real life, a movie that tries to sell us the most boring version of a story that has already been panned for all of its treasure and then some.

"We got a gold mine!" Studiocanal UK has unveiled a second trailer, which they call a new "teaser trailer", for the film Gold - the latest from screenwriter Stephen Gaghan, who also directs. Gold stars Matthew McConaughey as Kenny Wells, and Édgar Ramírez as Michael Acosta, two businessmen who team up to mine for gold in Indonesia. It's based on the 1993 Bre-x Mineral Corporation mining scandal, a fairly recent real story. The full cast includes Bryce Dallas Howard, Joshua Harto, Timothy Simons, Corey Stoll, Toby Kebbell, Bruce Greenwood, Bill Camp and Rachael Taylor. This presents the story much differently than the first trailer, but it does still end on the "I'm touching a tiger!" scene. Hoping this is good. Here's the new UK teaser trailer for Stephen Gaghan's Gold, direct from Studiocanal's YouTube: You can still watch the first official trailer for Stephen Gaghan's Gold here, to see more footage.

Academy Award winner, Lincoln lawyer, and Lincoln spokesman Matthew McConaughey is back and ready to find Gold. The trailer features McConaughey as Kenny Wells, a hapless entrepreneur who improbably strikes it rich; McConaughey, who famously lost weight for The Dallas Buyers Club, reportedly packed on 40 extra pounds to play Wells.
For those underwhelmed by his somber performance in the recent Sea Of Trees, Gold certainly appears to boast a more traditional type-a McConaughey swagger. In addition to his expanded waistline, McConaughey is sporting a skullet, overbite, and a desperate flakiness. It’s that last attribute that seemingly deposits him at a dead end deep in the jungles of Borneo. But that’s where Kenny Wells’ luck finally changes, as he and geologist Michael Acosta (Édgar Ramírez) discover the movie’s titular mineral.

Sad news, Matthew McConaughey fans: the formally six-packed acting adonis won't be looking as svelte as you've come to expect in his latest film, Gold In Manhattan.
Bald, pot-bellied and sporting a suit that would make a Savile Row tailor cry, this is Mm as you've never seen him before.
He's previously lost a lot of weight for Dallas Buyers Club, but this is something quite different.
In the film, he plays unlucky businessman Kenny Wells, who teams-up with geologist Michael Acosta (Édgar Ramírez) to find gold in the Indonesian jungle.
Directed by Syriana helmer Stephen Gaghan, the drama was originally earmarked for Michael Mann, then Spike Lee, before Gaghan took up the reins.
Just to remind anyone how Matthew McConaughey has looked in the past, here's the rom-com veteran in a carefully chosen shot from 2012's Magic Mike.

He has Matthew McConaughey and Edgar Ramirez already aboard and has just added Michelle Williams to the mix.The film, which has a script from Patrick Massett and John Zinman, tells the story of the 1993 Bre-x Corporation mining scandal. The plot follows a rough-around-the-edges prospector David Walsh (McConaughey) who stumbles upon one of the largest gold mines in the world in the Indonesian jungle. You may not be surprised to learn, given the appearance of the word “scandal” before, that it turned out to be bogus. Ramirez is set as geologist Michael Acosta in the true-life tale, while Williams will be his wife, called Jeannette in reality, but whose name may be changed for the movie. Gaghan will start shooting in June in Thailand, New York and New Mexico.
