“The Freedom Orchestra” (working title), a documentary film presented by Clive Myrie, will tell the story of Ukraine’s newly formed Freedom Orchestra. In the midst of the ongoing war with Russia, 75 of Ukraine’s noted musicians have come together to bring a message of defiance and hope. Some of their family members are on the frontlines, and many have fled Ukraine since the war began.
Myrie follows the stories of the musicians from rehearsing, often alone, in Ukraine, to coming together for their first rehearsal as an orchestra in Warsaw for their inaugural concert — ahead of a tour of Europe and the U.S., including a performance at the BBC Proms on July 31.
Myrie said: “There has always been a cultural frontline in this war and I wanted to reflect that struggle. This documentary, I hope, shines a light on Ukraine’s artistic achievements as well as creative spirit,...

Daniel Clowes’ comics creation receives an A-Plus film adaptation through the directorial filter of Terry Zwigoff. The show has more going for it than the bleak alienation of disaffected quasi- gen-Xers — the script offers a depth of character revealing the insecure, hopes and fears behind all the insulting attitudes and behaviors. It’s caustic, funny and also strongly affecting.

African-American film 'Bert Williams: Lime Kiln Club Field Day.' With Williams and Odessa Warren Grey.* Rare, early 20th-century African-American film among San Francisco Silent Film Festival highlights Directed by Edwin Middleton and T. Hayes Hunter, the Biograph Company's Lime Kiln Club Field Day (1913) was the film I most looked forward to at the 2015 edition of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. One hundred years old, unfinished, and destined to be scrapped and tossed into the dust bin, it rose from the ashes. Starring entertainer Bert Williams – whose film appearances have virtually disappeared, but whose legacy lives on – Lime Kiln Club Field Day has become a rare example of African-American life in the first years of the 20th century. In the introduction to the film, the audience was treated to a treasure trove of Black memorabilia: sheet music, stills, promotional material, and newspaper clippings that survive. Details of the...

To mark 100 years since the beginning of WW1, the BFI have released A Night at the Cinema in 1914. The idea behind the film is to recreate the experience of the average cinema goer at the time, and is a blend of newsreels and short films (features weren’t readily available at the time). There’s films such as ‘Austrian Tragedy’, reporting on the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand with footage of the Austro-Hungarian royal family, mixed in with ‘Egypt and Her Defenders’, a travelogue of the landmarks of the country. Of course, no 1914 cinema outing would be complete without Charlie Chaplin, and in this instance A Film Johnnie rounds off the piece, ending on a slightly more uplifting note than how the programme begun – there was a war on, after all.
It’s certainly an exciting and interesting concept. Programming at the time was obviously not crafted the way it is now.

South: Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Glorious Epic of the Antarctic It was surprising to see the large crowd waiting to get into the 2012 San Francisco Silent Film Festival screening of South: Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Glorious Epic of the Antarctic (1920). I did not think that a documentary would interest so many people, but the theater was packed. South — the screening was narrated by Paul McGann — tells the story of the 1914-1916 expedition across the Antarctic, led by explorer Ernest Shackleton on the ship "The Endurance." Shackleton was accompanied by a crew, a kennel of dogs, and photographer Frank Hurley. Whether the Antarctic adventure can be called successful or not, is up for debate. After being locked in ice for nine months, the ship got stuck, eventually shattering and sinking in the Weddell Sea. South‘s most striking scene, in fact, was of the crew watching "The Endurance" crack and fall apart in an icy grave.

The San Francisco Silent Film Festival ticks all of my boxes when it comes to enjoyable filmgoing experiences: it's brilliantly programmed, takes place in a dazzling and comfortable setting, unspools over a compact and encompassable time span, and has a respectful and joyous audience that enriches the experience. And (bonus) it's located in a neighborhood full of enticing and affordable eateries. It's also value for money: for $210, you get a pass to the entire festival, which includes 16 different programs, each featuring live music, ranging from the celebrated English pianist Stephen Horne (a Pordenone regular) to the Matti Bye Ensemble from Sweden, with appearances by the famed Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, as well as other musicians suited for the occasion. I learned a long time ago to attend every program, because even if I'd seen the movie in question before, the live music made it a unique, and uniquely appealing,...

The Stone Roses' 1990 gig at Spike Island and Tim Burton's dead dog are given a new lease of life
Fang to rights
Tim Burton's Frankenweenie – a stop-motion, black-and-white ode to the horror films of his youth – opened the 56th BFI London film festival last week. It was bursting with every horror reference you could think of, as young Victor Frankenstein brings his dead dog Sparky back to life with an experiment for the school science fair.
Burton has lovingly crafted his references – doesn't everything in stop motion require hours of planning and thought? – but a little bat told me that he has actually overlooked one crucial aspect of film-making. In one scene the boy's parents are watching a horror movie on TV as he creeps back from the pet cemetery having dug up his dead pup. The parents (voiced by Catherine O'Hara and Martin Short) are cuddling...
