In 2006 writer-director Dito Montiel broke out with the autobiographical “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints,” ushering in a raw new voice. Inspired by his rough childhood growing up in Astoria, the film’s detailed world building and lived-in characters brought a veracity to the well-worn crime-drama genre. Somehow, two decades and half a dozen films later, everything that made his debut film feel fresh has now curdled like bad milk with his latest pitch black comedy “Riff Raff.”
While Montiel is still a great “actors director,” eliciting grounded, and at times wonderfully mordant, performances from his stacked ensemble cast, the script from John Pollono has stranded them in a film that plays like a copy of a copy of a copy of several better films. One scene is even underscored with music that evokes Martin Scorsese’s “After Hours.” If you’re going to rip something off so blatantly, it...

The entirety of the hit ABC drama series "Lost" just dropped on Netflix, meaning a whole new generation and a whole new audience will get to experience one of the best and most influential shows of the past 20 years through the most popular streaming service on the planet.
These new audiences will be introduced to the highs (like the best music score in TV history) and lows of this drama about castaways having to survive on a mysterious island, and they'll do so years removed from the heated conversations that made this a controversial and incredibly popular show. TV is very different today than it was when this show premiered 20 years ago, in no small part thanks to "Lost" itself. Serialization and expansive mythologies may be commonplace now, but mystery boxes with dozens of ongoing plots providing fuel for dozens of Reddit threads full of speculation weren't the norm back then.

On June 26, 2024, FX on Hulu released the third season of its Emmy-winning comedy series “The Bear.” In the season-opener titled “Tomorrow,” Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) apologizes to Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) for abandoning the team, commends her for her stewardship of the kitchen, and promises never to make the same mistakes again. He also calls Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) to apologize for his tirade. Marcus (Lionel Boyce) learns his mother has died and flashbacks recount Carmy’s time working for renowned chefs at various restaurants, as well as Mikey’s (Jon Bernthal) death and subsequent funeral.
This latest season holds fresh at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes with the critics consensus reading, “Having set an exceedingly high standard of excellence for itself, ‘The Bear’ spends its third season simmering, stewing, and giving off an aroma that whets the appetite.” Read our full review round-up below.

To pea or not to pea.
That is the question plaguing Jeremy Allen White’s Carmy through much of the third season of FX and Hulu’s The Bear. Peas — shelled in volume and pristinely positioned for aesthetic and culinary purpose — are a metonym for Carmy’s ongoing quest for perfection, but they represent much more than that this season. Peas represent trauma. Peas, in a fine bit of running wordplay, represent peace. As much as anything, they represent deflection, a target for ongoing indecision, with Carmy addressing his personal doubts to a verdant orb in lieu of Yorick’s skull.
It’s possible that Carmy has always been Hamlet, the prodigal son returned from studies abroad to a death-rocked kingdom he doesn’t recognize anymore, a fatherless figure in search of mentorship and yet failing as a mentor himself.

When the TV series based on the popular video game franchise Twisted Metal made its premiere on the Peacock streaming service back in July, it quickly became one of Peacock’s top five original series, racking up 400 million viewing minutes in its first weekend and earning the honor of being the streamer’s “most-binged” premiere. Now season 2 is speeding ahead, and Variety reports that Anthony Carrigan of the HBO series Barry has signed on to play the video game character Calypso! As the casting announcement describes him, Calypso is “the mysterious, charismatic host and creator of a dangerous demolition derby tournament, who invites all assassins, vigilantes, mercenaries and joyriders to participate. To the winner, he offers the prize of making their greatest wish come true, but with Calypso there’s always a twist.“

Mainly because the other gang is played by a who’s who (then and now) of British comedy: Martin Freeman, Reece Shearsmith, Tamsin Greig, Spaced mainstay Julia Deakin, Matt Lucas and, at the vanguard, Pegg’s Spaced co-creator, Jessica Hynes. A finer cavalcade of cameos, you’ll never see.

Exclusive: Claudia Rosencrantz, the British television executive who first greenlit the Got Talent and Idol franchises for ITV, has left production outfit Studio 1.
Rosencrantz co-founded Studio 1 in 2018 with Adrian Woolfe after they previously worked together to turn Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? into a global phenomenon.
Woolfe said Rosencrantz was “pursuing other opportunities” but would continue to collaborate on Studio 1 shows if they are taken to series.
Studio 1’s development slate has included Kevin Bacon-fronted quiz show Lucky 13 and The Imposter, a game show fronted by British presenter Rob Rinder.
Studio 1 was also behind Lit, a CNN-style entertainment news network that streamed across YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Roald Dahl's novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was first published in 1963, and has been a perennial classroom favorite ever since. The story tells the tale of an impoverished, Dickensian moppet named Charlie who wins a sweepstakes held by the chocolate factory in his town. The chocolate factory, overseen by an eccentric recluse named Willy Wonka, produced sweets with eerie, magical powers; multi-flavored chewing gum caused its chewer to expand into a massive blueberry. That sort of thing. Of all the children who won Willy Wonka's sweepstakes, only Charlie survived the tour. Well, the other kids survived, but definitely the worse for wear.

Mickey Mouse has got a knife. With those simple words, and the corresponding horror movie trailer which goes with them, it’s become clear that the 21st century is about to get weird. Well, weirder, at any rate.
Nearly a hundred years after Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks animated the short film “Steamboat Willie,” which introduced a rodent who helped Walt build an empire, the same short cartoon has entered the public domain as of Jan. 1, 2024. And already there have been as many new Mickey Mouse slasher projects announced as there’ve been days in the New Year.
The first and clearly most advanced is Mickey’s Mouse Trap, a film set in a fictional amusement park where teenagers are picked off one at a time by a man with uncomfortably familiar-looking mouse ears. The logline promises (or warns?): “It’s Alex’s 21st Birthday, but she’s stuck...

As a piece of history, the Watergate scandal is a daunting narrative smorgasbord.
There were too many characters in this madcap dramedy and they almost all beggar belief — one outlandish caricature after another — except that they’re all real. It’s a problem that Hollywood has solved by telling the Watergate story over and over again, with the spotlight on a different principal within the burgeoning fiasco each time. Maybe there are commonalities between Watergate recountings — the security guard removing the tape from an illicitly opened door has become the Murder of Bruce Wayne’s Parents of 20th century American history — but with an ever-changing prism, it should be possible to never come away with a repeated perspective.
Maybe you have All the President’s Men on one, very serious, end of the spectrum and Dick on another, very silly, end of the spectrum and every other variation looking for tonal traction in between.

This article contains spoilers for "Yellowjackets" season 2. Of every character in season 2 of "Yellowjackets," the bubbly, eccentric Crystal (Nuha Jes Izman) is perhaps the strangest. She pops up in the middle of the season 2 premiere and unexpectedly develops a connection with Misty (Samantha Hanratty), and it's immediately clear the two are destined to be BFFs.
When Crystal confides in Misty how she "ate" her twin sister in the womb, Misty's riveted, and she's never seemed happier than when Crystal encouraged her to try acting. The two are perfect for one another, which only further raises the question: where's Crystal been this whole time? Why are they only now hitting it off, when they've been stuck in the same cabin together for months? Both the character of Crystal and the actress playing her are completely new, but she's hardly alone. A handful of other background characters have technically been there the whole time,...

Gary Oldman is one of the greatest film actors of all time. His versatility is so established now that there are internet memes about his uncanny ability to just simply vanish into a role. No other actor could convincingly play real-life figures as diverse as Lee Harvey Oswald and Winston Churchill, let alone such contrasting literary characters as Dracula and George Smiley. It's this versatility that has led to his success and longevity as an actor; he can play the hero, the villain, a supporting role, or a mere cameo, and never gives a part anything less than his all, whether he's playing Beethoven or a CGI peacock.
It's true that he displayed a propensity for playing villains in outlandish science fiction romps like "The Fifth Element," popcorn actioners like "Air Force One," or serial killer thrillers like "Hannibal." However, more recently he has received long overdue recognition for his...

“The Lion King,” a Disney Media Franchise, commemorated its 26th anniversary this past June. It is a genuine archetypal that can captivate audiences of all ages. The first Lion King film in the series was produced in 1994.
According to Environment Weekly, there were more than 600 animators involved in the production of “The Lion King” including animators, technicians, and other crucial figures. In fact, every moment was arduously explored, reorganized, and refined again which cost a lot of money, time, and a lot of headaches. And here’s the result – the great movie “The Lion King.”
The key to its success comes from its skilfully constructed characters who frequently walk and act like their real-life equivalents. The real-life lions were brought to the studio for the animators to study.

Both Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad have well-deserved reputations for their narrative patience. Major events tend not to happen until the creative team has slowly but surely laid all the groundwork necessary for these events to make sense and have the maximum possible emotional impact.

The follow-up to Classic Monsters Unleashed, Shakespeare Unleashed is a horror anthology that features new, original stories from Joe R. Now on Kickstarter, I caught up with editor James Aquilone to talk about the origins of this unique horror project, working with this talented group of creators, and future plans!
Following the success and release of Classic Monsters Unleashed, what inspired you to reimagine Shakespeare’s works as short horror stories (and sonnets) in Shakespeare Unleashed?

So I started thinking what an Unleashed series would be and what other literary or fictional universes we could delve into.
