Johnny Depp may already be on location in Boston shooting Whitey Bulger crime drama Black Mass for Out of the Furnace helmer Scott Cooper, but that doesn’t mean that the highly anticipated film is done with casting quite yet.
In an unexpected shake-up, Guy Pearce, who was on board to play Whitey’s politician brother Billy Bulger, has departed the project, leaving Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch to take his place. Just hours after that scoop broke, it was also announced that Parks & Recreation actor Adam Scott would be joining the film, playing FBI Agent Robert Fitzpatrick.

There probably hadn’t been such a titan of organized crime since the heyday of 1930s prohibition and the days of Al Capone. In Boston though, the name James J. Bulger was hardly one with a lot of sentimental nostalgia attached, but rather it conjured images of fear and violence in South Boston, conditions that police and law enforcement at all levels of government seemed powerless to stop. Of course, we know how the story ends, and Bulger, Aka: Whitey, was arrested after nearly 20 years on the lam, tried, convicted and sentenced on multiple counts of murder, conspiracy, extortion and drug trafficking. But how did everyone let Whitey get away with so much for so long?
Acclaimed filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost) directs Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger and does so by covering a lot of ground in the origins, career, and downfall of Boston’s most notorious gangster.

Why Watch? If its provocative title isn’t enough, this short documentary focusing on failed Doomsday Prophet Robert Fitzpatrick pours on the intrigue by giving him a wide berth to share his thoughts. The result is an after-the-fact historical artifact about someone utterly convinced of something…who has been proven profoundly wrong. Coming off of Mayan fever in 2012, director Garret Harkawik is keen on finding the human inside the cartoon. It would have been easy to bully this severely misguided man, but it’s a much greater feat to provide a sense of welling empathy for a figure who publicly humiliates himself while believing he’s doing a grand public good. Watching the crowd grow hostile after the end fails to come is about as uneasy as it gets. When Chris shared this film (complete with his pitch for having John Turturro play Fitzpatrick in a feature-length film), it proved to be an example of deft execution...
