“The Deb” has finally made its debut. Sort of.
The coming-of-age musical, which has been caught in the middle of a bare-knuckled brawl between director Rebel Wilson and a trio of producers, screened for a select group of industry figures at WME’s offices in Beverly Hills on Monday afternoon.
Wilson was in attendance for the screening, which was described as an “intimate private” event in an invitation. Before the screening, the “Pitch Perfect” star made a quick speech thanking everyone for showing up and urged guests “to laugh and cry and feel anything they wanted.” After the credits rolled, Wilson reemerged and teared up, apparently moved by the crowd’s enthusiastic response, according to an attendee. Among the guests were fellow Aussie directors Phillip Noyce and Sophia Banks as well as reps from Netflix and Universal. The two studios have longstanding deep ties with Wilson via “Isn’t It Romantic...

Paul Walter Hauser will lead the cast of Press Your Luck, a pic based on a true story of an unemployed ice-cream truck driver who won big on a 1980s game show.
Set in 1984, the film follows Ohio resident Michael Larson, who steps on to the set of game show ‘Press Your Luck’ harboring a secret: the key to endless amounts of money. “Black Site” director Sophia Banks is hoping her new 10 million action thriller “Black Site” is the little movie that could.
“We’re not trying to be an 80 million action movie but we want to make this genre accessible for people,” Banks tells me. “It Ok to shoot an indie action movie. As long as you take people on a good ride, then that’s all we want. We just want people to have fun and go on a journey.”
In “Black Site,” Michelle Monaghan stars as Abby Trent, a CIA agent based at a top-secret black site who must hunt one of their most notorious detainees (Jason Clarke) after he escapes from his cell and goes on a killing spree.
I recently caught up with Banks and Monaghan over Zoom.
How did it all come about?
Banks: I did a couple of shorts. One premiered at Tribeca called “Proxy” that got sold to Anonymous Content.

"You gonna tell us what really happened?" Redbox has revealed an official trailer for Black Site, an action thriller from filmmaker Sophia Banks making her feature directorial debut with this. In addition to one other film that's also called Black Site (a horror), there's so many other forgettable films recently that are also set at "CIA black sites" - for example One Shot or Invincible or Agent Game just in the past year alone. In fact, the plot of this one sounds a lot like the plot of Agent Game, which is probably why it's being dumped to VOD. A group of officers based in a labyrinthine top-secret must fight for their lives against Hatchet, a brilliant and infamous high-value detainee. When he escapes, his mysterious and deadly agenda has far-reaching and dire consequences. Michelle Monaghan stars with Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney, Uli Latukefu, Lucy Barrett, and Phoenix Raei. Anonymous Content has announced a new sci-fi series based on Sophia Banks’ short film Proxy, starring Emma Booth (The Gloaming).
Set in the near future, at a time when electronic mass surveillance and a social credit system have entirely crippled personal freedom across the world, Proxy explores how psychological ‘surrogates’, titled Proxies, have now become the only reasonable option for anyone who can’t risk losing their wealth and liberty for undesirable behavior.
The serialised drama was created and will be written by Halil Ozsan (What Would Diplo Do?) and Dominick Joseph Luna, who wrote the short film that Banks directed during 2020.
Booth also starred in the original short, which played at more than 20 festivals, including Los Angeles Short Films Festival, London Sci-Fi Film Festival, and the Detroit Shetown Film Festival, where it won Best in Fest.
