Not so long ago, our good friends at Polygon published a very detailed research-based piece about how anime is growing around the world and how the current kids, the Gen Z ones, actually love anime more than any other generation, thus confirming that anime is – indeed – one of the largest and fastest-growing fields in the world of entertainment, as witnessed by its growing popularity in the West.
More and more anime movies are being released in Western cinemas as well (which was not the case just 5-10 years ago), major streaming services are not just picking up anime series, but they are also producing their own anime series, and there is a growing trend of live-action adaptations of anime works. On top of that, anime culture is more present in the West.
And while Millennials are those who actually helped make anime popular globally – Dragon Ball was shown in the...

The hard-right news channel now has its own subscription streaming platform, with prices starting at $4.99 per month.
The removal of Newsmax from Directv earlier this year drew sharp protests from ultra-conservative viewers of the channel, who were quick to cry censorship at its withdrawal. Directv insisted there was no political motivation behind the removal, and eventually a new carriage deal brought the channel back to airwaves for Directv customers.
Carriage disputes are only becoming more common as cable and satellite lose customers, however. To help allay audience anxiety that the channel may be pulled from other providers in the future, Newsmax has launched its own direct-to-consumer (Dtc) service, imaginatively named Newsmax+, which is available now.

Newsmax’s right-wing panel show “The Right Squad” was reduced to an incomprehensible screaming match Friday during a debate over the killing of Jordan Neely.
Neely, a homeless street artist, was choked to death by U.S. Marine veteran Daniel Penny on a New York subway earlier this month after the former began shouting he was hungry, thirsty and had little to live for. Neely had allegedly been acting erratically prior to Penny’s chokehold, but had not attacked anyone, a witness who recorded the incident told CNN. Neely’s death was ruled a homicide, and Penny has been charged with second-degree manslaughter for the fatal choke.
Newsmax host Jenn Pellegrino asked the panel if these charges marked “the beginning of the end of the Good Samaritan,” which sparked a lively shouting duel amongst the pundits.

IndieWire turns 25 this year. To mark the occasion, we’re running a series of essays about the future of everything we cover.
It was May 1993 when the “Super Mario Bros.” movie was first released to a nation of very confused gamers, and it’s safe to say that Hollywood and video games have experienced a somewhat tumultuous relationship ever since. Forget oil and water, we’re talking Sonic and Robotnik, Avalanche and Shinra, “Cyberpunk 2077” and anyone who paid $60 to play it. Logic suggests there’s money to be made from crossing the streams, but almost 30 years of ostensible slam-dunks have yielded little success in either direction. Without adjusting for inflation, Duncan Jones’ “Warcraft” remains the highest-grossing movie ever adapted from a video game, but even the studio recognized that the backlash failed to justify the cost of a sequel.
Yet for all of the friction between their respective industries, Hollywood...

While Super Mario 3D World‘s original 2013 launch on the Nintendo Wii U could certainly be considered a success, it’s also clear that this underappreciated Mario platformer was held back at least somewhat by the platform itself. The Wii U, a confusing follow up to the much more successful Wii, sold well below projections, forcing Nintendo to ditch the platform (and its library of games) much sooner than it had planned.
Fortunately, the Switch, which has sold over 60 million more units than its predecessor, has allowed the company to find many of the Wii U’s best games a new home. Just look at Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a multiplayer game we recently rated as Nintendo’s very best.
Next up on the list of Wii U-to-Switch ports is the aforementioned Super Mario 3D World, which comes bundled with a new campaign called Bowser’s Fury, a mode that pits...

A few days ago, the Disneyland version of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge officially opened to the public, and fans have been losing their mind over the theme park’s new area ever since. For many, the handful of attractions, restaurants, and rides is the culmination of over 40 years of fandom, and now, longtime franchise enthusiasts can live out their Jedi dreams in a real-world location that’s devoted to all things Star Wars.
Aside from Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run – a simulator ride that sees guests pilot the eponymous ship – and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance – a dark attraction where parkgoers are caught in a battle between the First Order and the Resistance – there are plenty of other restaurants and shops to explore. Savi’s Workshop allows patrons to build a pricy ($200+) custom lightsaber – which Polygon’s Chris Plante describes as a blending of “a drug deal with a...

2017-03-31T07:18:21-07:00'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Trailer Spoilers Cause Controversy
Sony Pictures has managed to infuriate hard-core Spider-Man fans with the release of its second trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Although the reboot won’t hit the big screen for another three months, the trailer’s three minutes detail some (if not all) of the movie’s main tension points—giving away much about Iron Man’s relationship with Spider-Man, the possible fate of a certain villain, and several other plot details.
Watch at your own risk:
The film marks the third big-screen version of the Marvel Spider-Man franchise, and stars Tim Holland as Spider-Man, with director Jon Watts at its helm.
In his review of the trailer, the Verge’s Chris Plante recommended “sitting this one out, especially if you’re spoiler-intolerant.” And fans have taken to social media to complain that the trailer reveals...

The best movie culture writing from around the internet-o-sphere. There will be a quiz later. Just leave a tab open for us, will ya? “Robert Duvall at SXSW 2014: ‘We’d moon each other on the set of The Godfather“‘ — Henry Barnes at The Guardian has a brief conversation with Duvall, and it’s a conversation with Robert Duvall so go read it. “Dirty Harry: Counter-Counterculture Hero” — Phil Noble Jr. at Badass Digest has a deeper read on a character we think of as a shoot-first-ask-questions-never kind of guy. “Street Fighter: The Movie — What Went Wrong” — Chris Plante at Polygon has a stellar, stellar profile on a schlock bomb that was also a hotshot writer’s one chance at directorial success. “Cheering in the Oscars pressroom” — Mark Caro at The Chicago Tribune thinks that Awards Season reporters as a unit are operating below the integrity of sports journalists. But is “How does losing feel?” really...

After it was revealed that tomorrow's announcement on gun control will feature children standing beside the president, Fox News' America Live panel debated whether those kids are being used "as props" to help the White House advance its desired policies. Conservative radio host Chris Plante lamented that this sort of move "has become de rigueur in American politics; but it's clinical, it is shameless, it is the use of children as props to advance an agenda that existed long before the Sandy Hook tragedy."...

On Friday’s America Live with Megyn Kelly, conservative radio host Chris Plante and former Democratic aide to Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-ny) Christopher Hahn engaged in a heated debate over the allegation that the Obama campaign is attempting to intimidate large-dollar Mitt Romney donors.
