The Boys is one of the most popular superhero series in the world at this moment. The twisted take on the superhero genre, adapted from the comic book of the same name, became a major hit for Amazon Prime and a series that has pushed the boundaries of what can be shown on TV in more ways than one. The series is expecting the premiere of its fourth season in June, while its first and so far only spin-off, Gen V, is in the process of filming its second season. But, there is another spin-off project planned – The Boys: Mexico (tentative title) – but based on the most recent reports, the project is still some time away before being made into a series.
Seeing how popular the franchise is, we’re not really surprised that more spin-offs are being worked on and the only bad news here is that the Latin American spin-off,...

We're now just three weeks away from the season 4 premiere of The Boys, and Prime Video has shared a new still spotlighting the reshuffled members of the "superhero" team known as The Seven.
The updated roster (it's a running joke that there's never actually seven of them) consists of original members Homelander, The Deep, A-Train, and Black Noir (with a different character under the mask), along with two new recruits.
As you might expect, these ladies turn out to be every bit as unhinged/amoral as pretty much every other Supe that's been part of the team, but one, in particular, might be the most dangerous of all: The smartest person in the world, Sister Sage (Susan Heyward).
"It's such a funny power," showrunner Eric Kripke says of the scheming Supe in a recent interview with EW. "A lot of superhero worlds have that character. Whereas most of them are usually really reedy white dudes,...

It was announced last year that a new spin-off of The Boys was in development from Blue Beetle writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, with Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal set to executive produce. Dubbed The Boys: Mexico, the series is set to join the ever-growing superhero franchise, but before you start getting too excited, we’re still a long way off from seeing it on our screens.
The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke spoke with Entertainment Weekly to give an update on the spin-off series. “They are still making the deal with the writer for the pilot,” Kripke said. “He has an amazing pitch, and we all giggle and think about how fun it would be. But there are a lot of hurdles for that show before it’s a real show. He’s got to write an amazing pilot, he’s probably got to write an amazing episode 2. I think he can and he will,...

Exclusive: A longtime passion project imagined by the late Steve McQueen has been revived.
Two decades after the iconic actor’s son Chad McQueen and family friend/Warner Bros exec Lance Sloan began development on the film Yucatan, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer has been set as the screenwriter of the project that is now in early development at Netflix, we understand. Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey remain attached as producers under their Team Downey banner.
Both Netflix and Team Downey declined to comment.
McQueen’s vision involved a story about a renegade salvage expert’s search for Mayan treasure in the Yucatan Peninsula with him taking the lead. Details regarding where Dunnet-Alcocer will take the story are under wraps. Mexican writer Dunnet-Alcocer is working fresh with McQueen’s script, which was discovered years after his 1980 death as part of a collection of notebooks he left behind in a pair of trunks.

'El Muerto' is reportedly back in development without Bad Bunny.Sony is said to have quietly resumed work on the upcoming comic book blockbuster - which follows the story of a superman luchador - but the musician and occasional WWE superstar won't be playing the masked wrestling hero.As reported by Variety, script revisions and Bad Bunny's tour dates mean the movie is in development without its former leading man. There had been delays due to the writers and actors strikes in Hollywood, which meant the film lost its place in the release calendar.Last year, Bunny - whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio - was asked about the status of the film, and described the situation as "delicate" to Vanity Fair.He added: "I don't know what to say."A publicist later told the outlet he was no longer on board with the project.

The year began, as they usually do, with so much promise. This was, after all, supposed to be the year that DC came roaring back, with Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the long-awaited The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Marvel had its own big slate. We were to be in a Shangri-La of screen superheroes. Yet in the end, it appeared the comic book movies failed audiences.
Or did they? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, based on comics from the 1980s, is one of the top animated movies of the year. David Fincher’s stylish The Killer is based on a French graphic novel. And of course, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, is a towering achievement even beyond the medium of animation.
In other corners, movies based on toys, for the most part, are looked down upon and are considered jokes. But here, too, 2023 surprised us.

Gael García Bernal is nursing a slight cold. He thinks he may have caught a bug during a flight to Los Angeles. But he theorizes it could have also come from the Academy Museum Gala, held in the museum’s open-air atrium, which he attended two nights before I meet him for breakfast at Chateau Marmont.
“Everyone was so cold there,” Bernal says, before cracking, “I don’t know if there have been any cases of pneumonia afterwards. I had fun listening to all the speeches but it was difficult to enjoy because we were all super freezing and trying to stay warm.”
I sit down with Bernal early Tuesday morning while he enjoys a cup of coffee and a plate of huevos rancheros because he is finally — post-actors strike — able to talk about “Cassandro,” his Amazon Prime Video film about lucha libre’s most celebrated exótico. Bernal stars as the titular wrestler,...

Amazon – via its Prime Video service — just can't get enough of the superhero satire, bloody carnage and sexually inappropriate behaviour of The Boys. Not content with the original main series, college-set live-action spin-off Gen V (which was recently renewed for a second season) and animated series Diabolical, the company is now in the early stages of developing a Mexican version of the show, with :a[Blue Beetle]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/blue-beetle/' }'s Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer attached to write the initial script.
Few details have been revealed about the new show adapted from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic books, save that it'll be set in Mexico City.

"The Boys" universe is continuing to expand — and now the franchise is headed to Mexico. That's right! Amazon MGM Studios is now developing another show in the ever-growing universe based on the comic books by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson titled "The Boys: Mexico." While it's still in the very early stages, the show has assembled a pretty impressive team behind the scenes to get the ball rolling.
According to Deadline, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is set to write and executive produce the new Mexican-set spin-off. What's more, Gabriel Luna ("Andor") and Gael García Bernal ("Werewolf by Night") are also on board as executive producers and might also appear on screen, though they wouldn't be taking on major roles. Plot details for the series currently remain under wraps but the report states that the series is expected to eventually film in Mexico, rather than in the U.S. or Canada, for example.

With season four on the way and college-set spinoff “Gen V” recently wrapped, the ultra-violent world of “The Boys“ is about to become even bigger yet. Deadline reports today that new spinoff series “The Boys: Mexico” is in the works.

Dear Hollywood,
As the Thanksgiving holiday dawns, I urge you to include Latino films and performances on your winter watch list and give Hollywood Latinos and their projects a fair chance to be seen.
While Latinos are a growing and essential part of the cultural and social fabric of America, based on the dismal numbers from the recent USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative Report on major Hollywood films released between 2007-2022, it’s clear that Hollywood — America’s narrative-creating and image-defining institution — is broadly failing to acknowledge or include the Latino community.
The Annenberg report notes slow progress over the years. In 2007, no Hispanic/Latino actor held a lead or co-lead role in major Hollywood films. In 2021 and 2022, there were marginal gains, with 10 films where Hispanic/Latino actors held lead or co-lead roles, out of a total of 109 and 118 leading roles, respectively. Among directors and producers of major Hollywood films, less than 5% were Hispanic or Latino,...

The DC superhero film, starring Xolo Maridueña as the insectile superhero, will start streaming on Max on Friday, November 17, as the platform announced in an X post. In the film, which hit theaters in August, Maridueña plays Jaime Reyes, a recent college grad who “returns home full of aspirations for his future… only to find that home is not quite as he left it,” as DC Studios explains. Jaime finds his calling, though, when the Scarab, an ancient relic of alien biotechnology, chooses him to be its symbiotic host, giving the young man an “incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers.” Written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala) and directed by Ángel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings), Blue Beetle also features Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez. Critics gave the Blue Beetle warm reviews,...

Say goodbye to Luca Guadagnino’s “Scarface” movie.
The “Challengers” and “Call Me by Your Name” director confirmed to The Hindu that he is no longer attached to helm a reinterpretation of the iconic mobster movie. Guadagnino was first attached to “Scarface” in 2020, with Ethan and Joel Coen writing the script.
“I’m not working on ‘Scarface’ anymore,” Guadagnino told the outlet in November 2023.
He later added of adaptations in general, “For me, when approaching any book adaptation or remake, it’s about understanding what the story carries within itself that goes beyond the form of the original work. So that you can tell that story from a completely different perspective. Whether it’s fresh or not, I cannot tell. But it’s different.”

Ángel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer's "Blue Beetle" (check out our review here) may not have been a box office success, but the latest venture from DC Studios and one of the last films of the DC Cinematic Universe before James Gunn and Peter Safran revamp the studio is thankfully one of the most fun. Not to mention, it's also one of the rare instances where a superhero movie embraces cultural specificity, instead of just perpetuating the same ol' white stories over and over again. If you've yet to see the film, here's what to expect.

Mexico’s Monterrey Film Festival (ficmonterrey) is chasing new ambitions in a bid to raise its international profile. Spoilers for Blue Beetle. Consider yourself warned. While Blue Beetle may be more light-hearted than other superhero stories, that doesn’t mean that there can’t be some life-or-death stakes.
Related Box Office Predictions: Gran Turismo looking at soft opening
The death of a family member or close friend in order to motivate a superhero has been done again and again, but… it does work. While speaking with Collider, Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto said that the original plan was for “nobody” to die, but DC Studios pushed for an “emotional death.” Unfortunately, that meant that Reyes family patriarch Alberto (Damián Alcázar) had to die, but Soto and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer wanted his death to mean something more.
“‘How can we create the lowest of lows with the family member?” Soto said. “And how that low is not just another death in the superhero genre, but how that low...

This post contains spoilers for Blue Beetle.
Even ten years ago, few would have guessed that the Blue Beetle would be in a movie, let alone the star of one. Both the current Blue Beetle Jamie Reyes and his predecessor Ted Kord have been fan favorites since the 80s, when the latter became a member of Justice League International. But Blue Beetle is hardly the only DC Comics deep cut in the film.
Throughout the movie, the villainous Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon) touts her company’s newest invention, a battle suit termed Omac, which stands for One Man Army Corps. Created by Jack Kirby during his time at DC Comics in the 1970s, Omac is one of the legendary artist’s strangest characters, someone who has been radically reimagined several times since his first appearance.
Omac made his debut in 1974’s Omac #1, written and penciled by Kirby, with letters and inks by Mike Royer.

Spoilers for Blue Beetle. Consider yourself warned. Although Blue Beetle may not be performing at the box office the way Warner Bros. was hoping it would, the movie has received warmer reviews than the last few DC movies. The film also has a connection to the new DC Universe as James Gunn has said that Blue Beetle is the first Dcu character. We are 15 years into superheroes dominating Hollywood, and after so many years, these movies have started to stagnate creatively. In many ways, superhero movies are now like action shonen anime: They all follow very strict formulas and can feel rather same-y, but it is the small ways in which each title is different from the others that makes them entertaining. Just like "Jujutsu Kaisen" is basically just a modern and more horror-inspired "Naruto," the latest DC movie, "Blue Beetle," stands out because of how it adds a focus on family and cultural specificity to the superhero formula.
That's the film's biggest strength from the get-go. Jaime Reyes' (Xolo Maridueña) family is fully aware of his superpowers and of the alien scarab that attached itself to his spine. They are an essential part of the story, the secret weapon that makes Jaime stronger and more powerful, rather than being a source...

The DC superhero film “Blue Beetle” led weekend ticket sales with a modest $25.4 million opening, according to studio estimates Sunday, dethroning “Barbie” from the top spot after a record-setting run that left movie theatres coloured pink for a month.
The “Barbie” phenomenon is far from over. Greta Gerwig’s film, which earlier this week became the highest grossing Warner Bros. release ever domestically, nearly managed to stay No. 1 again with $21.5 million in its fifth weekend. It’s up to $567.3 million in North America and an eye-popping $1.28 billion globally.
The other half of “Barbenheimer” also continues to perform remarkably well for a movie so far into its run.
Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” took in $10.6 million in its fifth week. With a $285.2 million domestic total, “Oppenheimer” now owns the distinction of being the biggest box-office hit never to land No. 1 at the weekend box office. The previous record-holder for that unlikely stat...

Blue Beetle flew into theaters on Friday as the first Latino DC superhero. But the day that should have been a celebration was instead bittersweet for Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the credited writer of the Warner Bros. release.
Rather than taking in the milestone moment, Dunnet-Alcocer struggled with bittersweet feelings as he found himself on the picket line, waving his sign, outside the very studio that made his movie. At one point he found himself under a massive billboard emblazoned with the faces and logo of Beetle.
“I’m proud and I’m sad. I’m excited and I am afraid,” he told The Hollywood Reporter of the tumult that was brewing inside him.

In Ángel Manuel Soto’s Blue Beetle, a teenager finds a magical contraption that he isn’t supposed to touch, stolen from an evil corporation trying to unlock its secrets, but once he does, he finds himself overtaken by a super-powered suit, which the corporation wants back at all costs. If that premise sounds at all unique, mysterious, and refreshing, welcome to planet Earth. But for anyone who’s seen even a single superhero movie released in the past 20 years, you’d be right to worry about that premise sounding like a harbinger of the dullness to come.

There is a scene relatively early in the new "Blue Beetle" movie where its lead character, Jaime Reyes (played by Xolo Maridueña), is seen with his sister, Milagros (played by Belissa Escobedo), sitting on the rooftop of their family's house. The two are reflecting on all the trials and tribulations they and their family have been through, some of which the audience is privy to. The conversation eventually leads to them fretting about the encroachment of the movie's fictional Kord Industries and how it's been nefariously buying up land across their fictional home of Palmera City, leaving lower-middle-class families like theirs with fewer opportunities to grow. Frustrated, Milagros says to Jaime, "We live on the other side of the tracks, and now they want to take that too." For "Blue Beetle" director Ángel Manuel Soto, who is Puerto Rican, this is a line that he knew would resonate sharply with...

Director Ángel Manuel Soto didn’t think too much about the “Latino side of things” when visually crafting DC’s “Blue Beetle” alongside Mexican screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.
The film — starring “Cobra Kai’s” Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, aka Blue Beetle and DC’s first Latino superhero — oozes with Mexican references and elements of other Latin American cultures through almost every scene. Still, the Puerto Rican director says that all of this came naturally due to his and Dunnet-Alcocer’s backgrounds.

Most people hit snooze when their alarm goes off at 3:30 a.m. Not “Blue Beetle” star Xolo Maridueña, who leaped out of bed each day so he could head to set and begin the hourlong process of donning his superhero suit.
“This is not like getting ready for school in the morning,” Maridueña thought when he first put on the electric blue and gunmetal-hued costume. But it was just as the actors who’ve come before him described their comic book movie experience: With the suit on, his posture straightened, and he was transformed from mere mortal to superhero.
“I could feel the suit hugging me. I could feel the pinchers on my sides,” he adds. “Honestly, it’s pretty comfortable. I hear that they only get better as the years go on — more easily accessible to go to the bathroom.”

Even a little heart goes a long way, and Blue Beetle has more than enough. Based on a DC comic book with origins stretching back to 1939, the film follows Jaime Reyes (the third incarnation of Blue Beetle in the comics), a young Mexican man who returns to his family’s home after college, only to learn his family is losing their house, their auto shop has shut down, and his father is not well. But he’s about to have his life changed even more significantly by the Scarab, a biotechnological alien artifact which can create a powerful exoskeletal armor/flight suit around its user and conjure up energy weapons as well.

The reviews for “Blue Beetle,” DC’s first live action superhero movie centered around a Latino protagonist, are in — and critics are unanimously hailing the performance of star Xolo Maridueña, previously of “Cobra Kai” fame.
“Though it is not officially launching the Dcu, ‘Blue Beetle’ is a worthy introduction to the first new hero of the rebooted cinematic universe,” Tatiana Hullender of Screenrant wrote. “Written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and directed by Angel Manuel Soto, the movie’s task is simply to highlight Jaime Reyes as a protagonist everyone wants to root for — something which star Xolo Maridueña makes very easy. It's been a rough year for DC, but Warner Bros. is looking to turn it around with "Blue Beetle." Starring Xolo Maridueña ("Cobra Kai") as Jamie Reyes, this represents the character's first trip to the big screen in live-action. It also shouldn't be lost on anyone that this movie was originally supposed to go directly to HBO Max (now just called Max) but was given a theatrical release instead. The early buzz has been largely positive, and this could serve as a late summer surprise for moviegoers. For those venturing to theaters to see what DC has to offer, we're here to give you a little help by letting you know what, if any, credits scenes are attached to the film, and how that will impact your viewing experience.
To be crystal clear, this is a spoiler-free guide. Proceed without fear as we're not here to spoil anything at all.

‘Blue Beetle’ Review: DC Superhero Origin Story Succeeds with a Mix of ’80s-Style VFX and Low Stakes
Is comic-book movie culture reaching a tipping point…into peak exhaustion? This summer, we’ve seen signs of that in the ho-hum box-office returns for “The Flash” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” To be fair, the mega-success of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has testified to the genre’s continuing appeal. Still, there are onscreen indicators that the superhero-movie audience, while it remains vast, might be entering the thrill-is-gone zone. As more and more of these films become cogs in a multiverse, their imaginative appeal tends to get trampled by the dictates of corporate world-building. (That “Ant-Man” sequel was designed to set up a saga of villainy longer than the Ring cycle.) Beyond that, it’s hard to escape the sensation that superhero films have become terminally top-heavy with self-importance. The fate of the cosmos seems to ride on almost every one of them.

Remember the first Iron Man movie, or the initial Sam Raimi Spider-Man chapters? Long before the narrative overcrowding of cross-pollination, composite timelines and the damn multiverse brought fatigue to the modern comic-book superhero adventure, those movies had freshness and a buoyant sense of fun. They had warmth and humanity, which have gradually been diluted by quippy smugness and a bludgeoning more-is-more aesthetic. DC’s unexpectedly charming Blue Beetle is something of a throwback to that era, bolstered by humor and heart that stem from the Mexican American title character’s love for his tight-knit family, and no less so from their reciprocal support.

There’s a lot that’s familiar in Blue Beetle, the latest from — and one of the last remnants of — a dying cinematic universe. It’s a superhero origin story movie, so you’ve got a good sense of what you’re getting right from the get-go: someone ordinary getting thrown into something extraordinary, CGI battles, some wisecracks and rib nudges and heartstring thrums (no Snyderverse dude-brooding here), lots of destruction of public property, more CGI battles. There are rich geniuses with bleeding-edge tech and functioning moral compasses, and other...

A creatively orphaned movie about the power of family, Ángel Manuel Soto’s “Blue Beetle” is being released at a strange moment in time, both for superhero movies in general, and for the Dceu in particular (a damaged brand undergoing the kind of rebuild that you typically only find in salary-capped sports leagues).
On the one hand, the first Latino-led superhero outing from a major studio is a long-overdue lifeline to a woefully underrepresented community of loyal moviegoers, and “Blue Beetle” works hard to ensure that its culture isn’t just another dreadfully rendered CGI costume — the film has plenty of those, which makes it that much easier to tell the difference. On the other hand, this ultra-bland origin story is so feckless and familiar that it seldom feels like the first of anything so much as it does a half-hearted invitation to a party that’s already in the process of shutting down.
