Exclusive: While it will continue to have a deal with Skydance Media for tent pole live action film and TV fare, Apple is parting ways with Skydance Animation, the company run by former Pixar chief John Lassiter. Their multi-year deal has come to a conclusion, and Apple is making other kinds of films, notably this weekend’s opener Killers of the Flower Moon, which opens globally Friday.
Skydance Animation will land in a new deal quickly, and Apple will give back to the company the project Spellbound, which had been set at Apple TV+ but will not move forward.
Skydance and Apple will remain partnered on a number of upcoming feature film and TV series, but mutually agreed the animated feature was not the best fit for Apple Original Films’ expanding narrative film slate. It’s Dame Donna Langley now.
The Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman, who is the first British woman to run a Hollywood studio, received her investiture from Prince Charles at Windsor Castle in England on Tuesday.
Langley first received a Dame Commander of the British Empire (Dbe) title from Queen Elizabeth as part of the monarch’s 2020 New Year’s Honors List, but all in-person ceremonies were put on hold due to the pandemic. This week, the well-respected studio executive finally received her Dbe in a ceremony with fellow honorees Tom Daley, the Olympic diver; Sir Chris Whitty, England’s chief medical officer; and Oliver Jeffers, the children’s book author and illustrator.
Langley — who has overseen the Jurassic World, Fast & Furious and Despicable Me franchises for Universal — called the experience “incredible” and said it “exceeded all expectations, just really being in Windsor Castle and walking through the rooms...

The 10th edition of Cartoons Underground is once again online — so we at Asian Movie Pulse took the opportunity to see Southeast Asia’s rising stars. We recently interviewed the Singaporean festival’s student competitors over Zoom. Compared to last year, this year’s selection feels more somber. But perhaps that is because everyone is simply older. Our interviewees are all recent graduates with strong illustration backgrounds this time around. Two of Singapore’s three animation school powerhouses are represented here: Javon Chan Yi Da and Su Xian Yeow hail from Nanyang Technical University; Eiris Lu and Novella Lian stand in for Lasalle College of the Arts.
Their shorts display a range in medium as well. Javon Chan Yi Da’s “A Fish for a Friend” stands out as a Pixar-esque, stylized 3D animated short. Su Xian Yeow’s “Full Circle” leans heavily into print illustration, the film frames awash with blocks of color.

First introduced as a national proclamation by Congress in 1981, Women’s History Month has been celebrated every year since then, using the 31 days of March to promote and amplify the voices of women across the country — and around the world.
To celebrate Women’s History Month, we asked nine actresses to tell us about the books, films and television shows that have inspired them, as women, over the years. Many of their selections were written by female writers, or star strong female leads. The shared goal of these actresses is to not only commemorate the achievements of women this month, but to celebrate their voices — and the stories they continue to tell — all year long.

Earlier in her address, Brown told attendees at the DGA Theater, “You have a story to tell that’s worthy. You have experience to share. You have a valid point of view and you should know this.”

Lost and Found (the book) rocketed to favorite status in my house, and there have rarely been children’s books that have so quickly taken hold in the collective consciousness.
Finally available on DVD, the animated adaptation, winner of numerous awards already, manages to deliver the story of a boy and his penguin in a way that is difficult to believe.
Narrated wonderfully by Jim Broadbent, and with a cheery and somehow cunning musical score, the film pulls at audiences with same ability as the book, which is a feat that is often hoped for, and almost never actualized.
Brilliant in its simplicity, like the book, Lost and Found is a departure from the din of motion and attention grabs that plague all things aimed at children these days. It relies instead on fundamental situations and ideas, and doesn’t need to be overt in what it’s getting at.
