The year 1990 was the beginning of a new decade that just had survived the neon excesses of the ’80s. This fresh start was seen in the world at large with the reunification of Germany, the unification of Yemen, the release of Nelson Mandela and the resignation of Margaret Thatcher as the U.K.’s prime minister.

In addition to the recently announced Deadpool vs. The Punisher, Marvel looks to be on a hot streak when it comes to the five-issue miniseries in 2017. From what we can glean from the bountiful gallery provided, this one looks like a winner. Not only does it have a killer creative team at the helm, but it also doesn’t skimp on any of the grittiness or level of violence one would expect from a tale of this nature. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for covers by Dave Johnson, Bill Sienkiewicz, Chris Stevens, Skottie Young, Marco Checchetto, John Tyler Christopher and Tim Bradstreet.

It’s been an interesting few years for Daredevil villain Bullseye. After seemingly being killed by the Man Without Fear during the Shadowland storyline, he returned in an iron lung intent on ruining Matt Murdock’s life. That culminated with the assassin who never misses left blind and horribly scarred, but he was somehow back to normal by the time Secret Wars rolled around.
Next month, Bullseye will return in a series of his own, but rather than focusing on his rivalry with Daredevil, it’s set to revolve around what he gets up to in his own time. Now, Marvel has unveiled three brand new variant covers for the comic by an amazing line-up of artists including Skottie Young, Chris Stevens, and John Tyler Christopher.

The Bride of Frankenstein is my favorite classic Universal monster movie. I showed it to my kids for the first time last Halloween, and they loved it, too. As a tribute to the classic film, artist Chris Stevens created this beautiful illustration of the Bride. Universal Pictures is currently in the process of developing a remake in which they hope to get Angelina Jolie on board to star in the film. It will be interesting to see what comes of that. As of right now, I’m just basking in the glory of this great art!

Michael Bay propagandizes for a right-wing idea of “true America,” seething with disdain for anyone who isn’t a former elite soldier turned mercenary. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not a Michael Bay fan
I have not read the source material

This purportedly true account of the 2012 “Battle of Benghazi” opens with American military contractors Jack Silva (John Krasinski: The Wind Rises, Monsters University), who has just arrived in town, and his old buddy Tyrone “Rone” Woods (James Badge Dale: The Walk, Parkland) bluffing their way past a roadblock by armed Libyans. It doesn’t matter what side the Libyans are on; in the chaos that erupted after Gaddafi’s death: the point is that they are Libyans — suspiciously lawless violent folk, that is, who cannot even get their own nation under control — and not Americans.

Time once again for the movies to deploy into a true “hot spot” for another “ripped from the headlines”, “inspired by true events” Middle East military thriller (perhaps it was the Best Picture Oscar winner of 2008, The Hurt Locker, that spurred this trend). It seems that for the past several years, around this same time, multiplexes have presented these current conflict action epics. Last January American Sniper, opening wide after a limited pre-holiday release, was a huge box office hit, more so than the previous year’s Lone Survivor. This new film harkens back to 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty in that it dramatizes an event that made headlines (eventually becoming a political “hot button”). And like Zero we know how this ended, but do we really know how it began? And more importantly, do we know about the real life heroes involved? So, is Kathryn Bigelow or Clint Eastwood helming this true tale?...

In 2014, a group of American security contractors who’d worked in Benghazi, Libya, at the time of the September 11, 2012 attack that killed U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans collaborated with writer Mitchell Zuckoff on a book called 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi. Although the contractors (two of whom used pseudonyms) pinned much of the blame for the tragic debacle on the CIA, particularly the chief of a covert compound a mile from the ambassador’s residence, it joined a growing number of books avidly embraced by political foes of the Obama administration and its then Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, soon to gear up for a White House run. That many of the “Benghazi! Benghazi! Benghazi!” whoopers couldn’t find Libya on a map didn’t matter. They had a House with the votes to convene yet another committee to grill Clinton...

Director Michael Bay insists his new action film, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, about the controversial 2012 firefight that left U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three others dead, isn’t meant to be political. But anyone looking at the subject matter and the release date — in the midst of a presidential race, in which the Gop will likely try to hang the events of Benghazi around Hillary Clinton’s neck — might disagree. More important, despite often claiming that his films have nothing to do with his personal views, Bay’s ouevre isn’t exactly apolitical, it’s just all over the place. Here’s an assessment of where his movies fall ideologically. Hover over or tap the movie titles to read more. *This article appears in the January 11, 2016 issue of New York Magazine.

Whether it’s Pearl Harbor, Armageddon or the much-maligned Transformers franchise, Michael Bay isn’t known for striking a balance between character-driven drama and blockbuster action. And though early trailers for the director’s upcoming Benghazi thriller 13 Hours all but confirm that that trend will long continue, at the very least, we can still surely expect a Bay film that is infinitely more compelling than the director’s recent creative ventures.
Perhaps that comes down to the fact that 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is rooted in a real-life controversy. But rather than aligning the feature to be a political drama, Bay and Paramount’s rendition of the infamous 2012 event will tell the tale of the boots on the Libyan ground, as they hunkered down to defend a prized Us compound from waves of oncoming enemies.

While Paramount focused on the high-octane nature of Michael Bay’s high-profile thriller 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi for last week’s explosive trailers, this time around the studio is drawing attention to the harrowing stories of the real-life American who experienced the controversial event first-hand, and how their tales of bravery will be depicted in January’s thriller.
Featuring the voices of Mark ‘Oz’ Geist, Kris ‘Tanto’ Paronto and John ‘Tig’ Tiegen, today’s featurette pairs their accounts of the events that unfolded in Libya circa 2012 with never-before-seen footage from the actioner, along with a peek behind the scenes of Michael Bay’s latest feature film. Putting the politics to one side, as one voice reveals, 13 Hours is really a story about what happened for the boots on the ground, and such an approach has garnered their backing: “We decided that the story that was being told wasn’t what happened that night.
