If you think you know the tale of the Headless Horseman, think again. Because you’ve never seen a Headless Horseman tale quite like the one that Shipwrecked Comedy has created. Headless, premiering today, is the latest series from the production company who, in their words, are “committed to creating dynamic, funny, and intelligent content for the digital spaces and beyond.” Founded in the summer of 2013 by Sean Persaud and his twin sister, Sinead (The Only Podcast Left – Daybreak), the group has produced numerous shows that marry both history and literature in humorous, engaging ways, ranging from a Clue-inspired murder mystery dinner party to a noir film. Its newest offering is a twist on the famous Legend of Sleepy Hollow story that has enthralled and haunted audiences for decades, starring both Persaud siblings as well as Mary Kate Wiles, Joanna Sotomura (Barry), Curt Mega (Glee), Krystina Arielle (Star Wars: ...

Bernie Su and Pemberley Digital’s The Lizzie Bennet Diaries will live on, but this time in another book. The story of hit web series, which garnered over 58 million views on its channel, will continue with an original book called The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet, based on Lizzie’s rambunctious youngest sibling.
The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet will pick up where Lizzie Bennet left off. Now that Lizzie and Jane are out of the house, Lydia (played by Mary Kate Wiles in the web series) must take charge of her own future after being humiliated online by her ex-boyfriend. 1. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. A runaway success that sparked a veritable wave of web adaptations of romantic novels and stories, this Emmy-winning series is inventive, romantic, and beautifully executed. Ashley Clements and Daniel Vincent Gordh (particularly the former) handled their iconic Lizzie/Darcy roles with aplomb, and the series pulled a particular coup by casting Mary Kate Wiles as Lydia and reshaping her story as that of a party girl who gets hurt and slowly grows up over the course of the series. The interactions between sisters Lizzie, Lydia, and Jane (Laura Spencer), are warm and real and the highlight of the series along with the slowly-built-up Darcy/Lizzie romance.
The main flaw in the series is that it’s too long – the first 50 episodes chronicle every event that happens in the book, and while book purists might call this praiseworthy, this is a web-series not a BBC adaptation, and...

At its Digital Content Newfronts presentation, Maker Studios' announcements included the debut of a number of new web series and the launch of an off-YouTube platform called Maker.TV. It has now synthesized these two new developments by launching the first three episodes of one of its highest-profile web series, Next Time On Lonny, on Maker.TV. Next Time On Lonny follows its titular hero as he tries to adjust to his new life in Los Angeles. The first few seconds of each episode are presented as a fake reality show called Lonny: Los Angeles. When a narrator begins to preview the next episode of that reality show by uttering the phrase "next time, on Lonny," all hell breaks loose. A number of guest stars will contribute to the chaos, and the first episode includes an appearance from Lizzie Bennet Diaries star Mary Kate Wiles. Next Time On Lonny...

It is a truth universally acknowledged… that Jane Austen’s novels will never stop being reimagined, readapted, or reworked. But among the countless parodies, books, and films that are based on Pride and Prejudice, only “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” managed to make it a web-based, immersive experience. The web series, a modern adaptation co-created by Bernie Su and Hank Green, premiered in 2012 and ended this year after 100 episodes, finishing off a stellar 2013 by winning a Creative Arts Emmy.

Many girls in the millennial generation once went through a 'goth' phase filled with eye shadow and black clothes. A new series featuring a plethora of YouTube talent mocks this stereotype. It's called The Goreys, and it stars Mary Kate Wiles of Lizzie Bennet Diaries fame. The Goreys, created by Justin Coloma, seems to be aiming for a similar audience to Lizzie Bennet and shares many similarities to Bernie Su's hit series beyond their shared leading lady. It also attempts to combine hip, modern lingo with 19th century literature and features a gaggle of female protagonists (including YouTube beauty personality Meghan Rosette) who serve as self-caricatures while throwing around one-liners. Wiles' Tori Gorey delivers the best line of episode one when she says of a date at Red Lobster, "Nothing says romance like a boiled arthropod." “The Goreys combines my passion for interactive storytelling with gothic aesthetics and good old-fashioned laughs,...

Squaresville's second season is rolling along on Big Frame, where it has helped launch a new sub-network aimed at young women. The series' target audience will surely appreciate the latest episode, where the three leads--Mary Kate Wiles, Kylie Sparks, and Austin Rogers--cosplay as the main characters from shows will big Internet fandoms. Even with no context, the episode is sure to please fans of both Squaresville and the chosen fandoms, which include Sherlock, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Adventure Time, and, in a nod to Squaresville's web series status, The Guild (it helps that Wiles and Felicia Day are pretty much the two most popular online video redheads.) Joining those motifs are references to Annie Hall, Daria, Ghost World (which I've always thought of as thematic similar to Squaresville), and, in the episodes most absurd moment, The Joy of Painting. The episode is a clear grab at fanbases,...

Between the constant backstabbing, betrayal, and ever-shifting alliances, Westeros really is a lot like a big, medieval high school. So it was only a matter of time before somebody decided to give Game of Thrones the Carrie Diaries treatment. (Minus the ’80s, plus some really awful excellent wigs.)
In the first episode of the new web series School of Thrones, new girl Dani Targaryen gets a Mean Girls-style introduction to the cliques of Westeros Valley High School. The Starks are cooler-than-thou hipsters in thick-framed glasses; the Lannisters are wannabe rappers, for some reason; the Baratheons are dumb jocks, except...

Game of Thrones returns on March 31st, but a new series is helping to ease the wait by preemptively bringing viewers to Westeros. Westeros High School, that is. Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Squaresville actress Mary Kate Wiles takes the lead in School of Thrones, a hormone-fueled parody of the popular fantasy series and HBO drama. Like a quirky retelling of Shakespeare, creator Zach Grafton has meticulously modernized every element of the medieval tale and added a few of his own embellishments to keep things interesting. The first episode was released on March 10th to a warm reception, with thousands of subscribers already flocking to the show's YouTube channel. Hardcore Game of Thrones fans may be disappointed by the liberties Grafton has taken with the source material. Instead of being a child-sized whirlwind of pure evil, Joffrey Baratheon is little more than a mere annoyance. His betrothed, Sansa Stark, is transformed...

Forget Oscar-tipped films and lush BBC dramatisations – the Lizzie Bennet Diaries is an addictive bi-weekly retelling of Pride and Prejudice for the web generation
Jane Austen has been providing us with Sunday-evening viewing fodder ever since someone had the ratings-winning idea of putting gowns and tight breeches on primetime TV. But as Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy celebrate their 200th anniversary of appearing in print, the best Austen adaptation around at the moment isn't an Oscar-tipped film or a lush BBC dramatisation – it's a series of 10-minute YouTube videos, with accompanying in-character tweets. And it's modern-day. And American.
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries calls itself an "innovative, original episodic video and social media series produced for the web". Actually, it's an addictive bi-weekly retelling of Pride and Prejudice, in which Darcy is a hipster, Lizzie is a beleaguered grad student and her mother is just as desperate to get her married off as in the original.

The first season of creator Matt Enlow's Squaresville, a low-key teenage comedy, drew a bit of a cult following thanks to a likable cast (featuring Mary Kate Wiles of Lizzie Bennett Diaries among others) and a deal with Big Frame that gave the fledgling web series plenty of publicity. Six weeks after the Squaresville finale aired, Enlow and Wiles have returned to the show's channel to announce a second season of the show. It will debut in early 2013 and, if the show's creative talent is to be believed, it will have "100% more making out, 100% more fun, and 85% more angst." Production has already wrapped, so expect Enlow to spend the next few weeks teasing his passionate fanbase with photos and trailers (the Squaresville channel has hosted a large amount of behind-the-scenes material in addition to the sixteen episodes.)

Squaresville, the teen dramedy from creator Matt Enlow, has been on our radar since it was just a wee little Kickstarter campaign back in 2011. Since then, the series has signed up with Big Frame and has gained a solid following. Now, after 16 episodes, the first season of the show has come to an end. The finale was recently released, revealing a key secret about one of the main characters and ending the season on a bit of a cliffhanger. Squaresville stars Mary Kate Wiles (Lizzie Bennet Diaries) as Zelda, a precocious teen whose best friend is Esther, played by Kylie Sparks. So much about this series, from the setting to the 'feel' to the give-and-take between the two leads, reminds me of Ghost World, the comic book that became a critically acclaimed film. Squaresville's finale definitely contains most of these appealing elements. If you've seen part of the series so far,...

Today the slice-of-life hipster comedy Squaresville launched on YouTube, after a well-attended premiere at the NerdMelt Theater at Meltdown Comics in Hollywood on Tuesday. It's about time. Tubefilter gave you a sneak peek at the Squaresville minisodes back in October 2011—and then we waited. But Matt Enlow, creator-producer behind Squaresville and cult favorite Mountain Man (which earned him three Streamys noms), has been busy, busy, busy. Enlow has teamed up with top online producer network Big Frame to develop an audience around the show. Big Frame has collaborated with web series creators in the past, including Mystery Guitar Man's Once Upon featuring Mark Gantt and Taryn O'Neill—but the Squaresville deal marks the first time that an independent web series has reached out to become a part of the larger network. Even before the deal, Squaresville had been gaining traction on its own, earning over $12,000 with a fundraising campaign for the project on Kickstarter.

Mountain Man producer and online video persona Matt Enlow has just released the first minisode for his highly anticipated new series Squaresville. The slice-of-life comdey focuses on two childhood friends as they pass through teenage adolescence in the suffocating boredom of suburbia. Zelda (Mary Kate Wiles) and Esther (Kylie Sparks) are two misfit friends whose friendship faces the complicated, emotional, and hilarious challenges of teen romance and new social forces. "I started Squaresville because I wanted to make something that would resonate emotionally with the online audience," Enlow told Tubefilter. "In an era of disposable entertainment, and distractions, it's really challenging to make something sincere. The show is a comedy at its core, but the characters are facing universal issues with growing up. Who you are as a kid, and who you want to be. It's fun and entertaining, but I try to pack a left hook into every episode.

Director: Michael Escobedo.
Writer: John Muscanero.
A film about death, loss, and loneliness "Dark Woods," from writer John Muscanero and director Michael Escobedo, is a slowly paced psychological drama that deals with many other themes including death and cancer. Tracy Coogan plays the woman dying and she, as Susan Branch, chooses to live out her remaining days in the isolation of a backwoods community. Husband Henry Branch hopes for her recovery, but the introduction of serial rapist Rand Larch and a victim add more stress to an already depressing story. Sounds fun right?
In fact, "Dark Woods" is an enjoyable watch as the intensity builds slowly over time with mystery and the possibility of infidelity hovering over the scenes. The dark writing of the film allows actress Tracy Coogan to fully develop her character as she slips in and out of consciousness. Her acting as a woman succumbing to cancer seems researched and well rehearsed.

Herbert Brindl from the heart of Hollywood drops me another line on "Dark Woods." The film, which is psychologically themed, involves infidelity and terminal illness and "Dark Woods," is currently moving towards a future release date. Despite the serious subject matter the first trailer and one sheet poster have a distinct gloomy atmosphere that manages to heighten the films tension. As well, first time director Michael Escobedo steps behind the camera in this horror film that focuses primarily on atmosphere and story. Have a look at the first full length trailer inside.

Fango caught up with Zombie Honeymoon actress Tracy Coogan, who gave us an update on the recently wrapped Dark Woods, which she stars in and associate produced. She also passed on some fresh exclusive photos (see ‘em below) from the movie, lensed in 14 days last October in the mountains above Los Angeles and directed by Michael Escobedo from a script by John Muscarnero (the two also produced).
Dark Woods revolves around newlyweds Susan (Coogan) and Henry Branch (Muscarnero), who move to a secluded cabin in order to attend to the former’s failing health. It seems hubbie Henry isn’t the stand-up guy he ought to be, however, and instead of keeping his focus on his terminal spouse, he engages in a sexual tryst with a local teen (Mary Kate Wiles) he has saved from a rape. Badness, of course, ensues. James (The Ninth Gate) Russo, Mark Shady, Corey Mendell Parker...
