In the mid-2000s, one of the main selling points in mainstream horror was the so-called Torture Porn scene. Emphasizing extreme violence, brutality, and relentless torture and suffering from its victims at the expense of traditional suspense and chills, the scene had a massive amount of mainstream appeal thanks to films like “Saw,” “Hostel,” “Wolf Creek,” and “The Collector” among others bringing about massive financial gain and audience acceptance which brought about numerous attempts throughout the world. After the Japanese effort “Grotesque” started the Asian countries jumping on the trend, Taiwanese director Kevin Ko tackled the genre with his debut feature “Invitation Only” which is now available on physical media from Unearthed Films.

People will tell you Tom Waits’ best album is Rain Dogs. This is not strictly true. It is perhaps the most Waits-ian of Tom Waits albums, by virtue of having a Waits lookalike on the cover and a song selection that ranges across virtually every genre of music (and combinations thereof) Waits could wrangle. But the best Tom Waits album is not Rain Dogs. Instead it’s Bone Machine (which netted Waits his first Grammy in 1993), and it turns 25 years old today.
Waits explained Rain Dogs’ titular inspiration to Spin in 1985: “You know, dogs in the rain lose their way back home.

Ever since Rolling Stone Brian Jones stumbled through Morocco in a hash haze, only to come upon the Master Musicians of Jajouka in a small village in 1968, there's been an interconnectedness between Western rock stars and Eastern mysticism. From the Beatles and the Beach Boys holed up in Rishikesh with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to the Beastie Boys making a "Bodhisattva Vow" and raising consciousness about Tibet, there's been a quest for enlightenment amid the flash of rock stardom, a search for ancient roots deep inside of modern music.
But when...

Jue ming pai dui (Invitation Only)
Screenplay by Sung In & Carolyn Lin
Directed by Kevin Ko
Taiwan, 2009
One of the calling cards of the horror genre is its ability to delve deep into societal issues. The horror genre can often go to places that other genres cannot because of the content found within a horror movie. Not all horror movies explore society, but there are plenty that do so in fine fashion. Jue ming pai dui wants to be one of the films that does explore society more deeply. This film wants to be one of those types of movies so bad that it runs rough shod over subtlety in its desire to deliver a profound message connected with present day society.
The rich and the poor, or upper and lower class if you will, being at odds is nothing new to the world. Travel to any country and a...

With just a few days to go for the release, 3G has launched a brand new song titled ‘Bulbulyan’. The buzz around the movie is growing every day and the team has got the timing of the song spot on. Starring Neil Nitin Mukesh & Sonal Chauhan, the movie is produced by Eros International and Next Gen Films.
Bulbulyan is a slow track with a lot of soul in it. Sung in the melodious voice of Adnan Sami, the enticing track is soothing to the ear and manages to leave a mark. Mithoon’s composition and background score blends well with the vocals giving a brilliant feel to the song. Staying true to the theme of the song – ‘the end is near’; the song is the true representation of the dilemma the lead pair is in.
‘Bulbulyan’ also carries forwards the mystery the trailer had generated. Directed by Shantanu Ray and Sheershak Anand,...

The X Factor Top 10 took to the stage tonight in a special Thanksgiving-themed episode of the Fox singing competition.
Who laid an egg? Who stuffed his/her performance with holiday goodness? How many Turkey Day-related puns can we make in this review? Find out below!
Tate Stevens, “I’m Already There" - Consistent, strong, perfectly suitable for who many consider to be the front-runner. Britney calls it "special."
Diamond White, "Because You Loved Me" - Demi is "blown away" and rightfully so. Sung in honor of her mother, this teen really is "fearless and incredible," as dubbed by Simon.
Emblem3, “Secrets" - Blah. This group is all flash and little substance. Simon may have been down with the song choice, but we're with L.A. Where was the emotion?
Arin Ray, "Hero" - He dedicates the inspiring ballad to his brother. In related news, we're very sorry to Arin Ray's brother.

When Tim Heidecker heard the rumor that Bob Dylan was recording a 14-minute song about the Titanic, he just knew he had to beat him to the punch. Why? Who knows, but the result is the nearly 15-minute song above.
Sung in the style of Bob Dylan, Heidecker posted the song and accompanying video about the Titanic on his Tumblr with the promise of "a nice suprise" toward the end of the song. At first it seemed like that was just a ploy to get us to listen to the entire thing, but after getting through it, we can guess that the surprise comes around nine minutes in, when the subject matter of the song takes a hard right turn toward 90s nostalgia.
You can listen to the full song in the video above or buy it here for 99 cents. Or, if you just can't bring yourself to listen to...

Week 2: Eurovision usually prides itself on balls-out club bangers but things have changed in the wake of a world where every household owns a copy of Adele – 21. Esc 2012 features more balladeers than you can air-grab-during-a-key-change at but whether this is a good thing is highly debatable. Do we really want twelve identical piano-led torch songs about broken hearts? Can we survive a whole evening without a single firework display?
Here are five varying levels of balladry making up the highs and lows of what it means to send a slow song to Eurovision:
Rona Nishliu – Suus (Albania)
Now the occasional tendency with ballads is if you have a good voice and get a bit too into the emotion of the song you d0 a spot of wailing similar to demon-possessed cats scratching blackboards (not that i’ve ever heard that thank goodness). Now Albania’s entry by Rona Nishliu...

Invitation Only
Stars: Maria Ozawa, Byrant Chang, Julianne Chu | Written by Sung In, Carolyn Lin | Directed by Kevin Ko
Five young strangers are unexpectedly invited to an extravagant and exclusive party at which they have the times of their lives, mingling with the rich and the beautiful. That is until they find the brutally decapitated body of one of their group and begin to figure out the true theme of the evening. The remaining four become the prey of a vicious and relentless killer for the entertainment of their sadistic hosts. As the night progresses, the only ambition they have left is to get out alive.
Heralded as Taiwan’s first ever slasher movie, Invitation Only has more in common with the so-called “torture porn” antics of Hostel than the classic slasher movie genre. The film takes all the cliches from years of American horror cinema and blends them together...

We’ve been doing Eurovision in Britain for many years now. But with the advent of reality television, what better way to decide who represents the country this year than to put it to a public vote? And that’s what’s happening on BBC One tonight – six acts will perform for our pleasure. Then we vote for the one we like the most. Simples.
Graham ‘I’m doing Eurovision now Wogan’s retired’ Norton is presenting tonight’s show, and last year’s winner Alexander Rybak is performing. So are the latest version of the Sugababes (which now features our last Eurovision entrant, Miss Jade Ewen).
Also here tonight is the mastermind of this year’s Eurovision entry – Pete Waterman, who’s written the song for Britain. Tonight, as a test of their musical mettle, the potential entrants will sing classic Stock, Aiken and Waterman singles. Brilliant! This should be camp as hell tonight,...
