Exclusive: Channel 5 is on the brink of finding a new producer for its next Jane McDonald and Susan Calman shows. This follows owner Paramount Global’s decision to close the Viacom International Studios (Vis) UK unscripted division, revealed by Deadline last month.
Deadline understands that Daisybeck Studios, which makes some of Channel 5’s biggest hits including The Yorkshire Vet and Our Yorkshire Farm, is extremely close to taking on the work with two of the channel’s highest-profile presenters. Based in Leeds, eOne-owned Daisybeck is a trusted Channel 5 supplier that has made hundreds of hours of shows for the channel including many that focus on the outfit’s native Yorkshire.
The move comes as Paramount begins the process of apportioning dozens of hours of Vis’s factual programing to the UK indie sector.

It takes many people to fill Richard Osman’s shoes, and not just because he wears a size 14. Back in April 2021, the TV presenter, producer and novelist announced that he was leaving his co-presenter role on Pointless to focus on his hugely successful Thursday Murder Club book series and other projects. Due to the ‘stars we see in the night sky are actually hundreds of years in the past’ nature of TV broadcast, by that point, Osman was already four months out of the job. His final episode of the regular Pointless (he’ll still appear on the celebrity editions) was filmed in December 2021 and aired in July 2022, with this touching message to Alexander Armstrong.
When Pointless returned for Series 28 in September 2022, it came with a rotating clutch of new guest-hosts sitting behind Osman’s fact-checking desk. First up was Sally Lindsay, and following her were Stephen Mangan, Lauren Laverne,...

ITV boss Carolyn McCall has raised concerns that the British cost of living crisis could start hampering broadcaster revenues at a time when they are emerging from the pandemic, while BBC Director General Tim Davie warned against “complacency” over changing audience habits.
ITV’s main source of income is advertising but this income is “heavily tied to the economy,” according to McCall, who said a “gloomy” period could impact the network’s revenues.
She was speaking at the Deloitte and Enders Media and Telecoms Conference a day after ITV unveiled strong Q1 results and several weeks after it posted record ad revenues for full year 2021.
The UK is currently in the midst of a major cost of living crisis, with energy and gas bills soaring and serious concerns being raised by businesses over the knock-on effect this will have on the economy.

Comedian Mark Watson will perform stand-up for 27 hours to raise money for Comic Relief's Red Nose Day.
The comic's 27-Hour Comedy Marathon will take place at the Pleasance Theatre in London and will be streamed simultaneously on YouTube.
He said: "It's going to be quite a night. And day. And another night. But alongside all of this, the show is about money (for Comic Relief of course. Apparently I don't get paid – I know, unbelievable).
"So I'm asking the public to join my fundraising team by doing their own ridiculous challenge. Who will take on some sort of epic, self-imposed challenge just like me?"
Joining him on stage will be Adam Hills, Josh Widdicombe, Rufus Hound, Sarah Millican and Susan Calman. Watson will begin his marathon at 9pm on Friday, February 27.
Calman is facing her own 27-hour challenge of dressing as a different person every hour - using only what...

Dave has commissioned a new comedy series asking celebrities to needlessly spend vast sums of money.
Echoing 1985 movie Brewster's Millions, Spending Dave's Money will see celebrity pairs tasked with spending £10,000 in only 24 hours.
Comedians David Baddiel, Richard Herring and Susan Calman - as well as former cricketer and presenter Phil Tufnell - have so far been confirmed as contestants on the show, which is scheduled to air in 2014.
The rules of the programme dictate that the double acts must have absolutely nothing to show for their spending spree and they can only gamble away 10%, which they can place on strategic bets they hope to lose.
The globetrotters will face an outrageous forfeit if they fail to spend every last penny of the local currency.
Five hour-long episodes will be filmed around the globe.
Executive producer for the series Harry Lansdown said: "It's a very bold commission that takes Dave into...

Deaths threats to comedian prompt calls for nationalists to raise the tone. Plus, Fringe gets new venue and Trump takes revenge
This week's comedy news
And this week – a comedian influences the future survival of the British state. Standup Susan Calman has been drawn into a row surrounding the conduct of the campaign for Scottish independence, after she was attacked online after joking on Radio 4's News Quiz about the nationalist cause.
"After the show was broadcast," Calman wrote on her blog, "I was accused of betraying my country, of being racist towards my own people and of being a cunt." Fellow comics including Rory Bremner leaped to Calman's defence, as the Scotsman newspaper picked up on and ran with Calman's reference to "name-calling, swearing and death threats". To cap it all, the shadow foreign secretary and Unionist tub-thumper Douglas Alexander hijacked the row to berate the independence camp for lowering the debate's tone.

Comedians are picking fights this week. Here's Jim Carrey versus the National Rifle Association, in the form of a Funny or Die? video that's got danders up in the Us. It sees Carrey team up with the band Eels on a comic country-and-western number, Cold Dead Hand, mocking Charlton Heston and Us gun-lovers. Backed by a band including John Lennon, Gandhi and Abraham Lincoln (all killed by guns), Carrey's alter ego Lonesome Earl accuses gun enthusiasts of having small penises, and sings: "On the ones who sell the guns/ [God would] set the vultures and coyotes/ Only the devil's true devotees/ Could profiteer from pain and fear." Carrey announced...

It’s Pink List time again, and it’s been more exciting than ever because The Independent On Sunday, the British newspaper that compiles the list of the country’s 101 most influential Lgbt people, have, for the first time, invited people to send in nominations. These votes will then be considered by the judging panel, which features the likes of Diva magazine editor Jane Czyzselska, Conservative MP Margot James, Welsh rugby star Gareth Thomas and Tamsin Omond, founder of the environmental campaign group Climate Rush.
Last year, there were 31 of our kind on the list, which is still quite a few steps from equality, but this was nine more than in 2009. So, by our reckoning, there should be at least 40 women on this year’s list.
Because we love a vote and writing lists, we’ve combined the two and we’ve written a list of the ten women that we would vote for.
