Trivia

Matt Lucas said the series was an attempt to do a family friendly series like Worzel Gummidge (1979), one of his childhood favourites. He has also said series such as Pingu (1986) and Mr. Bean (1990) were influences with their use of silent comedy and gibberish. See more »

It may take years...

The abysmal score this series has thus far received has hastened me to at least attempt to speak up in its defense.

I was genuinely surprised by the ratings regarding Pompidou, because from the first episode, I could not stop laughing. It reminded me so much of Mr. Bean that the lack of proper English didn't even enter into it. I found this series to be unique and clever and absolutely hilarious, which isn't an easy feat when the majority of the script is constructed of gibberish. Like with silent films, once you let yourself become immersed in the action, rather than the dialog, you can receive great enjoyment from the physical comedy itself.

Matt Lucas made a valiant effort to bring life to this lovable if not conniving character. I think that it may take a few years for this series to fully sink in and to be appropriately appreciated. The sad thing is that there will only be one season to enjoy... over, and over and over again.
