One of his recent screen appearances was in Zee Theatre’s teleplay ‘Boichek’, inspired by the work of German writer Karl Georg Büchner’s ‘Woyzeck’. Maya Sarao, plays the role of Maya Bishnoi in the show, starring Sushmita Sen in the lead. She is the best friend of Aarya (Sushmita) and Hina Khan (played by Sugandha Garg).
Talking about her role, Maya said: “I loved her no-nonsense attitude, and I could relate to how, despite that, she often found herself in tough situations. I tried not to ‘approach’ this role deliberately because real life doesn’t work that way.”
“We can be strong, but life throws unexpected challenges at us. In Maya’s case, it’s like going off the deep end. So, I aimed to be on the same journey and not have everything figured out beforehand,” she shared.

Guilty Minds(Amazon Prime Video; 10 Episodes)
Created & Directed by Shefali Bhushan; Co-directed by Jayant Digambar Samalkar
It is not as if this series blows your mind off with its legal wisdom. Nor is it only about getting the courtroom sequences right. Both in place, Guilty Minds sets out to score points for being able to hijack our attention for ten episodes. Not all of it is equally engrossing. But the storytelling even when faltering and fumbling to cram in too many social issues(including an utterly unnecessary child-abuse end-game) never ceases to be compelling.
Primarily, Guilty Minds works because it doesn’t try to penetrate too far into the minds of the perpetrators. It is all done on the surface level, but with immense care and concentration, so that an impression of focused narration and uninterrupted tension is created even when the plot meanders into the characters’ personal lives which...

OTTThough the series takes its time to hook the viewer, it makes for an engaging and realistic courtroom drama that doesn’t fall back on cliches.Sowmya RajendranGuilty Minds, created and directed by Shefali Bhushan with Jayant Digambar Samalkar as co-director, is centered on a principled woman lawyer in Delhi, Kashaf Quaze (Shriya Pilgaonkar), intertwining her personal and professional experiences. Given the stereotypical representations of Muslim characters, particularly Muslim women, on screen, Kashaf comes across as a breath of fresh air. She’s neither a terrorist in training nor an oppressed woman looking to be ‘liberated’ from her burqa. Just the ordinariness of her character is startling when it shouldn’t be. The first season of the web series, spread over 10 episodes of around 50 minutes each, tracks Kashaf’s cases that range from a woman actor who makes a #MeToo allegation against a supposedly feminist director to a security officer...

When Vibhavari (Sugandha Garg), an up-and-coming Bollywood music director, finds herself facing a creative block, she sets off for Punjab to meet and record folk singer Bibi Swaroop (Sadhana Singh). She first meets Bibi’s son, Mastana (Siddhant Behl), a charming and personable local singer himself, who insists that Vibs must listen to him sing and record him. In Mastana and his mother Bibi, Vibs finds the inspiration that has been escaping her. It’s not surprising that Vibs and Mastana grow close – close enough to spend the night together, admittedly encouraged by not only their music, but also by a bottle of Gulabo (the country liquor that also featured inVishal Bhardwaj’s Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola). Mastana is mortified; Vibs sees it as something pure and natural, but, in the end, no big deal.

Music is an integral part of Shefali Bhushan’s directorial debut Jugni and interestingly most of the names involved including the protagonists as well as the director have a strong music connection. So, while Shefali and the film’s leading lady Sugandha Garg are both trained in classical music, another lead character played by yesteryear actress Sadhana Singh too is a prolific singer.
An exception to this musical background is the lead actor, Siddhant Behl. The actor reveals that though he is playing the role of a singer in Jugni, he has no formal or informal training in music. However, he took up the challenge in his stride and tried to grasp the essence of basic ragas and taals during his pre-shoot session with Shefali.
When quizzed on whether he felt like an outsider amongst a music-oriented cast, he quips, “Music is anyways something that you feel from the heart...

The best thing about Patang, written-directed-edited by Prashant Bhargava, is its nuanced visualisation of Ahmedabad, specifically the old city, during the period of the kite festival (Uttarayan) when it is at its colourful and festive best. Shanker Raman, who superbly captured the landscape and mood of Ladakh in Shivaji Chandrabhushan’s Frozen, weaves a series of evocative images of the crowded part of the city where lanes emerge onto dilapidated Havelis with intricate doorways and crafted windows framing myriad faces peeping out of them.
Patang, actually, is more about imagery than intricate storytelling; and Bhargava adopts an almost documentary-like approach while capturing the sights and sounds of the city, his editing and Raman’s camera complementing each other smoothly, except for a few portions where this cinema verite approach looks a bit forced.
As a narrative, Patang’s storyline does not have anything complex. It’s rather a simple story of a man,...

Chicago – There are few things more difficult to pull off than elegant visual poetry. The line between pretension and artful provocation is a thin one indeed, and any director that attempts to construct a metaphorical mosaic runs the risk of looking foolish. Yet cinema would sure be a dull medium without artists that aimed for the stars, and that is precisely what Prashant Bhargava does in his debut feature, “Patang” (“The Kite”).
Rating: 4.5/5.0
After garnering favorable festival buzz at Berlin, Tribeca, Chicago and Ebertfest, “Patang” is the latest indie treasure to have a screen reserved at the AMC River East 21. This is the sort of gorgeously photographed picture that practically begs to be seen on the biggest screen possible. It stands as a reminder of what truly absorbs a viewer into a film. Arresting visuals and vivid characterizations will always be more entrancing than distracting 3D effects viewed through dim lenses.

I love the film Patang, which you probably know if you have read my interviews with the director Prashant Bhargava, and actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Seema Biswas. In fact, in my intro to Prashant’s interview I said, “Prashant Bhargava’s Patang is an art film in the highest definition that is filled with exciting scenes, beautiful pictures and quiet moments, where a look or an action literally takes your breathe away.” Now I wish I had saved that line for this review because it really does describe the film perfectly. First, let’s set the scene.

Chicago – The exhilarating spectacle of kite flying holds a universal appeal. It allows mere mortals to experience the sensation of scraping the surface of the heavens. During the Uttarayan festivities in the Indian city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, a billowing canopy of color and movement hovers over the rooftops as citizens come together to participate in the country’s largest kite festival.
This annual event provides the backdrop for Chicago native Prashant Bhargava’s visually arresting, marvelously vibrant debut feature, “Patang” (“The Kite”). Effortlessly blending non-actors with some of India’s most renowned performers, “Patang” tells the story of Jayesh (Mukkund Shukla), a businessman whose trip to reconnect with his estranged family turns out to be both nostalgic and bittersweet. He’s welcomed with open arms by his sister-in-law, Sudha (Seema Biswas of “Water”), but is unable to escape the deep-seated resentments of his nephew, Chakku (Nawazuddin Siddiqui).

There are many types of films out there in the world. There are movies that make you sing and dance, films that make you cry, films that are over the top and films that are quiet but still powerful in their resonance. Prashant Bhargava’s Patang is an art film in the highest definition that is filled with both exciting scenes, beautiful pictures and quiet moments, where a look or an action literally takes your breathe away. Over six years in the making, the film is a poetic journey into the heart of the old city of Ahmedabad. Patang weaves together the stories of six people transformed by the energy of India’s largest kite festival. Every year a million kites fill the skies above the city: dueling, soaring, tumbling and flying high. When a successful Delhi businessman takes his daughter on a surprise trip back to his childhood home for the festival,...

Chicago – Going back to his roots is what director Prashant Bhargava accomplished with his new film “Patang.” The starkly beautiful, highly symbolic film centers on one of India’s largest kite festivals in the old city of Ahmedabad. The film centers on family and the clash of new and old traditions.
Bhargava lives in Chicago, and spent a number of years going back to India to research and do interviews in formulating the film. The simple story of “Patang” is a rich palette of clashing generations, India’s changing moralities and the simplicity of flying kites, which brings all the elements together.

I visited India only once, for less than two weeks, but I left a part of my heart there. I can't say I know it well, but I know how it made me feel, and it seemed impossibly exotic and absolutely comfortable at the same time: I was curiously at home in a strange land.
At an event in my hotel, I met a police chief's wife, who invited me to her home for dinner. Just like that. The families seemed to function in the ways of families I knew. The fact that so many people in this far-away land spoke English made it more accessible to me. I loved the way so much of the talk circled around philosophy. I developed a particular love of the exuberant music, colors, scents and tastes. It occurred to me that no women can fail to look well-dressed in a sari.

For Chicago-born Indian-American Prashant Bhargava, his debut feature film Patang [The Kite] is a seven-year labor of love. Rooted in the memory of his own uncles fighting kites in the sky, the writer/director decided to fashion his tale of familial bonds around the northern Indian festival, Uttarayana. By utilizing the dueling of magnificent beauty and fierce warfare the thin paper fliers portray, Bhargava gives us a metaphorical entity to mimic the battle between brothers Umesh and Jayresh. Two boys with differing ambitions, their kinship in youth rooted in their love of cutting down as many kites as possible. Teammates in the endeavor, age soon made way for their opposing aspirations in business, a contentious point they would finally part ways on.

Most travel shows tread the beaten path but here.s one that is definitely different. .What.s With Indian Men?. features supermodel Indrani Dasgupta and actress Sugandha Garg attempting to understand Indian men while journeying across the length and breadth of the country. The show premiered on Fox History & Traveller June 4 and depicts the two women encountering men from different walks of lives, regions and tastes on their way. .Most shows are scripted, but this one is not. All of us want to know about Indian men - and imagine being paid for it,. Sugandha, known for her roles in films like .Jaane Tu.Ya Jaane Na. and .Tere Bin Laden., told Ians. .A good travel show is very hard to come by.
